    That looks really neat.
Luckily I live in a rather rural area so I'm able to see a lot of starts outside at night, although I can't really see them while I'm trying to sleep so it looks like that Homestar would be really nice for that.

While I do absolutely love being able to see a star-filled sky I would rather live in a more suburban area for the convenience of having shops and other amenities nearby.

I guess it depends on where you're at... I've been in a rural part of East Coast where air pollution was less prevalent and w.o.w. I've never seen a night sky dotted with soooooo many stars!!! It was absolutely breathtaking. :)

Ouch 500 bucks... Would be nice to have I guess. I didn't realize Sega makes something that expensive. So it doesn't have to be placed in the center of the room? Does it make a lot of noise when it's on?

This is a sorry excuse for a planetarium. The stars are displayed incorrectly unless you have the right plate to display on. Considering it's designed to work on discs rather than electronics placing the stars there is no way it can measure distances and compensate.

Even though this is a toy and not useful stuff I might still consider getting one eventually. There is something calming about looking at stars. Now all I need to get is money to buy one and somewhere to place it. I don't have room for something like that where I live right now.

One would think that 500USD is pretty steep for a "toy". I'd rather build a planetarium in my own mansion in the future. That is, if I'll ever get that rich.

the difference between small kids and big kids are the price of their toys. Really young kids are perfectly happy with a lamb with holes that makes something that looks like stars on the walls and ceiling.

Paying more for something like this is not the same as it gets any better. I know a guy working at a planetarium so I have seen it backstage. I'm somewhat sure that if people had something like at home, then the would end up not using it. The reason is that first you need to learn how to handle it backstage (it's not like a computer or a VCR) and then you need to spend time every time you want to start it up. I know that I would end up not even using it every month if I had my personal one. It's simply too complex and time consuming to handle >.<

Somehow it can be compared to a steam engine. You need to spend a while to prepare it before it can do anything useful.

Maybe this is for use in heavy urbanised areas where they can't see stars well due to pollution, very nifty. I love living in a sub-urban area where you get buildings but without as much pollution so there is a clear sky to see the stars.

I think the extra buttons are to program for a specific day, so you can see seasonal constellations.

Don't think I'd ever get something like this though. I live in an area that doesn't suffer from too much light pollution and I'm not a serious astronomer. But stars are awfully pretty to look at. One of my best memories of school camps is lying out on the grass and trying to find constellations and talking about how fast the Earth is spinning around.

With it a sound cd with the sounds of waves washing up on a beach and a sound cd with the sounds of crickets and small breezes would be good. At least finally ones girl friend would have something to watch in the bedroom. I used to always want something like this as it is really cool. How would having a blacklight tube affect the show or would it require also the felt like black stuff on the walls for the really psychedelic universe like effects? Anyhow that is really cool, nothing like letting off a days troubles and fading out into a galaxy far far away in a time long long ago. /cue the space fleet ships to move out!

Can't stop thinking about Homestar Runner instead. ^^; Especially since both Homestars have legs but not arms. *bricked*

My view of the stars is pretty good--not much light pollution where I live. It's better at my parents than at the university, but since my school's close to a famous observatory the whole city is lit with the yellow low pressure sodium lights, which minimize light pollution. ^_^ Low pressure sodium lights are made of win, even if people are bothered by the yellow color.

    No thanks.

I like watching stars, and I'm nocturnal anyway. But besides the fact that I'd never have time to enjoy it - I'm either working, playing, or in bed and asleep within 5 seconds - it just doesn't have what's most important for me when I watch stars.

That is, the wide expanse of nature, the feeling of a cool breeze, and the soft chirps of insects at night. The stars are almost secondary after all that.

Sure, it means I'd never get to gaze at stars except for the rare couple of times I get out of the city during the summer, but it's worth it and it makes those trips all the more special.

The 60, 30 and 15 represent the number of minutes before it powers down - very nice looking at the heavens at night while dozing off.

    > the 60, 30 and 15 didn't present the number of minutes before it powers down but it present the time for the star to patrol the earth for one year's time.

I have one at home! But mine is a cheaper (and older) version methinks. Got it from Ebay for USD120 early last year. Didn't come with any of the extra goodies like the remote control. And 'tis plain matte black instead of shiny like Danny's.

I can attest to the quality of the projection that this device produces. For best results make sure to use it in an absolutely dark room with a reasonably high and empty, white ceiling.

Granted this is not a replacement for real stargazing, but for some of us who don't get much opportunity to do so, it's as close to the real thing as it gets.

    BTW, my version comes with only one disc, which displays the night sky as seen from Japan ^^;;
