It's not that hard. Red is stop or close window. Amber (or yellow) is warning, or hiding (the window will hide in the dock). Green is go, which will make the window really big.

This isn't a tricky part of using OSX. In fact I can't really tell any tricky parts in the OS itself. Do tell me if you find one XD

Whoa Danny i did not know The Straits Times published such a poo-crap article about you. I did not read the article but i hope that does not deter you from coming to Singapore again. As a Singaporean myself i am quite ashamed of my own country's main newspaper. Anyway we cannot always believe what is published in the newspaper anyway, there is more to the newpaper's content then just pure "raw" news, if you know what i mean. Anyway i am sorry it caused you some unneccessary brow frowning, and come back to Singapore soon. We will always welcome you :)

Haaa, I been reflecting a lot on life lately too about the time my Grandpa past away last month. Got into a big depression about death and getting older (27), while I haven't done anything with myself or really socialized. I think a lot of this also stemmed from a few months of unemployment.

Still kinda mopey, but I have a lot of things I am working on and some goals that I have set and am pushing myself hard for. This would be things like going to an anime club to make friends and socialize, as well as my decision to take a new whack at college and make something of myself. My end goal is to get a bachelors in linguistics with japanese and english, hoping that will make me a perfect shoe in for Jet and English Teaching. Hopefully I will also pick up other skills along the way in case teaching sucks =p. (but i like the idea of it, at least for high school/Uni. Gives me some baseball teams to cheer for =D )

But yea, I to had been anti mac for a long time, mostly because of video game support =(
But it seems it's not much of a problem anymore with most pc games ported onto consoles, which I kind of like more, since I don't have to worry about upgrading hardware to play it! Also I think theres a number of mmo's that have mac support too ( well not like I care, I quit MMO's as those were part of the problems holding me back from life). At least WoW can be played on Mac.

My only issue with Mac's now, is that they are freaking expensive, and it's hard to buy expensive things on unemployment. I am the ultra budget shopper guy.

And onto the issues of magazines. I love magazines. Always great reading material for things like lobbies as you mentioned, and most importantly the "Man's throne room"

Ahh thanks, I wasn't really close with him though, and I have dealt with the deaths of friends and other family before. But this definitely did help me get that new perspective. A reminder that mortality is there and that there is soooo much more in life to enjoy than just World of Warcraft or whatever the MMO of the month is.

I read an article about price of macs. They made a comparison between different brands of computers and made benchmarks to compare performance vs price. It turned out that mac (we are talking about just the computers here) is actually in the lower end of the middle pricerange when you look at performance. The expensive feeling comes from the fact that Apple isn't making a low performance budget computer, but it's quality hardware. Quality hardware from other brands isn't cheap either.

Seconded! You can buy a PC for cheaper, but dont expect it to last that long.

A close friend of mine bought an ultra budget pc, decent specs, but really cheap parts. Over the past year, he has had to return just about ever part imaginable. Everything from mobo to hdd to psu has died, and needed replacement.

I bought a PC with high quality parts, cost me about the same as an IMac, and I havent had any hardware failure or data corruption in over a year.

Though, MS OS are getting stupidly expensive these days!

      Unemployed bummer

sorry to hear about the state of matters you're in. as the Chinese like to say, "there's always a mountain higher than this one you see in front of you" and it kinda can be applied here. i'm unemployed, about to propose and job prospects in the banking line aren't great where i stand but still, i'm happy to be alive, having a loving family and gf and able to visit DC.com everything. that's gotta count for something.

so chin up soulfringe, we're both bummers but it doesn't mean we'll stay that way forever by choice. interesting goal regarding JET actually. i was of the opinion that i'm probably too far beyond it because of age as well as the desire to settle down into a career and a family soon but you go for it mate!

as for mac.... well, definitely interested to try it but cost is very prohibitive. coming from an engineering background mindset, i don't see the need to spend so much when i can achieve the same with less. but still, would give it a go some day when i have too much $$$ on hand without someplace to spend. (not sure when's that gonna be)

btw Danny-san, disappointing to hear about such a biased article published by a Singapore paper. did you attempt to rebuke them by writing a response to correct their points of interpretation? you really should because they're putting your image across wrongly.

Straits Time, particularly, has been rather crap of late because their editors/publishers are mud-slinging with a rival publisher so i'm none too surprised in the drop of their editorial comment but such a badly-worded article makes me puke my guts. GRRRR!!!

