Was just gonna post this just now. Good to see someone's already ahead of me. :)

Slim looks pretty nifty, but less shiny. Since my PS3 just sits there anyway, there's no real point of making it lighter, so I'm happy with my bulky sexy one. Large, and in charge!

I really like the new look personally. I prefer matte finishes to glossy finger print magnet finishes. >_>

I already have a launch ps3 though (thank god for backwards compatibility), so I won't be picking up a new Slim model myself either.

Don't have a launch, but had the MGS bundle PS3 with backward compatibility as well.

I'm curious about the Slim's spec comparison compared to it's predecessor. Since it's more compact, has it taken a toll on things? I'm curious, since I haven't been keeping up with the release info on (When you've got the old console, I guess you don't really feel the need to check up on these things; I mean, I'm not going to be buying a slim anytime soon when I'm sitting happy with my fatty PS3 =D)

It's funny. The PS3 is about the size of a small desktop tower, but the PS3-Silm Will be about the size of a classic PS2.. Isn't technology meant to be getting smaller AND more powerful?

Not really, it's always been "new technology is always bigger than old technology" followed by "refined technology will always be smaller than the previous iteration."

The first calculator was the size of a cash register.

The first computer was the size of a classroom.

The first cellphone was about the size of a thermos.

There's probably gonna be a huge power brick outside the system now. Is it just me, or does the system look kinda ugly compared with the original? And whats up with the power and eject buttons? Couldnt they have used the old ones?
And sony said the slim wont support extra OS installations, so no more linux for anyone who cares. One thing that did catch my attention was the Bravia sync feature sony seems to be trying to make universal with their entertainment units.

But Im glad I have the old PS3 with partial PS2 emulation =)

Agreed. I think that this new system is mainly targeted at the people who are still on the fence whether to buy a system, rather than the hardcore that already own the system.

The PS2 slim looked much sexier than the PS2 fat, so this is a bit strange to me.

Perhaps they're trying to target the more casual console-y crowd of Wii and Gamecube owners?

drop the power brick comment, seems like they're saying the PSU is internal again. Quite a feat Id say.

And even though current PS3 a fingerprint magnet, the shiny casing really makes it look classy, the matte casing really doesn't come off as the same

Its too bad that all the current PS3 incarnations are crippled compared to the original models. No PS2-hardware compatibility through the emotion engine, or even software compatibility like in the 80GB MGS4 bundle model, and no slots for memory cards and the like, and they cut down on the number of USB inputs too. Sony even cut back on the physical make-up. The older models used to have Playstation 3 printed on its surface with chrome metallic lettering. Later models used some grayer plastic letters, and now this newest one just carves it into the matte finish itself. Ah well, as long as it can still play games. If this draws less power than the current PS3, I might consider one.

Well they could cut back on the hardware and keep the flashyness of it. Can you imagine? "The all new PS3 Slim! Now without Blue-Ray reader! So we can pass on the savings!"

The danmed thing would be worth pennies. But then again, if you have to install games on it anyway, they probably could get away with "Multi-DVD Instalation"

Yeah, You'd still end up paying the same extortionate prices for decent games though. Around here a new PS3 games retails around about £40-£50. Oh for the days when games costs £30 tops. *flashback*

I wouldnt be surprised if Sony tried to bring the PSP Go gaming model to the PS3. They just have to wait for broadband to get better though, and ship PS3s with >1TB HDDs. Can you imagine waiting for a 50GB download of a PS3 game that normally comes on a Blu-Ray disc on current "hi-speed" internet?

That's like.. a couple of days download time AT MSOT on a high-speed internet. You have to remember though that not everyone is lucky enough to live near the telephone exchange, and here in England Broadband providers are rather picky about the routers you get. They just give out 100megabit routers with their logo stamped on them so-to-speak. That equals 12.5mb connection limit, anything above that goes to waste. So you need a 3rd party router, to actually live in a good location (personally we live near an telephone exchange and can get up to 20mb broadband, but anyone who isn't in a big town around here tends to end up with a speed cap at about 1.5mb. For the record. I only have an 8mb connection, I'm content with it.. being the only person that uses it in the house).

In short. Depending where you live, depends if it's plausable or not. But most likely Sony would be a pain and limit download speeds to a few megs at most..

