Review of the Panasonic Lumix LX3 high end compact camera and a few sample photos taken around Tokyo.
Thanks for your advice on which camera to get. Our IXY served us well for two years but pictures started to be come very blurry and yellowish.
Initially thought about getting another compact camera but wanted to improve my photography skills so decided to get a high end compact camera despite being bigger in size.

Unlike a standard compact camera, the high end versions (you can see some here) enable you to control the aperture and exposure too just like a digital SLR and the picture quality is far superior due to the higher quality/larger lens.
More about the LX3's Leica lens here.
The LX3 cost 45,300 yen and guessing the price was the first question in a previous giveaway.

Here you see the various never-ever-used sockets for USB, AV out and power attachments. The knob with the red bit around it is a joypad type thingy.
Me love the 16:9 aspect ratio and never change this. More on the LX3 settings at the official site.
Needed to get used to changing the macro manually.
My only major complaint about the LX3 is this strap attachment on the side of the camera - cant rest it on its side for timed shots or lean against lamp post for stability.
The LC-1 self retaining lens cap is as the name suggests designed for the Ricoh cameras but it fits on the LX3 without any modification - you just need to force it on a bit with your palm.
If you use the zoom mode, the flaps get in the way as the lens retracts but you can stick something under the flaps to avoid this.
Without the LC-1, one would have to manually remove the lens cap just like one would do for a digital SLR. The ring has to be removed from the LX3 before attaching the LC-1. The LC-1 cost 1,500 yen.
When you power on the LX3, the LC-1 would have its flaps opened automatically - pushed open by the lens.

Another thing that I forgot to mention is that one can find many accessories for high end compact cameras which you cant get for a standard compact camera.
This page lists some of the extra lenses and other bits n bobs available for the Lumix LX3.
Previous LX3's came with a horrible charger with power cables attached. New versions are just the plug-in-wall type.
The LX3 comes with a few MB of internal memory for taking extra shots.
Took me a while to get used to the UI after many years of using different IXY models.
The screen is incredibly nice - perhaps too nice as pictures on the LCD look much better than the real photos ^^;
Like the small thumbnailed view which wasn't available on the Canon IXY.
When you change modes, this swirly thing appears. You can even take HD video for it too. 1280×720 at 24FPS, 848×480 (or lower) at 30FPS. Quality is not too bad at all.
A look at the box - full of rubbish.
They need to show users how to put the battery on the charger...

The LX3 has a F2.0-F2.8 24-60mm (35mm equivalent) Leica DC Vario-Summicron lens. Images are captured on a 1/1.63-inch CCD sensor sporting 10.1 million effective pixels. Full specs in English at Dpreview.
One of the things I really love about the Lumix LX3 is its ability to take great shots at low light - something that the Canon IXY always struggled to do. This one with ISO 400.
One of the first shots I took without reading the manual so its a bit dodgy.
The macro mode is awesome.
Need to remember to cover the light sensors in the MBP next time I open it to keep the keyboard lit.

5 out of 5 dolphins. I carry a camera with me everywhere I go and while the LX3 is more bulkier to carry, the picture quality and control I have over the settings make up for it. An awesome and recommended purchase.

One of the most interesting things about Japanese culture is the studying-in-a-restaurant-thing.

Whenever I go to McDonalds, Dennys, Mos Burger, StarBucks (where this photo was taken), I would always see students quietly studying away.

I tried to look for reasons why people do this through this search query and came up with things like...
  • Able to concentrate more than being at (noisy) home.
  • Lack of time so do homework during lunch or dinner.
  • Can focus instead of being distracted by the computer (ero sites I'm guessing).
  • More space available so don't feel cramped (like at home).
  • Get to use the cool air conditioner for free.
Where do you do your homework and how much of it do you get?
BTW, if you are learning languages then you may want to have a read through some of the techniques I used to learn Japanese.

The set is comprised of a cape and hat which comes in a little bag. There are two types of hat but you cant choose.

Look for the "Merry Christmas with figma" sticker on the box and I think they will hand you your santa set at the counter.

So we've all seen the cute/sexy 2d girl oppai mouse pads. Even though I'm a woman myself, I quite want one, so I was browsing around looking for them and I cam across these pads, with pictures of 3d girls instead.

I was wondering what you guys think, because in my opinion the 2d girl pads are a thousand times better then a 3d girl. In my case I think it's because I am a woman, so I find anime girls cute in a visual and artistic way, but real women don't do anything for me as I'm straight.

