Was just gonna post this just now. Good to see someone's already ahead of me. :)
Slim looks pretty nifty, but less shiny. Since my PS3 just sits there anyway, there's no real point of making it lighter, so I'm happy with my bulky sexy one. Large, and in charge!
Graphic Designer
I really like the new look personally. I prefer matte finishes to glossy finger print magnet finishes. >_>
I already have a launch ps3 though (thank god for backwards compatibility), so I won't be picking up a new Slim model myself either.
McMaster Mechanical Engineering & Management II
http://www.virtualinfusion.net/
Don't have a launch, but had the MGS bundle PS3 with backward compatibility as well.
I'm curious about the Slim's spec comparison compared to it's predecessor. Since it's more compact, has it taken a toll on things? I'm curious, since I haven't been keeping up with the release info on (When you've got the old console, I guess you don't really feel the need to check up on these things; I mean, I'm not going to be buying a slim anytime soon when I'm sitting happy with my fatty PS3 =D)

that what i was thinking but i mean they've revamped the psp with the go so why not do the ps3 slim as well they did it with the ps2 for god sake it's probabally just a repeat cycle.

It's funny. The PS3 is about the size of a small desktop tower, but the PS3-Silm Will be about the size of a classic PS2.. Isn't technology meant to be getting smaller AND more powerful?
Video Game Developer
http://radiantdreamer.wordpress.com
Not really, it's always been "new technology is always bigger than old technology" followed by "refined technology will always be smaller than the previous iteration."
The first calculator was the size of a cash register.
The first computer was the size of a classroom.
The first cellphone was about the size of a thermos.

There's probably gonna be a huge power brick outside the system now. Is it just me, or does the system look kinda ugly compared with the original? And whats up with the power and eject buttons? Couldnt they have used the old ones?
And sony said the slim wont support extra OS installations, so no more linux for anyone who cares. One thing that did catch my attention was the Bravia sync feature sony seems to be trying to make universal with their entertainment units.
But Im glad I have the old PS3 with partial PS2 emulation =)
Video Game Developer
http://radiantdreamer.wordpress.com
Agreed. I think that this new system is mainly targeted at the people who are still on the fence whether to buy a system, rather than the hardcore that already own the system.
The PS2 slim looked much sexier than the PS2 fat, so this is a bit strange to me.
Perhaps they're trying to target the more casual console-y crowd of Wii and Gamecube owners?
Student
I'm not down with the new look either... I really wanted those leaked shots from a long time ago to be fake but I guess they weren't :/ Oh well I'll stick with my 60 GB fat PS3 :D
Video Game Developer
http://radiantdreamer.wordpress.com
Yeah, you'd have thought that if people all over the internet was saying "That looks like some sorta fake chinese rip-off" Sony would pick up on that and do something about the design.
Student/Part-timer
http://random-euphoria.blogspot.com/
drop the power brick comment, seems like they're saying the PSU is internal again. Quite a feat Id say.
And even though current PS3 a fingerprint magnet, the shiny casing really makes it look classy, the matte casing really doesn't come off as the same
Developer/Student
http://threedeecomplex.wordpress.com/
Its too bad that all the current PS3 incarnations are crippled compared to the original models. No PS2-hardware compatibility through the emotion engine, or even software compatibility like in the 80GB MGS4 bundle model, and no slots for memory cards and the like, and they cut down on the number of USB inputs too. Sony even cut back on the physical make-up. The older models used to have Playstation 3 printed on its surface with chrome metallic lettering. Later models used some grayer plastic letters, and now this newest one just carves it into the matte finish itself. Ah well, as long as it can still play games. If this draws less power than the current PS3, I might consider one.
Part-Time Blogger of Moderately Useless Jibberish
http://www.k-jessop.co.uk
Well they could cut back on the hardware and keep the flashyness of it. Can you imagine? "The all new PS3 Slim! Now without Blue-Ray reader! So we can pass on the savings!"
The danmed thing would be worth pennies. But then again, if you have to install games on it anyway, they probably could get away with "Multi-DVD Instalation"
Video Game Developer
http://radiantdreamer.wordpress.com
lol nah, they'd just make the game available for purchase on PSN. Saves them from printing the games, and it saves YOU money! $$$
Part-Time Blogger of Moderately Useless Jibberish
http://www.k-jessop.co.uk
Yeah, You'd still end up paying the same extortionate prices for decent games though. Around here a new PS3 games retails around about £40-£50. Oh for the days when games costs £30 tops. *flashback*
Main reason I can never be bothered with consoles these days.
Developer/Student
http://threedeecomplex.wordpress.com/
I wouldnt be surprised if Sony tried to bring the PSP Go gaming model to the PS3. They just have to wait for broadband to get better though, and ship PS3s with >1TB HDDs. Can you imagine waiting for a 50GB download of a PS3 game that normally comes on a Blu-Ray disc on current "hi-speed" internet?
Part-Time Blogger of Moderately Useless Jibberish
http://www.k-jessop.co.uk
That's like.. a couple of days download time AT MSOT on a high-speed internet. You have to remember though that not everyone is lucky enough to live near the telephone exchange, and here in England Broadband providers are rather picky about the routers you get. They just give out 100megabit routers with their logo stamped on them so-to-speak. That equals 12.5mb connection limit, anything above that goes to waste. So you need a 3rd party router, to actually live in a good location (personally we live near an telephone exchange and can get up to 20mb broadband, but anyone who isn't in a big town around here tends to end up with a speed cap at about 1.5mb. For the record. I only have an 8mb connection, I'm content with it.. being the only person that uses it in the house).
In short. Depending where you live, depends if it's plausable or not. But most likely Sony would be a pain and limit download speeds to a few megs at most..
Sorry to ramble. >.<

