I hope my mom would stop judging me on my hobbies...I find it parents to be the hardest to convince.

I wouldn't care of what my parents think of my hobby is something I like and they dont suppose to have a word on the subject only if I was asking them for money to buy the figures.

I actually dont own any figures but when I finish college I am going to have whole room for figures and anime stuff specially because my wife love them too ^^

btw i am planing in studying Japanese, does any 1 know if is really hard to learn?

XD That is very true, my parents don't know the real price of my figures. I usually tell them its 3000yen for a 6000yen figure. And I told them my 2 dakimakura each cost only 4000yen. Boy, if they find out how much i've been paying for them i would definitely be killed.

Depending on your ages ( those with disapproving parents ) all the hobbies that are encompassed into this site most likely were never around when your parents were children with the exception of one or two anime series like Astro Boy and Speed Racer. I know that when my parents were kids and teenagers rock and roll was the new thing and Elvis and The Beatles were where it was at yet many parents did not agree with their children following any of the rock stars from that time such as Elvis with his hip gyrations or The Beatles with their long hair and eccentric song lyrics, but while I was growing up my parents had no problem with my idolizing rock stars but they don't fully understand our hobbies ( those related to this site ) because they were not around when my parents where young. Being a parent of 5 years myself I am pleased that my child is showing an interest not only in anime but also figma and I am lucky enough to have a wife who shares my love for anime though she is hesitant on the figma because of the associated cost for some of them including the dolfie which I don't own any of them yet.

If your stuffs have a high resell value than the original price, it can be a form of investment.

Control information my fren, shows only ur exclusive stuffs and show them how much it is now in Ebay compared to normal price. Assuming that the price of the exclusive item has gone up.

Count the ROI and show them.

This is how you convince your parents that your hobby safer :
      1. Car modding is exp no resell value of your mod car.
      2. If you do street racing, it is a felony and endangering your life and others.
      3. If you go clubbing, wasting life on liqueur/booze. Damaging your liver.
      4. Womanizing, will create alot of issues and unforseen problems. Or whoring which is a felony.
      5. Smoking is committing suicide slowly ^_^ and you are silently and slowly killing others around u.

Toy Collecting hobby, some rare and exlusive figures has at least 30% ROI or higher. Point and case, vintage Transformers toys and others vintage Macross and Mospeada toys ^_^ I rest my case.

When I started collecting anime/manga-related stuff my parents did ask me if I watched my expenses. Then I pretty much basted my room with a boatload of loli-posters (I think the most I had up at one time was 54) - my mom walked in the first time I did that, looked around, and walked out again. My dad walked in an hour later, said 'Wow, that's a lot of posters', and walked out again. That's when they pretty much stopped caring.

Sidenote: they did pay for my display-case, even though it's only a cheap Ikea Detolf, and even a considerably more expensive Lundia bookcase, and they are willing to pay for the largest part of my upcoming room-redesign which includes another Detolf, and several more Lundia bookcases.

Anyhow, after a reasonable amount of manga, Megami Magazines, Comptiques and the like I got a few gunpla, a nice stash of garage kits (which are still unbuilt due to lack of hobby-space), enough PVCs and Nendoroids to not fit in above mentioned display case anymore, I bought some dakimakura... First there were 3 (the fairly well-known Haruhi/Mikuru/Yuki in pyjamas ones), I had my aunt make me a pillow body (20 euros opposed to 70+ for an original was a good deal)... Then things kinda escalated and I'm now at about 25 covers (with more on preorder/in transit).
I kept the one on the pillow reasonable at first - and then I started to slowly put on the more suggestive ones, or turn the less-dressed side up. Right now, I've got this one on it: http://st-momo.hanya-n.net/item/0823.html - did that while they were away for a holiday. My aunt came by a few times to clean - she said nothing. My parents and sister came back - they said nothing either.

I'm kinda starting to think they've given up any and all hope of me ever being normal or having a girlfriend (they've admitted they don't know if I'm gay, straight or asexual - I didn't tell them anything) - but if I ever get one, unless she's seriously into anime, she's NOT going to like my room :)

I can agree with that. The first figure I bought was one of Hatsune Miku, and was in no way scantily clad. My moms first reaction to me asking if I could buy it with my own money was her screaming, asking if i was a homo. Both my parents dislike my interest in anime, but I continue doing what I love.

I actually just got the Nodoka from Saki one as a birthday present. It's really nice, but apparently it's unofficial so it's $98 USD on eBay.
My other ones are Kallen from Code Geass and Mizore from Rosario + Vampire. Both are great, surprising since the Mizore one was $6 USD on eBay. It seems some of the ones that are dirt cheap on eBay aren't horrible, though I'm still weary.

