I think it sounds a bit pricy for what you're getting personally. It looks awesome an all, I'm just not sure it's worth the price tag.
Multimedia Technology Student
http://thehappyninjadrawn.wordpress.com
Yea I know what you mean, but it's compact compaired to most DSLRs which is something that I want so that it'll fit into my camera backpack along with the rest of my gear. If it wasn't so pricey I'd definitely get one. I'm just going to have to wait till the price comes down.

how about the lens weight?i mean,if u use a big lens,it wont be much lighter than ur usual dlsr?
Pre-U Student
http://wakuwakusuru.zeroclipse.net
Four Thirds lenses are lighter than lenses made for APS-C crop and much lighter than lenses made for full frame bodies since a Four Thirds has a much smaller image circle. But then again it depends, if you are getting an all in one zoom lens,it will probably be bigger and bulkier.

yay was waiting for something like this. A great reason to upgrade my Fuji :D
They should just send you a free one with all the free promotion you been giving them. Seen the Lumix on here so much I'm probably gonna pick up the GF1 someday. Well if it gets a good review from you.
Wouldn't really consider this the successor to the lx3 due to the ability of employing micro 4/3s (maybe the price too? haha)
Wonder if Panasonic is gonna hit us with an LX4 :P
browsing the nets
http://otakuposts.blogspot.com/
seems Panasonic is pushing the micro 4/3 format. they should release more lenses for this.

It can take regular 4/3 lens with an adapter.

I loved the awesomely retro-futuristic opening flaps in front of the lens on that last model.
I hope this model makes up for the loss of the aforementioned.

I was thinking that I need a new camera soon, the Canon Ixus just doesn't cut it as well as it use to.

looks amazing but can't stand the price
Ha!
Exactly my thought, US$100 lower would be good. Just wonder if the price will see some decline in a couple of month. This is one camera that I may go for next.
http://www.stefkov.com/
I thought this was a successor to the two cameras behind it, not the LX3?
I wouldn't have thought micro four thirds would push out the type of market that the LX3 is in.
Looking at the price it's gonna cost the same as Nikon D90 over here...
http://www.loneotaku.net
Nice... I'll add it to my wish list... Perhaps when I am ready to upgrade.

I seriously need a new camera. Now, if only it wasn't THAT expensive O_o
Pre-U Student
http://wakuwakusuru.zeroclipse.net
It is a DSLR after all. It will be even MORE expensive when you have to splurge on the lenses ^^;
Student
I'm not that big a camera guy but isn't it technically not a DSLR?
It doesn't have the mechanical mirror mirror system akin to DSLR's, or at least it doesn't look that way in the picture where its taken apart.
Pre-U Student
http://wakuwakusuru.zeroclipse.net
Well yeah, technically it doesn't have the features of a normal DSLR like the mirror etc.
But it's not a P&S either since the lens is interchangeable and the sensor used is much bigger than those used in P&S cameras.

Awesome build but too expensive IMO. Also, the fact that there aren't much choice between lenses means there are still limitations to its photo shooting capacity.
But heck, if this rolls out awesome pictures, I might get the f1.7 kit when it comes out. Nothing turns me on like bokeh. :)

http://anjerasu.wordpress.com
That really looks superb. I even like it that it comes in maroon/red now. Always wanted something smaller to bring around but at the moment I'm still on the verge of buy 2 more lens for my dSLR (one of my lens kinda died on me recently, so yeah had to get 2 this year, nuts being squeeze).

Meh, a LX3 is more pocketable and 4/3 sensor isn't much different to P&S sensors
Depends on which P&S

Wonderfull, simply wonderfull however the problem is: if you carry the lenses with you, it takes only few space less of a normal DSLR camera in your backpack... If you bring only the pancake lens, you will carry with you only a really really expensive compact camera since you can't exchange the lenses on the spot.
Dunno, maybe I'll go for the Canon G11...

Yeow!! $750 bucks for the camera.. and $950 for the lenses!! Oooh my lord is that pricey.

wow its gorgeous. Looks like I got 3 in my wishlist: Nikon D90, Sony Webbie and this :D
I bought a LX3 few months back due to the fantastic photos posted here.
Danny, you are an evil, evil man.
Seriously, not enough lenses at the moment in the 4/3 camp (Pana, Oly) to convince me to change side. I'd still go for a Nikon D90 next. However, GF1 with an adapter, real Leica lenses could be a goer (manual focus though).
Depending on your shooting style and subject, LCD screen is not as fast as optical viewfinder (speaking from my LX3 experience).

The micro Four Thirds system is a relatively new system and there are only 2 micro Four Thirds body released to date.
There are quite a decent number of Four Thirds lenses actually, but of course it won't match the like of Canon or Nikon.

