I never saw the first one. ^^; Kind of didn't want to after I heard the local movie theater's copy caught fire during the midnight screening and was thus missing several seconds, and didn't bother to track it down afterwards.

Those people working on the live-action Evangelion had better get moving quick, I'm thinking.

I don't think movie adaptations have to necessarily follow the plotlines of the source material, but if they don't at least make an attempt at staying faithful to the original's concept they're going to piss off the fanbase, their already built-in audience who cares about the movie the most. (I'm looking at you, Constantine).

Trust me, it was so loosely based on the cartoon that the only thing that came out of it was the names of the autobots and decepticons and the all spark cube and one or two characters. The original story had all the bots coming to earth during the age of dinosaurs and crashing their ship into a volcano. The fight between both sides didn't come about until modern times which would have been the early 80's and was over dominating earth and harvesting its resources to make energon cubes. The main character's father was involved in construction as opposed to what ever the movie ones father does and Megans character was cute hot not dirty hot like she is in the movie.

So basicly the similarities are extremely minor and what the movie has is an adaption that makes it more current and enjoyable for today's viewer's as opposed to those of the 1980's.

The first movie was amazing imo, and I can't wait for this one to come out. Megan Fox just looks so yummy in that dress and Bumblebee crying was funny.

There's actually word going around that GM might not be able to help fund this movie (not sure where the funding would go) due to their financial problem. Hopefully this means a bigger variety of cars in Transformers 3 (granted there is one) and more cars like the Audi R8.

Movie adaptations should follow the basic storyline/principle towards the original cartoon, anime or manga.

As for Transformers that was a great movie, and cartoons were a fun watch on saturdays.

I watched the original film 3 times, in 2 different countries. I wonder what will happen with this film. I probably wouldn't have known this was coming out because I don't watch TV regularly enough to catch the advertisements. Is this where starscream comes back as megatron or the decepticons just decide to terrorize the world again.

Yep Peter Cullen *IS* Optimus Prime, it just has to be!

Hey I have a crazy fanboy wish. Ok, we all know that the transformers, both autobot and decepticons use holographic images to take the place of drivers, so they can blend in more effectively. Well, imagine if the Hologram driver that Optimus used was Peter Cullen. If that happened, that would be so...you know,I can't even describe that feeling. That is awesomeness to a whole new level.

OTOH there is the recent release of the live action Dragonball movie, the less said the better. If you can use the plot and character material creatively the result can be fantastic regardless of the source material. Otherwise the results are going to be less than pretty.

You have to have a good director and producer with vision to make it happen, thats why many other live film adaptations have failed because they were done by inexperienced people. Super Mario Brothers ring a bell? The recent Street Fighter is another and lest we forget Val Kilmer's Batman movie *shudders*.

Ah.... I remember it well. The second one looks as good as the first. Maybe , maybe # 3 will follow. After watching the cartoon clip i just remembered that I have the VHS version of the first Transformer Movie. Has the song "You've got the Touch You've got the Power" that was a great rallying song. That was back in the late 80's remember it like it was yesterday, but yesterdays gone.

My son sold the 2 Jetfires we had in a rumage sale also the Megatron that turned in a Luger pistol. Man i could kick his but for doing that. They were all in great condition, but that was many years ago. Get nostalgic when I think about it.

Am also waitng to see how the Wolverine movie will turn out, so far the comercials for it look pretty interesting. Go Wolvie....my favorite X-Men. Who is everybodies favorite?

I actually prefer movies and anime that differ from their source, because otherwise, you'll already know what/when/how stuff will happen, and then there's almost no point in watching the movie/anime.

I also prefer to think of movie/anime adaptations as spin-offs of their source.

it looks interesting but humanizing them would be hardly my choice. (Optimus spitting? no no)
Wondering if they are following the comics (they released some comics telling a new Cybertron's story and a previous story about this movie).
Something for the people that don't like the original Transformers cartoon.
Think about what your dad or granddad think about the anime or cartoon or whatever you watch on TV, yup, they'll despise it. Also you will despise it, you just need to grow a little more. =)
So lets say, we don't like it because it doesn't fit with our current standards.

Changing the story of a manga or comic is not easy task, but currently seems a job for marketing people, sometimes they steal the "magic" that old generations felt with old titles put on the XXI century. Think StarWars new trilogy.

I have to completely disagree with your assumption about what "dad and grandad" would think, I was a kid when the cartoon was out and have the original comics for it as well and those two differ but that never bothered me and after watching the first movie several times I like the fact that its not a kids movie because I'm not a kid first and if it had followed the original story line it would have bombed from being to boring. If you want cute then watch Ratatoulie or WALL.E which both are good and I enjoy them as well but this movie is not ment to be cute or fluffy and heart string tugging.

I was really disappointed with the first film. Mainly from the story. Had some problems with the FX, too. This trailer has not sold me on this one yet. Some of the FX shots don't look finished.
If there are more scenes of Megan Fox changing her clothes, then I will be first in line. Otherwise, I will wait and see.

I am not a huge Trnasformers fan but I loved the live action transformer movie.Especially when they showcased the new 2009 Camero ^_^. Anways, I don't think movies to follow the anime/manga/cartoon version but it is nice if they at least stick to the general story and don't make stupid changes. Then again, I am not big on the whole live action movie thing if it is based on an anime but is made by Hollywood. They already messed up Dragonball Z for me and now they are going to destroy my beloved Full Metal Panic for me as well.

I might check it out. Not sure. I just know that seeing promise within the second Trasnformers movie brought a ray of hope when it comes to the upcoming G.I.Joe. But that is a different topic and so glad that the director said he based that movie on the Marvel comic series, as it means he is using an actual reference.

As for the cartoon part... Oh Danny! How did you know that two of my faves are Starscream and Grimlock? :O

I'd prefer it if they would follow closer to the original story line... Unless you can actually come up with an story line that would SURPASS the original (difficult to do).
This trailer looks great, tons better than the first movie.

I'm really looking forward to this movie cant wait love transformers and mechs!, as for movie adaptions from original cartoon, anime or manga I don believe it has to follow it 100% of the way, take a look at FMA it didn't follow the manga entirely and it was an awesome anime none the less.

Interesting trailer... Seems like it takes place somewhere near the end of the first one. Hmm... I'm not gonna vote because I'm in-between for some things and oppose one or the other at another time. I think as long as they incorporate the elements from the original well enough then I won't complain much.

Not talking just about movies, I don't think adaptations of a story have to be identical. If that's the case, it's much easier to screw it up for the producer/director or whatever. While it really depends on the skill of the people making it in either scenario, most of the adaptations I've seen that have been good have taken some liberties when it comes to the story or made a whole new story altogether (e.g. the game TRON 2.0).

Adaptations don't *have* to be identical...but it's usually a better bet if they are. Adaptations usually only happen because the original source was good, and if it ain't broke why fix it? Especially if the original fans might be miffed about it.

The problem arises, of course, when the adaptation and source mediums differ significantly - such as between a movie and an epic game. The length and available depth of the storyline is too different. It's important to recognize when something can be adapted without change and when something has to be changed significantly. The latter is a risk that can either be a great success or an epic failure.

It doesn't have to follow the original, especially in the case of movies where things are more difficult to follow in a short span of time. For instance, The Watchmen was still decent without having a giant squid.

Anime series, on the other hand, should follow the storyline of the manga. Fillers aside, messing with the storyline is changing something you already liked. It rarely works, although there are a few cases (FMA is decent although manga is still better). I think the worst thing a series could do would be to follow the manga for 90% and then just change the ending. Claymore I'm looking at you.