              Sorry to ramble. >.<

I find it more amazing that they can pull this off for such a price. A 120GB slim is the same as the 80GB fat!? I hope they'll have a price reduction on the older models, or they'll probably collect dusts in the stores. ^^'

With the price of an average blu-ray player being ~$100, I think these units will sell like hotcakes.

I dunno... looking at the overall internet reaction, people are more in favor of the bulkier and sexier model it seems. Feature-wise, this is definitely good news. It's thinner, it's smaller, lighter, and has a bigger hard drive.

Outside of the cosmetics, it's win. I'm sure there will be case-modders out there that are gonna polish it, and make a shine finish. People will want that. :)

The large-and-in-charge PS3 is pretty cool though. It reminds me of this:

True that. The problem as I see it is that some people don't have room to put it - and it's not very space-efficient because of the rounded design. xP

But yeah, heaviness really can't be that much of a factor.

The PS3 Slim should hopefully get the PS2 gamers to finally make the switch to PS3. The $299 pricing is makes it a good competitor to the other consoles now. I always liked the simple look of the XMB on the PS3, but Firmware 3.0 looks a lot more refined and I liked the dynamic themes idea.

I'm very satisfied with my 60GB launch PS3 that has full 100% backward compatibility (thanks to the Emotion Engine found in launch PS3s).

You are right! I manage to get one in Singapore at a price of S$1,200. With an Emotion Engine built-in, I can play all my PS2 U/C games.

I only hope that either Sony or a 3rd party developer to write-up an emulator and sell it on the PSN for those PS3 that have limited or no backward compatibility for PS2 games maybe at a price of US$4.99. They should use the CELL processor as it is more powerful that the Emotion Engine. Nuff Said.

got my 60GB brick, and i'm happy with that... the minute i found out that they were nixing the backward compatability i grab up the last one...

whats with the buttons?? i love the touch buttons.. now they gone back in technology with a push one... sad really... amazed then that they still have the slot load instead of a pop open then... there's one thing for going cheap... another for going "cheap" on the construction..

well if i didn't own one.. i 'd get this one.. hope they solved the overheating problems.. probably the outside brick for the power supply... owell...

Absolutely no overheating issues. It's mainly ignorant gamers who talk trash about the PS3 saying that to keep people from buying it. I've had mine for two years, and it works fine. It may get a little warm, but that's expected of every single console anyways.
Now would probably be the time to jump in and get one.

And for those of you expecting another price drop, that's just being cheap. The price has already been slashed 50% from it's original $600 pricetag.

Not fussed bout the size of consoles, tis the performance. If I was worried about the size I woulda replaced my retro DS with one of the new DSlites or DSi's.... but I don't like either of em. And I woulda got a normal bigass PS2 if the slimline wasn't a better deal in the place I got it...

For some reason, after all these years, I'm still not convinced to buy ANY of the new gen consoles...

Couple of days ago I got in a store that was selling one 60Gb PS3 for half the price, because it was used on display.

It was really a great deal only because the PS3 had some scratches, but even then, I still didn't feel like buying it (even more because in Brazil half the price is still expensive... out taxes over imported products are crazy).

The new design looks way better with the non-shiny top though.

This looks good and the price seems to fit aswell, As long as it can do everything that the normal ps3 can do then if you dont have one all ready this might be the way to go. Im thinking about getting a ps3 but just need one thats budget friendly and this might work i mean after all it is a gameing consule so as long as it can play games and doesnt have any issues were it will crap out in a year or two then thats good in my books.

think I'll stick with my original white PS3, I find the original exterior looks much better, slim looks like a cheap acrylic box for kiddies to bash with a baseball bat...

i guess games may run much smoother since they removed the ability to run linux on it... but where the backward compatibility? considering the amount of PS1 and PS2 games and machines still floating around, i reckon sony will attract a lot more businesses if they make the slim backward compatibility, think of all the ppl that will ditch their age old PS2 and upgrade to the PS3... that's a lot of money...

Personally for me this came a bit to late :/ the price drop and the remake, Sony should have fired back Microsoft's drops with this but it is a nice sight^^

Clever... why waste money and effort inventing something new when you can just change the wrapping to make everyone think its a new product?

People not in the know will assume its something totally brand new and is somehow better than the original PS3. Sony is just like so many other companies out there right now that simply do not want to take any risks in the current global climate and so we see a tweak of an existing product rather than something more advanced.

This is a definite get for me.

