カバン置きっぱなし

日本に初めて来た時に、特に興味深いと思ったのは、みんながマックなどで、席を確保するためにカバンを置きっぱなしすることだった。

 title=

これは僕の故郷のイギリスでしたら、カバンは間違いなく盗まれる。

 title=

海外でも日本の方は置きっぱなしするかな〜と調べたら・・・

海外各々の国ではカバンを置きっ放しするかどうかはコメント欄で見てみよう。

Would love to be able to do that, but not I'm not trusting enough, even if others do it there's always the chance that someone will take my stuff!

Then again I could leave something invaluable, but that'd just get pushed away. -.-

Well some similar existed in college where you leave trays at the table you're sitting to lay claim to it...other than that doing that anywhere else you can kiss your property goodbye...

In my city my city people do that all the time, there's no problem at all.
But in the college it's more than that, if someone is about to take a chair you want and he's unaware, you can throw your bag and if it lands ON the chair and BEFORE the other person sits, then it's yours, lol. And it's true.
Well, it was more common before people started to carry only a laptop to school.

Depends on which part of the UK. Back in Rugby where I grew up, I would never dream of leaving any of my possessions in public like that. But here in St Andrews I will happily leave my bag/jacket to save my seat whilst I go to the bar to get another drink.

The best example of how safe this town is was when there was an art festival going on in town, they set up a couple of stages around the town centre & when it came to night time, they just left all of the expensive sound/light kit in the street completely unguarded, confident in the knowledge that nobody would steal it during the night.

The policy here is don't leave anything at all unattended.. Leave anything even those of no value, they would get stolen the second you take your eyes off em.

Otherwise, leaving a bag.... wouldnt do that if there was anything valuble in it, pretty sure its not going to stay when you get back. And leaving something like newspaper or w/e will just get shoved away ....

Best bet is probably a jacket or something, or even better, a "friend". Thats how you use them, right ? XD

Canada is a rather large country... in smaller cities it's not uncommon to see careless individuals leaving their bags unattended but in larger cities you're just asking for a bag of poo.
A friend came back from touring France recently and tells me you won't get a bag of poo, but a smoking crater. He says the culture in France has become so paranoid in today's "post-9/11" life that the automatic response is for the police to detonate any unattended bags. He momentarily put down his bag by his feet while he unfolded his map and people in the train station immediately began asking each other who's bag it was just to be sure before calling the local law enforcement. Yikes!

yes i do that too if i am eating alone. if i am with a group of friends, we will appoint one friend to look after the table while the rest of us go buy our food.

in singapore, a common sight will be leaving paper of tissue paper to claim one's seat. it's cheaper and safer than leaving your bag. ('~')

Yea, tissue paper culture. Rather have a pack of tissue paper missing, than a bag full of my precious stuff. =3

I seldom eat out alone though, usually eat with a group of people. The scary part is actually to look out for empty seats. Luckily, one of our friends is very willing to torture her bag. If she sees an empty table, she just THROW her bag on the table to mark our territory, despite knowing that her laptop is in her bag. lol.

never, never take your eyes off your stuff here, or indeed be parted from your stuff. the only exception is if you're with someone, and even then there is still more safety in numbers i.e. the more of you there are, the more people will be dissuaded from sitting next to you and/or getting a shot at stealing your stuff.

there's a reason why I use body bags instead of more feminine purses or whatever usually. I've become rather paranoid when it comes to my things, having suffered more than my share of thefts.

Sometimes I still do that. Depends on the place though. Nowadays you need to be more careful and can't be as trusting as in the past. I still see people leave all kinds of things unattended though. Bags, cameras, shopping items, cars w/keys in the ignition, mopeds still running, etc. I guess some people still feel relatively safe and trusting here, although I don't feel the same anymore.

So yes, I never experienced something like this, leaving your bike, bag or misc. items unattended without fear of having it stolen. My most important possessions are practically stuck to me, I don't trust my fellow citizens.

