Actually it has already been done! I see signs in these sushi conveyor restaurants popping up soon reading "GAIJIN, NO CAMERAS ON CONVEYOR PLEASE!". This is going to turn into one of those things where every tourist to Japan will want to put their camera on a sushi conveyor. It was fun at first but it is truly getting old.
Future civil engineer, amateur artist and animator
Agree...some gaijin who went to Japan might ask 'Why is there a 'no gaijin' sign in front of the shop?' and some might even make a big fuss out of it....this is the answer to the question.

It's a bit the same here in Bangkok, some people get upset when the see a "NO FARANG" sign but that is there mainly for the tourists who don't know how to behave in Thailand. If you talk to the owners in the native lingo they'll let you in most of the time.

I think the gaijins asked for permission first, lol. It's more of a do this at your own risk situation haha.

It very much depends where you film it in Japan - Japanese people can be extremely friendly and open on first contact (Kansai, Osaka , Kyoto especially). I think also Hokkaido people are way more relaxed than Tokyo people.
Which is kind of a shame of course, as many foreigners who go to Japan will come to Tokyo (esp Amine fans to Akihabara) , but then miss out of the cool ways of the regional Japanese folk.

Which is exactly why when I do go to Japan.. I'm only going anywhere but Tokyo the first time.

Wow, never knew this is getting so popular; I saw a different one about 3 weeks ago. I wonder what the people think... I mean the people around you would chuckle, but the people half way across the room have no idea where that thing even comes from. Then the kitchen staff must be puzzled too haha.

Agreed. As cool as it is (I admit to wanting to do this after seeing it here), I think it'd be terribly offensive, only tolerated by the fact that I'm a foreigner. Doesn't exactly set a good example, though if they asked permission first, I don't see the harm (customers might have a different view).

they should have like a built-in camera on a random plate and just serve stuff on it and watch it's lifespan from the kitchen out to the guest then back to the kitchen.

Ah I remember seeing the one from 2006, cool to see another one.
If I tried that with my camera here in the US I expect either someone would get pissed and turn it off/break it or else it would be stolen. Too bad, 'cause it's cool to see all the reactions. Also, I don't think we have any restaurants like that around here...
Question on the restaurant - do you pay a fee and eat any sushi you want as it goes around? If not, what?
College Student
Rather than an all you can eat, you have to pay by the amount of colored plates you have eaten/taken. Plates have different colors and patterns usually on the rim that has a fixed cost. A red plate may cost 100 yen and a golden plate may cost 600 yen.
This is why in the first video, you see a guy with a towering stack of plates. The plates will not be removed from your table until you are done and that is when an attendant comes and adds the plates for you.
Thanks.
That's pretty clever.

I saw the second one a couple of weeks ago in youtube, the funniest part is the guy picking his nose hehe.
About the invasion of privacy, it always comes to my mind when I see random pictures taken by foreigners, I can't stop thinking how would I react if it happened to me. At least in the big cities they have to be used to foreigners taking pics of every single thing that seems strange to them, it's just that sometimes you don't see happy faces once they realize. But anyway it's probably the same with tourists all over the world.

I will be doing this if I happen to go a sushi restuarant that has a rolling thing on the top of the table.
An awesome idea, but I guess it'll only work in Japan, as Japanese people are probably one of the most honest bunch when it comes to strangers' objects. If I try it in a sushi bar here, I'll probably need to follow it to make sure it doesn't get taken away.

That was totally fascinating. It's interesting to see who smiles and laughs about it, who gets peeved, and who gets freaked out. Though the proportion of people who took it well kind of surprised me, it makes sense when I think about it--a social setting like a restaurant loosens people up, so they laugh more easily.

Wow. Everyone really seems to have enjoyed this. Only a couple of people seemed to notice that this is a pretty rude thing to do! Sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but this is really not acceptable behaviour, is it? It's rude to the customers (notice how they are not amused-- except for some of the children), and it's disrespectful to the restaurant. It's also unsanitary!!
I have to admit that some of the footage is really pretty kool, but this is not the right way to go about getting it. Sorry. I have to disagree with this one; it's a typical gaijin thing to do; I'd never do it.

This idea is interesting, but somehow I feel its an invasion of privacy. I wouldn't like people taking images of me without my prior consent. As one comment above mentioned, this is a "gaijin" thing to do, and generally not acceptable in certain Asian countries.
