I don't have that much homework, but I do have to study almost 4 hours every weekday. Usually do it in the college library where you can fall asleep for an hour or two if you're tired. It's almost always better to be away from home when studying unless you have incredible will power.

id do my homework in a maid cafe...wait a minute...the maid would b the homework...

I admit i was always bad . . . i did hardly study for anything after i turned 16 and that was the time when i got my first PC and internet.
(oh what a coincidence...)

So i would think it's really better to not be at home were also these tempting "hobbies" lure on your precious study time. ^o^

Ohh and i would prefer a Starbucks, i used to end up a lot in a bookstore which had a build-in Starbucks, i bought the books and went to get a hot chocolate and read them there. :)

hmmm... homework, its been so long since I had those so I don't really remember anymore, however I often see students with a ton of books studing in coffee shops like starbucks. sometimes I'd even chance upon some having loud arguments and discussions on topics they are studing about.

I always do homework/study for exams at home and after a good nap (can't work properly otherwise, as I am rather nocturnal and my head and body complain otherwise).

I tended to be "Last Minute guy" some years ago, but give myself some sufficient delay to study material three times (At first, a light read, then a full learning and a final revision the eve of the exam).
As for assignments, I still have to learn how to force myself (depends on the degree of bother the work implies).

This is how I work, and I'm sure this formula wouldn't function for many.

This seems to be a phenomenon in Singapore as well, though probably not as well-established as in Japan.

I'm mostly nocturnal and prefer studying at night, and it's hard to find 24-hr fast food places (not all Macs outlets are 24/7) so I usually end up studying at home or in the school dormitory.

Maybe it's in my blood, but I used to do that all the time as well, but mostly in cafeteria settings even when it was quite a bit noisier than a library for example.

I actually think the still-quiet of libraries are a bit disconcerting. Is it an asian thing? I don't know.

On average last semester about 4 hours a day of homework. I tend to study in my dorm room if it is quiet; if not I book it in the library or find a vacant engineering lab.

Away from home is good. A GOOD study better helps also. Except the only to get space here is to go work in a library. Restaurants and cafes here are too small... Bummer.

Most singaporean students get more than 7 hours worth of homework every now and then, it would certainly be weird if some student gets less than 7 hours worth of homework in a week tho (Either they're lucky, or they're simply lying about it =__=).

Getting away from the computer is important, but what if you need your computer to do work lol? Then the "dark side" comes along and tells you, "Move your clicker to the ero folder, yes, the dark side grows stronger in you"

Very common here in US too (or at least here in california where I am)

Ahhh homeworks.. haven't got one in 8 months.. However, back then I used to get 7+ hours of homework per week.

As for me, I have never been able to work on my homeworks outside of my room. It's habit I guess..

this kind of studying is pretty common here...especially around college campuses...college libraries and campus restaurants are popular spots for studying more so the library since they have comfy cushion benches for the weary to rest before the next class or for the much needed nap...

I'm getting around 10 hours or so of homeworks a week =.=; and now I'm rushing over my holidays assignments before Christmas/school-reopen.

I'll try to use my spare time between lessons to finish chips and bits of homeworks, and the rest I 'll just do at home(it's homework after all!).

I only go for group studying in restaurants. If I do homework in restaurants with friends, I'll end up chatting and nothing will be done =/

I tend to do this too, but I don't go to any particular fastfood or restaurant. I just go where I want to dine and study at the same time! Though I do hold a higher preference for restaurants with pasta and Italian food, so I go to those places more often.

Poll needs revision. With the majority of votes above 7+ hours, I wonder if they are all like, 50 hours, or just 8-9. I guessed 8, then day there was no option.

i study at Dennys a lot. because if i stay at home its more computer games and mroe computer games.

My French friend at uni likes to study in Mc Donalds because she can smoke there (we can't in our flats as they're owned by the stuffy uni) and also it's free heating (which is bloody expensive, as I'm sure you'll know!)

I prefer to study in my free periods at uni in the gaijin office where people who are/like guijins tend to hang out. That way, there's always a friendly person to help me out.

That's strange, no one in Singapore's mentioned about this one yet...

People in the East region in my country adopt a different strategy.