I'm sorry to hear how your situation in life is right now. It reminds me of myself when my grandma died. She was perfectly healthy but got ill and died 3 months later. This was the first person I knew who died so even though I was 20 at the time, it took me by surprise what it was like. I didn't feel like doing anything so I stopped showing up at uni and just sad in front of the computer all day. My mom didn't want that so she wanted me to see a counselor or priest and talk about death so I could move on. Somehow I thought that was not right to me so I didn't do anything. Then she just wanted me to go see people or at least go outside so she more or less forced me to go visit the local vintage railroad. I learned that it was actually possible to try my luck as a fireman (I wrote about this a few days ago in the left/right hand thing) and somehow it didn't really matter that I couldn't handle the heat. I experienced something I was really good at and I had talked to "real men" so the depression was all over. I started at uni again and started to get higher grades than ever before (like getting max grade in math). This year is a valid candidate for being the most important year in my life. It's likely that no future years will have such an influence on the rest of my life.

I would like to say that just copying this concept to you would make life a whole lot easier for you. However I'm pretty sure it's not that simple. I would really like to give you some advice but I feel like I can't do that without knowing you personally, which sadly, I don't :(

I do know one thing. Just sitting and waiting for something to happen is no good because then nothing will happen and you will stay depressed forever. I think you will need to figure out some way of moving on. Do something you want to do. Maybe you don't know what you want to do, but try to figure it out. I don't think joining anime clubs or other otaku related activites are the right for you right now. I think you need to get something real to do. Get a nice job (easier said than done, I know) or do volenteer work. I think the important thing is that you have to have something to do and that it actually matters what you do. I think that's the best advice I can give you without knowing you.

Nice article. I wish I knew how to read enough Japanese to understand the content. .. I'm getting there. hehe.

I have a subscription to a technology magazine, WIRED. While the contents are mostly online, magazines are handy at other times: eating, on transportation, internet died.

I'm just wondering how much are these kinds of magazines in Japan? Since I'm in Canada, my subscription was marked-up 4x ($10 vs $40) compared to the price for American subscribers.

Due to the more competitive nature of newspapers today (who reads them anymore?), more reporters are taking the easy road and writing sensationalist poo.

Although I have a mac myself, I haven't actually used it in my line of work. Although CF is used on both Windows and Linux, its more Linux focused from the projects I have seen so far. Also a lot of tools I use in Windows aren't available for Mac, or I haven't found them yet, so for the time being my mac remains my music and web browsing machine at work.

Very awesome how you got featured in Mac Fan magazine, what else is coming up?

Actually Parallels used to be faster and more compatiple than VMWare, but then VMWare added 3D and stuff. Now Parallels released a new version containing DirectX 9 support so now I don't know which one is best. I can only recommend a free trial of both and test your favorite software if you want windows on Apple hardware. Bootcamp (dualboot) is easy to set up and use too and it just works 100% (full 3D support and so on).

Boot camp is awesome. I never encountered driver problems when I used the drivers provided from the boot camp installer. I always encountered something bad with windows drivers on all other systems, but not with bootcamp :)

Now I'm going to crush a popular myth and tell that it's actually possible to get games for OSX. The unix core makes it fairly simple to port linux games to OSX (I know, I tried with good results) which means access to a lot of open source games. It's not the ones in the stores, but still good ones and they are legally free.

Also Apple made a piece of software called Cider. Basically it takes an application compiled for windows and and fools it to think it's running on windows while it's actually running on OSX (this only works on intel processors). If you see a game that only works on intel OSX, then this is likely the reason. End users will not see this but game companies started to use this since they can make windows games work on mac in no time. Sadly they haven't made as many games available for mac as expected but that might chance. :)

Also virtulization and boot camp will always be valid gaming solutions.

I've read the article on the Straits times (it was on the Urban section) and i certainly felt that they were putting their own words and feelings in danny's mouth.

This is an example of what happens when they get a writer who hasn't done his homework to write an article, as well as an Editor who is clumsy/ inexperienced enough to overlook the fact that private details were published.

Though im neither an advocate nor hater of the Singaporean news industry, this was definitely a slip up and i hope the DC community can understand that and not generalize about the Singaporean media industry. I also hope Danny doesnt end up hating Singapore and decides never to come back here again D:

And out of all day to miss a newspaper, i have to choose today... How bad is that article?? And i used to think that Strait Times is the most reliable in Singapore... how disappointing.

