When coming down to these two options, it gave me this thought:
How many woman go for a guy who bankrupts himself to make himself look good?

But before that, I wonder what will the result be if men are to choose between ugly/rich and beautiful/poor women?

my answer to you friend is a matter of preferances.some like it pretty, some like it rich, some like it both or more and thats why i say its a matter of preferances on both man and woman.there is no definative answer on what women/man really want for desires are endless

this world in reality, i must admit that often physical beauty is the first thing that will attract a person's interest...no doubt being beautiful give an edge at the beginning..
then when this settles, it will be the inner beauty (e.g character, behavior, attitude, kimochi, kokoro..bla bla bla) that set the reality then...

then again beauty doesnt last forever...

well all in all, if you already have someone please appreciate it...you wont know what you are missing until you lose it

and for those still looking for the one, enjoy yourself in searching for it, the fun is the part when you are searching...

hmm, its becoming a speech here..
well all in all, i think such things come in a big bundle, you can just judge it by a particular aspect such as wealth, or beauty or character, you have to judge it by the whole bundle...

At this rate they will remain single and wait so long for the target they will get old and slowly wither away.

Erm, they just asked about looks and money. They never mentioned anything about personality.

Personally I go after personality over anything else, second would have to be looks. I don't think I've ever considered money as a priority when looking for a gf.

This is rather saddening...Good looking or has the monies, that seems about right here in the US too.

Money is always a good thing to have, because it will reduce the amount of stress you'll have in life (Don't have to worry about bills as much), and looks are something that only matter at first.

If someone were to tell me that looks are the only thing that matters, I'd say they have very little experience with relationships, it does NOT work that way at all.

You could have a gorgeous girlfriend, but one personality that is just so unbearable, you can't stand being around the person.

Looks may be the first thing noticed, but personality always comes out on top in the end.

It'd be interesting if the survey accounted for age groups. From my understanding from research on Japan in the past, the older women care more about status and money, while the younger generation more about money. Eventually the younger generation ends up being like the older generation and the cycle repeats.

Really in the end, Japan in this respect doesn't seem that much different from the US.

So I'd say people are better off trusting their instincts on this one. I'll also say, it's easy to say something like "I go for young and poor" or "I want someone with money", but I think in the end it really ends up with personality.

Hmm... if I was rich, I don't think I'd be with girls like those, lol. Money isn't really an issue for me, good looks are quite nice, but the most important thing is personality. If you can't stand someone, a long term relationship would be hell. So I guess if I were rich, it would be a long term relationship with a girl with a great personality, or a bunch of short term relationships with a bunch of good looking girlies.

Hah... What kind of joke is that?
No seriously, I do despise that kind of woman who think they are some kind of princess or noble yet have nothing to begin with.
They must be glad they are women or I would teach them how to be humble with some kick to the arse.
And about the guys who do love being around them and don't care being considered as money providers alone... I pity them, I'd even say they are way to dumb to have fallen in such a deadly trap.

No really, what is about materialistic people? The day misfortune befalls on them, they will learn how harsh life can be... But it will be too late.
Damage will already be done (they will only get what they have planted: rotten fruits from wicked seeds).

yes i understand how sad it is...
sometimes its just not love that these young girls hooked up with them...well you guess it, its money

but i dont think its always money as well..
you have understand that many come from poor broken families
they needed attention and doesnt care from who it comes from

also some may have a hard life when they were younger due to being poor..so they wanted/dream of a better life where they may be able to do better off and even help they poor parent even if that way is a shortcut with some old man...

I know a Chinese woman in her mid 20's and she is married to a guy who just turned 39. This is her second husband and she married him because mostly because he was a dependable man.

Ed, I then hope it's a marriage of love, not of interest.
Exchanging the exclusivity of one's body (maybe purity in the best cases) and mind for money alone is something I can't look without a seemingly disgusted face... Even if some do not have a real choice in this.

I do I say this without sounding like an jerk... Err...with experience comes perspective. Ugh that doesn't song right...

Some women marry older men because they find older men to be more experienced in all things. Dependability means money, but it also means being able to count on someone strength of commitment to the marriage as well. Heck some younger women find older men very sexy.