Oh well, it kinda looks like an economy-class version of the original PS3... which it kinda is, I guess.
is not that I hated a PS 3 I have already buy 2 of them

http://miragestrike.blogspot.com
I find it more amazing that they can pull this off for such a price. A 120GB slim is the same as the 80GB fat!? I hope they'll have a price reduction on the older models, or they'll probably collect dusts in the stores. ^^'
With the price of an average blu-ray player being ~$100, I think these units will sell like hotcakes.
Video Game Developer
http://radiantdreamer.wordpress.com
I dunno... looking at the overall internet reaction, people are more in favor of the bulkier and sexier model it seems. Feature-wise, this is definitely good news. It's thinner, it's smaller, lighter, and has a bigger hard drive.
Outside of the cosmetics, it's win. I'm sure there will be case-modders out there that are gonna polish it, and make a shine finish. People will want that. :)

I kind of like this design actually...the PS3 was insanely large, and I like the condensed logo 'stead of the Spiderman font chrome.
But, well, I've pretty much given up hope once they gave up on backwards compatibility.
Video Game Developer
http://radiantdreamer.wordpress.com
I do agree. the Spiderman font is kinda lol.
The large-and-in-charge PS3 is pretty cool though. It reminds me of this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9N7k5XvG98
Considering that it's a home console that just sits there 90% of the time, I don't think it's all that important that it's small and light.
university film student | ecchikid | the Archivist
http://www.vimeo.com/longhim
True that. The problem as I see it is that some people don't have room to put it - and it's not very space-efficient because of the rounded design. xP
But yeah, heaviness really can't be that much of a factor.

The PS3 Slim should hopefully get the PS2 gamers to finally make the switch to PS3. The $299 pricing is makes it a good competitor to the other consoles now. I always liked the simple look of the XMB on the PS3, but Firmware 3.0 looks a lot more refined and I liked the dynamic themes idea.
I'm very satisfied with my 60GB launch PS3 that has full 100% backward compatibility (thanks to the Emotion Engine found in launch PS3s).
Otaku ^^
You are right! I manage to get one in Singapore at a price of S$1,200. With an Emotion Engine built-in, I can play all my PS2 U/C games.
I only hope that either Sony or a 3rd party developer to write-up an emulator and sell it on the PSN for those PS3 that have limited or no backward compatibility for PS2 games maybe at a price of US$4.99. They should use the CELL processor as it is more powerful that the Emotion Engine. Nuff Said.

I dont own a ps3( since Im scared to buy one)but is the overheating problem a myth or a true problem?
Student (University)
Absolutely no overheating issues. It's mainly ignorant gamers who talk trash about the PS3 saying that to keep people from buying it. I've had mine for two years, and it works fine. It may get a little warm, but that's expected of every single console anyways.
Now would probably be the time to jump in and get one.
And for those of you expecting another price drop, that's just being cheap. The price has already been slashed 50% from it's original $600 pricetag.

Couple of days ago I got in a store that was selling one 60Gb PS3 for half the price, because it was used on display.
It was really a great deal only because the PS3 had some scratches, but even then, I still didn't feel like buying it (even more because in Brazil half the price is still expensive... out taxes over imported products are crazy).

