I <3 IKEA. One opened up here recently and it let me spend lots of money on bedroom furniture and figure display cases.

I'm used now to the Book Off shelves. There are still second hand shops that do it a different way though. Manga Souko comes to mind.
It's a shame that guy threw those PC88 games away instead selling them cheap through Yahoo! Auctions or taking them to his local second hand shop. If those were MSX games I wouldn't be commenting, I'd br crying!
I don't have an anti hay fever strategy as it looks like hay fever hasn't still got a strategy for dealing with me.
I'll have my ramen "hard as wires", with garlic, green onion, rather little oil, and a lot of secret spice. Thank you Mr Ichiran.

I admit that I've never eaten at Ikea before. I have however, had pickles in my hot dog. Not sweet pickles, but garlic ones. Surprisingly tasty.
I also had tempura and agedashi tofu this week. While I've had some good tempura here, alot of restaurants cake on the batter. Its like crunching on a cookie sometimes. You've been warned.
Hmm... haven't had Calpis in awhile. Must get. Unfortunately its about 900 Yen a bottle here.

Another good 'A Week in Tokyo' post to make me hungry. ^^
When I get a game I'll usually see if there is a used copy in decent shape first, I would prefer to have the original case and manual but depending on the game I might not care much if the artwork isn't that nice. What I really hate is when places put a dozen stickers on the game case that I have to remove later on.
I noticed that the Book-Off's that I've been to in California seem to have a strange layout as well, so I guess it's a common thing in all the stores.
Still need to head out to Ikea sometime soon and pick up a decent display cabniet, but there isn't one nearby so it's always quite a drive so I keep putting it off. I don't want to order it online since I would assume shipping woul be rather expensive.
Their food is also really good for being as cheap as it is.

First time I tried Calpis Water it was pretty refreshing, so I seldom get some if I have some craving for it.
As for food at Ikea, i don't know if there are any available in Japanese Ikea's, but at their upstairs restaurant (There are usually two at where I live, one in the middle of the showroom and one at the exit) have some really good swedish meatballs, and also some very good soft cream for a buck too.
Had some tempura today as well, from some all-you-can-eat place (which of course leads to questionable taste). But there are rarely any decent authentic japanese cuisines around my area.

I think it would be against the laws of the universe for a second hand book shop to be EASY to find things in... I know there's one in town (not manga though) that is basically ceiling height shelves with just enough space for two people to squeeze past each other inside. Find some awesome stuff in there though.
Got nuthin' for hayfever though. Garlic tablets? Or just garlic filled food in general?

My neighborhood is infested with those same brown rabbits. I see so many of them running around people's yards, but every time I try to approach one, it'd take off running. I'm pretty surprised that the one in the picture isn't so shy.

We drink Nescafe Gold Blend, too! ^__^ Do you have the new Gold Blend Dark Roast over there? Very nice desu.
Always buy my games first hand. In fact, I can't stand second hand things, I have a phobia about other people's germs, unless it's very rare and there's no other way of getting it. I hardly get any games nowadays anyway. Haven't played any Bio Hazard / Resident Evil since Code Veronica on the Dreamcast.
My current manga reading list: Bakuman, AirGear, GANTZ, Until Death Do Us Part, Manhole (just finished), Historie, To Love-Ru, The Ravages of Time, etc. etc.
I like Calpis water, too, but too expensive to drink it regularly here (you know we call it Calpico here right? Imported from Indonesia I think).
**Insert YouTube video of "Gates of Thunder" from PC Engine DUO (TurboGrafx-16) here.** Loved that awesome OST desu.
IKEA is also crazy busy and popular here on weekends. Parking and loading bays are ridonkiculous! I have a secret confession for their meatballs at IKEA.
Out of all the netbooks out so far, the Lenovo S10 is by far my favourite. The design might be a bit of a throw back but it's the sturdiest and most nice looking netbook out there in my opinion. Unfortunately, Ethernet card doesn't work when you try to hackintosh it. Check out this handy chart: http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/12/17/osx-netbook-compatib.html
The best compatibility is apparently the Dell Mini 9 and I've heard good things about the Mini 10 but it doesn't have 2GB RAM option at launch.
Looking forward to surfing dc.com on my iphone in the future!!
CEO MIrai Inc
http://www.dannychoo.com/profile/eng/
The Mini 9 ca go up to 2GB right?
Illustrator & Designer
http://www.knight-edge.com/
Yes, but you have to install / replace the 2GB yourself much like the Lenovo S10.
Here's a useful tut link for anyone who wants to upgrade their Dell Mini 9: http://www.ubuntumini.com/2008/11/upgrading-your-mini-9s-ram-guide.html
And I've just read up that the Dell Mini 10 has the 1GB memory "fixed" to the motherboard like the Macbook Air. So no upgrade for that model for now.
The Asus EeePC 1000HE has the best battery life but it's too bulky looking. The 1002HA model sounds and looks really nice however, with it's grey brushed aluminium finish. Will wait to see if anyone has hackintosh it.

