LOL, I'd try to avoid eating male fish juice... Anyway, does it have any health benefits? If it does then maybe, just maybe I'll try it...

But then again, if you find it's fine to eat fish roe then shirako should be an o-kay too.

But then agian, I'm not so sure. DX

I'll eat anything, animal, mineral, vegetable? This information does not matter to me.

What does matter is the texture, Roe was 'different' the first time around, but I love it now.

    so...why not!

Straight down the throat without savoring the taste. It turns to liquid as soon as it hits your mouth anyway. Chase it down with seaweed (depending where you buy it from).
Seriously though, the ONLY bad thing about it is 'thinking' about what it is.
It does make a difference which fish juice you try too and its seasonal - makes it all that much special :)

Fish roe maybe, but definitely not that! During the earlier days in Taiwan, my wife's grandma used to tell my wife when she was a little child to eat rooster's similar of Shirako, telling her that it is good for young girls. Not knowing what that is, thinking that it is some meat of the chicken, she ate the whole plate. When she was older and found out what that really is, she totally stop. Do adults used to "trick" you into eating strange stuff when you were younger?

Ah... a fine example of how presentation has a big role on how we taste food.

Apart from your plain usual sashimi, I'm not too confortable on tasting raw seafood... or anything raw at all.

Has something to do with a time when I ate some rotten seafood and spent a week in hell.

Funny thing is, though that IS sperm... it's fish sperm.
Yet, we tend to relate it to human sperm, and then here comes the GROSS.

Anyways, I'm betting it's kinda tasteless. Tastes like water or something.

Kinda when I ate shrimp sashimi. No taste at all. But I didn't like it anyways.

Kinda funny... I can force myself to eat some weird stuff... but when it's liquid, or slimy... then it gets pretty hard. Like, I could try some ants, scorpions and other crunchy insects. But stuff like larvae or Shirako... that would be hard.

There are exceptions though. I tasted nato once. Didn't like it, but wasn't as bad as I thought.

Uuggh.. I might try to taste this simply for the sake of having already tasting it once, but I doubt that I will like it..

Anyway, strange thing that the next thing closest to sperm (the ovum) is not as "weird" to us.. I am talking about fish eggs that's usually eaten with sushi, I think.

We serve it at the restaurant I work at. Shirako agedashi. Lightly fried (tenpura) with ten-tsuyu sprinkled with kizami nori, negi, and shouga. It smells very bad!!

My boss told me to try it and told me it was "cod milt"/sperm afterwards. I thought his english translation was wrong....but it wasn't lol.

It has a really nice milky texture and doesnt taste so bad, but I'm never eating it again. LOL

I generally can't stand food that splatters in your mouth once you've liberated the liquid/semi liquid part from the more solid "shell" (Obviously, both parts are edible... And no, nothing ero here!). When this happens to me, I generally want to puke as a reflex (but restrain myself, hopefully)...

So shirako would be a definite no-no and the fact that it's "male fish's love juice"... *Shivers*

Fish sperm? a sac full of it? No. A tiny sprinkle of it over my udon? No. Knowingly dining in the same room as someone who's eating it? Not a chance. That's pretty serious coming from a guy who's snacked on goat's head.

In fact this is now the thing that I'm going to say that I'd rather eat when I want to set up a comparison. "Visit your cousins in Newark? I'd rather eat shirako. ...with a big spoon and no taco sauce."

I'm memorizing this word carefully just in case anyone ever offers it to me.

Funny isn't it--fish eggs are fair game, but fish sperm is somehow repulsive. I'm the first to admit that I don't want to be "fish-gay".

Well it can't be that bad, considering that fish roe is excellent. I would give it a try had I the chance. Although admittedly the thought does have me a little squeamish.

Though some old Japanese men like the smell....

I've had it only fried. It's pretty good. I guess it depends on the fish you take the shirako from... the ones I ate weren't that big...
what can I say? never say never n_n
