but isn't it quite expensive, compared to the other brand which have more spec than

In Australia it costs about $2800 for the 30" HD Cinema display and $1500 for the 24 LED Cinema display. If only they weren't so expensive I'd get one.

Color fidelity vs. reaction time is a tradeoff. It has to do with the type of LCD panel. S/IPS panels have a slow (relatively) response time, but the colors are representative of what you'd see when you print. TN displays are very cheap, but have bad viewing angles and colors.

I bought a stand that rotates at Office Depot and attached it so I can swivel it from horizontal to vertical as need. Only drawback is finding wallpapers oritented vertically so if anyone know a good site to find them, please post a link.

I think at least a quarter of an apple monitor's price is actually its premium, with that said it still is overpriced for the current features it offers. Would probably get one if they drop the price or drastically redesigned it for added functionality (go figure) or just plain awesomeness! haha

IMO, the Apple Cinema Display is just too costly for the job it does.
Not forgetting that the recent iterations have glossy screens and Mini DisplayPort which causes the monitor to be saddled by a poor usable viewing angle as well as being locked down unnecessary standards(making it incompatible with computers with DVI/VGA ports unless a converter is utilized).

At its price range, you can get an IPS monitor from the likes of Dell, HP or Eizo which are more superior in features compared to the Apple Cinema Display. The majority of the price of this monitor is really made up of the "Apple Tax" sadly.

For my Multimedia class last year, we worked with an old stand-up arcade (complete with joystick and buttons) and used a Dell computer screen on its side to replace the arcade's old screen. Everyone in class got into groups and created games in Adobe Director for the arcade and they were made so that it could work with the vertical orientation of the screen. It was quite fun seeing the games from the computer to the stand-up arcade.

Now if we had used a Mac screen, that would have been awesome... =D Expensive, but awesome.

The only thing I like about those displays is there design and it looks really good on your desk. (+ the natural colours maybe). Reaction time not good, far too pricy, no OSD andthe new ones require a Mini DisplayPort which means no go for PC users and even Mac Pro users need a second GT120.

    Danny,

Pretty sure it was my room that "inspired" you:

    http://www.figure.fm/post/en/662/Rorschach+s+OTACOOL+Room.html

It took me a long time to get used to a vertical display, and I always have the option of viewing things on my horizontal one. That makes things much easier. If I could only choose one it would be widescreen for sure.

I prefer horizontal. Also, why take off the elegant foot? You can put Nendoroids and other figures there! ;)

Then, I also have the 30" model. 1600px of height is adequate for any website or application.

With my 24inch dual displays having one dedicated wide-screen monitor swivelled vertically for web browsing is a delight to use, so much less scrolling, plus with so many websites ( DC for example) nowadays designed in a generic narrow vertical blog style a lot of monitor landscape is empty on the left and right of a horizontal wide-screen display.

I do a lot of Photoshop portrait image work and the vertical workspace makes for better work flow, Photoshop's palettes can be spread onto the second screen for user benefits as well.

So each to his own when it comes to using a swivelled wide-screen monitor for vertical workspace and browser work.

    A vertical display wouldn't work for me since I use the monitor as a TV (yeah for EyeTV). Also I read at some time about 4:3 vs 16:9 and it turns out that the brain have an easier time handling horizontal objects rather than horizontal or square objects. Thinking about it I spend more time moving my eyes horizontally than vertically. This means that the top of the screen is a better hiding place than the sides ^^;

Having the screen sit vertically is actually a good method for coding. I've tried it a few times myself and it works great, assuming that screen is used solely for displaying code. For other things it's pretty useless.

My monitor here at work isn't a widescreen, but it DOES rotate strangely enough. I haven't tried it out, since I don't have room under my cabinet for the tall screen, but I may someday for kicks.

With regards to your setup with the monitor on cement blocks Danny, that is definitely something I wouldn't attempt here where I live; too much chance of an earthquake knocking the very expensive monitor to the hard desk and shattering it >< Granted, there hasn't been a very strong one lately, but you never know living in California Y_Y

    a 'creative' type

i can see the situations when you'd use a monitor in portrait mode i.e. document reading/creation, full page websites etc but for general, day-to-day stuff i'll stick to the usual landscape format.

I've seen some nice setups too with portrait set screens, can't remember quite where i saw it, I've seen a desk shot with 2 PC's running 4 screens, 2 24" widescreen in portrait and 2 smaller in normal - think it was for a digital painter so there's another reason for said position.

I have to say i can't say your (dc) desk is either cluttered or well organised...i suppose it's really organised chaos!
