Why this show has such a huge following is beyond belief, very ordinary writing and heavy on the Moe factor I guess appeals to the masses. With the first ep of the second season of Suzumiya Haruhi now in circulation K-ON will have to come out fighting , I guess it's like comparing apples and pears.

Yikes it's apples and oranges (not pears, my mistake) but last weeks K-ON Xmas ep went pear shaped for me.

Oops this is about the figures , sorry I got carried away, I collect the odd figure , but unless Alter or GSC come out with something special these won't be on my buy list.

Naaaah, I'll pass on these trading figures. Not only are they small, but their quality is often poor, compared to larger figures. Basically, you get what you pay for.

K-On is quite an enjoyable anime, but I can't really see myself getting their figures. Just not much of a fan of schoolgirl uniforms. Good dynamic poses and nice instruments would help though.

The trading figures seem like something I'd probably pick up on impulse if I saw them at the local comic shop, but considering how unlikely that would be, chances are I won't be getting any.

As for the mobip figures, they look... remarkably similar to figmas. Everything from the joints to the clear stand (except the mobip stands are round). I'd be iffy about getting one until I read some reviews. I think the quality of the accessories might play a big part in whether or not I pick one up. Mugi-chan just isn't Mugi-chan without an awesome keyboard!

I never bother with trading figures and, in general, I think I'll pass on getting any K-ON figures. The show is okay, but the character designs aren't unique enough for me to bother with figure merch for the series. Unless a truly spectacular figure of Mio in a really dynamic pose with bass guitar in hand is made, I don't think I'll consider any. =^_^=

Trading figures are awefully overlooked by collectors, be them as gashapons or shokugans, especially to those who are not living in Asia.

They are supposed to be cheap and cheerful, so they are really collectible for fans who don't want to spend so much money on them. Their small size and lower quality than PVC figures are priced so that you don't need to spend a fortune to get to be great fans of the characters.

The reason why it's not so popular with the collectors outside Asia, and possibly with a large portion of the DC community as well, is that the import price can make them more expensive than they should have been, making them less of the value than they should have been. The fact that this blog mainly focuses on those high quality PVC figures so those who have been showered with them will not get accustomed to the lower quality stuff anymore.

And the K-On trading figures above are likely to be shokugans (which are like gashapons in a box instead), as I cannot see too much seam lines from them, and secrets are a popular stuff with shokugans over gashapons.

Link for more info on shokugans (and gashapons) for those who want to read a bit more about them:
    http://quentinlau.blogspot.com/2008/10/shokugan-toys.html

I think people should get a bit more accepted with their existance, instead of simply dencouncing the fact that they are lower quality than PVC figures.

Yeah, I agree they really are overlooked. I buy lots of trading figures and do see that the prices are inflated a little to not be as worth the value but sometimes trading and gashapon stuff can be so much fun to have. Look at the Namco Tales stuff or the recent Queen's Blade bust trading figures and you see sometimes they have some great value there but the added import costs make that normally 500/1000 or so yen into a 1000/1500 yen or so figure which isn't as attractive.

A lot of trading figures are higher quality than they're given credit for, really. I think PVCs should serve as centre pieces with trading figures as filling, but I digress.

The thing is, gashapon aren't exactly advertised well precisely because of their low price. Overseas otaku won't buy them - can't - if they don't know about them.
