10年間WIN使っていましたが、2005年にMACに乗り換え、使えやすさとメンテナンスをあんまりしなくてもいい事に引かれた。環境もUNIXなので、ウェブサーバーと同じ環境である事は開発に便利。妻もMACにほぼ強制的に使ってもらう事にした^^;最初は凄く抵抗していましたが、今彼女はMACが好き。

I just switched from PC to Mac around two months ago. Have to admit, Mac is great and all but I still can't live without that Windows bootcamp partition around, especially with Windows 7 far better than I had expected. Mostly using Windows for autocad. Finder is way too weak, totally agree.

Great article. It's quite true that you should use whatever suits your needs best. I use both Windows and OSX, both for different reasons. And yes, 7 is a huge improvement over Vista, and even over XP. Seeing the direction Microsoft was taking, I never though I'd see anything better than XP Pro anytime soon. Let's be honest, Vista was garbage. However, Windows 7 is hope for the future.

Vista was garbage at launch, now I'm running it and I never had any driver problem or any crash or freeze. Also the x64 version is better than XP x64. After you disable all the worthless security options and update de service packs everything runs smooth. Windows 7 is better but I'll wait until they release at least one service pack before upgrading.

Not only does Vista run slower than XP, but I also think it looks much much worse. Furthermore, it's comparability is atrocious. All my friends who run it have problems 24/7. Vista was definitely garbage at launch, but it's still bad. I can't understand how anyone would ever pay more than $10 for it. I think I'll wait as well since XP does everything I need it to. I just don't see any reason to upgrade to either Vista or 7 considering my needs. XP runs Source, case closed.

I didn't pay for it and I'll never pay for any OS. 400$ for an ultimate version of Windows is ridiculous. Linux is free and as much work went into it so why can't MS price Windows at a competitive price(around 40$). I know it cost a lot to make it but I don't know anyone who pays for windows aside from the pre-installed versions on store bought PCs. For 40-50$ I would buy it.
As for Vista, I have a relatively powerful PC so the difference between this and XP in speed is not relevant. I do agree that I would run it on a PC less powerful than mine. Also, aero is the thing that eats ram and slows the PC down I turned it off. There is no perfect OS and for the moment Vista suits my need but I agree that XP(past SP2) was really good and that 7 will surpass vista.

Maybe the April fools gag of Danny taking over Fakku was really premonition.
Now back on topic. Been using Win7 on my laptop for a few months now, and must say I like it. Don't have much use for Linux or Mac as Autodesk will not port it applications over and until that happens there is no need to even bother on the production desktops.
Now my backup domain controller is Ubuntu 9.04 Server edition and the wife's netbook has Ubuntu 9.04 on it also, was thinking of giving her snow leopard at a later date. So I'm not adverse to Linux or to Macs myself but until some major civil engineering software gets ported to run on either nativley they are not even under consideration.
Just got to love dealer lock in.
And no bootcamp, wine or parallels workstation are acceptable. They can't handle the power requirements of a civil software package. Believe me I've tried.

I'm runing the RC right now and have been since the betas.
So far I'm quite happy with it, it uses less resources than Vista and has more funcionality.
And it loads amazingly fast on my 3 year old PC, and all the old software and games I use work with no problems.
The only thing I found annoying is the HomeGroup network sharing, sometimes it takes a handfull of tries to get it working properly, but the old sharing service works fine.

That's what I was thinking. I tried a bit (not hard) to figure out how to do this on OSX. I came up with nothing so far, but then again usually the thumbnail is just the first image and it's often all black or a logo or something else, which isn't really a good description of the content ^^

MS is offering awesome deals for Windows 7 in the US at least. There was the initial preorder deal that shaved 50% off Home and Professional upgrades. Theres the Windows 7 family pack that has 3 Home licenses for $150, and now there's the student discount, so anybody with a university email can get Home or Professional for $30. My school also offers Windows 7 free through MSDNAA as well. I'm planning on doing a mass upgrade and getting all my 5 of my computers on Windows 7. DirectX 11, integrated Media Center (that wasn't present on Windows Vista Business, which I use because I need Remote Desktop), integrated XP emulation mode, ability to run multiple video drivers (essential for the Lucid multi-GPU chipset coming out), all make the upgrade a no-brainer for me, especially with all those deals.