We take advantage of a quiet vast area with air-con and free wi-fi and a spectacular view of an aircraft berthing/loading bay, at none other than Changi Airport.

it's the same over here in singapore, students like to stay in fast food restaurants but not at those crowded/noisy ones like in the mall.

and also at the airport as it is very very quiet there.

when i was a student i studied in my neighbourhood McDonalds as well or at the school library.

i cannot study at home as they are too many distractions. when i see my bed, i feel like sleeping, when i see my manga i feel like reading them. >_<

lastly i preferred to study alone as well. i find it when a bunch of friends study together, we usually go off-topic and ended up chit chatting. >_<

Very much the same thing here in Malaysia. I know one Burger King restaurant that I always pass by which always have students working on their homework, often till' midnight.

Well if not for the education system, we will not have people studying at fast-food outlets, airports, etc. ain't it?

I mostly do my homework at home or in college library or computer room, cause it involves reports and programmimg.

I usually study at home. I actually study most efficiently when listening to music and exchanging the occasional comment on msn (not to mention a cup of tea). That way I don't get desperately bored.

Personally, I can't focus at home. Just having the computer so close to me...
So I choose to take the train to go to the university it takes me 1 hour to go and 13 minutes more for the metro. But at least I know I'll be studying 2 hours a day... Sometimes it's hard to focus in the train too with noisy guys but most of the time it's ok.

I don't study nor do homework at home since the PC is all I care.. (I'd die not facing the pc). I do it at school, copy classmate's/ coursemate's homeworks.

I can't vote because I don't go to school, thus don't have that kind of homework.

I try to do my homework anywhere I can, mostly at work or on the bus/train, since free time is something I usually don't have much of...

stupid school never give me homework,

if they does, u have to do it in a group, and it is not studying, its like drama, novel, story of something, which is junk and nothing learn from that

or maybe they give us, but its a piece of sheet, i can finish it on my own in 3 hour or far less.

Whenever I make homework (not very often) I do it at home (since I only make my homework on Sundays)...and always on the floor (don't ask me why).

well i'm home from college at 3pm after that i review whatever we did for the day(2hours) plus i do homework(2hours) before they're due soo... that would around 4 hours.
i go to Starbucks when my parents are home they watch TV a lot when they get home and when they're not around i stay in my room

it look like all us bloggers(net surfer) prefer to stay in the room than going outside eh ^^

I do alot of HW, rather than last year I used to slack alot, now that I'm trying to get in to a University... I'm trying real hard! I pefer doing my HW home or at school rather than going to resutrants, seems awkward O_o

I hardly ever get homeworks (not sure why though as all my friends keep complaining that they get too much). when I do though I do it on bed, a cosy and relaxing place.

When I was in school, I tried my best to stay at school for around 4 hours since I can hardly be productive at home :p

As a teacher, I do not condone studying in noisy areas. No matter how one might try to convince me, quiet area, open, with adequate temperature is a perfect setting for maximum retention. Now if one must distant themselves from an intrusive family, then yes, I can see studying in a public place.

When I'm usually in a study group, we head down to the Starbucks on campus. Makes sense to me...

I rarely do homework right now, I'm just to lazy and my school is pissing me off like it never did before...
When I study at home I usually put on some good songs and lie on my bed, it works best for me.

Back in my school/university days, I usually tries to finish my assignment in between classes when the next teacher is yet to arrive. Bringing it back to the dorm is not a good idea as the PC is seductive >_

And i fully under stand how a pc and tv can be distracting I cant study in my room Ive though about going out to study.

Manhattan has only one Barnes & Noble bookstore that has enough cafe space (they try to discourage use as a shelter for homeless). But, that Chelsea (6th Av & 20 thSt) location looks very much like your photo.
Because that B&N is near Fashion Institute of Technology, I can hear Japanese as I study my Japanese. I've ripped audio from text CDs to my music player so I can use store copies of the texts and so not have to carry that weight.
A change of scenery is essential; if I stay at home I'll always get pulled into my main PC.

i never did my homework or much studying when i was a student. it's a miracle i manages to get my diploma. lol. gosh i missed those schooling days.('~')

I don't have homework per se, but I'm always trying to learn new things. Art and music have always been of particular interest, as well as physics (QM especially) and technology.

