I have had the girl-next-door living next to me. ^^
Also your usage of the word "Canteen" was interesting. To me a canteen is a 1 quart container I'd have attached to my pistol belt that is filled with water ^^; But as wikipedia shows your usage is more common to UK English than American. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canteen
Love the differences English has between countries ^^
Interesting teaser...almost looks like some thriller or possibly some dark superhero XD

Here in Malaysia we also use the word "Canteen" . Also Americans pronounce the word Erb instead of Herb .
What do Americans call "Canteen" . Also I'm a bit confused between "football" and " football" .
Americans call it football but in the UK they call it Rugby. The UK call it football but the Americans call it soccer .

Football is Football (The sport where you huddle, hike the ball, and go for a touchdown). Soccer is what we call the sport everyone else calls Football.

UK Rugby is called Rugby in the USA. Our football is different than Rugby.

In the US we call a canteen cafeteria as well, but it is an old term and no one uses it today. It was typically a term used for a military cafeteria.

dont forget football....aussie rules XD
in my opinion its all relative to where you are...
here in australia we call football...football, but it aint soccer/football, and it definetely aint rugby. Thats cos we have our own 'aussie rules' mayhem version. dont ask me to explain it, cos whenever i watch, i get lost very quickly...
However:
In the UK, the national game of football is what others would call soccer (us included).
In the US, the national game of football is what others would call gridiron, a relative to the game of rugby, but not the same.
and here its more trend towards saying 'cafeteria' rather then 'canteen'. Canteen brings up the image of somewhere you have to eat with no other option...like in the army, or perhaps NHK cos its size

We use cafeteria.
http://www.marvinryan.com
on a side note, in Italy and the planet Tatooine they call it Cantina. ^^;
but more imporantly the wikipedia on cantina also explains how canteen ended up with the meaning of a flask container.

Did they stop using the term canteen for cafeteria in the Army?
Otaku, US Army, Student (Political Science)

Yes, I've never heard of a cafeteria called a Canteen ever in the Army. Even my dad said back in the 1960s he never called or heard anyone call the chow hall a canteen. If it is used by anyone in the US it's a very small amount that do.

Oh wow, the storage area for props sure is messy, heh they need to sort it all out. Maybe it is already and it just looks all over the place. All the sets are amazing, from looking at it not as a TV show, they don't look like what they do on television.
The place really is like their own city, with a book store, pharmacy and wow that lunch area is huge! The international floor, rows and rows of people working away. This place looks somewhat more organized than at the workshops they have and storage.
One question, how was the lunch there?

I used to be one of his Youtube subscribers. He put up a video of himself talking in all these foreign accents. Of course it kinda sounded a little bit racist but that didnt bother me. I left a lighthearted comment to that effect, something like "Lol, borderline racist". Soon after i was booted from his subscribers list and banned from commenting on all his videos. I was like WTF!? I never thought someone in his position would stoop so low as to remove even the slightest hint of anything that didn't feed his ego. Maybe thats why all his comments are positive. Hey Danny, it's all about your white balance. It looks like you're shooting at around 3200K which indeed does give shots a bluish/greenish tone. I normally shoot in RAW and W/B to auto to overcome this since i can always re-correct the shot in software.
In #25801, it looks like white flourescent lighting in that area but your camera seems to be shooting at 'Tungsten'. Are you using Auto W/B or maybe some other selection?
CEO MIrai Inc
http://www.dannychoo.com/profile/eng/
I tried all settings and they still turned out green. Was wondering if it was special lighting.
NEET part-time - Technical Support Officer - Network security engineer

Well, i guess studios are desigined for filming not photography
Maybe just use a manual W/B function if you've got the option to (were u using the LX3?) - Shoot 'white' object (paper), set W/B to that image, etc...
That would definitely solve the issue but it is a pain setting it up properly
3d Computer Engraver
http://www.tediumonline.com/
Yes , its the white balance . The lumix if you shot with that which I suspect isn't the best at white balance, in general digi cameras have a hard time with white balancel. The camera has to look at the white balance and calculate the correct colour cast all in the click of a button, unless you pre set it. You said you fixed it Lightroom which means it can be fixed in camera but for a quick point and shoot that takes fiddling time. I agree with cyberchaos shoot in RAW
you have more control in post and never have to worry about white balance in camera.
I hope this helps.
Cheers

Actually, the lights vary depending on what is being filmed. Some are tungsten, some are sodium (Gymnasium lights), some are just fluorescent. Now, it's been almost 12 years since my Optics class, but IIRC, the green has something to do with the clash of light waves and the CCD unit. The chip tries to clean out the noise, and winds up greening everything. At least, I think that's how it works.

