Looks like that was a lot of fun.
I was thinking of getting a camera like the LX3, I don't know how far I'd get into photography but the thought of owning a DSLR excites me.
I'm a person who doesn't like people talking about me in a bad way or thinking I'm things I'm not. So I have a different social face. Meaning I'm a tad embarrassed about owning some of the more 'fleshy' figures.

The LX3 doesn't fit into the DSLR category I think.

Many of the photos on DC are proof that the LX3 performs very nicely for a compact.

Looks like a great do, Danny.

I think one of the big reasons why people are afraid to talk about collections like figures, stuffed toys, video games, and sometimes even BJDs has to do with ages and the perception that "one must grow out of wanting to play with children's toys", hence the embarrassment that you noted.

re the armor: I think I will vote in favor of you weathering it a bit. sand up some parts, make it look like you've survived a few battles. :)

I agree, people will sometimes associate figures with younger people, but I guess the only way to solve that is to help explain the difference to people.
However, Japanese figures usually look much more detailed than normal children's figures in shops, so people should be able to tell the difference just by looking.

"people should be able to tell the difference just by looking"

not everyone can do that, though. mostly, you have to rack that up to prejudice. it's the same explanation whether the question is "why did you get that scale model of the millennium falcon/enterprise/serenity/optimus prime?" or "why did you get a saber/nanoha/rin/haruhi figma?" to prejudiced eyes, a scaled-up, museum-quality item is still a toy if it has to do with certain fandoms. *shrug*

That sleeper would have been me. No matter how much I'm interested in a presentation or a speech, if questions are not allowed and I cannot enter a dialogue with the presenter, or get engaged in any other fashion, I usually fall asleep. I guess its sort of a built-in instinct to catch up on as much sleep as possible, because I never know when I'll need to pull my next all nighter to get something done.

I guess I'm a tiny bit embarassed at owning figures, but only because here in the UK there are still so many people who don't know much about the whole manga/anime scene & think that it is in its entirety either fairly childish things like Pokémon or 'perverse' things like erogē. They don't realise that they are just different art mediums for portraying audio/visual entertainment & can judge harshly based upon their warped beliefs.

Why would any people be embarrassed at owning figures is beyond my comprehension. If you have it, doesn't that mean you must have love it? Those figures deserved the love! If you care too much about what other people think, you just might lose the sight of the real you.

Ah! That fellow with the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard is using it with a Viliv S5! Very awesome tablet, and it runs Windows 7 very well. Unfortunately for iPhone owners, the iPhone does not have the proper Bluetooth profile built in to use a Bluetooth keyboard.

I think people who are embarrassed about owning figures are thinking about one or more of a few things:
    1) That people think they are wasting money.
    2) That people think they are playing with kids' stuff.
    3) That people think they are dirty/perverted, in the case of erotic figures.

If you think about people embarrassed about any topic, it's usually because of at least one of those three, isn't it?

I myself own a few Nendoroid petits ^^

Oh! Before I forget (sorry about the double-post) I think one of the historical reasons for all the foreigners - besides the embassies - is, after the Second World War, the military built bases in that area. Also, aren't a lot of multinational conglomerates hq'ed there too?

As for figures, I'm not really embarrassed about owning and displaying them, then again I only own Gundam's and what not. If I had an anime related figure of a girl then I might be embarrassed depending on the pose she's got.

As a girl, it's a bit embarrassing to have so many female figures. Don't get me wrong. I love each and every one of them to death and don't mind showing them to anyone who enters my room, but it's kind of awkward that I don't have any non-Nendoroid male figures to help balance out my growing female army. I know there are quite a few male figures released as well, but I haven't purchased any because they really look sub-standard next to their female counterparts. The figure market really is focused towards males and so the girl figures are so amazingly sculpted with really detailed eyes, faces, clothing, and hair. For the most part, male figures seem to be an afterthought without as much attention to detail (especially for the eyes, face, and hair). They almost never have any interesting and daring poses, and there just isn't as much care to make them look exactly like the character designs or express varieties of emotion. When a male figure IS made, they almost ALWAYS look pissed off or disinterested. Two emotions. Period. Just a quick glance around my room at my female figures and I can see a wide range of expressions including shy coyness, surprise, disapproval, joy, sadness, and flirtatious (just to name a few). The male poses tend to be pretty tame and static. One of the few male figures which was made fairly well recently was the Kamina figure from Eye Up. Even then, I held off because there still seemed to be something a little bit "off" about the figure. I can't really name it. I've been hoping that soon there might be an even better, more epic figure of Kamina released in the future. Maybe I've missed my only chance. I hope I haven't. I'd easily fork up a small fortune for a truly epic figure of Hitsugaya Toushirou from Bleach with Hyouinmaru in a fantastic pose as well made as GSC's Saber Lily or Alter's Fate Testarossa. The same goes for Kamina, adult Simon, the boys from Shining Tears/Wind, the boys from Tsubasa, any Yuu Watase guy, etc. The chances of me ever even SEEING something like that are pretty much nil though as long as sculpting spiky-haired male figures results in the equivalent of porcupine heads. I know it's a bit harsh to say, but I'm pretty sure you could take a figure of Naruto and a figure of Ichigo (Bleach) and interchange their heads without really being able to tell much of a difference. Anyhow, I would feel a little less awkward about my figure collection if I had a few suitable male companions to help balance out my growing harem. =^_^=

Depending on what the figure is, I might be embarrassed. The stuff I get is usually a character I like or from a series I enjoyed. My friends will also follow this trend but some of the presents have been on the questionable side. Family and maybe other friends might ask why I have a bunny girl Nagato Yuki in a triangular prism case... my answer would be present from a friend but after that, I have nothing to say...

