Long time lurker and since you made an entry about Los Angeles i decided to register so i could comment. Yes, Los Angeles has pretty much the crappiest road in the United States in my opinion . So what you experienced on the road is pretty common ^^.
Glad you enjoyed the food around here but if you want really good Chinese food you should visit the San Gabriel Valley area. And if you like Russian piroshki you should visit around Santa Monica blvd in West Hollywood. Plenty of Russian restaurants/shops.
Also i agree with you that meal portions in the US are huge compared to other countries. Hence, the stereotypical fat American...meh

I wonder how much of the U.S. you've seen if you think L.A. roads are awful. They're amazing compared to some of the cities I've been to.

Los Angeles freeways and highways are in pretty bad shape compared to the ones in the surrounding counties like San Diego, Riverside, Orange County and Ventura. My relatives from those area always complain about the bumpy freeways and road conditions in Los Angeles.

All of these things, I see everyday Danny.
Oh DANNY! Please, you should come to San Diego when the Comic Con is up! I'm not sure when it's going to be up, but come over and bring your Storm Trooper suit! I'm just saying.

Wrong answer. LA has the largest population of Chinese in the U.S. and naturally follows that the best Chinese food in the country can be found here. Seriously, San Gabriel Valley is like being in Taiwan/China without leaving the country.

Dannychoo: You didn't even visit the real Los Angeles did you? :p
Places like East L.A., Boyle Heights, Watts (My hometown) South Central L.A., Compton & maybe Long Beach.
Yeah your tourist guide always leaves those places out. :p
As for the question about bumpy roads; yes, we have some of the worst shaped roads due to so much traffic conjestion (spelling?). L.A. is overcrowded with people and automobiles. I've been to Las Vegas Nevada and people who come from out of the state and they all say that no one has it as bad as L.A. in terms of so much traffic.
Right now L.A. is spending so much money that it's hard for L.A. to deal with one thing at a time. L.A. is busy building a lot of lofts and condos, unecessary ligth rail that is making MTA go bankrupt and boost prices on bus fare. SO the bumpy roads are dead last to deal with, but it doesn't mean that they aren't getting fixed.
We are also known to have the most car chases in the nation, maybe even the world.
Still, there's no place like home and besides, Downtown L.A. is the gates of heaven. :D

I knew you were here Danny, because I read about Imprint in Giant Robot magazine (the best magazine we have here in the U.S.)!
Yeah the food portions are ridiculous here, aren't they-- that's why we don't have those tiny tables that you posted about recently.
There's lots of kool stuff in LA and California in general. I am 2077 mi / 3342 km away in Chicago, though. If you come to Chicago for some reason I can definitely tell you where to have some excellent chinese food.
I own my condominuim here in Chicago. It average-sized-- about 1000 square feet / 300 square meters (I don't know how many tatami-mats that is).
My fiancee and I are hoping to buy a place in Nishitokyo within the next 2 years and move away from here.

Its all like unnecessary stuff. Anyways Canadian portions IMO are like .3% less than the American's --_-- soo yeah... dad was kinda surprized too when he got to the US for the first time...

The U.S. have HUGE portions of food but most the people I know only eat about twice or so a day. Like me for a example I eat cereal at home for breakfast skip school lunch because they taste horrible but I do get water because I get thirsty and than I eat when I come back home and after homework I find myself thinking better on a empty stomach. So around 6 if I don't eat like this I just feel stuffed or just bloated which I hate.

How did you like the traffic? Heh. If you somehow miraculously managed to avoid it, you gotta try the 405 freeway at 17:00-20:00 at least once whenever you return.
Yeah chinese food is aplenty around LA, especially in Chinatown, Monterey Park, Covina, Walnut and San Gabriel.
Of all the food joints you visited, it seems the only thing you missed out on was Mexican food. Gotta try out the carne asada next time.

Best thing about L.A, I would say the weather/beach. Though, isn't it kinda annoying with the smog, or is it not that horrible as the news says?

smog was pretty bad a few decades ago. I don't really notice it in Los Angeles. Maybe I'm just used to it, but it's no better or worse than the San Francisco bay area or San Diego.
Thing is, Los Angeles is so spread out that it's going to depend on your area. I live in the west side near santa monica, culver city and the palms area and it's pretty good over here.
Tons of restaurants from all over the world on the side of the road when you're driving on Venice.