AWB tends to green indoor stuff, which is why it's best to treat everything indoor as in the shade except if you have special lighting.
Here's a page on it http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/whitebalance.htm
I found the shade setting on my 450D works surprisingly well, although when shooting figures I always make sure the lighting is via color corrected tubes.
For special lighting use White Balance correction via your WB Shift chart/menu if you have one. You'll have to experiment though. I've never had a situation yet where I needed it.

If the camera white balance isn't enough you need a Fluorescent Filter Lens for you LX3. The Filter Lens will block out the green light. This site here, http://www.camerafilters.com/pages/fl.aspx, has some basic info and a few sample pictures on the three different types of FL filters FL-W (Warm/White light Fluorescent), FL-D (Daylight Type Fluorescent)and FL-B (Daylight film using Warm/White Light Fluorescent, probably N/A for digital cameras).
Anyhow, I bought a PL, FL, UV (lens protector) kit for my Panasonic DMC-FZ28 and the FL does indeed work when I take a close up picture of a object directly under a Fluosecent desk lamp.
Math Teacher/Tutor
Sorry for the double but the comma got caught in the link above and will not work properly. The correct link is http://www.camerafilters.com/pages/fl.aspx
Math Teacher/Tutor
Thought I'll also take some pictures myself using my own camera and filters to illustrate the point. The camera is a Panasonic DMC-FZ28, a cheaper version of Danny LX3 but with 18 optical zoom, considered one of the best premium P&S mega zoomer. Both Gundam shot were taken using Aperture Priority mode so I could better insure both shots were taken under same settings ( F set to 4.5, ISO 100, Camera was perched on a few books and shot taken using 2 sec timed mode to ensure no camera movement).
Anyhow, the lens itself http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/rr53/gtsimmo/IMGA0001.jpg
Its was part of a cheap $20 USD kit I purchased off Amazon, not the best quality lens but it seems to work. Mainly purchased the kit for the UV filter to work as an all around lens filter
Without the filter, I placed the fluorescent lamp really close (1 foot away) to the Gundam Model to make the green really come out more. http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/rr53/gtsimmo/Withoutfilter.jpg
Now with the filter on

The lens is purple in color so if you use it when you shouldn't your pictures will come out purple hehe. Anyhow the filters are cheap anyhow, I'm sure you'll have an easy time finding one on Amazon Japan or on from a camera store while the clerk can provide some more expert advise on the subject.
I'm glad I was able to help ^.^

. Adding a filter also changes your exposure which can slow down your shutter speed. You lose the wonderful F2 of the LX3. I just bought the LX3 for the wife while I shoot with the Nikon D90 and the LX3 isn't the best at white balance, looks like the studio uses some different types of light temp and for me carrying around colour cast filters is not an option. I had a thought did you shoot with a flash on?? If so it wouldn't matter what white balance you set the camera will change it to Flash Temp . The way around that is colour filter on flash , more powerful flash or don't use flash. I looked back at some of your NHK shots and a few of them have a yellow/green cast showing different light temps. Danny shoot RAW more control of exposure and white balance. Great look in NHK , thanks for the insight.

Sadly I've never had the girl next door but then growing up the nearest house to mine was a mile and a half away. If a girl had been living there it wasn't exactly next door. I have a crackhead in the apartment above, does that count for anything.