I have a 80GB model, which I ended up getting since the Fry's near me refused to respect the extended warranty that my mom bought with the 40GB model she had gotten me. I had to sell that and got the other one at Circuit City when they were closing.

But in all cases... I prefer RPGs over all other games, even fighting games. And since there are a few coming out (or supposed to be coming out), as well as the fact I did not like the glossy look it has, this would be great to have when I finally get a new place. That, and it would compliment the PSP (3000 model) I plan to get as well. :3

So this is a definite get since it looks like the kind of PS3 that I have wanted from the beginning. X3

yes, this is what i've been waiting for, after selling my original ps3 60gb and getting an xbox 360, after the releases of so many nice exclusives. This is the opportunity to pick this new one up, especially with the price drop from the old console.

there is no point with this slim if there is no backward compatibility. i personally don't get all the hype of the slim compared to the original besides the price. the look is overall still the same just matte. sure it is smaller but i don't think that size makes that much of a difference. it only makes a difference if you were trying to fit it in an entertainment center or shelf that was not accessible before.however i prefer it to have enough room to breathe properly. another downside that i noticed is that there is no ethernet cable. alot of people other than me run their ps3 wireless but it still nice to have that option. there is also only 2 usb slots instead of the 4 that the ps3 originally started out with (great for rock band or guitar hero). if sony had included these missing features for the same price it would be an amazing buy.

Sony loves shooting itself in the foot, huh? It's still bulky. Oh and the lack of reverse compatibility kills it. If I buy one and it comes with reverse compatibility, I'm forced to buy the Japanese one. (PS2 games and DVDs: all Japanese. So, forget the English one!)

Forgot. I may like Germany (been there before), but Germany's not really a place that makes much of an impact in the game world. There's that one music concert (Koshiro-san was in it), but that's it.

So, yeah, Sony needs to stop shooting itself in the foot. Otherwise, it may be better off making appliances only. Side note: haven't seen a Sony anime since what? "Great Teacher Onizuka"?

Gah...and to think that I just got myself a PS3 recently. At least its a used set and not a new one so it didn't cost me as much.

I need to get a new DS3 controller since mine came with the Sixaxis T_T. Not to mention upgrading the hard disk since mine's only 40GB but I doubt I will store anything much in it. My PS3 is in my room and not living room so I won't use it to store my music, videos, etc since I already have my PC next to it.

Design looks okay though. Heard that Sony is planning to sell a PS3 slim which comes with a 250GB hard disk o.O

Its just that nearly all the "exclusive" Xbox games have a Windows version as well, with the exception of Halo 3, Fable 2, and Gears of War 2, and at least one of them will eventually have a Windows version. Since I already have a hot-rod computer that can play these games with greater graphical fidelity than the 360, the 360 is completely redundant for me. Hence why I went with a PS3.

Geez, why didn't they make them that "slim" in the first place. Also, not a big Sony fan seeing how Xbox 360 came out long before Sony released the PS3. I won't be buying a PS3 seeing how I don't play as many games as I used to and there aren't that many PS3 games out there that aren't on Xbox 360. Killzone 2 being one that isn't and I wanted soo badly ^^

And does anyone know of how the backwards compability will be changed or not? Or will a new firmware make it backwards compatible again or how will that work?

Cause one of the big reasons I got a PS3 was that I could play my PS2 games on it. Instead of having to have two consoles at the same time connected to my TV at all times when they are from the same company and all.

Any news on backwards compability? Having a smaller and more silent PS3 is a good thing. But without it being able to play PS2 titles then I have no use for it.

And I want to know more about it before I make any descions about it.

I wrote a comment about it earlier but I don´t think it showed up as it should. So I had to write this comment as well.

    Hope this comment gets trough.

Then there is no need for a new PS3.

It´s a bit amazing though that they can produce something with smaller components to a cheaper price.

Usually it would be the same amount of cost with the former price dropped product. Oh well. For people who haven´t got a PS3 already this might be a game breaker so that they buy it.

No need for two consoles, though I must admit the slim look and price are mighty tempting. The return of backwards compatibility is great news, though it looks a little 'plasticy'. Never used the Linux OS option, so I don't think I'll miss it.

I just noticed that there's hardly any vents for cooling the Slim PS3. Sure there's a row of vents on the back, but none on the front, sides or bottom. My original 60GB PS3 has vents on all sides except the glossy front/top (the side that says PlayStation 3). I guess the power consumption was low enough and with a better heat sink, extra vents wasn't necessary?
