I heard Shibuya is the most busiest right?
Professor
http://www.blacktokyo.com
i believe that shinjuku-eki is the busiest. the station was used by an average of 3.64 million people per day in 2007, making it the busiest train station in the world in terms of number of passengers. shibuya ranks 4th.

looks like the meiji era. 23 October 1868 to 30 July 1912. Could be a few years after it.
I see Edo-wan too... the old name for tokyo bay.
武器職人
It's Edo-ya, not Edo-wan.
Plus, the bay is a little far from Shibuya.

ah ok, didnt pay attention to the third kanji. just looked at the edo part and instantly thought of bay.

That's over a hundred years old picture then... no wonder there are so many changes... Even a year can make a lot of difference in an active city.
Slacker
Judging from the Kanji and the direction of the writing it has to be from after World War II. I'd guess late 40s or early 50s. It's certainly not from the Meiji or Taisho eras.

That's pretty ridiculous... how old is that photo?

When I think that some parts of my city do look like that today, makes me wanna buy a one way ticket to JP.
To know the decade it has been taken in, look at the street light and how many persons have traditional umbreallas and clothes. I guess it could be 50s maybe...

The old picture reminds me of old China too. Possibly because of the amount of Kanji. I guess western influences hadn't introduced more katakana use yet. Or possibly that Kanji is being used less nowadays.

my professor for History of Science at Tokyo University showed us this picture during one of the classes. You can tell its Shibuya yes by the sign thats says Shibuya Eki but on top of that it says
I no Kashira Sen. which is the current keio inokashira line that links Shibuya and Kichijouji. And judging by the location of that currently and before, it should correspond to the RIGHT of the photo taken by danny :P
since inokashira line was made 1933-1934 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kei%C5%8D_Inokashira_Line not sure on those sources but, it should be taken around before WW2...i guess?