It's the paper for today (November 29th), right? Of course i stand on Danny's side, but i just curious on how far did they go with their article.. My father was once victim of defamation by a newspaper too... and not only in 1 article, it was for 2-3 months!! Not by all paper (means my dad is innocent), just that one stinking paper... their reason, they just want my dad to inject them with money to shut them up... They had the gall to actually come to my dad and ask that on his face, which of course my dad replied by kicking them out of his office... So yeah, Danny, i feel for you...

Should we file a complaint? not to Strait Times of course... they'll just ignore us, We send a mail to another Singaporean Newspaper, explaining the situation and what Strait Times had done... Competitor newspaper would usually jump at the chance to flame others in the same business. Any Singaporean would like to give a hand on writing these mails?? If we write lot enough, i think it would be noticed..

The article it appeared a few days ago. It certainly wasnt as bad as the defamation your father recieved (sorry to hear how they can be so ruthless), but it certainly seemed to, as danny said, insinuate many things that weren't true or wasnt said from danny himself.

In Poland Macs are way overpriced compared to USA or Japan, so the best way to get them cheaper is to import them and even then they are a "bit" too expensive. I heard from a Polish guy I once met online that mac games are really hard to find in Poland. The reason should be that if you take a game like say a game from Blizzard. They are made as hybrid CDs (works on both windows and OSX). The Polish translators translates the windows part and then they make CDs with the translation. However the Polish CDs will NOT contain the mac part, not even an untranslated one. Surely this will affect the usage of macs in Poland.

Can you confirm what this guy told me?

He is probably right, vast I mean vast majority of gamers (if not any) are PC owners so translating hybrid games doesn't pay off, cause only tiny fraction of buyers will use Mac version. What is even worse, as far as I know, only one company - Cenega sells games for Mac (mostly crappy Sims with addons + couple of strategy games) and these are original (NOT translated) English versions. So if you are a Mac user in Poland, and you want to play games, you are in the wrong country...

I'd read about that article in the Straits Times (thanks to the person who sent it over to me at 2AM yesterday). He ended up having what would be worth like ¥160 to pay for food for the rest of the month and it was like the 15th or something. I used to hate Macs at one point as well. I had a hand-me-down from a relative and it broke 2 weeks right after I started using it. It was very depressing to start up your computer only to see the sad Apple computer face on the screen.

I vowed myself never to touch a Mac again until I went to college and realized that I was required to learn the way of Macs once I started getting into my majors. Luckily, once I got out of junior college 2 years ago, I was treated to a 1st gen MacBook Pro. Still a happy user, too! It's okay, though. I love Macs and PCs equally, so it's all good! I use PCs for gaming needs, and Macs for the rest.

    As for magazines, I really ought to subscribe to some computer magazines. I've been meaning to, but lately, all I've been subscribing to are video gaming magazines ^^;

I think there are magazines for just about anything. I mean here there is a monthly magazine for regular train passengers. It's kind of a bit of a joke though because the target group have nothing in common besides using the train to go to work every day. It does tell about planned trackworks and stuff like that, but the rest is garbage :P

now onto that fiasco over the strait times magazine, i will just like to point out that article, if it was an article to begin with appeared on The Urban, one of those supplement reads the strait times throw in for ppl on the move. The Urban is a weekly add-on which focuses on fashion and demeanour. That would explain the emphasis on danny having had experience with shoe designing and stuff like that.

Now, having been an avid reader of digital life, another one of those supplementary reads, I can tell you that they are to be taken with a pitch of salt. News are generally outdated, biased towards domestic issues. Unfortunately, this is just another example of the things our dear newspaper gets away with since it is effectively the only mainstream english newspaper. And trust me, the rest are the real junk. (yes i am looking at you The New Paper!).

Sounds awesome, Danny - lots of nice pictures in that Mac Fan article. ^^; I'd read it on my own, but I get the feeling they're not using elementary-level kanji and I'd have to devote quite some time to the endeavour. :P As for Strait Times...libel and twisting your words around is one thing, but to bring your personal life into it...that's going beyond unprofessionalism.