Yes, these two are very much in love. One of the strongest relationships I have ever seen.

I'm trying not to turn this into a long post. I hope what I have said is clear.

I really don't think it's Asia, it's really like that anywhere. The world has really changed in 35 years or so. Before the woman would be subservient and the man would be expected to ask her out and then things would progress to marriage, etc, out of living up to the expectations of society. In recent decades though, especially now, women are basically given control of the "sexual destiny" of males. I don't even really need to demonstrate it to avid readers of this site and otaku in general. Just look at moe and such. The "tough" male is dying off to some degree, and increasingly you see "old-fashioned" girls adhering to that type. Men have to actually appeal to women most of the time now, and women make the choice of who they date and how fickle they're going to be about when and IF they get married. There's more to it, I've taken a sociology class built around it, but yeah, "sexual destiny" is the operative term.

People like that exist everywhere, but somehow i see more of them in Japan than anywhere else..

Ex: I had a student friend from Japan come over to America last summer. We brought him to the best Japanese restaurants in town and all he could say was that the "food wasn't fresh" which, duh, is totally true. That meal cost over a hundred U.S. $$. But at least he could've realized that he was smack in the center of this freakin' country (sorta) with a salty lake surrounded by flies.

He didn't appreciate ANYTHING. 4th of July parade, State Fair, anime con, Obon fest, normal teenage parties, etc. etc. Waste of money and time. D: I think i'm off topic now.

But people with income exceeding 10,000,000 yen p/a are likely to be in a higher managerial position which, of course, requires them to have solid personality (the interpersonal skill) as it's needed to lead subordinates efficiently and effectively.

Except maybe if they earn their lotsa money not as a manager but as a passive incomer..

You might be right, since their motivation for honing their interpersonal skill is likely for the sake of maintaining their high position in the company.

But maybe, companies with bright/cheerful culture, (google?), may actually have managers who honestly like to socialize.

Visit Brazil! =) We can consider a rich person if u get about 4,000 USD/month (near 50,000.00 USD/year), u can get a pretty girl, with nice eyes, lots of pantsu, but rarely they come with Otaku and with fetish.

I could never have a partner that wanted to be with me just for my money - not that I have a lot in the first place but thats not the point - I think its very unfair the way some women treat men & at the same time its unfair the way some men treat women.

you may have a partner that looks like she fell off a make up tour bus but can she cook? can she do the ironing??? can she work a washing machine??? & does she have a high enough I.Q to know that theres more to life then 300pairs of shoes & enough make up to rebuild the titanic from scratch?

Im not an asshole - I will spend money on gurlies but i dont work my bollocks of just so they can take liberties. one of the many things that infuriates me.

the women who continue to laugh at lower paid workers as well as those who refuse to even get a part time job - go jump off a cliff - your a waste of space & with all the make up or millions of pairs of shoes we may even save a whale or 2, possibly a few camels or snakes even.

I refuse to be part of such one sided relationship - & it doesnt matter to me if she will give me all the sex in the world I will still refuse. - im not here for her entertainment

I think that all depends on the person/people. I tend to see a lot of people that defy the "opposites attract" rule, and so whenever it is a deeper connection it tends to last, whenever two shallow people come together, sometimes their love of their individual egos and looks, or money or a combination of the two ends up working, but most of the time I see that there's conflict and things end. Most people that are shallow can't put up with each other long term, because most of them are hypocrites and very un-self-aware, so they hurl around insults at everyone else while they have the same problems. If they do get along it tends to be because they're ignorant and don't care and just want to be with someone pretty, or someone pretty ends up with someone with money that wants somebody pretty and neither cares that much about the other in the first place ^^;.

    Guys...

Why so much attention on the gold diggers... Look at the cuties who say they want a good looking guy even if he is poor. Heck, gold diggers are everywhere... These woman are long past the marrying age. No one will be rushing to snatch then up. Makes no difference if they are old and/or ugly rich guys.

Danny is right, Japan is full of great girls looking for a husband. If you don't want to believe me, just ask some of the single guys living in Japan.

Make a couple of Japanese female friends and don't go hard core otaku on them. Next thing you know, you will have several Japanese female friends.

