But are those numbers biased by the fact it is about marriage only, that companionship is not taken as comparison and that there are other factors that enter the picture such as economic instability (for the world, countries, companies, families and individuals)? Money is a requirement if you want a decent marriage and stable, long-term relationship (Of course compatibility, trust and happiness have to be there too).
As for myself, I wish to find the one in the future and get married one day (and I believe in true, long-lasting love and monogamous relationship as well), but if it does not turn out that way, I will remain a loner as default. ^^;

me & girls dont really seem to mix - probably my taste in girl or probably the fact that i dont look like brad pitt or something. i admit that im not exactly the best looking man in the world - theres no need to tell me that. but. its hard to find someone who will accept you for who you are, someone whose not too fragile that wil leave you as soon as one of her or your mates joke about you eyeing up another girl.

so far Ive found only one girl who was perfect for me, so perfect she literally could be my soul mate...sadly shit happend - things got really really complicated due to personal things on her side & she slowly started to push me away. I spent 2 years chasing her. trying to make sure she was ok - trying to be there when she needed someone to talk to, someone to listen to her, someone to hold her & tell her that things are going to be fine but no matter how much effort i put in we just drifted further & further apart & I went through a long period of depression - blaming myself that i that maybe i didnt do or say enough. i couldnt stop tearing myself apart mentally everday. looking at myself & wondering what im doing wrong & seeing if i could prevent the same thing from happening again.

if there was one way i could explain my pain & my anger then it would be like watching a close family member or a close friend die right in front of your very own eyes.

things are different today - i try to be not so quick to anger, but the most important thing is I learnt to let go. but its in my nature that once i get attatched to something its hard for me to let go

I'm engaged but for 18 years straight I had absolutely nobody since all my prior love interests moved away to another state or country...not because of me but because I had bad luck...actually good luck because I'm marring into a Japanese family now ^_^

Marriage rate is also down? Because a few years ago i heard the birth rate in Japan was low. Makes sense, no marriage, so no kids.

Here in the states it's quite the opposite, in fact here in Southern California, couples are getting married for the wrong reasons. When i say the wrong reasons, i mean couples are not getting married because of their love for eachother but because of U.S. Citizenship. Most illegal immigrants here go out and find someone only to marry them to get legalized. Some of the U.S. Citizen's actually agree and are aware of the concequences if they are caught in a false marriage.
It takes 3 years to officially become a U.S. Citizen if you marry a U.S. Citizen.

I almost became a victim of this. I was proposed by a 19 year old girl who i was in love with. Unfortunately she didn't have those same feelings for me and she was only interested in one thing and when i figured it out i had no choice but to cut her out of my life for good. I will not marry someone unless they are in love with me.

I am interested in getting married sometime in my life when i find the right person but after my last experience i will have to stick to 2D for years to come. :)

Yah, actually Japan is opposite the world in regard to % men vs % women. I don't know the exact figure, but worldwide, women out number men. Though that may not hurt you if you're going to Japan to look for love, since apparently 56% of women aren't married. '~'

I guess these days, with lots of educated people, everybody has high expectations. For me, sometimes a girl likes me but I don't like her, and vice versa. Also, I have trouble sharing my emotions. My inner me is locked down, kinda like a bunker.

Marriage nowadays are full of responsibilities and promises, people may start to consult lawyers before committing to a relationship, even if not, people still concerns what they can get out of the marriage.

There is a story I heard from Hong Kong that a girl dumped a guy right before marriage because her mother told her that the guy she marries to cannot provide her wealth upon divorce or death.

Celebrities now undergo a very high rate of divorce, and to me it sounded more like a trend than a serious matter to them.

I am not going further about marriage, but I sincerely hope that people understand the true meaning of marriage before human extinct.

Whoa, you have shown more passion towards ones you have fallen for than I ever have. If I tended to like a guy, I never usually did anything and soon after would forget my feelings for him.

Funny tho', the only guy I ever dated is now the guy I am married to. I never saw myself as one to get married just two months ago, especially at 22. I always thought I'd be like 30, or I would never tie the knot.

Very inspiring stories Danny, full of ups (?) and downs...just as a rich life is intended to be. Almost to the point where I was thinking, wow, thats sounds like some J-dorama I've watched before.

In retrospect, I feel I have been the selfish type all my life. All my previous relationships have always ended with me not really caring especially the last one. I met this girl in college once; we saw each other for a while. We seldom fought, broke and made up several times, I even cheated on her once (with her best friend, I am pure EVIL) and she found out about it but still she forgave me (one of the lowest days of my life). I even proposed to her once and she accepted but later recanted because she felt i was pressuring her at such an early age, we were both 19. The relationship ended when I had to move overseas for my studies. she's moved on, I've moved on but sometimes i think, that she really might've been the ONE.

