Very inspirational story shows that if you try hard enough even the most dire of situations can turn to good and I fully congratulate the guy for doing what most people even in a better situation that him would try to.

Great photo's, I've really gotta find out what I'm doing wrong with this photo taking malarkey as somebody said photography is 90% the photographer and 10% the camera, must mean I'm terrible ^.^ its great that you've posted the camera settings gives me an idea on what to try etc.

Wow that was a great story about Kanemoto-san. Very inspiring. It shows that you shouldn't give up no matter how hard it ... oooh a takoyaki stand! Ummm, yea, that story actually reminds me of Tenrou-san now. I hope that when I hit a wall, a really big, thick hard wall, I'll be able to overcome it.

Hmm... and not a lot of people in this article are camera shy, eh? I know some of us here in DC.com are quite camera shy and don't like showing our faces online, especially if our name is tagged along with the photo. I wonder if that will change one day...

    So the security really brought backup? ^^;

The UK police have been a bit heavy handed in prohibiting photography in public places lately.

In the west, it is generally acceptable to take pictures in public places. Not sure what the laws are like in Japan but the security guard shouldn't be allowed to stop your picture taking if you are on a public walkway???

Awesome impressions of Tokyo once again... you know how to promote this city. ;)

I wish gatherings like that would be possible here or even make sense... but it's hard to find nice spots to take pictures in the area here, to much dirt around tbh.
While in Tokyo everything seems nice and tidy, or you have more spots that are like that compared to germany. ;)

And i bet, if that women would have been some idol or 2D person, you wouldn't have forgoten her name hehe! :P

The LX3's better night shots are probably best attributed to the bright F2.0 aperture, it just lets a whole lot of light in.

The Canon 50mm F1.8 Mk II is a good cheap night lens but on the Kiss x2 it has an effective focal length of 80mm making it unsuitable for wide angle shots. I use the Canon 50mm F1.4 USM which is an even bright lens but find it difficult to use for large landscape shots.

Canon has bright 20mm and 24mm lenses but their "L" (pro) series and cost a premium :(

Yeah, the LX3 does benifit from a nice fast lense... Got mine today and have been trying it out. As a matter of interest Danny, what white balance settings are you using? Or is it a custom set?

I still don't reckon it's low light performance is as good as the DSLR... though I've been spoilt with an great set of lenses... and having seen a friend snapping away in low light with a 14mm...

Still for a compact: very impressed.

Low light performance on a DSLR depends on the type of lens being used to. If it has a wide max aperture like the LXR, then it should be equally matched. But you can bump up the ISO on DSLRs without too much concern for noise levels since they tend to perform better in that respect compared to compacts.

Depends on how old/cheap your DSLR body is though ^^; Ours is pretty ancient and tends to suffer noise at anything above ISO200... hence we threw money into lenses to compensate. Got a resonable f2 70-200mm telescopic and a (I think) f4 24-105mm which do alright.

        It's not just an issue of lense speed though, but the way it handles colours, sharpness of the image and contrast/detail in light and shadow as well. I guess the LX3 is probably on par with what the 300D DSLR was managing with it's stock lense set. Yeah, 300D, I desperately need a body upgrade... next on the saving list is a 5D, but that's a long way off yet... after the headphone upgrade, trip to Japan, proper espresso machine ^^;

Wait a little longer for four-thirds sensor technology gets more refined. The first models are just being released. Ideally, you get near DSLR quality sensors in bodies at the upper range of compacts. They won't be cheap, but they will span the best of both worlds. I was on the verge of getting the Lumix that Danny uses, but I blew my gadget money on a Viliv S5 MID. I might try to sell it because I recently realized how much I loved photography and want to take better pictures.

    What an awesome story

I've actually reached the endpoint of a part of my life. College life is ending this week and then it's out to the big 'beyond' - I guess this also is the most scary part of my life and the most challenging and exciting at the same time!

You do any kind of enhancing on your photos danny ?

And that is a pretty inspiring story; very movie like I suppose.

With me being unemployed and in debt in this economic depression, kind of wish I had some similar trade skills I could use to find work. Unfortunately all I have going for me, is my skills in customer service. A very essential skill to have, however to make the most of it, it should be paired with a trade skill of some kind to really gain success. (like some kind of IT related skill)

VERY insipiring story Danny, as someone who is also out of work (Have been since leaving college) and also at a crossroads in my life the article certainly gives me something to think about and ponder.

It's only recently that i've decided to change what potential career I want (I'm only 21, maybe i'm being a bit too dramatic lol) from something in ICT to Teaching and currently over the next few weeks seeing if I can get into a University to begin the training to do so, if after 4 years I come out as an NQT (Newly Qualified Teacher) then I can feel i've done something with my life because as of right now I feel 'empty' if that makes sense.

Danny, you've really got yourself a great deal on your Lumix. it captures the moment nicely with a very good layout of
the lighting. Least in japan, some of those try to make a living while majority here in PH just prefer to ask for alms. Although who are we to criticize them so much but i do feel sorry for them.

