10月のOTACOOLサイン会の時に撮った写真だ。アップするのをすっかり忘れた。秋葉原結構変わって来たね。いろんなおなじみのみせが閉店し、なんとアパレル店が次々と開店。

yeah.. the food looks a tad too simple and plain.. not that appetizing at all but I wonder how it would taste like! As they always say, don't judge a book by its cover! Simple and plain it may be but the taste could be out of this world! ;)

Pretty good prices for Apartments. I expected most apartments to be $1500-2000, not $700. Barely more than what I pay now for a one bedroom here.

Now I wonder if Akiba can maintain its current state in the future, I am quite worried that by the time I visit it, Akiba has became another Shibuya or Harajuku.

Although Akiba has been considered as "Holy Land of Freak" by some gaijin or locals, they shold accept it as part of the Japanese culture instead of trying to get rid of it.

"Even though you dislike it, that doesn't give you the rights to criticize or attempt to get rid of others' hobby," That's what that has been keep in my mind and try to say it to those otaku haters.

The fact that Asobit Chara City is being replaced by a jeans shop pretty much sums up what will befall Akiba. It's been obvious that Akiba is/was a big tourist draw, and the local government's attempt to make it "acceptable" to non-otaku, in an effort to draw even more tourists, is exactly what is killing it and will actually decrease tourism. Why go there if all of the otaku/electronics/ shops are gone? That's why people go there. If it becomes a sanitized, suburban void, then there's no reason to go. I used to spend many days off wandering through Asobit C, so it feels like a part of my otaku experience is also being killed. Hopefully, it will all just migrate to Nakano.

Danny keep sharing photos like this. And take photos like this as much as possible, because you may be recording a time and place that may not exist anymore. And for those who think I'm overreacting, take a look at the Akiba pics from 10 years ago and compare how much has changed already.

Well, I don't think you are overreacting.

2 years ago, when I exited the electric town gate at Akihabara station, I was greeted by at least 5-8 maids handing out brochures and a rapper. As I strolled further down the street (actually on the street), I'd see lots of cute Japanese girls in Haruhi cosplay posing for pics (who were not employees) and idols promoting their cds in the street. Of course, I also saw oddities that I would rather not remember, like the foreigner in his underwear doing gymnatics to music. ^^; But the important thing was, it was a fun place to be. A place for the Otaku, not just for electronics as many tourist oriented brochures will promoted Akihabara as. They neglect to mention the anime side many times. Or maybe they don't want too...

A few months ago, I exited Akihabara station and saw NO maids and NO rapper. I made a right to see that the corner store of Gamers looked like it had closed down (mainstore still intact). I see the streets now opened due to that incident and no cosplayers. I also saw Asobit Chara City closed but it is sad to hear it too had been turned into a clothes store. I say too, because if you stroll down the street by Animate, you can now browse business suits among the electronics and anime. Just doesn't seem as fun anymore.

The Akihabara stabbing has passed and it was just that one guy. Probably safe to move on at this point. That is, if they want it to return to the good old days....

Sorry, Uniqlo, Muji, Jeansmate, and Aoki have all recently opened up new big stores in Akiba. When Akiba station reopens next year it will add ten of thousands of expensive high end retail space as well.

Change will come to Akihabara. It is how it has always been. and how it always will be.

When I went to Akiba back in the early 90s it was about 80% electronics (to include video games) and 20% anime. Over the next 10 years that ratio almost flipped completely in favor of anime/eroge, and now you're starting to see a gradual shift in another direction. I think that if the fan base behind any niche market is strong enough then there will always be a place for them. The hardcore fans will find someplace else and turn it into their new haven if Akiba does turn into Shibuya lite.

Lol... That Rillakuma candy thing looks cute, although it's a bit too big for a candy though, more like a jawbreaker...

Sure hope those anime stores in Akiba don't get replaced, cause next year i'm planning a trip down to Japan... It would be a serious disappointment if it were to...

Anyway, since otaku's are so serious bout their stuff, won't they like go crazy or something since the government is tryin to close down certain anime shops that maybe they frequented?

Bought the Capsule Neo eh Danny?
Word of advice: Had mine for about 5 months already. The "polyurethane coated I-Clip" as quoted off the SwitchEasy webbie. is REALLY easy to scratch off. Threw my phone into my bag for a day, took it out and the it looked like it was submerged in acid. Never put it into my bag again after that. But looks-wise, yep, looks awesome, just that care has to be taken to keep it looking good :X
On the other hand, yay for near indestructibility! Dropped it a million times and not so much as a crack. Of course, I don't transform into a dancing stormtrooper except in my imagination so it might have different results for you :)

Will be glad to be back in there in 2 weeks. They're still working on the station? And they've put a jeans shop on Chuo dori ??? In the 4 times I've been to Japan since end of 2006, I've seen a lot of things change in Akihabara. And indeed, it seems that 'otaku' stuff is disappearing a bit, but I'm glad some of the big ones are still there. I'm happy I was able to experience the pedestrianized Sundays in 2006, didn't get to Akiba on a sunday the years after that, and now it's even abolished. I hope it doesn't change too much in the future and some of it returns...

This time I will make sure to spend more time walking around Akiba when I hit Tokyo in two weeks. I haven't been since 2006 or so. I didn't get to go last year but I want to do it in this trip. Will you be attending Comiket? If you are, hope to see you there somehow XD

Is there any sort of meet up going on for Winter Comiket? I know a few people who will be attending and they're trying to get something thrown together.

    WOW
    3 things really amazed me
    1) perverted gachapon featuring char from h-game/ h-anime
    2) shuraki box # 1 for 1280 yen (roughly $13-15?)
    3) that list of h-games/ stuff (ID#84452), look exactly the same as those HK mall that sell those stuff!! lol
    Nice pics~