The next time I ever end up in a relationship, I damn sure will make it last and not be selfish or abusive of the girls feelings.

regarding marriage, I'm an old fashioned romantic and still believe in it, typical loving dream of a house with picket fence, wife, kids, and a dog named Shep.

Interesting topic and story. Ah... the things we do when young! (^.-) From what I've seen, the trend is basically universal amongst "first-world" nations. Specifically in Tokyo I've found that below 28 girls prefer to focus on a fun time together - movies, restaurants, shopping, Disney, Onsen, etc. Over 28 they also enjoy a fun time - but increasingly are looking to "go to the next level" of the relationship. So... you can use that date to plan your dates accordingly. I'm new to Japan - and not Otaku (sorry) - but this site has been a goldmine for ideas on what to do and where to go. Invariably, on a date, I hear "You know Tokyo better than I do!" Thanks Danny!

Japan isn't the only county that's suffering from a declining marriage rate. Oddly enough, it's happening in China and Korea (highest divorce rate in Asia, if not the world) as well; not sure about the rest of the Asian continent. In China the reason is commonly blamed on the gender imbalance (more boys than girls because the Chinese are old-fashioned), but statistics/surveys in places like Hong Kong and Taiwan show that many young women of "marrying age" prefer to stay single. The theories are rampant as to why, ranging the ever so common "most men are strange and scary" to "I just don't want to."
Many experts say it's also due to the fact that many working women like to work and realize that once they get married, they will have a family and pretty much lose all that they've gained professionally. I can see this also being one of the prevailing ideas regarding Japanese marriage rates, but I'm pretty sure that the legions of otaku also scare quite a lot of the ladies away. lawl

I've already found the perfect girl for me. Never thought she'd be it when I first saw her.

I've only liked 3 girls in my lifetime. First one I met when I was still in grade school but never had the courage to speak up to her up till college. Found out she already had a bf and it utterly destroyed me. LOL. Second one I still find amazing and we remain very close friends to this day but I don't think it'll ever go more than that. Third one I met at a dance practice session and from then on the rest was history. She may not be as beautiful as the first two but she has everything else I've looked for. Totally unexpected really. :D Plan to settle down around 29-31.

A very interesting read and a touching story, Danny. I am no different than some of the statistics- I intend to marry, but I want to find the right person.

We have a similar problem in the USA-in that 1 out of every 2 marriages will end up in a divorce. Saving myself the heartache, I did not play the dating game in high school and I won't play it in College.

I put the cause of blame on the curse of the engineer ( I am an engineer), but I also put the blame on myself because I am not going out of my way in search of love- mainly because it is the desire to not be hurt, and really that is costing me, tbh.

Out of the millions of girls that I have passed by in my lifetime, maybe 10-15 have been caring people who are genuinly interested in being my friend. At one time, very early on I did have my own harem episode where I had 6 girls chasing after me over the course of a year or two.

Unfortunatly one of them ended in me yelling atone of them, which I inherited from family (and family issues is a completely different topic). I vowed never again to yell at a girl, or anything remotely causing discomfort to a girl (don't misconstrue that =p). Since that day it was a struggle to keep that anger in check, and a couple of years ago I was able to control it rather than supress it.

I think it is a huge shame and a big loss for many of the girls that refuse to get to know me. Maybe it is partly my fault because I am very guarded- but when people get to know me as a person- they see who I really am. My attitude on life and my politeness has gotten me very far and has helped me to accomplish many things.

I am one of those guys where you would never expect him to be a devoting and honest person that would be committed and very loyal in a relationship. I think, in part that not meeting the folks of our dreams is due to the fact that we don't want to hurt, and that we keep ourselves guarded. Some people are better at guarding than others- some can lower that guard a little, others like me find talking to those of the opposite sex a very hard thing to do. It has also been partly to blame on my environment and education choice- there are not a lot of female engineers on campus, I don't go to booze parties, I don't hang out with ditzes or glamor girls.

I try really, really hard to find that one special person, and I always tell myself that I will find her, that she is out there, and that she will be the luckiest woman on the planet when we meet. One look at what I do with my life should speak volumes about who I am. Passion, attention to detail, and a listener. I always said that I had no girlfriend because I thought my expectations were too high, when in reality I was guarding myself too much.

It is very disheartening to see your brothers, sisters, friends and cousins getting married or are in a relationship. My sister has a boyfriend. My best friend has a girlfriend. My cousin is getting married in two weeks- and everyone on my mother's side of the family is in a relationship. But I am the one who isn't in a relationship, and it can be very disheartening when relatives ask "does he have a girlfriend yet?". It hurts to hear it, but I am not angry with anyone because they don't know of my struggle. I get back up and continue on. She is out there, and once I meet her she will know that I am the right one also. I gurantee it.