I can understand that trend.
It's impossible to do something like that in Brazil, because McD's are usually too noisy here.
Also, the atmosphere is completely different... it's way more a smelly fast food filled with children, cheap tables and chairs and not confortable at all rather than McDs in Japan... where you have some nice chairs and tables, silent ambients and such to study.

Not so similar, but I also go out of the box to study. My house is not noisy at all... but the movement on the street in front of my house, even though it's not that noisy, still bugs me.

So I just study after hours... like 1am to 4am (weekends).
Not very good for my health, but I became accostumed to it on my university... where I had to go longs hours of studying. 7 hours a day some times.

I'm use to seeing this when I lived in Florida. I have never really understood how students could study in bookstores and cafes. However I could entertain the thought if I lived in Japan...

Mind you, I'm strange when it comes to study. If a place doesn't feel right, I'm just not going to get anything done. When I first went to college, the libraries where great places for study.

Now that I have returned to college again, I remember why I was glad to finish the first time. ^o^ I can't and wouldn't study in the library here. I always try to remind myself that this place is more like a junior college than a four year university where I was in my younger days. Students are not serious when it comes to study here...

I've heard many fellow student complain that their computer is a big distraction. I guess I'm luck not to have that problem. ^^; However it should be a distraction, I always have several around me. Oh well, like I said, I'm a little odd when it comes to study. ^^;

This time I do a lot of my studying at home. I'm comfortable and have everything near me. Although, being a language major means you study all the time and everywhere.

Studying hotspots in Spore back-dates to at least 15 years ago. Back then, the most popular choice would be at the Changi airport's viewing gallery or its fast food restaurants, which will be closed by midnight. Away from home means distraction from the temptation of TV, PC, video games, mangas, nagging mum... and a very important reason... the air-con.

The airport, back then, allows 24hrs access, a viewing gallery of planes landing and taking off, lots of flat ground to catch a quick nap. Of course, there will be bad apples who would sneak off to a quiet corner to make out (and beyond). Its popularity led to a studying lounge being built, and taken down later. There were increasing problems such as disputes and hanky panky.

In the past, studying in the public library is discouraged. So, fast-food restaurants will be a next popular choice. The noise can be drowned with the blast of the walkman. Of course, with the latest coffee drinking trends such as Starbucks, the students are now spoilt with choice.

Sights of students in fast-food restaurants are a common sight, especially nearing the exam period. Of course, restaurant managers will be pressed to discourage students during peak hours, as customers have trouble looking for a table for meals.

lets just say 7+ is a bit low to say as it is ^_^;

We have libraries in every suburb here in addition to school and university libraries so it's not like there's no space to study. I usually study in between classes and a bit at night. Working makes it a tad harder.

ha, I live in res and yes I can't help get distracted by computers every 10 minutes or so....
it's really frustrating and i know it's not right but there are just so many things I want to constantly check on my computer (in psychology they call it variable ratio intermittent reinforcement and it's where addiction occurs......)
But I'm far too lazy to go to libraries to study.....

hahah...ever since I was in high school up till I graduated college I always do my homework hours or minutes before the deadline (depends upon the length of work that needs to be done). ^^ procrastination is my best friend...the results are 95% always better than me doing them ahead of time. heheh. no idea why though.

I spend every waking day of my life in front of the computer or in school. We get tons of homework everyday and group projects every week. I swear I'm going to be dead before I start saving lives (pre-med student)..

So yeah if we can't go home because of group work and stuff we usually study in restaurants and coffee shops. Easy access to everything: internet, food, library, and last minute consultations with professors.

does doing homework inside fast food joints help a lot? i mean... if you're distracted because of the computer.. you'll get distracted too because of the food... and besides.. when i was studying... if i hang out on restaurants... i like to look at girls passing by.. ehehehehe

Won't mind hanging out at a restaurant just to look at the Japanese senior high/high school girls (Cute/Hot ones preferably) ^^;

I hate homework so it's very rare that I actually spend time doing them.

We used to do our homework in Starbucks and other cafes too when I was in college (which was last year). I still see underclassmen do that.

i usually go to the library because it's cooler there and quieter. when i get bored on my homework, i just walk around and checkout the books. going to mcdonalds or starbucks is way to distracting not too mention expensive for me.