I'm not really interested in dating at the moment for personal reasons, but I'd definitely want to be with someone who shares some of my hobbies. It's more fun to be able to share interests - you can go to events together, and it's easier to understand what each other are talking about.

I could never be in a relationship with a person who disliked my hobbies to the point of asking me to throw stuff out or stop buying it! I have no interest in trading off my hobbies for stability and intimacy.

Must be nice to find your soul-mate :) I think it'd be rather difficult to fall in love with someone who doesn't at least accept your hobby. They may not share the same interests as you, but at least they should be understanding (although it'd be great you could share it with them too). I couldn't deal with someone constantly ragging on me to get rid of my stuff...not gonna happen. I'm rather stubborn about that. You don't touch my girls *guards*

But I've come to the sobering conclusion that I'm just too weird and quirky to find someone. For instance, most guys might think a girl that collects anime figures of girls and refers to them as "my girls" is a bit strange. Or even a girl that is into anime at all and especially one that doesn't really mind fanservice or the scantily clothed girlies present in some series. Plus I'm sarcastic and generally quirky and very few people get the whole dry, sarcastic humor thing, which saddens me.

Ah well. I've learned to see the good parts in living alone. At least I can have my own schedule and do what I please whenever (on my free, non-work time that is). That's a plus. Plus no one annoys me about my spending habits. Another plus. But I'm lacking in the cuddle sector. That hurts the heart a bit :(

*sigh* Such is life, I suppose.

There are plenty of girls out there who have interest in anime/manga.. Just difficult to go up randomly to someone and ask them out of the blue, "are you interested in anime/manga?".

Anyway I totally agree that sharing similar hobbies and tastes, a relationship will go further and more smoothly. OR At least accept their hobbies.

I'm at an age where I've pretty much have given up finding a significant other. On the up side, My condo is paid off, and I can indulge my wants now and then..

They say that there someone out there for everyone. But in my case, she in a mountain village, on a tropical island, on another planet. :/

The few Anime Cons I've been to, I'm starting to feel like some kind of "dirty old man" as there are no Otakettes even close to my age. :p

My girlfriend (of nearly 3 years) and I have pretty much identical interests. Japan, anime, manga, videogames, computers, animals, music... you name it, we're the same.
Collecting-wise, she's worse than I am XD She has 10 times the amount of videogames, anime, manga etc than me. She collects some figures and things too, but I beat her in that because of my Sentai/Rangers/Rider/other stuff collection. (Although she has more Figma than me T-T)

Oppai-wise, she wouldn't be happy at all if I had something focusing on "eyes" or any of the other womanly bits in my collection. She wouldn't try to stop me or get angry with me or anything, but she wouldn't be too happy.
That doesn't bother me though, because I'm not really interested in that kinda thing... Well, figure-wise anyway. XD

Everyday I thank my lucky stars for me having her. orz

My girlfriend is an otaku just like me, she even enjoys bible black (not my cup of tea personally but what you gonna do), so she doesn't really mind that I play the occasional eroge, buy artbooks or even have posters on my walls (though the rule is that the posters I put up should be awesome, then again why bother putting them on your wall if they're not awesome, right ? ). At least my mom's pretty accepting of my hobby. I can tell she doesn't like it though I think it's mostly because of how much I spend more than the hobby itself. ;; Though I'm sure some of it is because most of my figs happen to have huge racks or are dressed slightly scantily, haha. Can't help it if there's not a lot of male figs and the female ones are usually dressed provocatively. I tend to stay off really ecchi figures because of that.

If I don't have anyone with the same line with me, how am I supposed to show my achievements to anyone?
Surely my parents will just smiling at it, trying not to bring me down.
But if there's someone who really get excited together with me, that's all that I need.

My wife is awesome. She actually encouraged me to go to Otakon this year with three of my friends and she goes to any local shows/cons we can make it to. I display all sorts of stuff and she has me make my X-mas list as early as March so she can hunt down figures for me. I got really lucky! She likes to collect Walt Disney Classics Collection statues so our house looks like a freakin animation museum! She is also a huge Ah! My Goddess, Haruhi and Tora Dora fan. (She likes watching Kanokon too...lol!)