That's weird, but seems to be true.

My fiancee decided we where getting married a long time ago. ^^ Dating for nearly four years now, we will get married June 2nd in Osaka. It has not been easy dating for nearly four years and being over 4,000 miles and one day apart. I think what works is we where friends long before we decided to get married. I guess I should say before she decided to tell me we where getting married. ^o^

I tend to think it's the other way around throughout most of the world. It feels like more women than men most places I have been. I do hear from my fiancee's single friends that it's hard to find a good man in Japan. Many of the Japanese guys I know are busy making their future and will get married when the time is right. I can tell that Japanese guys feel a lot of pressure that Japanese women don't. Like many cultures, the rules and expectations for the women have changed more than they have for men.

I was always wonder where I would find my future wife when I was younger too. For a long time I thought I would never get married. However, after living alone for many years I found that would never work.

Sorry for the cliches but they're true. Share what you have to offer. Your partner will see it. Those that don't see it can still be friends. Can't have too many friends - but only one partner.

Relationships are a partnership. I am who I am but I share that with her - and she shares who she is with me. Give and take. We are not exactly alike - but that's what makes it interesting.

And, since marriage is the core topic, I've had girls in Japan come into the relationship focused on getting a proposal. So, it's not dead... not yet anyway.

I think another thing that living in a developed nation brings out in people is structure and a plan for everything. A lot of people wonder if it's a good idea to marry because of the responsibility it entails, they're daunted by choices, "is something better going to come along while I'm married?" and ultimately a lot of people are just plain fickle. The larger number of people, historically used to live out of necessity and had little time to be "existential" like people in modern society are. People now have a lot more time to consider and think about things (even though few do, the only reason they think about things like partners is because sex pretty much drives the whole universe) and that can always lead to more doubt, more time to reflect on problems, heh, more time for infidelity.... Plus a lot of people think of marriage as a contract anymore, with divorces being based on money and finance or lack theref more times than not. It's really hard to believe that there are people that stay happy with each other for such long spans of time out there. I'm a hopeless romantic and I devote myself utterly to whoever I'm with, often times scarring me in the process, but I still end up doing it again. And I feel good about myself for it. Why play games and be mean to anyone you care about? We're here for such a short time, why not be happy and try to enrich the lives of those you hold dear? I personally try to strike a balance between doing what I'm passionate about and making time and such for those I care about. Doesn't always work, but..... hey life is a confusing maze ^^;

I might just do the same thing! Except I don't skate...>: ) I'm actually going to Japan next week! Meeting up with someone I met last year...Hopefully, romance is in the air? >: ) If not, I should try meeting other people!

About the Marriage Rate in Japan... ¿how could men make it increase if they are so much time working? O_o

that story about the rollerblade chase really had me laughing. no hard feelings but it's both a bit cheesy and hilarious imagining you chasing after a car, holding flowers after bodyguards pinned you down. that sounds like a script for a modern date movie to me, really :P

if i would now imagine that you maybe hold up your fist, shouting "GUTS!" and going after the girl...i should be a movie director :D

anyhow, that action was more honest and brave than anything i did so far. i'll give you that.

About right after high school, a lot of my classmates either were married or found that someone they wanted to marry. For some, they already have a family before they got the diploma. Being a son a soldier, I move around too much to have a stable relationship. I do intend to get married, but I have to be planted somewhere for more than just 2-3 years to make something at least work.

I do have a boyfriend and we've been together for almost two years now. It's a bit early to think about marriage, knowing that we're just almost two years into our relationship. We're saving up for the future though ^^

And though I think it is kinda extreme in Japan, the phenomena probably is worldwide....

Has more to do with people not considering marriage to be that much important anymore than people not being able to develop relationships.

This interview I watched had some japanese girls in their early 20's saying that they liked to date a lot, but didn't want to get in serious relationships because that would get in the way of their work and stuff...

Oh, the stories really moved me. Danny, you're so romantic! :D And the news are interesting. But, marriage rate and the rate of the couples are similar? Because most of the people think that marriages are old-style or they don't want to engage themselfs for a lifetime. Or maybe they just don't want to have the marriage problems like the coasts, ceremony, and that stuff. Or, they just testing each other, if there are really a couple. Because if they don't like each other then they just break up and don't need to divorce. Don't you agree?

I do not think that I will get married becaseu women are decetful and want to change us completly to the point where we do not have are own idendity. Plus on top of that I worked had to store myself a nest egg for retirement and I do not want some braud to take it all from me.