For me, the school is the best place. quiet, not to mention the presence of peer pressure...

back in college i used to have classes only for 4 days. but i often hang out at the starbucks near our campus even on my 1 rest day which is most often than not a wednesday. that's where i usually would do my studying. my friends followed suit after. :)

It's all about distractions. At home I have all my stuff (manga, dvds, figurines, pc full of crap) to play with, plus my bed and a fridge with food. I NEVER get any homework done at home, so I rather finish quickly in the library and come home so I can relax.

Im thinking that looks more like Excelsior cafe.... They make good frozen slushy type drinks

when I was in school, I was majoring in industrial design. at the time I lived in a studio apt about 4 blocks from where I went to school. at home my place was full of figures, computer, gaming, etc, and I always found it really hard to concentrate on anything work related. The studio for my dept was open till midnight every night, so after I got out of class, i would just go up to the studio and knock out whatever it was I needed to do, from reading to physical labour projects. I found it alot easier to concentrate, even if it was really noisy.

I'm only seen in school time trying to copy homework at the speed of light. ^^;;;

I did absolutely no homework in high school. Still maintained a good average.. until senior year.

Homework? In high school, there was homeroom and in college, what's .05 of your overall grade? The only time I really fretted about an out-of-class assignment was when I had either a large paper to turn in or a presentation to make and both of those things I did at home because there were far too many distractions anywhere else.

Technically I get no homework at all, but I'm pushing around 5 hours of studying per day on average (2-3 if I got labs, none on Fridays, and up to 8 on weekends, and I never study in my dorm.

Over here, fast food places are quite noisy and it's usually jocks that hang around there. That and I think you get kicked out if you're just there wasting space.

When I was in school, we hardly ever got homework.

used to put in more than 4 hrs of study everyday. so thats about 30-36 hrs of study a week at home. unfortunately most of my marks were average.

now learning japanese i get hardly 3-4 hours a week. trying to learn some at work too in my free time instead of browsing the web. can read hiragana and katakana but unfortunately i cant understand the meanings.
i need a dictionary real bad. also cant make out where one word stops and the other starts.
wonder which dictionary to get for beginners. also i hardly know any kanji except for nos 1-10 and some very commonly used ones like hito/jin, hon, mizu, etc.

This is my last semester...just a few courses left to do, not each course gives homework

It's pretty common here in Seattle for students to study in coffee shops. I've never seen it at other restaurants though.

I used to get 7+ hours of homework in one night. yay for a strict 5th grade teacher who robbed me of a year of my life.

We don't have much homework at my school. But, when we get a big homework I do it at home, if I don't happen to forget about it which isn't unusual. And when we get a small homework, I do it during break before the lesson.

I do all my studying/homework at home. It is nice, quiet, and comfy.

I always study at home or at my dorms. In college dorms, there are also study lounges. In high school though, if you can't study at home the first choice for me is probably the library. Second choice used to be Starbucks where I could drink things and study.

When I help people with homework or doing tutoring it's usually at a Starbucks .

It's not that uncommon to see someone study in a restaurant here. Probably not to the extent of the Japanese but i do see groups of highschool or college kids studying.

I always do my homework at home. That's mostly because the majority of homework I get is for my VC classes, so I need *my* computer with the programs I need, and *my* art supplies for any analog stuff. And I'd actually have less space in a restaurant. I needs my desk space, dude.

I'm doing my homework mostly at home.
But I rather would want to do it more at school.
On the evenings it is a little bit noisy at home but then I put my headphones in my ears helping me to concentrate and work in peace.

During my year in Japan, I had noticed that this was common practice to a lot of customers, be it homework or conducting professional business, students and business people alike, all seemed to take advantage and the liberty to use such premises as a second home or meeting room beyond the companies' own "business model". I know for a fact, that this kind of activity in any fast food chain or any consumer related eatery in UK and HK would be higly frowned upon, and in most cases you will be asked to leave not neccessarily by staff themselves, but one fustarated and irate customer waiting for a seat. I do wonder how businesses survive in Japan, where people can go in, purchase the cheapest item on the menu, and then spend hours on end seated on the premises and abuse it's facilities. I would have thought businesses like this, would highly depend on turnover, and surely anyone occupying the space more than 'x' amount of time, would be detrimental to the business?!

