Now that's what I call a camera stand. Very nice!
Sadly, I just use my D40 and my shaky hands. I should at least get a tripod...

I like that stand, its size and construction make it more stable than your typical tripod and the caster wheels make for easy relocation. I don't think it was originally a camera stand though given its design and construction and the late 60's early 70's enamel paint style which was typical for most schoolastic grade equipment. I'd venture that it was a stage lighting stand used in theatrical settings but I haven't been able to find anything using google so it looks to have been out of production for some time.

I wonder if he bought a second hand camera stand... I know, I should go take a look at his post. I have never thought of buying one.
Right now I use a tripod only. I have a few lights and some backdrops. It still experimental for me so I don't have a lot invested in my setup. As my skills improve I will get more equipment. Probably my next investment will be a dry cabinet.
I see FooBarBaz-san has a couple of nice dry cabinets. Then again FooBarBaz-san turns out a lot of great figure reviews. The studio stand makes it a lot simpler during a shoot.

Great photos and all but isn't a 30kg stand just a little too much? I mean thats just a little more than half my weight... Having a sturdy stand is important and same goes for the camera, lens and setup but doesn't it all come down to how everything is put to use? Skills and experience still play a role. For me, I relied on a Canon Rebel XTi with the stock 18-55mm lens until my brother picked up a 17-50mm Tamron lens and usually depend on my steady hands for most shots. I really wish I had more/better light sources and some white and coloured backdrops.

It is all about skill. All the equipment in the world will not make for better photos. When I was younger and worked for a studio photographer he told me equipment becomes a roadblock. Equipment inhibits and limits a experienced photographer. Interesting since most weekend photographers think more equipment makes for good photography. I don't mean any offense to anyone by saying that. Please don't think I'm being pompous.
I had a chance to use one of these stands. What it does for a studio photographer is make set up a lot easier. I usually see table stand on monsters like this one. It's nice having a laptop right there as one shoots.

I am so far limited to what I can find in wallpaper sections of a store or just plain

If I'm not mistaken, in the 3rd photo it looks like the backgrounds were printed out on poster paper (you can see a white border around the color gradient paper). That's a pretty good idea, design your own backgrounds in Photoshop and print them out!

Awesome Camera Stand... That's a really PRO Figure photographer gadgets
and since it weighs 30kg, maybe it could be used as a bench-press bar too :D
As for me, I took picture of my GUNPLA with a tripod, big carton papers for background, my table lamp for lighting and I used white plastic bags as a diffuser and sometimes I used colored plastic bags as both diffuser and filter... and to keep the background still sometimes I used my holy Sobotta Atlas of Anatomy or Sherwood's Human Physiology.. multifunctional books, those two :D
The results aren't as good as any Pro photographers since I'm a beginner and lacking the skills, but quite decent enough for me...

True, his photos are more of a product shoot, the subject matter is entirely of the figure itself, not fancy backgrounds, props, or dioramas.
His lighting is very even, clean... but flat looking. Which isn't a bad thing, if you're showcasing a figure and its details.

I'd LUV to have that stand. Would make it so easy to change camera angles.
Right now I have a Canon 20D with 50mm macro lens, a tripod and one of those adjustable office tables which lets me raise or lower the height of the figure.
Other than the camera and tripod, my lights and other supplies are either home-brew or second-hand so the expense has been pretty low.
Much inspiration provided by HappySoda, FooBarBaz (and lately littlenymphet).. all excellent.

Okay if you have access to such equipment. I use a tripod and two desk lamps with blue daylight bulbs, with the models on a table with a grey cloth backdrop - the results are warmer and have better modelling than say studio flash. The camera can be either digital slr or film slr.

Danny, or anybody who have knowledge about this photography stuff..
That blue thing they always use as background... is it a normal blue colored paper or is it something special for photography use only....
On the above photos, the Nendroid Excelica use blue background and the Tamaki use pink background
I remember taking my passport photo in the shop those days and they have this just a simple blue colored cloth as the background.... nothing fancy as I thought...
Anyway I was dreaming to set up such a nice and simple background when I do photo session for my figma, gundam etc. at home... so I hope any of you can give me some idea on this.
Thanks

Blue thing background? In Foobarbaz' pictures? That's probably from another one of his expensive equipment. It's a printer. He prints out his background on large format paper, possibly A3-size or larger.
Noticed one of his setup pictures, with the softbox lighting? See the background paper? It has a white border/margin around it, a good sign that it's printed. He probably photoshops his backgrounds so he has access to an unlimited variety of backgrounds/backdrops.
A white, black, or colored posterboard would do fine as a simple background. I'm currently using a white and black posterboards for my photos. Check my flickr account. Due to my lighting, you can turn a white posterboard into light gray background, which isn't a bad thing, I guess. Colored cloth is fine too, if you can find some way of holding it up. I just prop my posterboards against a wall for infinity sweep effect.