Speaking of hunting figures..... I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to where I could get my hands on an Asakura Ryoko FREEing Bunny. lol I know they are getting harder and harder to find but I really want one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't have partner, though having parents is in the same argument. Took a while for parents to start accepting my hobby. though when the topic comes up or whenever new shipment arrives i get lectured the whole day and told to not buy them again. if i keep my mouth shut about my interest then i pretty much can live leisurely.

How did I meet my BF? I was the girl talking Gundams with a friend of his, he got drawn into the conversation, we introduced ourselves, and the rest is history. (I think we were talking about Gundam Wing.)

I like that in our relationship we are able to share quite a few interests. He really got me going into the serious/classic anime (Studio Ghibli, Cowboy Bebop) and, eventually, into MMORPGs. And he supports my wish to take up fandom crafting - sewing plushies, etc. We do have diverging tastes but we are happy to support each other's fandoms.

My fiance and I met because of our interest in anime/manga and Japanese culture. So obviously we share a lot of this hobby together. She was a little iffy on a few figures (mostly the ones that were characters clearly undressing), so I stopped getting anything like that. But she actually encourages me to buy a lot of figures because she likes to use them as references for cosplay! And we had already picked Japan as our honeymoon, even before we seriously started talking about getting married. So I'd say we ended up a pretty good match.

It's really hard when your partner doesn't like what your hobbies are... hehe base from my personal experience it's quite frustrating when your likes clash... I like listening to anime and other j music, progressive metal, classical, jazz, blues and ethnic... and I like drawing and playing music and business... and I like watching a ton of animes and a ton of mangas too... My ex-partner doesn't like my passions... wahahaha that's why she asked me "what's important me or your hobbies?" well you might know what I chose!!! wahaha

That is rather splendid I wondered for a while what your wife thought about your oppai pads and all your things it's great you have someone who is like you! It really is difficult when people dont understand or dont care to understand your hobbies just bc they're not like yours ya know? It must be unimaginably difficult if that someone is your spouse/significant other.

I've hidden the fact that I'm an otaku to most guys that I've dated (I'm a closet otaku XD). Current boyfriend (since 3 years ^^) is cool with my hobby and we will watch some anime together from time to time (as long as it's an anime with lots of action or a funny comedy and not too girlie or childish). He used to watch Dragonball Z when he was younger, and now we are watching Dragonball Kai together every week as it comes out.

He doesn't collect figures or buy any anime-related merchandise though, but he's really into computers and video games. He's really into Street Fighter games since he's young. He came with me to an Anime Convention ( I had to force him just a little so that he comes with me hehehe ) and started kicking ass at Street Fighter in the video game room once we got there ^^.

So I'm the anime otaku who collects anime dollfies and figures and plushies, and he's the computer geek and video game addict. I think we make a nice balanced couple ^^.

My late husband and I both loved animation from all over the world, and he tolerated some of my other geeky tendencies towards tech geekiness and miscellaneous other Otaku subjects. He had to: as a music geek he had his own kind of obsessions which I tolerated.

I don't know what he'd make of my current dollie geekiness. It gets scary at times. I have a stack of plastic drawer things in my bedroom that's as tall as I am and filled with 1/6 scale doll goodness. And now that I'm busy acquiring things for Yumiko, the Dollfie Dream who owns me and the Obitsu boy who's on the way so that Yumiko has a hot rocker boyfriend who attends the same film school as she does, there will be a new high-rise going up of 1/3 scale storage.

Oh yeah, my current BF is not only as geeky as I am but he was the person originally pwn3d by Yumiko. He lost interest. I ninja'd the doll. (with his permission, of course.) It's LUV. ^_^

Just been checking out your site Lester, its pretty chipper. Must be easier to find some otaku women in Japan than it is in Malaysia. Too be honest though its hard enough to find a woman who shares at least of your interests.

at least one interest i meant. Was thinking of starting a girlfriend exchange program. Anyone interested? My girlfriends pretty hot but she is the anti otaku, I would happily exchange her for a second hand otaku girl preferably with low milage and full tax and M.O.T. No canvassers.

I'm lucky as well. Only problem is my waifu often finds it difficult to get over the cost of my hobbies. ^^; She wants a DSLR now that she has used mine. I have never had a problem with anything anime or doll related. I do keep things out of view that I think she will not really want to see very often. I think we are still in that transition phase that all new couples go through. ^^ She never has asked me to not display something or told me I couldn't buy what I want.

Really, I think you would choose to be someones partner if they really disliked your hobbies (I think peoples hobbies are a representation of their true selves anyway). The opnly problem would occur if you developed a new interest after meeting your partner and they disliked that interest. Bit more of a tricky situation then.
