今日の地震がちょっと怖かったね。妻も、娘達も無事です。また大震災のような事になったらどうすればいいだろう。どうしようもないでしょうね。

OK, I survived Reseda/Northridge in 1994 and Sylmar in 1971 as a very chibi-chibi chibi. Northridge felt like "OMG we're all going to die." My memories of Sylmar are sketchy to say the least...I primarily remember being whisked out of my bed and my mom and I under my vanity waiting for the shaking to stop, and the dog barking as if she could chase away whatever she thought was shaking the house.

We haven't had the big one here yet either. And if Japan is overdue LA's 24 months pregnant, if you know what I mean.

No doubt about LA, I fear the next one there is going to be huge. I survived San Francisco myself back in 1989, that was my "omg, I'm gunna die!" moment. haha

I was kind of hoping it wouldn't happen for at least another 4 years which would give me time to graduate college and hopefully find a job out of CA. After the "big one" which is supposed to happen relatively soon I was hoping I could go back and buy a house for dirt cheap.

Yeah, glad to hear that you are okay. San Jose already had a significant earthquake the year before last year. Not as big as the infamous 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, but still significant. (I was still in elementary school when that big one occurred.) When San Francisco will have its next big earthquake is beyond me. I hope it's not anytime soon. I'm trying to go back there before the month's over.

I don't think it's quite so cut & dry. Type of earthquake (sudden jolts, or more of a rolling effect, etc), not far enough or way or any other number of things could help or hinder the creation of a tsunami.

I'm in NYC, and the biggest news here was the mid-air collision of a plane and a helicopter over the Hudson river that killed everybody involved. So when something like that happens in your own backyard, things like this get put on the backburner in reporting.

Very scary thought of an earthquake, but nothing happens in Australia, the most boring country geographically speaking. Middle of a tectonic plate, no earthquakes, no volcanoes the only disasters we get are floods and droughts, and even then I don't get that in Sydney.

important, I was in Tokyo/Yurakucho at the Kotsu Kaikan in the round building on the Top of the building I visit there a phonecard convention (I collect anime phonecards too) and it came in the morning, this feeling was so unreal in this moment, the most of the japanese people are silent a few are nervous but after 45 seconds was it gone...well when I remember this, my feeling says we are all so little humans in a sometimes not friendly world..

I heard that the older wooden houses are greatly affected by earthquakes because those roof tiles are pretty heavy.
I've never experienced an earthquake before, Australia sits right in the middle of the tectonic plate. So no volcanoes and no earthquakes here.

Anyway glad that the quake wasn't too major and everyone here is fine.
BTW isn't this the 2nd earthquake that has happened in the past few weeks?
After watching "Tokyo Magnitude 8.0", it makes me think... it's just a matter of time before an event like that will happen.

At first I was a little startled, but then it went on for a while, and I became really bored, and just went back to doing homework while the earthquake was still happening. It probably lasted for 20 seconds or so. Wasn't very big, but was very noticeable.

Wow that was quite a serious earthquake. The thing is we had one to, though it was a fart in comparison ( arround 2-2.3 on Richter scale). The most noticeable thing was the deep, low rumble. I thought it was a heavy plane at first.

Hmmm, and I still want to go to Japan ^_^ Glad everyone is safe Danny. Now, if a earthquake happened I would be more afraid of the gas lines bursting than anything else. You just need a nice sturdy table to hide underneath from falling debris. As far as the builidngs go, aren't buildings in Japan such as those modern office buildings designed so that they rock back and forth in place to avoid from collapsing? Of course, a wooden house would probably rock back and forth because of the lighter frame.

I never quite realized how scary an earthquake could be until recently, after I came to HK for the summer. In an open, flat area like the suburbs of Toronto, an earthquake doesn't have nearly the same impact as an area where people live packed like sardines thirty floors above the ground.

    I felt a tremor before back in Singapore due to earthquakes in neighborhood country, pretty scary as we live on the 10 floor? ^^;;; It was more gentle swaying but I cannot imagine if it got any worse since many of the apartments in Singapore are made of concrete and are built quite close to each other ^^;;; think dominos effect ^^;;; In Canada - Richmond more high rises are being built, which is a bit disturbing as we're supposedly also due for a big one for a while now too ^^; apparently if there's an earthquake we'll all sink ^^;

how ironic....it almost would have been like the Anime "Tokyo Magnitude 8.0" as a lot of people commented. I guess the creators of that anime are really crapping in their pants now for coming up with an idea like that...