While I'm not currently in the market for a new camera, I must say that this one is very nice indeed.
Very nice indeed. Hopefully, in the future I would be able to afford such a camera and be able to put it to good use. By then, there should be more lenses and options for these types of cameras right?
http://hxyume.com
Very interesting camera indeed!
If doesn't wrong this camera is using micro four thirds lenses just like the Olympus E-P1 Pen. Can use Four Thirds lenses with a converter, therefore lenses selection wouldn't be a problem i guess.
Too bad i just bought myself a DSLR last week. :p
http://hxyume.com
And i just noticed there's a Leica's "L" logo on GF1 body, the camera doesn't come with Leica lens right?
Or that "L" is actually for Lumix. :p

I really do like the offerings of these micro DSLRs, especially the LUMIXs. The only thing I don't like is the lack of a built in view finder, and maybe the way the flash is built in.
Pre-U Student
http://wakuwakusuru.zeroclipse.net
There's an optional EVF which you can attach to the GF1 http://www.dpreview.com/previews/PanasonicGF1/page6.asp
Can't really complain much about the flash. The EP-1 doesn't even come with a built in flash. Its better to get an external flashgun if you are serious about flash photography.

i don't think you can really call this a successor to the LX3, more like a competitor with the olympus ep-1.

Not exactly a point and shoot... this is a Micro Four Thirds system.
Interchangeable lenses and full manual controls make it closer to a standard dSLR than otherwise...

holy sweetness! I was wondering when an lx3 successor would come...but because this is using the new 4/3 system I don't feel like it totally is the lx3's successor...

If reviews are good, and when we have a decent lens set to buy, I'm considering selling my Canon XSi and getting this little monster... xD
Image quality may even be lower, the sole fact that I'll be able to carry it around without a huge bag to protect it is enough for the shift...

working to pay for figures etc.
http://spacejunq.deviantart.com/
Very similar to the Olympus EP-1, also uses the same micro 4/3 format. The EP-1 is nicer looking. Trouble with these is you have no optical VF, so you have to do chimp impersonations with the camera, and the screen usually becomes invisible in direct sunlight! (think I might have pointed that out before??)
http://producersan.spaces.live.com
It looks really nice and compact but I'm sure I'll probably miss the swiveling screen of the G1 and GH1 so I'll pass on this one.

it looks bulky desu LOL well compared to LX3 :3
The true successor to the LX3 is likely to be the LX4 in 2010.
I don't think this fits the bill anyway because it's really a different camera category - where the LX3 is top-end compact, the GF1 is going for very small bridge camera(micro-DSLR as they call it) with changeable four-thirds system lenses. If it's genuinely good (so far as I know the reviews on the other pansonic four thirds system cameras so far have been average at best) it could be a bit of a revolution in bridge cameras but it's definetely not fitting the compact category.
Comparing the stats from the UK panasonic site shows us that the LX3 is 290 grams loaded where the GF1 is 285 body only and the basic kit lens is another 100 - so it's immediately ~33%+ heavier. Dimension-wise the GF1 is around 10% taller, 20% wider and 20% deeper but again that's with no lens attached - with the basic kit lens on it's going to be around twice the depth of the LX3. So if the LX3 is slightly too big for a small camera case and needs a medium, the GF1 will likely need a large case or to be dismantled into a medium and a lens case for carrying.
The GF1 looks to be nearly twice the price and the kit lens looks to lack both the wide angle and zoom capabilities the basic LX3 has so it's probably three times the price to setup once you've bought a wide lens and a telephoto one.
What you do get for that is around 20% more pixels in the sensor and the ability to fit lenses, so if you want a lens for close up work one minute and one with a good zoom the next you can swap them out as with any dslr, but significantly smaller than previous attempts.
If I seem to come across a little harsh I can only apologize as I may be a bit defensive having only bought my LX3 some three weeks ago. (and loving it!)

LX3 is great... when I choose my FZ28, I was almost choose the LX3 but since I want the long zoom ability of FZ28, I decided to skip on LX3 and choose FZ28 instead, never regret it though but if I have extra money, I don't mind to also have LX3 as my back up camera....

I'll likely get it, but it's not replacing any DSLR of mine. Not without a optical viewfinder.
I think I will get it too. My DSLR gears are way too big and heavy for certain occasion.
The optional LVF1 may work for you. However, it costs an extra ~$200us...

Math Teacher/Tutor
Strong resemblance to the LX3 but this is not its successor. The earliest we will see a LX4 is early 2010.
Personally I'm really confused at the whole Micro 4/3 cameras like this one and the Olympus. Sure its nice and compact but stick any decent size lens on it and well its not so compact anymore. These things look pretty funny when attached to anything aside from a fixed pancake lens IMO.
Personally I'd rather just get a LX3 or the new Canon SD90 before ever really considering one of these Micro Four Third cameras. I personally like how the traditional mirror DSLR handles.EVF don't do it for me.

.....wow. Removable lens! But then... you're forced to use their lens.

Danny, i'm considering to buy the gf1 during the trip to Japan this month when it releases. i heard that Panasonic cameras moved to Japanese ONLY menus/displays (OSD) from having multilingual ones for their local products. I want to know if that is true. or has your lx3 been read with Japanese? i would like there to be English so I can read it. hope you can help out. thank you.

I think that would make a fine urban safari camera. Small enough to fit into a small messenger bag but with enough features to not cause you to kick yourself for not using your 'proper' camera. Not sure of the pop up flash. Reminds of of early Sony pocket sized cassette tape players. Beautiful to see open and close but one wrong move and it's jammed in one place forever. Unless it's made of titanium or some ultra springy stuff that can withstand being snagged on a coat while you rush through a crowded train station.
