That's actually a good comment about the "smokers" thing. I think that people that literally piss away their money like drinkers probably spend a comparable amount in a month to people with more, er, "productive" hobbies like anime/manga/games/Gunpla. However that doesn't mean it's not damaging. I would've finished my bachelor's degree a long time ago if I didn't needlessly spend money on molded plastic that I really didn't need, versus paying for school I still need to finish up. =/

It might seem like we are rich because things are accumulated over time. Now if you started this month and the room looks like the one up top, then you are rich.

In today's economy, many people find it difficult to find money left over for their hobbies. After seeing such rooms, I too, believe they are owned by the rich.

As for spending less money than smokers, I tend to agree, but then most of the smokers I know are quite poor due to their habits.

Rich? Not in the slightest. Just conserving what cash I have to spend on the stuff I love.

Im poor considering Im in school with no job. I get about $300 every two months from my parents which pays my bills, gas, and food. Extra money goes to my hobbies. =]

This is me as an otaku:

-Does not have any DVDs. Hoping some series he wants will come state-side on BD format.

-Does not have any manga. Hoping to find titles that are easy to collect and are not the "never ending" type. Also had to stop collecting one.

-Does not have any PVCs. Had one but it was "Huh..." when I finally took it out.

And so on. XP

I just got some shelves from Ikea, and the detolf ones. I'll totally post my room when I can.

Maybe they think we're rich because they're taking into account the cost of shipping stuff out of Japan along with markups...

That or Japanese otaku are just as poor on average as the rest of us!

Intersting to see the order of all these rooms, I mean I dont have an 1/8 of the stuff seen in the video yet, I manage to have my room soo messy.
I believe if I had a couple of cool posters over here and over there, a couple of PVCs, I´d take care of my room hehe, however, just as Patrick above me mentioned, no moneh.

I can identify with the rich comments. That's what people thought of me when I was spending loads on music when younger. Thing is if it's a hobby or passion, you normally direct your spending on it.

Some of those are definitely rich, otherwise why would they make their rooms look like crap. The one that had some posters in frames on the wall was by far the best one. I'm using that idea now :)

With how my job is in the crapper right now due to the economy, I can't really afford in getting more things. Heck, last thing I brought for myself was my Konata Figma about 2 months ago.

If I had a higher budget then I can get more figures, but unfortunately that isn't the case so I have to manage with what I got and what I can get...

I consider myself as an average student with average allowance. Yes, yes, my friends think that i am rich as i spend hundreds on my hobby per month, but they never see how i try to save on transport, food and other entertainment. Also, most of the money i spent on my hobby aren't from my parents, it's my pay that i got from my part-time during my holiday. =3=

I don't think it's showing off by sharing our room. It's a joy to share. XD

I'm going to be a typical poor college student without a job. ;_;

As for me very poor desu. Though I'd say back in the day I spent loads of money on games $50 bucks for a new release have about 70+ games though not all of them were bought at 50. Saw some who had an insane amount. I sort of regret buying that much games, should have got into being an anime, figure, etc otaku sooner than using all those munny I had back then on games.

When I saw them I definitely thought some of them must be rich and others probably have been collecting for a long time.
All these imported things can get expensive after a while. @_@

But it's fun to read the Japanese people's reactions.

My answer to some of these comments:
"These guys are rich!" - No... my credit card company is rich ^^;

"Where do they sleep?" - I had to answer so many of these questions lol. I manage to sleep in there albeit a lot of creative Tetris-like positioning XD

"Why do otaku like to show off their rooms?" - I didn't intend to... it's because of the giveaway that I did it lol. Otherwise none of you will see any inch of it XD

"These look no different than Japanese otaku rooms!" - Looking at the picture above was what I thought to be similar to my room ^^;

"What do gaijin (foreigners) parents think when they see this?" - My mom always say "kapal pecah" or "shipwreck"

"Scary!" - Unfortunately it is =_=;

amazing! how long did it take to collect all that? ever since i started working i have been able to expand my hobby collection... and thanks to impulse buying im becoming poor lol

I spent a lot less money on basic necessities like food to support my hobbies, it's not like we're rich.