Clever... why waste money and effort inventing something new when you can just change the wrapping to make everyone think its a new product?
People not in the know will assume its something totally brand new and is somehow better than the original PS3. Sony is just like so many other companies out there right now that simply do not want to take any risks in the current global climate and so we see a tweak of an existing product rather than something more advanced.

This is a definite get for me.
I have a 80GB model, which I ended up getting since the Fry's near me refused to respect the extended warranty that my mom bought with the 40GB model she had gotten me. I had to sell that and got the other one at Circuit City when they were closing.
But in all cases... I prefer RPGs over all other games, even fighting games. And since there are a few coming out (or supposed to be coming out), as well as the fact I did not like the glossy look it has, this would be great to have when I finally get a new place. That, and it would compliment the PSP (3000 model) I plan to get as well. :3

I will soon be a sonyfriend.
there is no point with this slim if there is no backward compatibility. i personally don't get all the hype of the slim compared to the original besides the price. the look is overall still the same just matte. sure it is smaller but i don't think that size makes that much of a difference. it only makes a difference if you were trying to fit it in an entertainment center or shelf that was not accessible before.however i prefer it to have enough room to breathe properly. another downside that i noticed is that there is no ethernet cable. alot of people other than me run their ps3 wireless but it still nice to have that option. there is also only 2 usb slots instead of the 4 that the ps3 originally started out with (great for rock band or guitar hero). if sony had included these missing features for the same price it would be an amazing buy.

Sony loves shooting itself in the foot, huh? It's still bulky. Oh and the lack of reverse compatibility kills it. If I buy one and it comes with reverse compatibility, I'm forced to buy the Japanese one. (PS2 games and DVDs: all Japanese. So, forget the English one!)
Oh yeah. George Forman's Grill ---> Toaster. Enough said.

Forgot. I may like Germany (been there before), but Germany's not really a place that makes much of an impact in the game world. There's that one music concert (Koshiro-san was in it), but that's it.
So, yeah, Sony needs to stop shooting itself in the foot. Otherwise, it may be better off making appliances only. Side note: haven't seen a Sony anime since what? "Great Teacher Onizuka"?
Germany is the biggest gaming market in Europe. ^^

Gah...and to think that I just got myself a PS3 recently. At least its a used set and not a new one so it didn't cost me as much.
I need to get a new DS3 controller since mine came with the Sixaxis T_T. Not to mention upgrading the hard disk since mine's only 40GB but I doubt I will store anything much in it. My PS3 is in my room and not living room so I won't use it to store my music, videos, etc since I already have my PC next to it.
Design looks okay though. Heard that Sony is planning to sell a PS3 slim which comes with a 250GB hard disk o.O
Otaku ^^
I sold my Sixaxis that came with my console after I bought 2 DualShock3, a Black and a Silver ones.

I like the glossy and stylish PS3. PS3 slim is looked cheap plastic mini case IMO.
The good things that I like in PS3 slim is Bravia Sync and HD codec bitstream.

But Bravia Sync only works if you have a Sony TV... ^^;

Bravia Sync is the sony name for HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) like i-link that is sony name for firewire port.

I'm not bothered. I was never interested in the original model and I'm not in this one either.
It's good that it's now smaller and uses less power, but it kinda looks like a bootleg. :/

If I didn't have my current PS3 then I'd definitely go for this. There's a lot of games making this worth the money; Valkyria Chronicles. If that game didn't come out then I think my PS3 would have just been a Blu-Ray player for a very long time.
http://www.nanyate.biz
That's a lot less bulky - still I won't be getting one. As it probably will become my BR player. I wouldn't pay more than $250 for the machine.
One thing that's really unforgivable is that Sony brags about next gen HD gaming and can't be arsed to include the HDMI cable...

If only game save data can be easily transfer without doing the full backup of the hard disk then I'll probably get one to bring around with.

I personally prefer the old PS3 design. It was a real looker. And btw, mine doesn't sound like a plane when it takes off, its much quieter than a 360.
Once they release this, the exclusivity of the PS3 will be gone pretty much.

I hope Sony takes this chance to reintroduce a PS2 emulation system since every once and then I like to play my PS2 games and I don't want always to swap cables and such, damn they even registered a new licence on a PS2 emulation system some months ago, they only have to release a firmware update, damn Sony, the PS2 still comes out with great games give me a good retrocompatibility like you did with the PS2/PSX!
Everytime I look at the "create PS2/PSX memory card" option on the dashboard I grieve in sorrow (not true but it piss me off!)