Hay fever, I usually try to eat things and use honey as a sweetener before I get the heavy symptoms. It is my understanding that honey contains pollen that the bees carry around and that a relatively low dose of it gets your body ready for the hay season.

As for Projector, you need to factor in the amount of ANSI Lumens, & resolution.
The higher the ANSI Lumens, the higher the contrast (Daylight view), the bigger the resolution, the more expensive it cost.
Last but not least, the technology on the projector, DLP or LCOS.
Most common are DLP or 3 DLP, latest is LCOS.

700 yen for coffee refill huh? I heard from my brother's Japanese friend that coffee in Japan was really expensive but that doesn't seem too bad. Also, heres an idea for that LED light. Anyway, currently seem to have a fad of handwashes in the house which make your hands smell of exotic fruits. Quite distracting when I scratch my nose or face.
Been meaning to ask, at your desk space, do you have any aches and pains from using certain things? Or have you optimised the workspace ergonomics to alleviate RSI and such? It could help with improving your back troubles, (hope the exercises have been helping). More recommendations on your back troubles would be to wear your Storm trooper braces more often instead of a belt. Proven to help posture and move stress away from areas in your back.
Recommend Nodame Cantabile if you can pick it up at the store, and instead of a projector I'd splash out on a most awesome Interactive White board. We had them in virtually every room in highschool, just make sure you keep them well positioned and configured, unless you end up trying to write on with the special pens and the writing shows up half a foot away.
Like so, http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/202750810/Electronic_Interactive_Whiteboard.html

Will be going to IKEA soon myself, time to stock up on furnitures for the new room, if its like my local ikea, really do check out the swedish produce, (especially the sweets) behind the tills. Most awesome indeed, some very addictive stuff.
For allergies and illness, I can fend most off with healthy doses of spice, and lots of onions, raw or only just cooked if possible. Indian curry (lots of chilli), chinese curry with big pieces of onion, and green curry usually does the trick. Although you pay the price by having breath smelling of onion and garlic wherever you go, so make sure to stock breath mints and brush teeth, gums, and tongue more regularly. The chilli will also help speed up your metabolism and keep a few extra pounds off.
All I can think of for now!

Ikea Japan has the 100 yen/1 dollar hot dogs too? Never knew it was an international sort of thing. :) And...yeah, their displays are always arranged so that you have to walk through everything. I remember when I was a kid and hated walking; I always just sat at the entrance and waited for my parents.
Oh, and I second kokost's suggestion above! No idea how you'd pull it off, but a glowing D logo would be amazing!
Student
http://kokost.deviantart.com/
I've given some thought about it and I don't think it will be too hard to pull off. The only drawback is that the shoulder piece might stick out slightly if that specific LED light was used. Seems a bit thick... My idea would be to obtain a spare shoulder piece and cut out the diamond shape. Fill it in with a flexible and opaque material. Have it white so that you can cover where the "d" is and spray a thin coat of orange paint. Remove the tape, replace the shoulder piece with the light behind it, turn on and dance away! It should add a nice touch at night. Thats my idea anyway... I don't know of any good opaque materials to use nor do I know much about paint ><

Thanks for your dedication focus and humor in the living in/week in japan series, after the guest posting in BBoing, signed up for email notifications and enjoy the multiple times a week updates and distractions that viewing A Week In provides.
WITokyo and Living in Japan are why I visit, Anime/dolls are not really of interest, fascinating view of the culture there but not a big draw.
Very much like your photos and different viewpoints, and equally the short focused and insightful description or story on each picture. Tried to do the same in photo travelogue myself for friends in across US and wwide travel but never get the time for something more regular or insightful.
You asked for site updates - simplistically for me viewing the week in /life in sections are my main focus/portal entry. Viewing the photo stream is what I am after but its a bit unwieldy. Wide screen monitor running at 1920x1200, with IE or FFox not in full screen, page down scrolling a page at a time never quite has each new photo in place in full in the middle of the browser screen, so they get cut off partly. Page down again and I can end up almost skipping 2 photos. Maybe a NextPhoto button or link but then that would mandate mousing clicking each time. Ideally, maybe tweak so that a simple page down, regardless of screen resolution can always place the Next Photo in the Stream at the top of the refreshed/scrolled page?

As far as games new or used, it really depends on the game. If it's something I'm really looking forward to I'll go out of my way to get a new copy of the Collector's Edition. Otherwise for something I just want to check out or otherwise don't have any particular attachment for I've got no problem buying used as long as the case and manual are intact. Nothing irritates me more than having to buy a game without a case and manual.(They get a higher resell value if they include the case and manual!) :)

So the commercial has at least one pan shot in it. . . not that that tells me much!
I would actually recommend NOT getting a projector. My school uses a good couple different brands in different departments. They're always breaking in some way or another, virtually all models seem to have crap resolution and washed out color, and the bulbs cost a fortune. Oh, and the screens for them are expensive too. You'd probably be better off getting one of those gizmos that tap your computer into your TV, especially since you have that lovely plasma already.
Photographer, journalist
http://www.kaiju.com
I would say about half of your ideas about projectors are right. The color is always washed out, at least to some extent. The bulbs do cost a ton. The screens can be quite expensive. Good projectors can have amazing resolution, which can be the best way to get a really big picture. If you don't want to get a screen, they make a paint, and you can set up a whole wall as your projector service.