Quite a few little presentation booths about the place and alot of people at the event, good to see that DC readers were there. I love the custom Drossel pokem someone made, maybe If I do grab one i'll have to shape something.
I thought the popularity of Roppongi for gaijin was the nightlife that was there, of course many people are attracted to the number of bars and clubs there during their holidays.

I honestly don't know anyone on base who collects anime figures. But I've still been seen doing photoshoots and even did one on the mess decks of my ship with no Otakus around. Occasionally, I will get the "he collects girly Barbee dolls" or referring to my figures as a "Barbee Doll". Some have even said "anime is unhealthy for you" or wonder “does he like little girls” because of the figures I buy.

    I don't let it get to me. I like what I like and am certainly not embarrassed about it. But, I'm not so comfortable that I'd bring a Dollfie Dream out on base or on the ship for a photoshoot or something. ^^;;

I would go for a poken, if it would be used more... but wherever i have went so far people still stick with the paper cards.
Also, i would like a more anime related design for a Poken, like Nendos or such. ;)
The current ones aren't bad, but don't really do it for me, so i wouldn't buy one unless more people around me would use em too...
If there was a cute anime design one i would go for one in any way.

And in case of being embrassed... recently at the office the secretary trainee asked me if i got more of these "Dolls" (i had Figma Haruhi with me) and i said "ofc plenty!" - the reply of her was an little awkward but stil nice smile.
When we tested the new Projector, i ofc tested it with a anime (Umineko and Tokyo Magnitude), so she asked "and you watch that all day?" - no i work besides too... ;)

She wasn't really offending or anything, now that i think about it she maybe was really curious but also afraid to ask more... hmm... maybe next time. :)

BRS, figma Mirai and Saber all look so great!

And yeah, I'm quite embarrassed about owning figures, because nobody in my *real* (ie not interwebs) world understands it. Today I was in the train with another intern from the company and when I said I'd love to go to Japan after graduating, he asked me why. I could only stay vague and say I like the people and the culture......couldn't even bother to say I plan on raiding Akiba first cuz he wouldn't get it anyways.
And another point of 'not getting' it was another friend: made some snide remark that I'll never have kids if I only have pvc girls.......-___-

People get embarrassed about owning figures mainly because people who don't share the same interest love to insult people who aren't main stream. I got into figures recently(Figmas ^_^) but I always owned action figures from American comic books. I eventually got interested in anime(Gundams to be more precise) thanks to Toonami on Cartoon Network. I bought almost all of the Gundam Wing action figures and all of the Endless Waltz figures. Awe, the good times ^^ The main reason why I haven't bought figures until recently was due friends(at the time), insults, different interests(influenced by firends/family), older siblings, and my father ^^. After meeting new friends in high school and growing up, I could finally get back to what I have always liked but was always condoned for: anime ^_^ Now, I am back to buying figures, posters, anime, wallscrolls, etc.

P.S. By the way Danny, I didn't notice Mirai's missing braid at first. I hope Figma Mirai will be up for sale stateside soon ^_^

Try collect the 00 Gundam series. Exia is quite a nice Gundam to collect, apart of other Celestial Being Gundams.

What's the point to buy any figures and don't display them? To display is to show, and to show is to appreciate. Of course, to appreciate alone is not quite enjoying than with a few friends to appreciate with.

What's with the "Do Not Touch" sign? Is it for Saber or for the Pokens. Can I touch?

The event looked great... one question: why the eye-fi didnt work for you? I was thinking of buying one for the LX3 to copy the files to the PC without removing the leather case... But, will it work?

I'm completely, 100% embarrassed about having my figures. To the point that if people outside my small group of friends found out, I'd move.

I'm bullied fairly constantly about watching anime, and was actually beaten up when people found out I went to a con. If people saw the Gunpla and Nendoroids on my desk, I would probably just give up and move to a neighbouring town.

About being embarrassed if I collect figures, umm....a not really I guess. Well when guests find out I collect them I just tell them that its cool and I think its cool and unique compared to some people I know who desperately hides it. To my friends who don't know yet, I always give them hints that I like 2D girls whenever i play fighting games with them.

Anyhoot... figures... I'm kinda embarassed because of the amount of figures I have, not the figures themselves XD A! Nice to see the DC readers gathering in one spot! Are those Lumix LX3 on one table from the same DC readers as well?

i'm so not observant.. i was gonna say the "d" logo was missing from the poofy sleevies..

and no one else found it funny that danny is cast-offable? lol

i used to think collecting figures was a waste of money, b/c you're buying a piece of plastic that doesn't do anything.. even action figures do something, and they're way cheaper!.. but once i bought my first figure, i was hooked.. a well-done figure captures the essence of the character and brings back the memories of the series and the feelings i had watching it.. that's why i don't generally buy figures from series i haven't seen.. and of course when i eventually do see a series and want to get something from it, i'm already too late and the figure is out of print.. and i have to spend even more money to get it on the secondary market!..

I thought the difference with Mirai was that her ahoge was taller and she was shinier lol. It would be nice if her braids were rubbery like Shana's so she can have more poses.

I'm a little embarrassed about having figures (just figmas, nendos and nendo petits) and don't show them to strangers, but I've started taking them out to take food pictures with and posted photos of them on my facebook.

    Ehhh! Mirai Figma yay!

As for the whole "embarrassed to own figures" thing, I have a different reason. Many people at my school call me homosexual because I have a high pitched voice. Only my best friends(end enemies)know about my figure collection because if people knew I had figures I would never hear the end of it. "Gonna go play with your dolls Pickle?" That would not help all of the teasing I get.

Of course, they don't realize that some of my figures have some pretty nice eyes.