I didn't have much trouble with Vista since I bought when lots of Service Pack had been released and with modest hardware. But, have to agree that windows 7 is a step in the right direction.
Also agree that you should try different OSX and see what's best for your ^^, will love to get a mac right now but i'm just started saving XD.

Being a member of MSDNAA I'm currently using Windows 7 Professional x86 RTM. I totally skipped Vista and used WinXP up until now.
I'm having a good experience with W7 and in spite of having only 1.5GB of RAM, 1.8GHz Centrino and a ATI9700 (128MB) on an old (4 years) laptop, it works great even with Aero on.
I wonder who's using W7 with really low specs, I know mine are low but even lower.

I still use the good ol Windows XP, but i've yet to tinker around with ALL it's functions mainly because I just use it practically. I guess the way I use a computer would change as I do more operations in the future, but that time is still far away.
I've been meaning to hop onto the Mac bandwagon, i've had a little test run with them at school and it's a pretty difficult transition to a Mac computer. I guess it's one of those things i'll have to get used to, like how I forced myself to touch type << I used to only type with 3 of my fingers each hand..

It should be noted that Win7 runs just fine even on typical netbook hardware -- 1.6GHz Atom N270, 1GB RAM, GMA950 graphics. Highly recommended.

there's no windows 7 pre-order here. i asked the microsoft helpline and they were clueless even on the pricing. talk about marketing strategies. lol. i'm still on windows xp here and will be upgrading to 7 whenever it comes out in my place (if i can afford it). hopefully they'll price it reasonably within the reach of poor people in developing countries like me.

My university offers free Windows 7 for being a student ^_^ Apparently it gives a 2.2 rating for Netbooks ^_^
You can sort in open/save dialogs in Snow Leopard. Switch to list mode instead of column, thenr ight-click on the column headers to add new columns, and click them to sort.
Oh, and personally I much prefer the Mac OS Finder to Windows' explorer, no doubt because I've been a Mac user since birth. I could never live without Mac Finder features such as spring loaded folders, columns view, Labels, the sidebar, etc.

I've been using Windows my whole life, and I have no problems with it. Probably the reason why I never switched over to Mac. Of course, I don't do any heavily techy based stuff, like coding or whatnot. I just do the basics, like watching videos, messing around on photoshop, HW, browsing the internet, and whatever else I need to.
It's whatever works, and Windows is working fine right now. :D

Playing with the Beta Versions? Yah but I'm on the Final x64 Ultimate from MSDN since weeks! Wrote alittle bit about it but the post got eaten together with all other DC member news ^^;
Windows 7 is the best OS MS came up with so far. Period! I don't have complaints atm after over one month on the Final version. The RC was running great too.
The only problem is that those guys @ HP don't have completed drivers for my WiFi All-in-one device.
All those who still work with an this 8 year old thingy called XP will hopefully switch now xD
And yah, Finder isn't as perfect as Apple advertises it. One strange thing I noticed on friends new MBP lately is that files and folders aren't automtically rearranged if you resize a Finder window. @_@ Kinda weird.

while i am proficient in both Windows and the Mac OS, i tend to have a preference for Windows. maybe because i have come to love my computer taking up all my ram for no good reason, and the blue screen of death that for some reason has never plagued me, or because there are so many games that are more easily accessible on the Windows than compared to the Mac OS.
anyway, from the Windows 7 RC, it seems to me that it's functioning much better than the current Vista, so i will most probably be planning to switch to it when i get a new computer.

I'm using Linux since 1996 and since that time I never used Windows anymore. Actually I switch to MacOS for my graphic work and I'm still using Linux for many other stuff.
Personally I think that spending money with Windows is just a waste. It's insecure, it crashes so many times it's close and its development responds only on Microsoft needs, not users needs. I cannot understand why people still waste their money is such a crappy product when they have the option for a wonderful OS such MacOS or Linux.