Their rooms are awesome, I can never have anything like this. My room is too small my furniture sucks, lets say my room proportions are 20% Books/Manga, 5%~10% Figurines, 40% Furniture, 10% usefull to junk stuff, 20% free space. My room is small so it doesn't let much free space.

Man I don't know if I should mass spend my money on these goods... I want to yet, im afraid killing me budget.

I really enjoyed looking at peoples rooms it was pretty enjoyable, as for being rich I'm just really good with managing my money and a lot of the things in these rooms have mostly been acquired over a long period of time

Wow... I made the top of that page. >.< I'm not exactly wealthy, but I do have a steady income which allows me to pay for necessities and have enough money left over to buy the things I want...

I also think a lot of us have a bit more space to play with than the typical Japanese otaku. I Have a 1500 sq. foot home which I share with a cat, so I have plenty of space to decorate as I choose. I almost have too much space, and I haven't done anything to change the wall colors despite living here for over a year...

Rich? Not really.
Quite frequently I find myself squatting in front of the gunpla shelf in the store, calculating yen conversion, working out the money left if I spend. Don't really buy blindly now (well not that often).

Besides the gunpla stash is really piling up and I'm pretty much limited to my room only.

My friend asked me, "Why do you spend so much on gunpla?"
I can't really answer him.
Maybe I make gunpla as a mark of my existence?

If I knew people from Japan would have looked at the Otaku room photos. I would have shown all that I own and not leave them in my drawers and Plastic bins. -_-

Not too rich but my average, weekly paycheck allows me to survive the week and still have enough for at least one gundam or other hobby material.

People easily complai about money, and on saturday night they spend a lot of money.
If we are done with something, we can sell; if you are done drinking/smoking what do you sell as used? Sounds a bit SM...

$70 dollars for a figure or $10 per manga isn't cheap. I had to stop buying them a while back. I've been trying to get a job but it's hard.

Madarame from Genshiken is a great example to use here.

Hum. I think I spend more on textbooks every semester than I have on manga... ever.

Though I only started buying after I got a part time job for living expenses and discovered the wonders of a Kinokuniya.

I can see why they would think we are rich, but I most certainly am not.
After paying what few bills and expenses I have, I'm just lucky enough to have some left over for me to indulge in my hobbies..
That and my collection is the result of my spending over the course of a few years.

all depends on how the person spends his/her money. even if that person has a low paying job, but spends 100% of their salary on anime stuff, he/she is bound to have a lot of stuff no matter what.

I wouldn't say I'm POOR. I get my food, has a PC and most importantly is surfing the netz. I'm amazed at how many voted poor..

Though I don't have much money to spend on hobbies i.e. figures etc. I'm struggling to get myself a new pc lol. I think spending on hobbies is a luxury. I'd say I'm average.

As for the >These guys are rich! comment, I'd say it depends.. Over here a figure is surely expensive thanks to the exchange rate. Even if sold at retail price, a nendoroid can cost over RM100. And you get around rm3/hour for working part time in fastfood restaurants. That means RM24 if you work for 8 hours. IF the K-On! pay is accurate, that means working on the traffic test thingy earns RM287 (8000yen) in one day.. Or maybe 8k yen is for 4 of them. Then 2000yen = RM70 - the pay here is still inferior to that amount. Do correct me if I'm wrong o.o I might be taking K-On too seriously. lol

So I guess it all depends on where you live.. For me I'm a student with RM30 allowance every week.. Being a teenage that craves for moar and moar food, I use at least RM10-20.. Saving RM10/20 weekly doesn't sound good does it? Thats why I don't get many figures a year.. Most importantly, I don't think that makes me poor ^^;

My family is average, but I'm a student so I don't have that much money myself. I'm just careful what I spend it on. I don't drink or smoke, which cuts down on costs, and I don't really buy much besides essentials and hobby stuff. I've definitely had to cut back over the last few months, though.

I don't drink alcohol or smoke so that actually means i have enough to buy all the cool stuff i like.
Unlike say some of my friend or people i know who are like "Last night i spend £70, got drunk and can't even remember what a great time i had"

Hehe, all the same indeed. Spending money on your hobby doesn't say anything about how rich you are, allthough some rooms definetely show that their owners have something extra to spend ^^;

I'm so poor though, I'm dying to get an HD-tv, media center pc and loads more figs (who doesn't), but yeah, need to save up first though...

