Ash, not a great model line to be honest. The quality of plastic and joint design is lacking on a few of their models. Fun to customize though. Just be careful which one you purchase.

wow.. i didn't know Tamiya 4WDs are still popular in Japan.

For my first mecha series, it would have to be Gundam 00.. TTGL was one of them too.

If you mean the one withe pile bunker on the right arm and a stored sword on the left arm then R1 is right, it's from SRW and it is named Wild Wurger, German for Wild Shrike ( a Shrike is a bird of prey)

It's actually my favorite mech from SRW, I fell in love with it since Super Robot Wars @ 2.
It's pilot Arado Balanga is my favorite too, he uses the BGM Wild Flug (Wild Flight) when he upgrades to this mech)

That first Gurren Lagann kit is EPIC. I've been drooling at it for days now, orz. That Bandai VF-25 kit looks amazing, too. I've never really owned Valkyries before so hopefully that VF-25 will be my first.

As for my first encounter with mecha/gundam, that'd have to be back in the mid 90's. I've always appreciated the cool mecha/gundam designs and loved them ever since I first got into it. Not sure which series has THE BEST mecha/gundam's since I love and appreciate them all. ^^

I don't rightly remember what my first encounter with mecha was, but I would say the various Transformers I received as a kid. For "real" mecha, it would probably be the Scopedog Red Shoulder Turbo Custom made by Takara. For "super" mecha it was a die-cast Great Mazinger that "converted" into a "car". For Gundam, it was a knock-off Eyezack model made by Dragon, which is now a respectable model company nowadays.

I'd say Macross plus was the first mecha type series I saw (apart from Transformers in the 80's), but have not been bitten by the mecha bug so far.

I did buy my son a Bandai #0001 FA-78-1 Full-Armor Gundam (is the description right?) that was on special at a local Pop Culture Expo a few months back, though I really know nothing about it.

    Unemployed bummer

Macross would be my first love and 1st mecha experience from anime, (not counting Transformers i guess) which was broadcasted 1st as Robotech in my country back when i was young. now i also collect Gundam kits, mainly from the series beginning from Wing onwards, apart from my Yamato valkryies. these two collections set me back quite a bit that i've had to cut down rather drastically in times of tight wallets.

ne ne Danny-sama, hitsumon ga aru desu! i know the 1st few pics of Alto's VF-25 are Bandai's kits but what about the last two, especially the one in gray which seems to be Ozma's VF-25? is it not the upcoming transformable figure from Bandai as well? sugoku kakoii desu ka? or fairly below the model kits in terms of sleekness?

Errrr id say my first ever encounter with mecha was probably when I was around 5-8years of age - I use to watch the old old old Transformers cartoons on tv but i didnt think too much of it at the time. after that it was the usual crap like power rangers & V.R Troopers etc etc nothing much till I finally got into highschool & had fast internet where i could trawl websites for random stuff & I stumbled across a wallpaper of Wing Gundam - thats when my love of Gundam started to develop since then I have seen if not all then most of the Gundam animations & loads more mecha orientated manga/anime.

In total i have about 6 Gundam models (2 still boxed that i need to get around to work on)

MG Full Armour Double Zeta Gundam
    Freedom Lightning Edition (thats huge)
PG V.1 Wing Zero Endless Waltz Custom (my favorite)
    MG Strike Freedom Extra Finish
MG Destiny Gundam Extreme Burst Mode (still boxed)
MG Luka's Strike + I.W.S.P - Seed Astray (still Boxed)

Id like to expand on my model collection but its hard getting models in the UK. I think theres a UK based website called Gundam Mania or something which sells Gundam models but their stock levels are more bone dry then a cactus in the south pole. (which proves my poit - they ARE hard to get)

Errrrr Oh yeah & I love armored core & Macross!!!!

Mecha??? Anything goes. I love the designs from Macross F, I'm really hyped about Alto's unit made by Bandai(Darn, I really need to start watching Frontier, I can't afford those classic designs from Yamato, there too damn expensive) Of course Gundam is my favorite mecha line, been collecting since I was 8 years old and I'm 19 today (Though to be honest my collection is growing at a very slow rate)

My favorite Super Robot is the RahXehphon, my favorite real robot would be the Wild Wurger from Super Robot Wars.

I prefer WildFalken myself when comparing the 2.

Strange thing is, I prefer Alteisen over WildWurger but WildFalken over Weisritter. The wild pilots make for a more interesting pair than the ATX team tho, esp since Arad keeps poking fun of Seollas breasts.

I'm not really a mecha person, but am seriously considering Alto's VF-25.
    Some question from a nub tho, how complicated is the assembling method compared to, let's say Bandai's MG Gundam kits? They're the only real mecha kits I've had experience with, since I could "complete" them without glue or cement or paint ^^;
My first encounter with mecha is probably the Transformers, and the SD Gundam kits I bought randomly when I was 6-7 years old. Now I've fallen into the evil grasp of female figurines, but Danny's recent post reminded me of my old interest.