I get Windows for free first of all (MSDNAA), and for other licenses I jumped on the discounted upgrades and the student discount as well, so I don't think I am *wasting* money with Windows.
Windows 7 and Vista are very secure operating systems, and there is the constant update support, along with the free Service Packs, for additional security, compared with Apple which maintains its security through obscurity model. Most security problems come from the meaty part between the seat and the computer.
As for development, MS Visual Studio is an excellent IDE, and I base my livelihood on MS products (my web development at work occurs on IIS, using ASP .NET and MS SQL Server). They haven't let me down yet, and they haven't let my company's clients down yet either. So I would say that is responding to "user needs" fairly well.
The only times Windows has crashed on me lately is when I push my overclocks beyond what my system can handle, or when I fiddle around with beta video card drivers. Otherwise, Vista SP2 and Win7 RC have been rock solid.
The day I can utilize newly released video cards without waiting for a terribly buggy Linux driver from ATI or NVIDIA, running all the latest games on maxed settings (with DirectX 11), without having to run terrible emulation or restarting into Windows anyways is the day I will switch to Linux (I have a multi-boot with FreeBSD for most of my development work, so more likely I am hoping for more BSD improvements). As of right now, Windows is a perfectly stable OS with all the functionality I need that also provides for all my entertainment and hobby needs as well. Why should I use anything else?

I could use exactly the same line as a reason for me supporting linux (currently Fedora 11, after 3 years with ubuntu). However, I do not think of windows as trash, not totally at least. It's simply an election based on: what you need, what you want, and what you like. I've leave behind some great games and lived a few moments of despair thanks to my choice, but I don't regret it.
Want to try Mac sometime in the future, with some money in my pockets ^w^;

Windows is stable now yes, and from your privileged point of view it seems cost effective, but I still wouldn't like to run an OS where the entire architecture is built to trap me in case I don't use a "genuine" copy.
Personally, I enjoy not entering key codes, keeping CD cases, making activation calls or having a hardware update lock me out of my system.
Linux gives me peace of mind.

As long as you have a genuine copy, you shouldn't have any issues then, right? It isn't just MS Windows that has DRM, almost anything nowadays that has a copyright attached to it has DRM. I just keep my Windows keys on file on a couple of USB sticks, and I can always access them through my MSNDAA account. Nothing too complex, and I've never had to make a call to activate, or ever get suddenly locked out or anything.
My peace of mind comes from the fact that I can upgrade to the latest hardware whenever and utilize it instantly, and play all the latest PC games at their max settings, and that when I buy software, I generally don't have to hunt for the alternate version for my OS or wait for that version to come out. We all have different priorities.

I don't *trust* MS any more than I would trust any other company I purchase software or products from. I know they are a corporation and they exist to make money. Doesn't mean they are some evil empire that wants to subjugate us. You have some serious paranoia, especially with the claim of keystroke logging in Word. Are you not going to buy any TVs anymore because you're afraid that the manufacturer is secretly recording what you watch? I'm sure that eventually somebody would notice strange packets being transmitted from their computer and through their routers when using MS Word if this was the case.
That's why I'm taking issue here. You are using demeaning and negative language to describe people who use MS products, like MS are our "masters" as if we are being enslaved and that Linux is some sort of holy savior. Get off your pedestal. Both are operating systems with pros and cons, and people will use what they are familiar with and what gets their work done. As for saying only the lucky and privileged who are willing to use MS, the biggest competitor to Windows especially in developing and third world nations, is pirated Windows. Those people would rather use bootleg copies of Windows instead of a free OS like Linux, and I would not say they are the definition of lucky and privileged at all.

Actually they (including myself) are privileged to live where copyrights are not actively enforced, it's a real privilege just like your student discount (actually better).
And you are lucky not to have any hardware issues or upgrade lockups, I used to do support for a company (although I was hired as a developer) and had to deal with activation keys and hardware drivers almost daily plus the occasional activation call (oh I almost forgot about the virus)

For instance zuco doesn't need windows so he comments that it's a waste of money and you just had to rush and defend Windows, that (yougetadicountso) it's not a waste of money, so I'm like "perhaps but it's a hassle" yet you seem to insist these problems don't exist because you haven't found them and that antagonizing users is ok because other corps do it, I insist that's wrong and you call me paranoid.

