The Bay Area is generally friendly. Oakland is not a good place in the Bay Area though. You pull off this stunt there, chances are that they'll look at you funny or worse, you may end up being mugged and being dead for good.

Hilarious video. As to your questions:

Over-generalizing badly, I find people in the West Coast cities of the US (with the exception of LA) to be more friendly than the people of the East (who, to me, come off as being very aggressive). The people in the South and the Midwest are very warm once you get to know them but tend be suspicious of strangers. Portland is a pretty open city. A friend of mine from LA was astonished when a driver waved his hand in apology when he accidentally cut him. That would never happen in LA. Some of the warmest hospitality I've enjoyed from strangers was in a working class area of Chicago.

My reaction would be to try to bend my back, holding my arms apart a la Neo in the Matrix. But that will probably only end in my great embarrassment in subsequent back pain.

It depends a lot on where in the east coast you are. People on the actual coast can be pretty mean, but about 100 miles inland, people are actually very nice. I had a few bad experiences in LA, so I can't be sure as to how most people are further west. :)

Yeah, the west coast is usually pretty chill about stuff like this, and if you're lucky, they'll play along. Sadly, as a former resident of downtown, I'd have to agree with you about LA.

But I'd do it. Seriously, I would. I should spend more time in osaka whenever I get to go to Japan again.

If I encountered the gun thing in Japan, then I would likely fall like the guy at 1:49, except I would fall backwards (at least if I realised what went on quick enough). At the ground I would shoot back :D

It wouldn't be any fun here. The issue here is that some people actually do shoot each other at the street here taking the fun out of the prank.

Did they try the same thing in Tokyo?

Last time I was in Japan I spent one week in Tokyo, one week in Osaka, and one week in Shikoku. I found that things in Tokyo were generally more overwhelming and impersonal. While I was in Osaka I had a great night out drinking in the Dotonbori area. Despite my lack of Japanese skills I had a great time chilling with the locals who were quite friendly. But maybe I just didn't have a similar experience in Tokyo?...

If you want to stay cheap in Osaka I would suggest the Shin-Imamiya, Kamagaski area. This is the Day-Labourers district and even though it's kind of sad and seedy, there's a ton of cheap places to stay and it's still quite friendly. Plus, Spa-World is just down the street!

The New York stereotype: pushy, snobby, always in a rush, and always talking about business. According to a friend from California, the New York stereotype: simply asshole.

New Yorkers are definitely friendly if you approach them at the right time. For example, if you ask someone for directions, they might even lead you for a bit if it's in the same direction. I think anybody living in the tristate area knows this. However, when I was working in California, it seemed like the people there were generally too friendly. Kind of creeped me out when I first started there. On a road trip to the south, I was met with the famous Southern Hospitality. Again, their friendliness was a little bit too extreme. Geez, I may be from out of state, but you don't have to go and tell me all your secret places to eat and the best neighborhoods.

hahaha totally priceless, especially if it wasn`t staged.
If you`d pull that over here in Amsterdam, people would most likely go "WTH ?" but seeing as Amsterdam is filled with tourists, the younger tourists might just go along.

As far as friendlyness per region goes, I think the people down in the East (i.e not big cities) are more "accesible" in general but your mileage always varies (along with just how good your own socialism skills are ?) since people do mention Tokyoites being less accesible however my experience was that during my stay in Tokyo the only time I went out clubbing alone was the first night, after which I had a few numbers to call upon the second night of going out.

Will definitly hit up more cities than Tokyo and Yokohama next time I`m around seeing as I only had like 10 days when I went.

i think openness from people outside of Tokyo is due to a closer bonding between their regionality. in tokyo because its such a large city congregating so many ppl from many different areas, its hard to relate yourself to people without stating where you came from originally. so in effect makes people alot less open. there is kind people but its more in the neighbourhoods, but when it comes to the everyday walking along the street kindness, its not so... plentiful
