やっと京都に行くことが出来た。桜が咲く時期のはずだったが、咲いた木はこの木だけでした^^;

地名を覚えるのは苦手なので、この記事の写真のすべての場所はどこ有るのかは全く覚えていない。妻がナビの役でした^^;
京都駅の周りには普通の街と変わらなかった。バスをちょっと乗ったら、僕が想像した京都と逢えた。 京都には歩く > 食べる > 見るというパターンでした。2日ぐらいで十分。

    Nice pics Danny. Those night tree shots look very cool.

    What you need to do get a portable GPS unit have it record your path taken then you can sync it with the time stamp of the pics you take. Look up Geo Blogging people are doing some neat stuff with it.

    Nice looking pics, I might go to Kyoto now to check it out and pick up some "souvenirs" lol. Always nice to check out the more "traditional" places to understand the culture but Akiba will always be on mind lol.

    I went 1 day to Kyoto on my Japan trip in May. All the temples are a bit spread out over the city. And I didn't like the bus rides, they were kind of packed. But a packed bus is different from a packed train, dont know why, but I like trains more. Anyway..
    Went to Kinakuji too (that gold building), Gion district, some temples in the neigborhood of Gion, and the Fushimi Inari shrine with the 1000 torii. Seems like you did some other places as well, but you did it in 2 days, I only had 1 day for Kyoto, so I was limited in what to go visit.
    Great pics :)

    Great Photos, Danny!

    Love Kyoto - lived there for 9 months in 1999 - my first exposure to Japan & Japanese everyday life.

    Things I noticed:

    1. Most people I knew had cell-phones with CAMERAS on them (not a big deal today, but did YOU have a camera phone in 98/99? Didn't think so.

    2. Well, yes , cute girls everywhere. Didnt know how to handle this as I was previously living in the UK, not famous for pretty girls.

    3. Most people went to Osaka on the train on the weekend to go out - Kyoto night-clubs arent up to much - thereare only 4 or 5 clubs of any description.

    4. Yakuza were everywhere! They run a lot of things in Kansai in general, but of course the most flamboyant Yakuza where in "Gion", the bar & red-light district, often with rolled-up sleeves in the summer.

    Lots of other stuff... Your great pictures are reminding me of my time there...

    I'm definitely going there this summer, but I'm just afraid of the slopes and the stairways, cause one of my friend is disabled, so I guess it's going to be hard to visit..

    Nice pictures and Kyoto looks awesome indeed. I noticed that you used a wide-angle lens for most (all?) the pictures. From what I know, while this captures more of the scene, it also distorts the edges a bit (makes it rounder). I don't have a dSLR but I have experience with film SLR photography I'm planning to get one soon. Is it a hassle to change lenses in between? Is that why you chose to stick with wide-angle all the way danny?

    Some of those places look really busy and touristy - quite a contrast to the serene, traditional surroundings.

    If I ever go to Japan Kyoto is a top priority in my book since I love japanese old style buildings. Walking is not a problem since when I travel I always walk a lot mostly when I go to New York, walking from the Times Square to the Metropolitan museum is no easy task in the high summer of August

    I like Kyoto over Tokyo by just a little bit. Mainly because of the cherry blossoms. Is it true that if a cherry blossom petal falls on you, it's good luck? Our teacher told us this and this prompted some people to actually shake a tree. Desperate much?

    We saw those awesome Tshirts near a Movix in Kyoto. We were going to take photos of them but a stingy lady didn't allow us. Some shops around that place had funny names like 'Bruce Pee.'

    Most of those photos remind me of what I have seen in loads of Anime shows. So I can only guess that many of the artists must be from that area. Even some scenes flash up from Inyusha and Ghost Hound. Those photos would allow a new visitor who seen them first have a feeling they have been there before.

    Kyoto is a facinating place. I've been there 10-15 times and always find new and interesting curiosites. Cherry blossom time is an excellent time to visit if you can get the timing right. That is always difficult due to the short time of peak blossoms.Fall is also an beautiful time to visit. The fall foliage peaks a bit longer than than cherry blossoms so the odds of good viewing are higher. But the crowds seem more dense and hotel rooms are scarce.

    Just returned from a short trip to Kyoto in late March. Took the Nozomi from Tokyo. The Lantern Festival (Higashiyama Hanatouro) was on so at night, all the small sloped streets between Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Maruyama Park where lit by the light of hundreds of lanterns. It was Magical. I recognize some of your photos (e.g. ID#12227). I walked down the very same streets just a few short weeks ago. I'd post some pics of my own and more trip thoughts if I knew how to post my own news.

    I think anyone visiting Kyoto and/or Japan needs to read "Dogs and Demons" by David Kerr (or his other book). He's not an apologist for Japan's senseless destruction of natural resources, however he does paint a realistic portrait of this paradoxical and beautiful country. For the record, David Kerr really does love Japan.

    Then get a copy of Lonely Planet Japan. READ IT. Don't go to Kyoto expecting geisha and samurai wandering all over the place, because frankly that just makes you a naive, ignorant gaikokujin. That said, Kiyomizudera and Nijo-jo are well worth the visit. Kinkaku-ji is okay if you DON'T go during Golden Week. I like the large Buddhist temple (Nishi Hongan-ji_ just down the road from Kyoto eki (train station) for its austere beauty.

    If you try to go to the Imperial Palace (Kyoto go sho?), and you're not a Japanese, just bring your passport to the local Imperial Ministry office and you should be able to get in the same day. Japanese people have to wait up to a year in advance. Try to stay in one of the many charming and affordable ryokan near the canals as opposed to the overpriced hotels downtown or in Gion. The Philosopher's Walk during Sakura season is very nice, too.

      and for God's sake, when you're in a taxi in Kyoto, DO NOT TRY TO OPEN THE DOOR! The taxi driver will do that and will not take kindly to you trying to opening his door. That's his job, let him do it. Carry no less than 3 to 5 mon in cash at all times. You're not gonna get held up. Be polite. If you can't say "Arigato," "onegaishimasu," and "____doko ni arimasu ka?" you don't have much business in Kyoto. Sorry to sound like a snob, but the Japanese people are extremely polite and kind to gaijin, so we owe them no less when we're bumbling around their cities. And most importantly: BOW, BOW, BOW, BOW, BOW, BOW. Then bow some more. (Looking like an innocent, befuddled foreigner while asking for help doesn't hurt, either. Actually, in Kyoto, that's pretty easy to do!)
