You can probably find it pretty cheap on DVD. It came out in 1996. It's ahd 5 different editions of the DVD set. Make sure you get the "Perfect Sessions" version, it's been cleaned up a bit and has a lot of extras.

The outlet malls we have in the states are pretty varied as to how they are laid out and what stores can be found in them. Some locations are extremely large such as the one thats 40km from where I live that has three seperate area's that are divided by an expressway as well as a major thoroughfare and is anchored by a walmart lowes car dealer and several hotels plus a truck stop. Originally outlet malls were locations where national and regional chain stores could open a store front to sell scratch and dent items and return items or last season items but they grew in popularity and most of the stores are now selling current items. Sony used to have its own stores in these locations selling refurbished items and scratch and dent but they had to high a return rate on the items due to failure and have since pulled out.

Conventional malls sell pets and have pet services though not all do both or even one of these. Some malls have seasonal musicians come in and some will have them for what ever reason they choose while others will host a national or international musician that tends to be popular with young kids to teenagers. The mall of America has an amusement park in it and is the largest mall in the country, the mall of Georgia which is 75km from where I live has a working carousel for the kids to ride.

Love outlet malls? Birch Run, just up the road, has one of the biggest. 70+ stores over something like 8 acres. It got so big, they had to put it across the street to get it all in.

Good pictures, but I'm shocked that a dog costs that much in Japan! I managed to get a full-blood akita inu from a friend for free, but even if I had to pay for her, it would only cost around 400-450 dollars. Feeding her isn't too expensive either, she gets home made food or canned food, which costs around 1 dollar/can around here if you know where to buy it. Fortunately my dog hasn't been really sick so far, so I don't know how much an operation for a dog costs around here (an annual check-up costs about 20-25$).
In case of underwear, going in with the girl is a must, not just for sightseeing, but also to prevent not to spend all day at the mall.:)
Oh, and the girls singing in the cream shop are damn cute!:)

That ice cream looks yummy. Cookies and cream is my favourite~
The video of them singing 'Heigh ho heigh ho' is cute too. But I think I prefer the ice cream.

I'd spend AGES at that Zakka-type store though. I absolutely love kitchen gadgets and cute, colourful things like shelves and teapots and those umbrellas. (Which I would likely get about five of because COLOURS! and those clear ones are very cool in a country where the black fabric umbrella is just about the only type you can find and coloured ones are even cooler.)
And hearing your wife want to open a shop like that is awesome too. I think it'd be the best type of shop to own, selling all those fun things.

As to lingerie shopping... I like opinions. Opinions make sure you don't buy something that makes you look horrid. So I'd bring the guy in, even if he was frantically trying to hide.
(I suppose having someone to ask if it looks if it's a nice fit would be handy too.)

That mall looks exactly like a lot of the outdoor shopping malls in Southern California. A lot less dogs at the malls here though. Is Japan more dog friendly in public places perhaps?

Also the cost of a dog can be soooo much cheaper if people just adopt!! And you feel good by saving a doggie from eventually getting euthanized...

Prices of pets like dogs vary here, depending on the breed and if the dog has a pedigree but they don't go anywhere as high as those prices.
But indeed a pet like a dog will cost a certain sum, food, grooming, health care,...

Dogs! I absolutely adore dogs. I have a shihtzu back home and we treat her like family.

Doesn't cost too much to have a dog as a pet here. Bought my dog for around USD300 when she was around 1 month old. Though dog abuse is a frequent case here, which saddens me a lot.

That cold stone girl is definitely cute when she sing for you :D I don't think that in my local mall I will see this kind of service for the customer.

I did not know that owning your own pet can be that expensive and bring it to see a doctor can cause you a kidney or two. The upkeep for each month is not cheap also because I heard that they need to have some kind of injection for each month and checkups also.

I wonder where can I find a Zakka shop in my country I'm interested in buying those furniture because they just look gorgeous. I want use it to decorate my house someday in the future. Still below 18 can't really buy a house yet.

About the dog thing... I've had a dog for 16 years, he was very strong and never needed surgery. He just died of old age and/or maybe cancer. If he wouldve gotten sick as a young dog, we would probably have paid for surgery, but above a certain age it's just not worth it.