Doesn't make a difference if it's Tokyo or elsewhere in Japan -there are some drop dead gorgeous girls in Osaka. Trust me, Japanese girls are always looking for clean, nicely dressed, fun guys.

Argh, that is so annoying that they didn't even bother to factor in personality when asking, they just asked looks vs. money! For me, personality trumps everything, but if I was asked this question I would probably respond with the poor good-looking guy, as I just totally don't care about money at all so looks are a more important factor than money, but not the most important factor at all.

    I guess that there are many women after rich men only, just like there are many men after pretty women only, but not every women/men are after rich men/pretty women. ^_^;

Personally, I don't really care about a guy's look (as long as he's not too ugly/fat/slim/short ^_^; average looks are fine), as personality/compatibility is what truly matters. Him not being rich also don't really matter (besides, being with a rich guy and live a rich life might actually be troublesome!), as long as he's also not a bum of course (I'd prefer a guy with a similar financial situation, I'm happy to live an average life if I can find happiness with the other person). ^_^

Nah... noone needs to go to Japan to find women thinking like that. They are all over the world.

Just as much as men looking for a fine piece of bums without concerning about any other characteristics whatsoever.

Humans are superficial. That's how it goes. That's why divorces are reaching new highs.

But anyways, on another note, I saw a few months ago an article saying that less and less japanese women are worried about getting married, or looking for husbands.

With high standards like those, it's not hard to understand why....

I guess divorce is caused mostly by a lack of compatibility, people who didn't bother to understand the other fully in terms of strengths, weaknesses, qualities and defaults before getting engaged/in companionship/married...
That's sad, but the mere truth, eh?

Also many are to self centered and not ready to make a commitment. A marriage is no longer about one persons needs and wants but about what is best for both. Some people just can't get that into their heads. Things will get hard and people need to stop running out on each other.

Weak, shallow people should never get married. Marriage is one of the biggest commitments one can make in life. It goes right next to deciding to have children.

Hey, its strange, because here in Mexico earn 4,000,000.00 yens anually is to be rich.

And earn 15,000,000.00 yens anually it's to be extremly rich.

In mexico you could live like a king with that money, even with 4 millions per year.

    So it depends.

I'd rather marry a woman who's got average looks but is intelligent and sensible, don't really care if she's poor or rich.

When i found my girlfriend, she was not the most beautiful girl, she was way shorter than me at 4'11" (I'm 6'2"), But she was still adorably cute.

She has a pair of captivating eyes like a 2D girl and she also has another pair of "captivating eyes" (if you know what i mean)

She has a cute little button nose and kissable cheeks. And everytime i hug her, she makes this cute little sound.

But most important of all, she's intelligent, capable, and mature.

She's also a talented artist, draws anime way better than me, she's good at math and works hard to achieve something.

She also accepts and puts up with whatever imperfections and issues i may have. When bad things happen, she comforts me and encourages me to be more strong.

Guess i'm just really lucky to have somone like her. Hope other men find someone like her too.

I am not surprise about this actually. Woman need a guy who have some money on hand or a steady job that make some income. Without that, they won't come near you or have a relationship. This is the real world and it's sad but it's true.

Call me laid-back or an idiot, but I say: whatever happens, happens. Looking at my attitude, I won't be attracting any who are specifically aiming for those two qualities either XD

Well, at least in Japan they have it easy. In Singapore, you can forget about getting a decent date if you lack any one of the 5 "Cs"; Car, Condo(small but really expensive apartment :/), Cash, Credit Cards(I prefer debit cards; less risky) and Credentials(Certificate is to narrow a scope). That's the new world order for you...

The point is there are about 3 million surplus men of marriageable age in Japan, so these women have a good chance of landing someone. However a guy earning over 15,000,000 yen per year can easily get himself a great-looking import wife if he wants to.

The average annual wage in Japan is under 4,000,000 yen but that probably includes arbeito workers as well as full-timers.

Both looks and personality should be decent, but in the end personality matters the most. If you want to marry and spend your whole life with that person, then you need to like talking and be comfortable with them. Looks will fade and you'll grow old, but a companion for life is the most important.

btw that lady that won't take even a part-time job should meet the back of my hand. The least she could do is win her own spending money.