I first used Commodore 64, then Amiga 500 and then mac. I never used Windows as primary OS, except for a single laptop running XP. I know it sounds strange to buy an XP notebook when you use mac, but this predates bootcamp and I needed it to run some windows only stuff. It gave me the option to really compare the OSes though.
I will not pick Windows as a primary OS again. The reason is quite simple: I want a computer with a working GCC and POSIX system. It greatly subtracts from productivity when it's missing, at least for me. Sure stuff like cygwin compensates for that, but it's just not the same as it's slow and limited.
"Windows is the worst OS with the best installer". A professor once said that during a break when the students started talking about OSes. The installer part is not even valid anymore. OSX works quite well and Ubuntu is not something to fear either. Compared to windows that is. I know some people who might not be able to install any OS :P
Also it's not the worst OS either. There are some OSes with such a limited amount of users that nobody codes software for them. SkyOS comes to mind, which is basically a one man project. The OS itself might be quite nice, but without software...

I've been running Win7 since it was available for beta, and have been using RC at work and at home for some time now, and I love it. Its quick and not as bulky as any other windows OS and i have to say that the lines between Mac and Windows are starting to blur. As soon as more companies start putting out drivers that take full advantage, there will be no stopping it!

I'm currently using Vista since XP doesn't support GPT partition tables (so no partition > 2 Tb, so no 4x1.5 Tb RAID5 array T_T). I tried Seven RC1 when it was released, found it very good - especially the new taskbar which is essentially the fantastic Mac OS dock with a better presentation, I think - so I preordered the final version. Nice move by M$ to have had these really discounted preorders, too bad there were so few of them (at least in France).

I spent 5 years trying to get XP perfect, lots of little tweaks here and there, and now I no longer recognise it from the default installation.
One thing I can recommend to all windows users however- Remove all DRM from windows. Now. It will give you so much freedom over your system it will be unbelievable.

I'll be using Windows 7 as my main OS in about a month or so. For now I'll stick with Vista, I don't think it is too bad but I think 7 is a big improvement over it. I have a few machines running Linux/BSD but no Mac computers, mainly the price is a barrier because when I have that money I want to spend it on other things.

I read you can upgrade to the "Home Premium" version for 30 dollars with a .edu email address which sounds tempting. I used the beta and did like it so maybe I will upgrade in the future, but it seems like a waste for basically just a new UI and a bit "lighter" OS

I can certainly relate to you regarding the need for matching your development/testing/production environments. I'm a heavy gamer, so my main gaming/development machine has to run Windows. The production environments however, are Linux. Testing is a pain too, with the various web browsers out there, and some (looking at you IE), don't coexist well with each other on the same OS. Thank God for virtualization.
Am sticking with Vista for now, since I paid a lot for the Ultimate version last time. Will consider 7 upgrade (as in complete wipe + clean install) mid of next year.

I have been Beta testing Windows 7 for 6 months now and i have to say it's much better than Fantastic Vista (sarcasim).
It takes the best of Windows XP and the better side of Vista and merges them together. Also one of the great things about it is the cost. It costs half of what it would when Vista came out. But a reward for Beta testers sending in info is they recieve a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate when it's launched if you have been sending info for 4 months. Still would like a Mac thou for alot of editing software they have.

Sticking with XP for now, since this is a 5 year old computer or so. I also don't want to mess with the drivers of my sound card wich are exclusive XP.
What I'll end up doing is making my next PC entirely Linux/Unix compatible and just run that and use this as a production station.

Sounds good. Using a POSIX system (which is basically all linux/unix families, including OSX) gives access to the entire world of free linux applications. Quite a lot of them are actually quite good. Also you can easily make bash scripts to avoid doing repeating tasks manually and it's not hard.
It goes without saying that you should pick OS based on what you expect to use the computer for. However buying hardware, which is known to work well in both linux and Windows seems like a good idea as you will can just install a new OS if you start to hate your current one ^^