    Anyway, media coverage of you seems to be growing so quickly! One thing leads to another and snowballs, I suppose. :) Thinking about it, you're basically an ideal subject for the MacFan article. A creative person with unique interests who used to swear by Windows but now has Macs all over the house, coupled with a success story and eyecatching visuals - stormtrooper armour + figures? If that doesn't get your notice nothing will. ^^;

...Wish I'd thought of this BEFORE I guessed wrong and got disqualified in the Soniko giveaway though. XD

I'm sorry if my question's not exactly mac-related, only thing I really know is cooking, eheh.

As for slander, I kind of know what you're going through. My dad used to work for the local government, and he was doing his best to promote the local economy, bringing in new businesses and clients, and actually being honest at it. He had big plans for our province.

Unfortunately, this shook up certain individuals who were content to take advantage of their positions of power at the expense of others. After a while, we started to hear and read things in various local media about how corrupt my dad was. If he was, we never saw anything from it, I'll tell you that.

After a while, my dad just resigned, seeing as how being honest was getting him nowhere, rather than play along with them and their sordid games. Until now, my city's still messed up, and the same people are still around.

Fear not. We will have that mental stability issue fixed in no time. As a bonus we might also fix your poor judgement.

Just kidding. However besides being a resourcehug, vista managed to break quite a lot of software and we were actually suffering in "production" at uni until the "upgrade" to XP fixed everything. This was on a student notebook (not mine). All the windows computers at uni just plain sucks. Somehow they managed to screw up the system even more than windows normally does and nobody knows how they managed to butcher them like that XD

It is a resource hog, but when looking for something that is a 64bit environment for Windows, Vista64 is much better than XP64. One of the big problems is that Windows said a lot of computers can run Vista, when they really can't. If you have a powerful computer, isn't that bad.

I'm just hoping that Windows 7 will fix all the problems they made in Vista ^^i

    Great article at Mac Fan!
Sad to hear about the Straits Time... unfortunately, there are still too many tabloids and crappy newspaper that uses prejudice and misinformation to sell it.
Even sadder is that there are lots of people who support that kind of stuff.

But screw that, they don't deserve our attention, let's get to the techies... XD

I'd want to switch to a Mac, but there are too many things I still need the PC for... well, it's like 50% gaming, but still.
But I'm not a Mac hater or anything (I don't like Apple Fanboys though, in the worst definition I mean), and I'd really love several of the resources a Mac has...

About magazines, I answered wrong-ly... I thought Danny was asking about Mac magazines only.
I'm buying less PC magazines these days, but years ago I bought 5+ of them EVERY MONTH.

Since I collected several of them, I have piles and piles of magazines back at home.

Nowadays it's more like... I take a look at the cover, and if it has something that I want to read about, I buy it. So it's 3- every month.

This is great to see you in Mac Fan featuring both dannychoo.com and Mirai Inc. I have struggled through the magazine in the past and it is one of the things that always pushes me to improve my Nihongo. Nice to hear that you where portrayed in a non-bais way after that seedy piece of journalism in The Straits Times.

Anyway, I do buy computer magazines often. I like to read articles like this one and it often helps in gaining enough information to expand on learning something new.

It is good to hear what you are doing with Miriai Inc. These are the type of activities I want to be involved in when I finish with this second degree. I just spend so little time exploring and learning what you are doing. My computer minor has taken me more into day to day business processes. Might be fine for a business professional but not what I want. I still feel some of these classes will give me something. It has become a struggle to keep them from stealing all the time I was to learn SEO and Web Development as well as study my Nihongo.

When you talk about childhood, I find myself reflecting as well. I didn't grow up in a health environment as well. Just don't feel comfortable talking about it in public. I guess in simple terms, life sucked as a young person.

Same here, I would have probably met my wife if I hadn't developed an interested in Japan. I know in the end all this hard work will pay off and I can get to do many of the things I really want to do in life. Right now it feels like everything important is get so little attention...

I don't buy computer magazines. The thing is that it's supposed to give me information and either they talk about stuff that's completely irrelavent to me or they write about interesting stuff but then I know more about it than the article says. Either way it's a waste of money and time. I guess it tells something about the quality of the local computer magazines.

The story about The Straits Times sounds like when I ended up in the school newspaper. I was interviewed and took it seriously. Once it was printed I saw that I was quoted with a whole lot of stuff but I didn't say any of it. I was quoted for using baby language and basically acting like a weird freak (doing stuff that would be acceptable at age 2-4). I complained to the school and without investigating or even talk to the guy who wrote it, they dismissed my complain stating that I had to have said that, otherwise it wouldn't have been printed. By random I heard somebody asking the writer if I really said what I was quoted to say and he said that I had said something else, but it made the article boring so he decided to change it into something funnier.
Like Danny, such an article made people end up in the list of haters (which you can read about here: http://www.dannychoo.com/adp/eng/1615/Toyosu+Photo+Walk.html )

Congratulations on appearing in the article. Sorry to hear about their lack of truism within it. At least you've gained extra exposure!