Rich, poor or something between? Hazily answered poor and only afterwards started thinking. Food, car, apartment and little to spend on hobbies. Ok, my car cost less than a dollfie but is a necessity around here to get a job so theres no choosing. When you advance to the next level you get 1% more to spend and 7% more paperwork...

Yes I get my fundamental needs filled most of the time and a little more. Happy with that.

Well, I'm not poor but I'm not rich either. The point is that currently in my life there's others aspect that I care most compared with my "otaku side", my job, my family, my studies, etc.
For the same reason, I would never have a room like that, maybe if I'd be 20 or less that could be for real but, as I said, that's not something for me.
Of course, I really like to be witness of other's hobby rooms because there's a lot of fun doing this and that's one of the reason why I spend time on DC when I'm sailing on the internet ^_^.

People will always spend money on their hobbies, so it's not a question of being rich or poor. If I would have spent all the money I paid for cigarettes, my car or on the house on manga and anime stuff, even my garden would look like an otaku haven.^^

rich or poor, people spend more on the hobby/ hobbies they really love. After a certain stage money does not matter to them, just having a desired product in their hands is sufficient to bring them the pleasure they want.

Just different way to spend your money, a zero sum game...

I am what you call a poor Otaku. My room barely has anything in it that is anime realted but I do watch anime like it's my job ;p. Anways, to get some of that stuff, you have to have a little money coming in or your parents give you an allowance. Working a job would help, of course. I personally don't think that you call somebody more of an Otaku just because of the stuff they have. Unfortunately for me, I can't have that much eye-candy in my room without raising some eyebrows ;).

being oversea means that i don't have control of the place im staying so cant renovate the room into otaku style .. hmm if everthing goes well im going to fill my room back in M'sia with otaku stuffs whe i go back ^^

It's my impression that most people here (northern Europe) have more or less the same after taxes. Sure there is a differnce between people but usually the difference is too small to call people rich or poor.

The people proclaiming that they are poor lacks savings and usually borrows a lot of money. Whenever TV shows something from poor people, they smoke, has lots of candy, nice TV (maybe not the newest model, but still nice) and so on. "Rich" people are people who can save up and buy a new TV or similar. I think it's more like controlling the cashflow rather than income.

I have an example of this. A friend of mine said he wanted to buy a video camera. However he wasn't rich like me (he had a higher income than me though) so he had to buy it in a store where you could pay something every month for a few years rather than having the money ready. I then had a little chat with him about the price of borrowing money. He ended up borrowing the money in the bank and get a decent interest on it because he had a job with a stable income and used the money to make a one time payment when buying the camera. Doing it like that saved him more than $100 in interest compared to if he borrowed the money in the shop like he planned to do. You guys should keep this in mind too.

It does take money to import a Japanese hobby. Since discovering figures a few months ago I have, easily, spent many thousands. The postal guy is tiring of getting my signature. Any day now I expect the wife to 'confront' me. Hell, maybe I'll get a full blown intervention. Maybe I need it :)

Not necessarily rich,
But obviously priority goes to funding hobbies(less money on food and clothes and moar on eroge and dakimakura (^_^)/........).
I'm still ronery so moar money goes to figures and gundams.

i like to economise - then blow loads of money on something i've been waiting for.
More sense: it's that i rarely buy often, but when i do, it's something huge and probably fulfils several requirements rather than just one

so for me, anime + manga merchandise is often a no-no T____T

I personally have a separate room where I put all my books, manga, magazines
which I like to call as my library
now it has become my brother's house...as we like to call it his 'apartment'
my mother don't like it if I paste any posters on my room's wall
so I had to frame almost all of my posters
I don't think that buying loads of mangas and anime make you rich
you just happen to invest alot of your money there
just like how some people smoke like you said
and like how people who are interested with car modification

im gonna confest right now that i over spent this month.

i hope soon there will a poll about the age of Otaku's and i like to know when will they realize to give up this hobby for other reason like economic problem, parents, fried/girlfriend,etc. Most outsider don't understand the collecting part of mechandise,dvd, manga's.They see us like weirdos .