Only been to one....twice.... 2nd time I wasn't very well while I was there.... threw up while I was actually there lol... in a plastic trash can we were buying... lucky it wasn't mesh really... And lucky the label to be scanned was on the bottom of the trash can.
I love the food there too. Tis suprisingly yummy. The meatballs are yummy... and its all so cheap! Daisuki! The lingenberry(?) jelly is yummy too. Couldn't have any of this on my 2nd trip because I was still ill....*sulk*

Speaking of food..I was at a japanese restaurant today(fortunetly), and ordered a combo of everything(a bit of everything)-sallad, some chicken, rice with soy souse, a cup of a soup tea, and fruit, and also brokoli in eggs and vegatables.(the whole plate looked small) To be honest I couldn't finish a half of it, because I'd feel full so quickly. I truly enjoyed it. Now I understand why japanese have so little of food (in small cups) - that's because the food is truly delicious and you don't have to pack yourself with burgers or fries, and it's healthier, contains less sugar and proteine.(?)

Congrats on the CM work, your photo's do speak for themselves and your natural ability to catch a good moment with the camera.
Ikea where I used to live served food on the second floor and had more traditional fare from its home country at the time of its opening. When my wife and I took our daughter on our first trip we all had Swedish meatballs and some other dish but cant remember as it was 4 years ago. It didn't matter what day of the week or time it was the store was always packed and on opening day traffic was backed up for miles around with people wanting to get all the specials.
Why buy a projector when you can make your own with help from http://lumenlab.com/ , I've been working on one on and off for a while now and the site has a ton of great info and products. With the fact that you can find the electronics sitting at the curb side where you live so easily I think the greatest expense you would have would be for the wood to make the enclosure.

<i>The prices displayed here below the games is the price that Book Off will buy them from you - games that just came out will usually be purchased at a high price. I'm personally not fussed about packaging and get my games secondhand - sell them back after. Do you prefer spanking new or go for secondhand?</i>
It's against my personal religion to buy console video games brand spankin' new. Why pay $50-60 for a piece of software that you can get two months from now for half that price?

For hay fever you can try almost anything that works for your immune system. For my bro raw aloe vera, ginkgo and a small quantity of pure honey and royal jelly worked . Of course it is best to start eating all these things before the hay season starts, so your body can get ready for it. Also don't forget to check if you are allergic to any of these things!

As for Hayfever help. What you need to do is find a source of locally produced honey, that uses bees from your area, or as close as you can find, and take a spoonfull everyday.
This will get your body used to the pollen, but this is not a cure, it is supposed to help.
I also used 'eyebright' for helping my eyes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euphrasia

I've noticed that in Japan food is only cheap if you stick to the Asian side of
things.
If I went Freshness burger (which is ridiculously good) you'd spend 800 Yen
easily on 1 burger whilst that could be a huge bowl of Tonkatsu ramen or a huge
bowl of Gyuudon.
But yeah; if your touristing in Japan then you hardly wanna stick your mouth
full of Western stuff anyway.
And oh man it seems like they have cheap hotdogs at every Ikea !
Here in Holland too, you can get one for 75 cents, 2 with a *huge* softdrink for 1,75- its nuts :-)
But man, a shame to see such classics just being chucked out on the streets !
Is it taboo to pick up somebody's "Trash" ?
I know there are alot of people picking up piles of manga and selling them
infront of JR stations for dirt cheap (or take them to a 2nd hand shop) does
that sort of thing also happen to these piles of greatnesses ?
My favorite retrogame, dunno .. Axelay sure is up there in my list tough.
The super nintendo had alot of great classics and I still happily own the console, I think my favorite would have to be Cybernator, known in Japan as Assault Suits Valken which is sort of a sequel to "Target Earth" (or Assault Suits Leynos) from the Saturn.
It's a 2D mecha combat game, lovely details and the storyline is pretty cool.
The spiritual successor to Cybernator/Valken is "Metal Warriors"
Which takes the same combat but expands it, the graphics are a bit less gritty but still good and you can move outside of your cockpit s a tiny pilot , jacking other mechs !
And despite having two player action I still find myself going back to Cybernator/Valken for the style of it.

As always, love the fuud pics. Everything always looks so good. Except for that wimpy hot dog. It's long, but thin and limp. I think the Costco dogs are a better value.
I sure wish we had IKEA here though. Furniture is expensive and there are no cheap alternatives around.
Have to agree with the others in that you should go with the Dell Mini 9. I know you are adverse to buying Dell (aren't we all?) but it is the easiest to install OSX and have everything up and running. I don't think the build quality is all that bad either.
