    Actually, the name change was a marketing strategy...since the manga was set in Vietnam, and U.S. audiences would be familiar with the movie, "Apocalypse Now," the name change was to grab a wider share of the market. You can look at a title like "Apocalypse Meow" and instantly guess the subject matter.

I thought "Oh Damn! Cat Shit One is being animated!" and I was really happy... But it's based in Iraq/Afghan/Middle East? It made sense to use bunny v. Siamese Cats for the VIetnam war... Think camels are pushing it a bit far....

  Don't remember very well, but there was a nationality represented by cats too... but since the movie isn't exactly like the manga (manga was about vietnam), dunno how they will make the links...

I'm not too fond of shows about animal but this is like CounterStrike x MetalGearSolid x nuigurumi doing some terrorist vs counter-terrorist war on de_dust with amazingly superb animation quality. I want to watch it. It does have a very interesting concept.

But I cannot avoid being worried about the growing amount of 3D animation movies lately. I mean, if we disregard The Simpsons' movie, when was the last time we saw a 2D animation in the West? It seems to me that Hollywood forgot the appeal of 2D animation...

I do know this case does not apply to Japan, I am just saying that I'm kind of disappointed with the 3D empire over movie theathers lately.

  The manga starts out with the recon team in Vietnam. Their team name is "Cat Shit One." The anime is based off of the sequel manga, "Cat Shit One '80," which takes place during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
  
  The Japanese Wiki link that Danny posted above breaks down which animals represent which groups (in the original manga, the cats were the Vietnamese).

Its based off a three parter comic called Apocalypse Meow - a tale of the Vietnam War. In the comic Americans are rabbits, Cats are Viets, Panda are Chinese, Kangaroos are Aussies, Gerbils are English, and ... Dogs are ... something.