I encountered this thinking before. Windows fanboys usually refers to the quantity of Windows applications. Sure the quantity is not that great on mac, but you only need one application if it gets the job done without too much hassle.
I guess the best example of this could be the app GraphicConverter. The first version is ancient and could convert between different image formats (jpg to gif and so on). The new versions supports a zillion formats and you can manipulate the images a whole lot as well so the name is odd compared to what it can do today.
One example would be the images I have posted here. I edited all of them in GraphicConverter. It's quite easy and fast to resize all the images you want to the same height and then I added the width of all of them and made an image where I copy pasted the actual images into. Takes almost no time and great results (I wonder if I need it now that we can post multiple images though).
Another example would be a 50 year old photo I scanned. Something went wrong when taking the picture so it's really dark and you can make out two faces and the building in the background. I used GraphicConverter to first rotate the image to make the edges completely horizontal and vertical (nobody can place it like that in a scanner at 800 dpi so rotating will always be needed) and then I highlighted the image alone and used the command to make a new image from the selected. I then had an image of the whole picture and nothing but the picture. I then modified the colours. I applied that all values more than say 90 (I used a slider) should be set to 90 and then the range 0 to 90 should be scaled to 0 to 255. Now the picture became much brighter without making the really dark places brighter. Basically it made it easier to tell the different shades of dark apart. All of a sudden the picture revealed it's secret (which nobody knew) that the darkness had concealed an additional 3 people. The quality of those people even became good enough to tell who they were. I also used this to convert to grayscale and then make it use values from 0 to 255. This provides much better results when printing on a grayscale printer.
GraphicConverter can do a whole lot of other stuff I haven't figured out how to use yet, such as layers and actually drawing (in paint style, though with a few advanced tools). I have yet to encounter such a single graphical application for Windows, which can cover every graphical need I have and this one is even shareware.
This became a bit long, but I think it makes my point clear. Why should anyone want many applications when a few or just a single one can do the job just fine?
As for Windows 7... Well I use OSX as my main OS and has XP in bootcamp. I only use bootcamp to run Windows only software and only one app/game at a time so it really wouldn't make any difference to me if it's one OS or another one. I will use the cheap and easy solution, which is not to upgrade ^^

Me uses Windows, Mac OS & Linux on a daily basis so I get the best of all worlds. Then again I am a Computer Science student so it's hardly a common arrangement...
Desktop (in my room) runs Linux with Windows VMs for Photoshop/Lightroom stuff, laptop (in the lab) runs Mac OS with Windows VMs for when I need to run Visual Studio or such. Only time I boot the desktop into Windows is for games, which I don't play a lot of. It was such a hassle before I discovered what VMs were, I either had to keep rebooting or have multiple computers - now I can sit at my Linux desktop & load up Windows XP on the other monitor in seconds & have access to all of my Linux files too. Multiple monitors & a stable host OS with multiple VMs is a sweet way of working :)
I also hate Finder, for really simple things like it doesn't have an address/location bar so you can't quickly type in the path you want to go to with tab-autocomplete. But the one thing really stands out when comparing the different OSes is that both Mac OS & Windows lack a centralised package manager - in Linux every single piece of software on my computer (including the OS itself) is installed/updated/upgraded/uninstalled using a single program - you never have to search for programs on the web, find the right versions, etc. & you know that every single piece of software on your computer is up to date with a single update command.

OSX has fink. Sure you have to install it yourself, but once it's installed it will do as you request. I think it even use some aptget code, but I'm not sure. Also while the system is CLI on it's own, somebody made a GUI frontend. I don't know if it's any good though because I always use the CLI ^^
Fink only keeps track of what it installed itself so you still need to use software update, but that one runs in the background on the OS, so I don't think that's a problem. There is also an application, which can scan your entire HD and make a list of all your applications with version number. It then compares that to some online list and informs you if you have outdated software. Works quite well (though I'm not using it at the moment :P)
As you can see it's not that hard to get the feature you request in OSX but you do need to install it yourself while it's preinstalled in linux.

I'm a PC user, but had my time as a Mac lover. I still remember those PowerPCs 7200 (one of the first models with PPC processor), the SCSI drives. MacOS 7.6.1. Of course I remember cos I had to install them. About 8 from the 20 Macs that the Uni had. With Macs I had my first internet experience and definitely the UI was _way_ better than Win95. Software was a problem but easily solved with Hotline (something like a FTP with a tracker). Those were nice years, adding the MP3s I downloaded. ;)
Now I move between two words, Windows and Linux. Windows has a nice File explorer, but the resilience of Linux I cannot give up. I only use Win to play or use certain software that is not available for Linux (but I should try Wine seriously). Also, I made the change by my own, wondering when I'm going to do the same with my life =P, tried a pair of versions, tried softwares, did some research, although I'm still just a simple desktop user, and I'm proud with my choice, of what Linux is currently. Just have to study more. =)

My computer history got started on one of those old-time Mac unibody units. My dad made the switch to Mac a long time ago and now carries around one of the new macbook airs. As for me, I got started doodling around with a GUI on that old venerable model.
At school, I got started with DOS and WordStar, moving on through the Windows builds from 3.x and onward.
Presently I use an RC of Win7 at home, and love it; at the office, we're all still using XP. have been vastly tempted to put 7 on my work machine, but know I'd lose a day or two in the switchover, so never tried it.
of all the Windows builds I like 7 best - it really is a step up over XP and totally wipes the floor with buggy ol' Vista.