I was only expecting a good photo review when all of a sudden a story of success came in. The article then became a 100% win for me. DC had given me so much inspiration from getting serious on my course and aim higher.

We have a saying here in the PH that goes
" Pag may Tiyaga, May Nilaga". Translating this, it means that if you continue to persevere and never lose track of what
you aim for then you will eventually reach the goal and claim your prize.

Many thanks again Danny for another awesome article.

That Story is very inspirational , I've read a book once on how to be rich steadily .

There was this one quote that I would always remember " If a person is poor that means that person is mentally thinking that he/she is poor , That person must mentally think that he/she can get rich by working smarter and harder" ( Memory is kinda fuzzy ^^;;)

One cannot be rich quickly ( except for lotteries ). As I learned , there are No shortcuts in life , there will only be walls that YOU would overcome it by yourself .

Also , Try donating some money to charity and the poor as GOD will return the favour to YOu in time .

Wow Danny, great pictures coupled with a great story. I have lurked every now and then, but finally joined your community. The figures and storm trooper stuff is fun and all, but I am really inspired by your dedication to your site, as well as your advancing career. Most of all, I am moved by your desire to improve your life and the lives of those you touch.

I have recently run into as many walls as one can imagine both personally and professionally. It is only by the good grace of my parents that I am not homeless. I hope that in the coming months I can find my passion and determination so that I can tear down these walls that threaten to fall down on me.

Thanks for doing what you do. In time, I hope to meet you and possibly even work with you once my education and career are back in order.

Very good photo article again, this is definitely my favourite part of this page!
There are a lot of homeless people around here, but many of them will never make it big like Kanemoto-san, simply because many of them don't have the necessary skills and knowledge to creatively create something new. Working at a factory for 10-20 years then loosing everything is the end for many people, unfortunately.

Ummm...met that wall today, yesterday, well in the classes I have now, didn't learn what I needed to pass the class I have now and learned many new stuff with the old stuff that I should've learned. If I want to pass this class I would have to break it down, though my grade sucks I feel that I have learned a lot and I mean A LOT of stuff during these few weeks. I paid too much I give up now, the lesson I learned this time around has given me new hopes and hey, the fun stuff my major promises has just begun.

One thing I noticed about the homeless I came across in Japan was the lack of psychotic symptoms that quite a number of homeless here in Berkeley and San Francisco display. A few of the homeless I talked to near Berkeley (the non-nutty ones) said they were protesting the high rent (despite the rent control being quite favorable), I wonder if any Japanese homeless have similar esoteric reasons?

Always impressed with the way the LX3 can capture digital nightshots in low light conditions. I like taking artistic black and white photos, but haven't done so in awhile and never at night.

The few homeless I did see in Japan ages ago were very different than the ones we have here. They were relatively clean and mostly kept to themselves preserving a little self dignity in their unfortunate situation. Here they just follow you around, and hound you for money.

Lovely story that goes very well with the photowalk...makes us feel that you're next to us having a conversation while walking through Tokyo!

The story is really amazing. I salute anyone with the spirit and determination to overcome such daunting obstacles and come out on top.

Never say die and always persevere!

My life at times have been somewhat smooth up to the birth of my daughter when it got quite tough the first year. I almost broke up with my wife because of the stresses of a child at home as well as conflicts between spouse that were there even before my daughter was born.

I'm glad that despite the occasional fighting and cold wars, we managed to survive and my beautiful daughter is 15 months old!

Life is a challenge. Sometimes to get up each day is difficult when you lose your motivation and reason for existing.

I think your post is a powerful one that has inspired many as it has inspired me.

    Be well and prosper!

After seeing photos of the ladies in beautiful kimonos at the festival near the site, I wondered how much money Japanese women spend on each year.

Wow that story on Kanemoto-san is really inspirational. Now that I have some more free time due to summer vacation I'm going to use his story as inspiration to work harder.

O and Danny, on some of your pictures you put .8 and .4 seconds. Did u mean 1/8th and 1/4th seconds instead? Because, I dont think the Canon DSLRs do 4/5th and 2/5th second exposures, but I'm not exactly positive since I haven't messed with the interval between exposures on mine too much.

Your pictures are also amazing as usual. I think I am gonna get myself a Lumix LX3 when my next paycheck comes in. Was deciding between this and a Powershot G10. Have to say, the colours are brilliant on the Lumix LX3. Played with my friend's G10 and I thought it was good too, but when I saw your photos, LX3 is better. =P

Kanemoto-san's tale is a very insirping one. I hope it will make others realise that there really is a light at the end of the tunnel. Tales like these not only motivate me to work harder but also make me realise how blessed I am sometimes and that I shouldn't take so much for granted in life.

I also really like the green lighting effect you've used in some of the pictures. Though I did think it was the street lighting colour and not some effect you had used on the camera!