In the crowded areas of singapore, like hawker centres or food courts, ppl usually leave tissue packs on the table to indicate that it's taken. Pretty weird though, but strangely most ppl has gotten used to that haha. Seems like the cutlery cleaner kncows as well, bos if not, they would have cleared the tissue packs away. :)

Doesn't happen here too often, it's too dangerous to leave your stuff unattended. Crime rates are really high here, a lot of people steal because they are living in poverty.

Back in highschool, people would place their school bags to reserve a seat, since there was nothing valuable in the bag. Happens in uni a lot too.
So my guess is, there's nothing valuable in those bags, and isn't worth being caught for stealing something that isn't worth much.

I thought it's only happened in Singapore ^^; I saw some people leaves their belongings like bags or their shopping bags in foodcourts / fast food to claim the seats though, but nowadays not so often anymore since most ppl here scared their belonging being taken away while nobody look after them...so yeah most of ppl in singapore use pocket tissues or umbrella or newspaper.

Last thing I would ever do here in the US is leave my bag with a laptop inside unattended. There are several outcomes to this, and it all depends on where you are and at what time. First, everyone could respect your stuff and when you come back you have a seat and your stuff is still there. Second, your stuff gets stolen but you have a seat. Third, your stuff gets stolen and you have no seat.

It all depends on where you are and who is around. Back in the university I go to I would leave my backpack at tables while I went to get food and when I came back my stuff would still be there, but I always took my laptop with me. Other times I would ask people to watch my stuff and when I came back my stuff was always where I left it. Worst case scenario at school would be someone stealing one of my expensive textbooks.

Most people here wont leave their stuff unattended and whenever in a group someone stays with the bags while someone else in the group gets the food for him/her.

Would never think twice about leaving my possessions on a table to reserve a table. The only time I would ever do that would be using a towel to get one of those seats by a swimming pool. Even then I've never done that.
My stuff'd get nicked and/or thrown about.

In Malaysia, if you're eating in a hotel, it's generally safe to leave your belongings on your seat. In public areas though, it's a different story. While it's always important that you keep your belongings close to you if you're in Kuala Lumpur, my hometown of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on the other hand, is dependent on what sort of demographic is currently populating the area you're in. Generally, the higher the number of immigrants, the more likely your stuff is gonna get stolen.

    People here would respond like in Germany ^^;

I once noticed unattended bags on a station and started looking around for potential owners. If they haven't had arrived as quickly as they did I might have raised a bomb alarm. After all the police has arrested people for bombing attempts (and possessions of bombs!) so it might happen and the police used the media to tell people to be alert.

This is not something I think of normally. People don't leave their bags around at stations because either they will be fined heavily for stopping the trains (like in Germany) or the bag will be gone when they return. The latter is the most likely. People steal everything everywhere here. My mom got her coat stolen on the train while she was present. Somebody managed to sneak away with it without her noticing until it was too late and sadly this is a good example of what goes on all the time >_<

In my trip to Tokyo last year, while stopping by to a Starbucks to relax, I remember going around looking for any empty seats where me and my friend can sit down.

When I saw a bag on an empty chair, even though it's obviously a woman's bag, upon seeing a man sitting on the adjacent table, I simply assumed it must belong to his girlfriend or wife or whatever. When I asked if the empty chair opposite the said bag was taken, he told me he wouldn't know since it wasn't his bag.

Being used with living with vigilance against all sorts of pickpockets all the time, to this day I'm still quite shocked by that man's response. Even when it's Japan, I carried my valuables with me at all times.

If I ever live there, I think it's gonna take some time before I get used to such a carefree, unsuspecting culture.

I found it odd that in the UK how you had to go up to the bar tender in a pub to get served. Here you walk, sit down, and it's expected that one of the waiters will wait on you hand and foot. I have left my leather coat on seats in theaters though, to save my seat while I went to the bathroom, and it was still there when I came back. When it comes to people respecting your things, and not stealing them or what not, I think it's better here than in the UK, but it's still more like the UK than Japan.