Been using Macs since System 7 and Windows since 3.1... The biggest difference is always about viruses (virii?) and stability issues. Not good when you're living between deadlines. I admit if Windows is virus free it would've been good enough to use, but Macs have never failed me. My PC friends used to check their floppies with my Mac to see if there were viruses, and if any was found it was simply deleted... no virus checker needed.

I grew up with Macs all my life, and only started using Windows when I started building my own PCs.
It's strange for me how everyone talks about the dreaded BSOD. I used to get kernel panics on a weekly basis with my old G4 iMac, but I've never had a single BSOD in windows. I think both have improved durastically in stability though, and I doubt people are seeing many crashes in either OS anymore.
I've been using Windows 7 RC7100 since it was released, and it's a huge improvement over both Vista and XP. I especially like the new taskbar, although I admit that I still wish it was a little more like the OSX dock. Pinning folders to the task bar is what irks me most because it adds the pinned folder to the right-click menu of explorer.exe which gets pinned to your taskbar instead of creating a new task-bar icon for just the one folder. Ideally, I'd like to be able to pin a folder to the task-bar and have it's contents pop up from it with one click. Instead, I have to right-click the explorer.exe icon, click the folder from that menu and then have the folder open in windows explorer.

I've been always been a Windows user, but I have dabbled with OS-X myself before on my PC. I currently have a triple-booting machine (7, OS-X, and Ubuntu), but end up using 7 the most. I think it's partially the fact that I'm just stuck in my ways and partially because all the major video games are only for windows. I do like OS-X's nice, clean feel to it. Aesthetically - OS-X wins hands down, but for me; Windows is still the way to go. Especially with 7 coming out. The beta has been great, and I assume the RTM will be much better. God, I'm so happy to finally get rid of XP.

Windows 7 is a huge improvement over Vista in terms of performance, usability, driver support, etc. It really is a true competitor to the user interface of Mac OS X, and that's saying a lot. I myself have enjoyed using the RC and the beta versions, and I will be upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 in the near future. Thankfully, my university has a deal with Microsoft so that we can get free copies.

My first experience with Windows is 3.1 and from there I've test every new update of Windows (except the server edition). Windows 7 offer the best experience right after a clean installation. Very customizable and of course all the extra touch that reminds me of the Plus! pack series. :D
Like you said, it boils down to the need of the users and it doesn't matter whether it is a Mac or PC. Most important is we can get the job done. :P

i like Linux ^_^; even though i use XP i been playing around with Linux in a Virtual Machine... but the thing i love about windows is the freeware and shareware stuff that people create, although most are viruses, a lot of them are fun apps and games.
not sure what the Finder is like on Mac, but i found the explorer on XP annoying to use. i recently started using Google Desktop and it has a cool indexing mode which indexes everything on your PC and gives you a nice browse feature, you can type anything in the Google search bar on your desktop and things on your Computer will start popping up if it has a related name. its quite handy ^_^ apparently you can get it on Mac also http://desktop.google.com/mac/index.html

I am a Windows user since Win95, but didnt like it too much, until Win98 SE, then, the next OS that I liked (and I still do) is XP. I used Vista, but only four months because it was used in the job, but now that Im with Win7 I liked a lot and better keep it and use it. ^^
Danny, on Snow Leopard you CAN actually short by Date Modified, Size, Kind, etc. by just switching to list view, right clicking on the sort bar, and adding the options you like.
I can't STAND using the Windows file browser for what I do, when dealing with animation projects and workflow Quicklook alone saves me hours and hours over time. I really don't like the web browser style explorer at all, I much prefer Finder.
I guess I should say, you can SORT by . . . . . . in the Open/Save dialogue boxes with the instructions above!