Also, our dog was free :) Mixed breed = the strongest kind of dog.

And the welsh corgi as I've been wanting one for a long time... not sure if I'll ever get one, because, yes, dogs are expensive. Especially pedigree dogs... and the vet bills are... insane. Sigh...

As for the bra question.. can't really answer never had a boyfriend so never really thought about it... but I'd say it depends... if I was shopping for a surprise then I wouldn't want him around, but if it was just a need a new one then it may be nice to get his opinion too, then sometimes you just want to go in and do your thing and get out...

That sound barrier reminds me of a story I heard at work...
Our company was doing some business with a Japanese company, and some representatives flew in to look at some of our product. Well it had snowed a lot before they got here; and there was so much snow on the interstate that when the plowed it, there were huge walls of snow-taller-than-the-cars the whole way from the airport to our company (about 45 miles).

So they came, they saw, and they left. Later that year, when the snow had melted, they came for another visit and were wondering where the sound barriers had gone.

I have a welsh corgi I adopted from a shelter. I paid $150 in fees for him. So far, only routine vet bills for annual checkups, shots and heartworm/tick prevention. Costs something like $100/year. Of course if he got sick I'd get hit with big bills. They do have pet health insurance here but I've never looked into it.

When I first saw the outside of Grandberry Mall, it felt kind of small and plain to be an outlet mall... the other pictures proved otherwise though. It actually looks better to have stores spread out with large spaces. The biggest mall that I know of and visit is Eaton Centre in downtown. Granted its quite large, everything feels stuffed together.

Just a random idea for time keeping, perhaps a small hand held projector like on some alarm clocks? that way, you can flash it on your hand or the pavement and read the time. Its already lit and fits the stormtrooper costume. Not sure if it will work during the day though...

Cold Stone is awesome. Every order includes a topping actually mixed into the ice cream as part of the price, though you can get more for an extra fee. I've yet to find another ice cream place that does that. Also, cheesecake ice cream is one of their standard flavors, and it's to die for, especially with Oreos as the mix-in.

How much a dog costs here depends heavily on where you go and what kind you get. If you go to the pound, you can get a rescue dog (possibly a mutt) for an adoption fee of about $30. On the other hand, if you go scouting around for a purebred, you can easily spend as much as $2000, sometimes more if the breed has a hard time reproducing, as is the case for Brussels Griffons. Also, females tend to go for more than males because their temperament is much easier to deal with--no territory marking, minimal dominance issues, etc.

Of course, if you wait around until the puppies are a few months old, the stores will sell them fore less because the cuteness factor drops enough to make them harder to sell. They're usually still young enough to be easily trained and spayed or neutered in time to prevent the territory issues that come with puberty, but since they're not itty bitty a lot of people will just pass them over. That's how my mom got Fizzy, our purebred Brussels Griffon, for $300 instead of the original price of $1500. (Well, that and he had kennel cough.)

We also got a rescue dog for about $45, a golden retriever/cocker spaniel/spitz mix. He's an adorable wimp. However, after we had him for a year, we found out his knees were deformed and because of it they kept dislocating. The two surgeries cost about $3200 in total, though my grandparents paid for half of it. It was totally worth it. Now we have a bionic golden retreater!

Cold Stone has some pretty good ice cream and the girls working there are pretty cute. The price is pretty decent compared to all the other places such as Ben&Jerry's, Haagen-Daz, BaskinRobins, Brusters, etc... Though I like gelato places better.

When saying going inside when accompanying for buying lingerie, do you mean inside the fitting room or the store?

On occasion I've accompanied friends who are girls around the mall to hang out. They usually stop at Victoria's Secret to shop around while I just wait outside. I've been inside a Victoria's Secret and it wasn't so bad...though I felt a bit awkward not knowing where to look that was appropriate. I tried not to stare as well (>OO)>

I think it's funny how amazingly popular stores like Cold Stone are when they first appear in Japan. Just a few years ago I heard you had to stand in line for hours for it and, in my opinion, the ice cream isn't even that great. :x

    I can't believe how expensive dogs are in Japan. @_@;
Does Japan have animal shelters where you can adopt abandoned animals for a smaller fee like in the United States?