Received this sample very recently from the good folks at HobbyLink Japan. Retail price was 3,500 yen.
I think the reason why oppai mouse pads have that budge on the top left corner is so that one can place the mouse to one side and admire the view.
Much much softer than the Haruka Nogizaka mouse pad. Very smooth too ^^;;
Here are some other use cases for an oppai mouse pad. Useful as a head rest while taking a power nap.
You know those chilled eye pads that you stick in the refrigerator? The oppai mouse pad also doubles as an eye treatment product too - takes the strain away from tired eyes.
Her tanima is incredibly soft ^^;
"Tanima" [谷間] = "cleavage" - good Japanese word to know for folks who are first visiting Japan.
Oppai mouse pad also triples as a finger exercising product. Why risk breaking your fingers typing - strengthen your fingers while working.
Speaking of which, Sankakucomplex has more use cases for an oppai mouse pad.
When you first get an oppai mouse pad, you need to train yourself to stop grabbing the wrong mouse. Training is tough and only the strong survive.
The print quality is extremely berry good indeed.

The next biggest media coverage achievement after appearing on CNN is a four page feature article on dannychoo.com and Mirai Inc in this months edition of Mac Fan - Japans major Mac magazine. Am rather pleased n happy ^^;
And this is what the cover looks like. The article covers my Mac life, dannychoo.com, my career acheivements, Mirai Inc and our Flagship product Mirai Gaia. A glowing feature unlike the steaming pile of baboon diarrhea that was published in the Singaporean 'news paper' The Straits Times recently.

I spent more than two hours with them after the Animax workshop and the interview seemed to have went well.
What they ended up publishing was some steaming crap which insinuated that I hated working for my father - the editor came up with junk from his/her imagination and basically made stuff up - their 'interview' with me seemed to have given them the privilege of saying what they wanted.

They also chose incredibly childish language for bits 'which I said' insinuating that I cant speak English too!
They dragged my wife and personal affairs into the article and published my personal phone number visible on my business card.

Never met them before and don't know why they chose to publish a menacing article. Very very evil indeed. Just another bunch of people to add to the list of haters.
Anyway, the Mac Fan article cheered me up a lot - I have already had business proposals from folks who have read it ^^;
The four page article is called Ringo Shokunin - about designers and creators who use Macs. I talk about how and why I switched to Mac after using Windows for over ten years.

I just needed to get on with my work and not spend all my time maintaining Windows where the underlying technology is still fundamentally the same since Windows 95 - a registry that gets raeped every time you install or run an application.

The only time I need Windows is for doing QA on IE6/7. The sites we build run on Unix and as some of you may know - Mac is Unix based and comes complete with Apache and PHP.

I also love the Mac interface and Expose which makes task switching a breeze. I do have my Mac complaints but am one very happy Mac user.
There was a time when I used to hate Macs and couldn't understand why people used them. I used to think that all you could do on them was mail and Internet browsing ^^;
Here are some closeups of the article for those who can read Japanese.

Been reflecting on life a lot lately and the difference between happiness (now) and depression (my younger years).

I think about how I came from being brought up by a foster family (who treated me like poo - Buck Rogers was my only friend), bullied at school (more poo), lost as a teenager not knowing what to do and trying to put an end to it all a few times - will talk about that at a later day though as I need to get off to the shower ^^;

Life started to change dramatically after I discovered that I was passionate about Japan and the culture. My need to absorb more of it opened up doors and opportunities and without learning Japanese, I probably would not have met my wife either - I joined that Japanese restaurant as a waiter because I wanted to practice my Japanese - thats where we first met.

Oh as for the poll - do you buy computer mags? Me still like to have a physical mag to read in the lounge and find that mags tend to do a better job at aggregating easy to consume information - like the application reviews for example.

"Meishi" [名刺] is the Japanese word for a name/business card and is a fundamental item of Japanese business.
Thought we'd take a look at my latest meishi design and while we're at it have a gander at meishi from my previous positions.
My new meishi - Mirai on the default Japanese side with Haruka on the English side.
Folks in Japan can order name cards at Tokyo Meishi Land - just over 1,000 yen for 100 double sided full color cards. They have a template you download where you use Illustrator to make the data.
Images should be embedded 300dpi and submitted in CMYK color separation with all fonts outlined. They print on demand and ship the same day.

Before I had the girls on the card I used to wonder how some folk would view us - especially when I handed one to the British Ambassador to Japan ^^;

But our main clients are in Japan and the Japanese seem to love the designs which reflect out company culture. I guess they wouldn't be contacting us for their instance of Mirai Gaia if they thought we were strange.
And here is my name card for dannychoo.com which I can give out a bit more freely and does not contain my phone number. The next version will be double sided with Haruka-chan.
This is what my first business card for Mirai used to look like. The cost was something like 5,000 yen for 100 which was done by a printing company. The quality is better but I much prefer the Tokyo Meishi Land double sided 1,000 yen job.

