Sort of relevant to the Wendy's japan post. I was eating at mcdonalds for lunch and as i watched some lady walk out she dropped a 50/and two 20$ bills, so i went out picked them up and she had already driven away so i kept them ;D.

Hahaha! ^-^ I can imagine the looks on people when they saw a Stormtrooper storming the Police Station!
- Hey, you there! Identify yourself! ... FREEZE! Takashi to all units, block all the doors and windows! That fruitcake is MINE!

Never found anything more than 5 dollars. Punishing people for being a good citizen is like putting DRM on music your customers buy.

if it's coins/note on the streets, I'd probably keep it if didn't see someone drop it.
then again it could be the 'string prank' XD
if it was a purse in the train/bus/station like, i'd take it to lost n found

Here in PH. Handing it over to the authorities means giving them the contents of it.
So i'd be better if either you search for the owner itself or keep it.

Kept it.
But then again, I never found any ammount over 10 bucks on the street, and never found wallets, purses or anything like that.
Mostly coins and rarely bills.
The question remains: Did the police make you tons of questions because... it's a daily routine, or because of the Stormtrooper armor?
Because doing some questioning is acceptable, but to a certain extent... after all, if you're willing to take it to the police, how bad can you be?

well actually, if you find a pursue it is most easy to send it to the owner, since most of the time there are some ID items/cards in there, aren't there ?
and ya... one weakness of stormtroopers, not being able to run fast
hard gay would have made it I guess =D maybe you should switch costumes =DD

LOL stuck at police stattion for picking up a purse. Oh well all we can hope is that the lady would get it back at the station ^^; Your.. efforts would not go to waste then.

They don't give you a lot of motivation to be a good Samaritan in Japan (turn money in only to be interrogated).

i think it depends how much for me. if it's a small amount like... perhaps under 50 or 100 canadian, i just keep it or leave it where it is... if it's a large amount i hand it over to the police. (i reason that if it's a really small amount like 20 bucks... really it's not worth the effort for everyone involved to put it to the lost and found)

Yeah, sometimes it seems to me that in Estonia if you are not know to the police (eg you haven't done anything illegal) then they still treat you as a potentiality criminal and tend not to believe what you say. One I was suspected of hiding a car from the police and they seemed to believe a words from a know petty criminal (he had more street cred?) over mine. Heh, it later come out that the stuff what the dude was telling the cops was just load of crap and it seems to me that he just wanted to feel important and drive around in a cop car:P
Unemployed bummer
bwahaha!!! wonder if they'll manage to identify which police officer is in the photo...?
graduate studant (TV & Cinema )
well, if it is a small amount, i'll keep it.... but, if it is a lot of money, like in a pile or suit case, than i will handle it to the police...
Developing the Distracted Cat
Never found money laying on the streets. As for police then it would be useless to hand in the wallet or whatever I find as they're not interested in that kind of things and most probably would never return it to the owner anyway. In these kind of cases people usually rely on radio, because there are many stations that do whole day broadcasting and so people just call the DJ and then he reports all lost/found things in-between his program. And that's a lot faster and safer instead of contacting the police.
yes sir !

I worked as a sweeper for an amusement park and I found random stuff all the time (most of the time trash). But the question ultimately depends on what I find.
Money, as in just money, I'd keep for myself. Even if I do turn them into security/police I can't be guaranteed that they won't just pocket it for themselves. There was a kids song in China about finding a penny on the street and handing it to the police, and the officer smiles at me or something like that (anyone remember it?). Now a days you'd probably get scolded for wasting their time.
Wallets, purses and such are a different matter. I'd turn those in because I know the pain of losing my wallet.
Student
Wow, that's pretty funny that if the owner was not found in two weeks you could have the contents.
Student
two weeks is pretty short
where my friend work ~ if they find stuff its for 3 MONTHS
anyways~
i find money everywhere all the time
from 5- 20 dollar bills
but HOW can i just return the BILL to the police station?
i mean if it was a purse or wallet that i would return ~ but just plain old money ?
nahhh~

Japan has good police. They can't be bribed.

In Germany you get 5% of the amount which was in the wallet if you hand it to the police and the owner dont react. 3% if the amount is more then 500€.
A good police? I saw many videos of afraid policemen in Japan :/ Like the naked man. All run away from him and tried to catch him with fishing nets O.o
Nyoron~
You look more dangerous than the police man XD

I handed in keys to a police box in Japan once. They made me sign something too, and at the time my Japanese was not very good, so I was really worried I'd just admitted to something I shouldn't have ^^;
You can hardly walk into a police station in a stormtrooper outfit and not get asked loads of questions, what were you thnking?

here in America it's pretty pointless to report lost items as the police will not care enough to look for its owner or it'll get lost in the tons of crap in police warehouses!
so, yeah, even if I think of myself as a "good person" I will still most likely just keep any money I find!

If I found money flying in the street I'd keep it, unless...
1. The person it belonged to was there. (I'd hand it back.)
2. It was attached to something important, like a purse, I'd take it to the police.
That's just how I was raised. =]