Well in the States everything is big Danny XD, I still remember going there for the first time and staying for 5 weeks and I got a shock because everything was frickin huge and the distances between things were big as well.
Not very fond of American food, the only thing I like is the "junk food" but other dishes?! Can't compare to our cuisine. The apartments here depend in how many rooms they have, T0, T1, etc..., normally people buy T2 which means that they have two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and one or two bathrooms, normally its very spacious. Currently I live in a vivenda (can't remember the word in english), it's a two "store" house with a garden (it's big). Would upload some pictures on my blog but won't due to security reasons.

That first food takeaway looks kinda of yum. I like those thin rice noodles, stir fried vermicelli!
We had Calpis here for a short while and then it all changed to Calpico which I thought was a another brand trying to copy Calpis at the time until I realised what they did. All the Calpico here are imported from Indonesia.
Looks like you had yum cha or dim sum as they call it over in the States I think. Oh I want to try some Bubba Shrimps one day. I heard they are yummy and those toast look really buttery and delicious, too.
Living space is generally quite spacious here. Nothing like Hong Kong or Japan I guess.

I have a serious question: I read your post about while you were in Akihabara and it seems you got a lot of great pics of the merchandise in stores and stuff. If you go to J-town near the Japanese cultural center, check out the shabu shabu restaurant. There's only one that has a long line outside its door every freaking day, so you can't miss it. So gooooood.

The southland is the only place besides Chicago where I have lived for any length of time. But that was only twenty months back in 1981-82.
I think it is still a nice place to visit.
Despite what one respondent here scribed, Los Angeles *really needs* a comprehensive rail transportation system. Depending on motor buses to handle all of its traffic is completely nonsensical.
I would not go as far as scrawling that _Giant Robot_ is the best magazine out here, but it is very, very good. For all the locals urging you to visit their cities, Johnny, the place you _should_ have gone is Giant Robot's shops and restaurant in the Sawtelle district of western L.A.
The really stunning area I found in Los Angeles was the *under-reported* little section of Hollywood, north of Hollywood Blvd., overlooking the Hollywood Bowl, which is non-vehicularized streets. [i.e.: You can walk the blocks, and there are houses on the hills, but the garages where these house's owners would store their autos are in a separate location.]

Oh Danny, you make me miss home so much! >.< I've been to the places in almost all of the photos repeatedly. I don't know about the freeway question though, because they seemed normal to me, certainly not as bumpy as I've felt in other places in the U.S. that should really have better road repair than they do... <.<
Other good facts about the region: Santa Monica beach is really fun location to go for a run. There are loads of ethnic restaurants there too (which I'm reminded of constantly as there is no Peruvian food at all in Kansas). Going on Jurassic Park the ride and then Backdraft the ride over and over were excellent ways to get wet and dry off with much excitement. Also there are plenty of buses and trains to get around without a car (I had to live like that for years once! XD).

Yup that is the 3rd Street Promenade just a block alway from the Santa Monica Pier. It's 3 blocks of uptrend designer fashion and if that isn't enough for someone there is a large mall at the end of the block.

Yes Danny food here comes in massive quantities. However there is still great places to eat that favor quality over quantity, only problem is have to know where they are because great restaurants are sparse and far scattered.
The roads here are terrible, bet there are worse places but its definitely below average for a large city.
I love all the great recommendation from everyone on where one should visit on a trip here. They are all great places and all have their merits. I think that is one of the alluring parts of Los Angeles, its so large and diverse. You really can't see all of it in one short visit. Southern California definitely has something that should appeal to everyone and in the rare case it doesn't, I bet you can find it within a moderate drive. The same can be said of California as a whole.

Oh wow, somewhere I (sort of) know! :D
I live to eat, not the other way around~ I'm not surprised about the quantity thing...I've heard from my foreign friends that they can share a one-person meal here and still have leftovers. LA (and CA in particular) is a very "full" place, there's always something you haven't seen. :)
And cons. Fanime in a few days, and then AX, followed by SDCC! I'll only be attending sdcc this year, tho.

Ah, LA. My home town. That last pic of the Korean food, you didn't happen to get that at Hodori did you? I also see that you went to Marukai. I used to work there. All the cheap stuff there....expired.

Living in LA my whole life. I can honestly say, I've noticed the portion sizes increasing.
I usually share a meal, and still have leftovers.