Only magazines I've bought are HobbyLink Japan and GQ. I agree that while having the tangible item in hand is greater than reading a digital copy. However for news that revolves around computers, the information always gets updated online much faster and (supposedly) more accurately as opposed to it's counterpart. Thus for anything regarding the technology realm, I'd prefer to read online. Nevertheless, if I had the time I would read any magazines relating to it regardless. Call it in the inner geek in me or just wanting to know something.

And going off to a slight tangent, after reading this article and the haters post again I do feel inspired. Thank you. I want to succeed in passing level 2 in the JPLT's. I know I am at level 4 and should aim first for level 3. Afterwards, or maybe simultaneously, I should continue studying Mandarin.

I have used Macs. The last U.S. Open Cup Final I covered; I couldn't write it up on my computer because I had a flight the next day to Denver, CO. The next afternoon in Denver; I wound up in a tavern which had free computers for use. They were all Macs.
I don't read a lot of computer magazines, but I bought one issue of "Computer Shopper" to see how the market had evolved, and to see which vendors and purveyors were still in business.
But I bought another Windows®-based computer because I am more keyboard-oriented. That this computer was inexpensive considering how much money I had allocated for such was a huge plus. When I use a mouse, I am pretty good at right-clicking.

heh im still an anti mac as a pc user and ill prolly will be for some time until something more drastic changes.

Pricing aside, the lack of flexibility in Mac hardware is quite a pain. while M$ windows have crappy registry issues, if ur decently tech savvy it shouldnt be a problem. Getting support for it is also a tad bit easier since theres a lot more windows user.

While mac, gawd the last time i used it, sometime around april 2008? at my uncle's place. trying to get msn and play back .mkv/h264 animes was already an epic task. T_T

Playing .mkv/h264 is easy. Just install Perian and it will ensure that the codec is in the plugins. Quicktime player can handle them just fine (rather good in fact) once you installed the codec. I presume windows will have problems playing video without the codec as well XD

As for MSN... well I don't use it but it took me like 15 sec to find the download link. If it screws up after you get the client, then I blame MS for making crappy mac software and not the OS ;)

Dang, America is so far back in the technology. I wish we could get 2TB externals, but the largest ones are 1TB and for internals, the largest is still 1.5TB! They're also pretty expensive, about $120 for a 1.5TB internal, and I don't even want to check prices on 1TB externals... I wish I could make a quick trip to Akiba and get a few goodies.
I really should learn Japanese, just because it might be handy in the future when I finally decide to move to Japan, and I also want to read those magazine articles! >_>

Wow that's awesome Danny! You're getting more and more recognized by more people!

    And about the Straits Time, I read it and I just thought that Danny was getting more popular and I wasn't actually paying attention to he article^^;
Upon deeper thought, I do feel that the paper was kinda rude but I still want to buy a wallet made by you! lol

I started using a Mac G4 in 2002 and I'd never be without a Mac now. PC's are just so clunky and bloated that I could never go back.

    Your endeavors are so inspiring!

Although my current goals are mostly those that helps stabilize my poor background without much advancement.

After that, then I can go and attempt to pursue my dreams~~ (I would love to visit Japan today and if possible, be able to experience it beyond a tourist point of view)

I think whatever you do outside of your profession is not their business, and feel sorry for you and your wife for the fabricated articles..But that also means you are TOO cute and unique...from Otakumama

congrats on the coverage but sry to hear about the less than kind words/comments that were added for good measure. Although most 'celebs' would start going after the mag, demanding sums of money for the embarrassment/loss of earnings etc. but then more people take note of the bad stuff and it turns out all good for'em!

Wow, I didn't know that Strait Times will write that kind of article (between, I read it).
It's sad to see why publishers will do just to ruin someone's success in hopes to create more stories why rewriting the whole interview. Well, Strait's off from my list of newspaper whenever I go to Singapore. This is not a good way for publishers to promote their articles, not to mention with you Technical Specialty in Consumer Generated Material Search Engine Optimization (omg... I remembered the term =p)