But on a positive note it does paint a preety realistic scenario of such a disaster and simulate what the emergency response plan would be for it. I guess it would also test the goodwill of us human beings if such a thing were to happen. would we react like "every man for himself" or help each other to overcome this disaster??

It's not an idea, It's the earthquake that's suppose to hit japan in the next 30 years, you can call the series somewhat a "simulation" as to what will happen from gathered information.

Glad to see everyone is OK, but with the earthquake occurring in the seas, what about tsunamis? Also, as the Richter scale increases, how does the actual power of the earthquake increase? Is it a linear scale, or something exponential (e.g. a 7.0 is much more powerful than a 6.0 in power ratio compared to a 6.0 to a 5.0)?

I just woke up a short while ago and started seeing all of the news on Twitter. Since it's 2 A.M. in Japan right now, I can't call anyone to check on them. I'm glad that I can read about it here so that I know everyone is safe and there were no major damages.

The only earthquake I've ever felt was 2 years ago in Sendai. I think it was only a 2 on the Japan scale, and it only lasted a few seconds; it happened in the middle of the night. I was surprised that the motion is kind of circular-- like the motion of your hand when swirling liquid around inside of a glass. Since it was my first time, I was really shocked, but my wife didn't even wake up. She is used to it.

    Glad everyone's safe.

Ottawa is in an isostatic rebound zone, it's "rebounding" from when the area was compressed by mile thick ice during the last ice age. The worst we've gotten was a 3 on the Richter scale centered about 20 klicks south of here. Although we've had several quakes reported over the years, I've only noticed one in all the time I've lived here, and that was 25 years ago.

Most people living on and around the ring of fire are living on borrowed time, anyway, but the Tokyo CMA stands to lose many more people due to its concentration of population. I'm glad you live uptown, so there'll be less falling on you when the biggie does come - and it will - but ultimately, are the risks worth the rewards when there's so much at stake? A person's perseverance(?) might carry him/her through hard times, but maybe it's also the thing that brought you into harm's way in the first place.

Nah, Tsunamies are not such big problem for Tokyo as far as I know (but I don't live there so I don't know for sure.). It's usually other cities located out on the smaller islands that sometimes have problems with those.

The 2004 Indian-Ocean Tsunami was really that bad because there were no warning and people had cut down a lot of plants near the beach which usually weakened the tsunami.

On another note: Isn't that simlation of an earthquake in Japan a bit unrealistic? Wouldn't it usually be pretty easy to forewarn such a big earthquake a bit earlier than 2 seconds before it strikes?

Thank god I am not in Tokyo atm, was here from the 31st of july all the way to the 5th of August. Although flight back home was quite eventful, hitting a typhoon on the way back. Wanted to drop by at Harajuku for TFS but realised that by the time i knew the location on 4th august, it was 7 pm.....

Oh well, next time danny! Looking foward to meeting you.

Glad you and wife and daughters are fine. The one earthquake I felt in Vancouver was in 2001. It originated somewhere near Seattle and is felt right across to Vancouver. At the time I was in an office building and for about half a minute, it felt the whole building was swaying back and forth. It was a weird sensation. The building I was in was not exactly new and I am not sure how well it was earthquake-proved. Luckily no one was hurt in Vancouver as far as I know.

The biggest earthquake I can remember myself having was last year here in SoCal. I was in summer school and the 5.4 (richter, mind you) about 15-20 miles out got to us and the walls started making rumbling noises. At first it felt pretty standard (not the first earthquake i've felt) but it quickly turned into a concern. So I looked around with a worried look on my face for about 10 seconds, and a few seconds after the shake, I was like "so should we, like, duck and cover or something?"

The only thing that keeps me from being 100% sure if I should live in Japan or not in the future is the earthquakes.

I can still remember the big earthquake here in Athens in 1999(and it was only 5.9) and I'm really scared at the thought that if I live in Japan I might experience an even bigger earthquake.

Every time I visit a country that doesn't have earthquakes I feel so safe XD(and I use elevators as well.Too afraid of using them at countries with earthquakes)