Afterall why would I wanna replace my Cloud Black edition PS3 with the slim one XDD

No backwards compatibility and old PS3s are getting discontinued. Looks like that I must keep my PS2 in good condition at all costs.

Hmm...
One of those fails of my live I made: Buy an PS3.
That thing is like stone. The only good thing at the PS3 is Metal Gear Solid.
Nothing more. But I wanted give the console a chance but now there arent any PS3 only
good Games.
That's why I love my 360. Maybe it have RROD, but the Games are better, XBL and very important the Gamepad.
Anyway, I won't buy the Slim edition.
And now I can't sold my one with a good price.

As a multi-console owner, I honestly believe that the ps3 has a far better exclusive library than the Xbox 360. Sony's first party teams blow away Microsoft's.

Well, in my opinion, Master Chief and co are better.
But I have to say, that MGS and the coming GT5 are great (even if I haven't played GT5 yet).

Its just that nearly all the "exclusive" Xbox games have a Windows version as well, with the exception of Halo 3, Fable 2, and Gears of War 2, and at least one of them will eventually have a Windows version. Since I already have a hot-rod computer that can play these games with greater graphical fidelity than the 360, the 360 is completely redundant for me. Hence why I went with a PS3.
it pays to wait especially if i'm awaiting ff13's u.s. release before i get to buy a ps3 unit. sweet!

Geez, why didn't they make them that "slim" in the first place. Also, not a big Sony fan seeing how Xbox 360 came out long before Sony released the PS3. I won't be buying a PS3 seeing how I don't play as many games as I used to and there aren't that many PS3 games out there that aren't on Xbox 360. Killzone 2 being one that isn't and I wanted soo badly ^^

And does anyone know of how the backwards compability will be changed or not? Or will a new firmware make it backwards compatible again or how will that work?
Cause one of the big reasons I got a PS3 was that I could play my PS2 games on it. Instead of having to have two consoles at the same time connected to my TV at all times when they are from the same company and all.
unemployed gamer and anime watcher
http://otoboku.se
Any news on backwards compability? Having a smaller and more silent PS3 is a good thing. But without it being able to play PS2 titles then I have no use for it.
And I want to know more about it before I make any descions about it.
I wrote a comment about it earlier but I don´t think it showed up as it should. So I had to write this comment as well.
Hope this comment gets trough.

Then there is no need for a new PS3.
It´s a bit amazing though that they can produce something with smaller components to a cheaper price.
Usually it would be the same amount of cost with the former price dropped product. Oh well. For people who haven´t got a PS3 already this might be a game breaker so that they buy it.

Tbh coz they are both cheaper now and the same price, i'd rather have the big fat one, it looks so much nicer lol. This one is all matt and stuff, and it doesn't have touch buttons.

No need for two consoles, though I must admit the slim look and price are mighty tempting. The return of backwards compatibility is great news, though it looks a little 'plasticy'. Never used the Linux OS option, so I don't think I'll miss it.

It's not backwards compatible. Only the early model ps3's have backwards compatible functionality.

Had heard a rumour that backwards compatibility was returning as a firmware update. Guess it wasn't meant to be :(

Definitely something to look forwards to, especially if it comes with a price drop because... let's face it, it's just too expensive for me to acquire right now. It'd be even better if the online system were improved somewhat, but that's something that will have to wait I guess.

I have always preferred PC gaming to any console. PC gaming seems to give greater playing freedom, though consoles are pretty good for some racing and fighting games.

I always thought the PS3's (physical) shape was hideous, and the slim version isn't any better >_<... At least the matt surface means less of a fingerprint magnet.

I'll buy it, but just because I need one to be in the living room (slim one). my brother is always playing ps3 shooter games so he doesn't needs the ps2 compatibility anyway, but yeah, PC always better for astonish graphics and power, but most commercial games are just for consoles u.u

I just noticed that there's hardly any vents for cooling the Slim PS3. Sure there's a row of vents on the back, but none on the front, sides or bottom. My original 60GB PS3 has vents on all sides except the glossy front/top (the side that says PlayStation 3). I guess the power consumption was low enough and with a better heat sink, extra vents wasn't necessary?

I may have to get this one seeing as even USED PS3's are expensive. My biggest concern is will it be backward's compatible. I half a decent sized library of PS2's games that I still play every once and awhile so I'd like to be able to box up and put away my PS2 so I doesnt get broken.

I prefer the glossy finish being more appropriate with nowadays piano black finishes of simular audio/video devices around your PS3.
But I do like the rest of the design tough' reminds me alot of a duo :)