I think the greenish cast from those lights is because the lights are Mercury Vapor or some sort of high intensity discharge lamps. They flicker really fast, unlike the constant intensity of an incandescent, so the white balance of the camera can't really figure out what is going on..
Animator
http://pandaxtor.blogspot.com
The lights could also be used when shooting green screen work, it casts the green light against a green screen and should remove any shadows. It makes it easier for keying out footage and composite after wards.

How could you not finish such an epic anime? Just look at that opening! epic! Definitely one of the top anime series due to it's really strong character driven story, solid visuals, and satisfying ending. Come on, how many anime series have a good satisfying ending that ties up most loose ends, AFTER an already outstanding story? Please tell me, as I'd want to see.

Hi Danny! There is many things interesting to me in this post:
- I never heard before Hinokio but as a scifi fan, I appreciate the trailer.
- The poster with the gorgeous Yuka-chan is about "shokuiku" (I know you know it :P). As a Japan-food lover, I was translating all about shokuiku and I want to adapt his policies to my region (Mexico and Latin America). If there is any person interested in this, visit (english) http://www.maff.go.jp/e/topics/pdf/shokuiku.pdf or my translation to spanish (still incomplete) http://www.bentomexico.com
- And about "Angels and Demons", I like it more than "The DaVinci Code" except for one thing (I didnt want to spoiler it now).
- And as an homage to your "Tokio Street Walks" I start a "Mexico City photo walks", please see it http://www.azteca7.com.mx
Excuse my english, I am not a native speaker (soy mas de hablar español, amigo!)
I appreciate many of your thoughts about life. Cheers!

This was one of the most interesting posts for me yet - aiming to be in film/TV myself, so seeing all these sets and getting a look "behind-the-scenes" is right up my alley. So far, it looks like I'll be staying in Toronto, but I've been seriously considering heading back to Hong Kong once I'm done my degree. Tokyo isn't all that far from my sights either.
Girl next door...funny thing, that. I had a crush on this girl back in elementary school in Hong Kong. Imagine my surprise when she *showed up at my door* one day with her mother. Turns out she was just the next apartment building over, a rarity considering we went to a semi-prestigious Catholic school that collected students from all over.
She was going on vacation, so I was asked to take notes and collect assignments. The fact that I was the top academic student at the time probably helped, too. She returned the favour later when I missed a month of class for family issues.
Unfortunately, that was as far as it ever got with her. ^^; Too much of a wimp at the time to even become friends with her.

Otaku ^^
I think the management in NHK wanted to make their facilities accessible to their employees and visitors & at the same time earn some business too. If you can access to the facilities nearby, you tend not to waste time traveling elsewhere to get stuffs you need.
"Angels and Demons" have not reach my shores yet. 15 May, I think. I will buy the novel and read it first before watching it. I have experience the same scenario with "The Da Vinci Code". The book is better that the film. A lot of good stuffs in the book are missing from the movie. What I feel is that the original contents are the best seller to which the movie tried to emulate to succeed.

DaVinci Code good movie, but it was very fast paced. I like the book. Angels & Demons was my first book from Dan Brown, the cover caught my eye and I really liked it so I brought it "hurhur". Its a good book, its Robert Langdon, a prequel to DaVinci if memory serves me right.
There a third installment in this series set within 12 hours with Langdon again. New book is called "The Lost Symbol", Can't wait, will get and read it.

I have to say this has been one of the most personally interesting posts on here! I'm fascinated with the whole self-contained world inside of NHK HQ. It's incredibly cool to see the prop rooms and the construction facilities! It'd be awesome to get lost in there....
My first job was at an amusement park, which is also a contained area with numerous in-house amenities. In the off hours I used to love wandering around the back areas, finding weird stuff like empty roller-coaster cars out in the woods and the dressing rooms for the walk-around cartoon characters. We also happened to call the employee lounge and dining area a "canteen", by the way.

So that's what it looks like in the NHK studio, not to mention its own cafeteria and pharmacy... nice.

Do you manually white balance your camera before you take photos Danny ? or did you use presets (daylight, tungsten etc.) on the cam!? sometimes it works to just take a pic of something white like a sheet of paper, fill the whole frame with it in the current lighting and set that as white but maybe the lighting needs those special white balance charts for their studiocams.