It's sad to see what terrorists have managed to accomplish in the last 8 years. Every unattended bag is suspicious, every suspicious looking foreigner gets abused at airports. The German officials' reactions is therefore no surprise, as terrorists have lately begun to target this country with videos on which they clearly threatened to concentrate their attacks here as well, since elections are going to take place here soon and one of their demands was that the elected German government remove their troops from Afghanistan, too bad that the poor Japanese bloke had to pay dearly for this harmless incident...

That would be a no-no here, like others have said as well about their areas, if you put it down and turn your back its gone. Ways of table saving in Texas, USA, is to have one of the other people with you stay at the table till you get back. Either order for them or they go get in line when you get back. I used to be a smoker and smoking was allowed inside years back, that was easy to do as occupying the ashtrays on the table kept others away.

Oh and yes, its possible if its a abnormal looking bag that the cops would be called to check it for a bomb. That would be costly as local cities charge persons responsible for the costs of the calls, prank or otherwise that are false.

Here you dont get poo for leaving your bags. You just lose the bags. I dont think Ill be doing that leaving the bag thing in Japan when I go simply because after living here so long Im just not comfortable leaving my possessions alone in public. I might do the old newspaper or box of mints thing, though.

I left my new 500 yen umbrella leaning against a wall in Ueno station while I checked my map. Once I figured out where i was going, I went about 15 steps before I remembered I'd forgotten to pick up my umbrella, turned around and someone had stolen it. Good thing it was only an umbrella.

Here in Canberra students at the ANU leave their laptops and books and stuff over desks in the library for hours while they go off to lunch/lectures/whatever. Gets annoying if you're looking for a desk and half of them have been indefinitely reserved while people go off to do stuff.

People could probably leave their stuff there too, since there's security cameras on every damn little corner of everywhere except for toilets and private residences, so thief would have a hard time not to get caught. Maybe that's the same in Japan since people are so trusting?

I live in Russia, and we also have this tradition of marking a place with a bag. McDuck thought is a risky place, where your possessions can be stolen easily. So we take a wallet and a phone with us to the checker, and of course it is highly not recommended to mark your place with a notebook >__<
But no poo-in-a-bag-routine in my neck of woods (never ever heard of something like that!0_o). Only thiefs.

This is done not only in fastfood cafes but in a bus to.
The bus which takes me from my suburb to the nearest Moscow subway station waits for 10-15 minutes at my bus stop. Bags are leaved on the seats and passengers are out smoking or buying some gum/water in the nearby shop.

You can leave bags unattended here unless you leave them with your friends except at my university. I lost my ring the other day and ran back to find someone had actually returned it =D. People at my university either a) return lost items or b) leave them were they are unless it's a paper or pencil or something (art students will take hb pencils and paper ^^;). You find giant lost and found bins in the lecture halls. It's amazing.

I did lose my bus pass and about 5-10 minutes after realizing I lost it, it had been stolen ^^;. Same with a new box of fineliners once. It's just my university that has this sort of exception.

I witnessed how some guy approached a man drinking his coffee in a cafeteria, and asked something (probably "what time is it") and suddenly grabbed his small bag + cell phone from the table and run out of the bar.. right in front of his nose. Good luck the waiter was fast enough get the running guy and could get the bag back, but not the phone. So if you come and visit Barcelona, watch out! xD

It's not advisable where I live to leave bags or anything valuable unattended, even if it's for a few minutes. If it's a fast food restaurant and you leave a newspaper, it would probably get pushed aside.
When I was in Kyoto a few months ago and saw that a lady left a cell phone on the table of a fast food restaurant. She was gone for well over 10 minutes so I thought she had forgotten it. I flagged one of the workers and told him that someone had left their cell phone. As I was telling him, the lady came back and wondered why we were holding her cell phone. It was quite embarassing!