I was testing out build 7100 Prior to that & before that I was on vista ultimate x64 for a year & before that I was on XP x86. however most machines on my network at home are XP based machines which i remotely connect to from my main system when i need to manage them. generally. I got 1 set up as a folding rig, another rig that only handles my downloads & some folding, & another rig thats just for general use for everyone else & a 4th rig is just a back up rig which gets powerd up every now n again to make sure its working & ready to roll incase my main pc went down. which it has twice... first time, my chipset fried. 2nd time my 4870 shorted out.

I'm using Windows 7 Final 64-bit via a programming friend. It takes a while to get used to, especially if you're jumping from, say, Windows XP but compared to Vista which I have on my laptop, you can really tell there's a performance boost (besides the obvious - the specs of both systems, desktop vs laptop).
We have to use Macs at school though (being graphic designers and their thing for Macs apparently). Evil little buggers.

Personally, I've had good luck with Vista. However, I hasten to say I'm on Vista Home Premium 64 bit. From what I have read, 64 bit Vista runs much better, especially if you have a stronger computer with plenty of ram. I have had no serious issues with Vista at all. It has been totally reliable for me! Although the 64 bit version is said not to run 32 bit programs well, I have run them with no problems so far.
However, I may upgrade to Windows 7 just to get rid of the excessive stupid "okay to proceed" clicks I have to do just to run some programs. I need to check to be sure but I think Windows 7 got rid of that dumb crap.
One special point I have to make that many people may not realize - if you get a new OS, get a full new version, not an upgrade. I've noticed most problems tend to be from people who bought upgrades instead of a whole new OS. To get a full version cheap, buy one new computer hardware then buy the OEM version.
I agree, get the full version of the OS. I ended up shooting myself in both feet and deeply regretted buying the Vista Ultimate 32/64 bit upgrade pack. Before finding a little... loop hole in the installation of the upgrade I had to use XP Pro 32bit and stick with the 32 bit version of Vista when upgrading. Through the loop hole I was able to just use the Vista Ultimate upgrade to install on a blank HD. Still was a royal pain in the backside, and now with all the updates for Vista... still takes the better part of a day to install the OS.
I've been playing around and loving Windows 7 beta. The 64 bit version works wonders in overall performance over Vista. Remarkably speedy, less stress on system resources, and the games I enjoyed in Vista I enjoy more with Windows 7, as they seem to run faster and smoother. And up until recently when I managed to royally confuse the audio card I've had no blue screens or crashes, its only hung once during the audio card mess.
As for the Mac line of computers... I hold nothing against Apple, they make some sexy though expensive systems, and one day I'll own a Mac and run both Mac and my PCs side by side.

I am using Windows 7 build 7100 by some months and it totally changed my Windows experience. I do things faster, i love the new bar (the preview and the stacks are wonderful) and until now i couldnt find any program that wouldn't run on it. Runs very fast, looks very nice and I cannot tell its an evaluation copy at all. Well, only if i look at the right lower corner of my display. Can you imagine that XP was way slower than W7 on 3 gigs of RAM? Begone XP, I don't want to hear anymore of you, bugger. Windows 7 is not Vista with just some changes. It is Vista tuned and much much faster. It will do wonders on a laptop.

Win 7 is a great operating system. Not perfect, but enough to give OS X some serious competition in terms of quality. I suspect that a lot of people who are on xp machines will switch over to win7 pretty soon.
What win7 doesn't have, is the UNIX backbone of the OS X, which makes working with some of the science specific softwares difficult at best. I just love how you can use fink on OS X and gain access and support to both GNU linux based apps and Microsoft-developed enterprise applications. And shell scripting, don't get me started on that.

Sung, you are right but take in consideration that the majority (like 90% of us) do not know even what shell scripting is and we will never try to access both GNU and MS applications on the same OS. Ease of use, speed and friendly interface is what the majority of us will look to find in W7. And home users will be the backbone of the W7 sales. I wait for MS so get rid of the registry in the next Windows.

This is how I see it:
Windows: More programs, great for games and system-intensive apps; best suited for entertainment.
Mac: Less programs, great for focused productivity; best suited for artists and for creatives.
And yes, it's pretty hard to dodge productivity in Mac since you can't play time-consuming games with it. XD

I have tried the beta and RC, and it does work well on my 2-yr old Vista laptop. Won't be buying it until I get a new PC though.