That outlet mall looks pretty nice. I might have to go there next time I'm in Japan (if not just for a cute colored umbrella X3)

I just found that a British woman actually started a shelter in the Kansai region of Japan.
        http://www.arkbark.net/

It looks like the cost to adopt a cat is still a bit more expensive then it is here (I'm basing this on the cat I adopted- who cost me $90).

It looks like that animal shelter even has a Tokyo branch, so if I end up living there I could volunteer there. :D

So many comments to make, so little space.
-Outlet Malls. I live near a giant one (the Birch Run Outlet in, not surprisingly, Birch Run, Michigan) Lots of stores. But no dogs allowed. Sadly. I used to shop up there, especially at the Toy Liquidators (Great place for good deals on recent toys.) But being poor makes that hard now.
-Pets. Out of all of our dogs and cats, we've only gotten one from a store. The rest have been from places one of us passed on the way home, or were given to us because nobody else could take them. So far, we've only given away one. (Useless. But he went to a big-ass farm. And yes, that was his name, and he pretty much was. But the people who took him used him as a herding dog for cattle, and he lived for 13 years. So it worked out.)
-The Cold Stone girls. That was very cute. Thanks for that!
-Feminine underwear. Only one who asked me to go with her was Julie. As a kid, I was forced to go, though. That was fun....

I obviously own a dog (pictured as my avatar). ^^

The prices for dogs don't really seem that expensive. Pure bred dogs, especially the smaller breeds, can fetch anywhere from $500 - $1000 for common breeds, well over $2000 for exclusive designer ones (check out the prices for a Coton de Tulear for example). That's the going rates in Portland.

I have health insurance on my dog, and it covers a substantial portion of my pet's health bill. I bought it when he was 2 when I started to notice that those $50ish trips to vet were adding up. Cost me $360 / year but worth it for the peace of mind it brings.

Strangely, my wife and I went to Cold Stone this evening. No kawaii singing girls for us. It was two college aged guys singing the exact same song that was on your video. My wife liked it. :P

CHICKEN PHO!? WHAT!? I've never heard of that, ever. It's always been beef and beef innards, no chicken or pork or anything else. Well, I do bet it was delicious, makes me want to get some pho soon... Anyways, this was an interesting post to see how much different Japanese outlet malls are from American outlet malls. The outlet malls here are total rubbish and are usually regarded as so. They're just "trashy" I guess.
I don't like outlet malls, however other people do for the prices on stuff that's out of season, etc. My main problem is the sizes that are found in them. Did you find the right sizes at that outlet mall? Seeing that you bought ALL BLACK CLOTHES (YET AGAIN, as I am betting that the other articles of clothing are for your wifey, no?), you have found your right sizes. But seriously, why all black? :'( Why not try some blue jeans or a gray shirt, just not black? Just a little suggestion. :D
Your posts always make me want to live in Japan, but I'm so hesitant because of their strict, xenophobic "gaijin-rules" and the current world economy. You really do try to make Japan look as beautiful as it is, no? Well, keep up the good work Danny.

(Dang, it's been a while since I had time to comment...)

Hmm.. for some reason I thought the Japanese cold stone girls would sing a little better of a song than they do here in the US, but it seems like they're stock songs for all locations. A little disappointing, but I bet the ice cream is still good!

My opinion Danny, you can't go too far wrong with black clothing. It tends to go well with everything(every other thing I own is black with a skull somewhere on it). The only down side is they tend to show lint too easily. Coincidentally I've thought about switching to brown colors myself. Great article as always. :)

Why, I have no reason but I think it has something to do with the way the animals are treated or something like that. We are told the best place to buy a dog or cat is from the animal shelter because they take better care of them there.

Thanks Danny - had a look at the Grandberry website when we were last in Tokyo but it looked like a fairly soul-less place eg looks like a mall in the US. Much prefer the dirty little back streets of Tokyo to places like this - although wifey might disagree with me and your pics make it look like it's worth a shot.

The other outlet chain I found at the time was called Mitsui - http://www.31op.com/index2.html