One of the reasons why I decided to have the Suenaga sisters on the company business card was because when I gave out my card, the other person would see the dannychoo.com Mirai-chan card and want one of those too ^^;

I discovered that having the Suenaga girls on our card makes an impact and helps the other person remember us from an evening of networking and receiving a load of other business cards. They are usually the first talking point.
Its also easy to talk about dannychoo.com and the achievements made here which immediately leads to "where can I get my hands on Mirai Gaia?"

We still dont have an official site which is ironic because we are a web development company ^^; The reason is because we have not had a reason to showcase out goods because all business is through folks we know or through introductions - have enough clients lined up which will last us quite a while. We do have a makeshift page for http://mirai.fm though.
And a look at my business cards from previous employment. First up is Microsoft where I was a CGM Product Manager managing some of the Windows Live services.
Here are my business cards from my time at Amazon in Japan and Seattle. Site Manager in Japan and Manager for the Global Asin Metrics team in Seattle. Asin = Amazon Standard Identification Number which we assigned to each and every product.

Ah, before I forget, If you are planning on doing business in Japan, you need to learn how to hand out business cards in the correct way - handing one out incorrectly will immediately give you and your company a bad impression.
I see so many gaijin just fling out their business cards - needless to say they tend to be the ones who don't do too well. See the video below of how business cards should be exchanged.
This is my first business card in Japan. I was looking after Web Marketing in Japan, China, Taiwan, HongKong and Korea thus the many versions of my name.

Cant seem to find my Japan Airlines meishi anywhere. Maybe back at my mums place in London.
The gray card is the first personal name card I made for myself after arriving in Japan - made in Microsoft Word and printed on an Epson printer with paper from Tokyu Hands. I also help out at Akihabara News from time to time.
And a rummage around some of the other business card designs in the meishi folder.
One of the nicest meishi I've received from the boss of Moe Japan. I wish my previous bosses looked like this.
Kotobukiya have a cool meishi too which has their photo and opens out.
Inside the Kotobukiya meishi contains details of the other stuff that they do.
The meishi that inspired me to have Mirai-chan on the company card - Joy Max from Nitro Plus.

Name cards are not only useful for business but for any type of networking. If you have a card, it makes it easier for other other party to remember you.

Business is all about who you know but life in general is also about who you know. Even if you are not working nor have your own business, I still recommend you carry around a personal name card. Having an name card will help you connect with other people easily.
Even if you cant play around with Illustrator, you can easily make cards online with services like Moo.com. Invest a bit O cash and you will discover just how useful a name card can be.

Once you start to network, you will accumulate a ton of business cards which are a pain to maintain. What I do is follow up by sending mail to each person I met the following day - don't leave it more than a week or you will end up not following up. if a person replies, it shows they are interested in maintaining a relationship and once their mail comes in, their name and address is automatically added to your address book (for Gmail). What you can do then is to use the address export function in LinkedIn and add that person to your list of business contacts. I can use LinkedIn to manage my business comrades by region and can see who they know and as for introductions if needed. Its also much better than managing your contacts through physical meishi which you can simply search.

Been very behind in the figure review department - too many SAFS ^^;
Today we take a look at the gorgeous Haruka from the eroge Beat Blades haruka.
Haruka was released a while back by Alter. Shes 1/8 scale and you can get her from HobbyLink Japan who were kind enough to send in a sample. Retail price is 6,800 yen.
Love her dynamic pose but the base takes up a load of space and the font type on the base (forgot to take a pic) looks like poo.
Haruka looks gorgeous from any angle - an example here of yokopai.

Haruka has a very sweet face too and if I was to be stabbed with a ninja type weapon then I would most certainly choose Haruka to do it...
..then she could stab me with her other weapons.

And for those who are wondering why Kotobukiya have a figure of Haruka in the exact same pose - whats supposed to happen is that when a figure maker gets a license to use a character, the property owner (in this case I think its Alice Soft) is supposed to make sure that no two figure companies make the same figure in the same pose.

In this case, I heard there was a communication problem which is why Alter and Kotobukiya ended up making the same character in the same pose...
Today I wanted to ask which company do you have the most figures of. Since I started to work with GSC, my GSC and MAX figures completely out number the rest but before I joined them, most of my figures were Max Factory, followed by Good Smile, Alter, Kotobukiya and then Mega House.

Was invited by comrades at Google to YouTube Live Tokyo - the reason why I could not stay in Singapore for AFA. The most awesome thing about Live Tokyo was getting to meet n network with a load of other YouTubers too like the lovely Magibon.