There are a lot of kick ass mechas in here, especially the Gurren Laganns they are so epic. Would certainly buy the Valkyrie (insert original manly macross OP), but would also like to know who the designer/name of the figure is for the female sitting on the white looking leg mecha.

It was 14 or 13 years ago that I was watching Gundam Wing, and my first kit, though I didn't built all of it myself, was a Gundam Airmaster 1/100 and Evangelion Unit 01 at about the same time. Then they dropped out of memory until Singapore aired Evangelion 7 years ago on some now-defunct TV channel that got my interest. It ended, however, and I lost interst until Gundam SEED reintro-ed me to mecha and intro-ed me to the anime world. :P

God, I want that Wildwurger. It's just wurger-licious.

    I really Want that Linebarrel!!!

As for my first Mecha show. to show my age, it was the original Daikyu Maryu Gaiking dubbed in english. I searched through old video rental places to get as many eps as I could find, as well as any others such as Getter robo G, Go Lion and Dairugger 15 (better known as voltron over here)

In terms of Best mecha. For aesthetics, the clear winner is the Five Star Stories. If you don't think that the series has the best looking mecha, you either have not read it or are not really a mecha fan!!
But Gundams take up most of my mecha collection...

This is great coverage- thanks a lot. I got hooked on Gundam with a lot of other people in 1997 when Toonami aired Gundam Wing. Saw the entire series, Endless Waltz and was hooked. Watched the regular Gundam, 08th MS team, etc and was hooked again. I did not like Seed or Destiny.

Having said that there are some really nice figures there. The two Gurren one's looking incredible. I'm going to have to keep my eyes peeled for some of these when they start getting released.

So many mecha goodies, sadly I don't know all of them. I was hooked on mecha genre -- the first genre that really hooked me into anime -- because of Gundam Wing in our local channel when I was a kid. Then I later discovered that there many more Gundams besides Wing because of a magazine, then Super Robot Wars(before my party is almost composed of Gundams because I don't know the other mechs, lol).
Nice Gurren Lagann with an appropriate-size giga drill, TTGL is so awesome but sure it will be so costly. xP

Escaflowne was my first encounter !! when i was seven actually. And i thought it was gundam wing because my friend said go watch gundam wing. But i watched escaflowne and the transormable mecha into dragon which made me go wow... So i watched gundam wing the next day and loved it. Got a MSIA wing gundam. but didn't watch anymore gundam til endless waltz aired on tv. And then watched seed when i was eleven. And i was finally old enough to understand anything the people were doing. And why le creuset hated everyone. So i was enchanted and stuck with it.

Danny, just like you my first model mecha was a destroid spartan from Macross, along with a VF-1J. After this I saw the VF-19 from macross 7 (hadnt seen the mecha at that point). It was red, and awesome, and thats all I cared about. After that gundam was an easy transition, and much more addicting.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann looks very cool, I want one of those but hope it doesn't cost a lot. Also love the VF-25F from Macross Frontier series coz it can change into 3 stages of battroid , gerwalk and fighter, and still looks cool.

My first contact with Gundams was probably 08th MS Team, or was it Wing...? But what really transitioned my from casual Gundam fan to wannabe hardcore PG fan was SEED. After that I went out to buy a MG Freedom, MG Wing, and PG Strike. That's my only collection so far, hence the wannabe earlier. Only PGs and exceptional MGs for me now on, since I built some HGs and NGs for my friends, and I didn't really like them (too small, not enough detail). Oh, I did recently get the 1/60 Exia (sad it wasn't PG...), since I'm a sucker for huge ass swords. The joints not really flexible though. =

I'm more into the process of building them. Posing them in cool or gay poses is rather fun too, especially with those flexible PGs. =D

Looking forward to the Valkyrie from Bandai. I have an old VF-1S kit from Hasegawa and it needs lots of putting/sanding. I hope Bandai makes it easiler.

Can't remember the name of the first Gundam because I was very young, might not even hav been a gundam haha. So probably GP03S and Wing Zero would probably pwn all, seeing as it can destroy anything with one shot of it's twin buster rifle!! ^^

Majority of my anime related stuff are mechs. My first encounter with mechs (as with any other Filipino kid) was Voltes V and Daimos. I still like those series until now. The cheesiness they have sort of "adds to the flavor". Of all the mecha anime I've watched though, I can say that Neon Genesis Evangelion pwns them all for me.

My first mecha encounter was either voltron or beast wars, back when cartoons made since and still came on Saturday mornings. Gundam wing was probably my official entrance to mecha since that was my first gundam show.

The models I have now are..
    1/144 Shining Gundam(G Gundam)
    - Gundam Deathscythe Hell
    1/100 HG Wing Zero(no-custom)

The first two I got when I was when I was 5 then 8. I got Wing Zero this past fall as a present for myself.

See, my too grown up to buy these figures and such is really breaking down, because I love the MACROSS stuff. A weakness from way back. I was a supah early adopter of Japanime, think early 80's playa's, got you all beat.

Anyway, those Macross related items are really excellent.