I will normally study at fast food chains like mos burger... the rice burger at the end of each study session really cheers you up, though i gained quite a lot of weight from that =.=|||

When the place gets too noisy i will just plug in and play songs from my iPod =3

Studying in McDonalds.....that's something I haven't heard of before.

I had a good amount of homework first 2 years of high school and then the last two years I had barely any on account of I only took 3 academic classes my junior year and 2 academic classes my senior year, the rest of my day was spent learning welding at a nearby vo-tech school.

Actually, studying in somewhere else than home near the computer (and dannychoo.com:P) is a good way to get things done. I frequently go to the university a few hours before the lessons (or stay there between the lessons) and study, getting a lot more done than at home.

i did my homework when wake up at 4 am.

definitely #5 since i be in Australia - Summer has been a killer so far. Though today is strangely cooler

I would agree with the whole computer being a distraction thing-except maybe not ero most of the time.
I mostly waste about an hour and a half looking at webcomics, checking email, watching youtube, checking email, and (I have to say out of honesty) visiting DC.

It's very quiet in my dorm room...ever since my roomie left which isn't so bad, but I like the public, slightly-noisy places. I the type that likes having others around

I would find it hard to study in one of this places. For some reason they give the perfect atmosphere for falling asleep.

For me...hmmm I'd probably be around...+10 hrs per week, for the JLPT that is.

I don't really have homework anymore. Well, not the graded kind anyways. But I always enjoyed doing homework in my room. It was always quiet and my family left me alone. If it got too loud, I would just put on those noise-canceling headphones. ^^

Here in the Philippines you won't see much people or students doing such.
They'd rather flirt in the said places with their boyfriends or girlfriends.

I always do my homework at home never been outside to study nor do homework but I did do school projects outside with my friends. Maybe I'll find a day and try it. Sometimes I can finish the homework that teacher gave me I can finish it at the school without bring it back home.

When the fast food joint is usually the only one close by, students flock to them to hang out. Some study while others flirt or just loiter there for the free air conditioning.
But for cafes (like Startbucks) here its a different story. Being a cafe here is a statement that you can afford what the establishment is selling. It is more of a social statement really. However, if it is near a college/university, you will tend find so many people using the place for study especially the law students. Else where the fact being there as a social statement will greatly apply.

In here you cant do your homework in Mc or another fast meal restaurants unless you buy your foood and in big quantities with all your friends

My workload was always really light. The secret to this at my school was to take accelerated or advanced versions of every class that offered it. While the pace was quicker and it was assumed you would grasp some concepts faster, the advantage was the teachers don't give nightly menial tasks like textbook style homework. To me this made perfect sense and i loved having less homework! Senior year there was an increase in writing so that meant more time spent researching and thinking, but still no tedious homework. Repetition is an important part of mastery, but there is a limit to its' usefulness i think, and that is when group focused work and general discussions of ideas and material comes in!

Outside that environment it was the same old story of bad attitudes and know-it-alls who waste the teachers time and do us a service by cutting class everyday. Don't get me wrong i skipped school to the maximum allowed limit was nearing, and i smoked, drank, and did many questionable things. But my appearance at school didn't betray any of this, and my double-life per say, never interfered with my learning.

It's also quite a common sight in Singapore.. especially during the examination period. It's so bad that KFC, McDonalds and Burger King put up notices forbidding homework/studies during peak hours. Because us hungry people can't get seats, and students are hogging tables meant for 4 people all for themselves and their piles of homework >.<

I am currently at Manchester Met Uni and I have plenty of work and reports to do and presentations and not enough hours in the day. I hardley get any sleep. Uni 3 days a week 9am -5pm I then have to work over the weekends so not enough hours to do work so I stay up all night and just drink tea,coffee,have snacks and finish work. Have 4 reports and a programming assignment to hand in before christmas :9

Well, if in home is noisy, just spank them !

i've been doing homework since i first found this great site. I'm thinking 05' ;)

I'm in the International Baccalaureate program in my school, so I consequentially have TONS of homework every night. I don't mind doing so much homework, but the real problem I have with most of it is that it's almost always busy work. With the exception of German class, Art, and most of English, all my other classes give the students tons of busy work a night.
In response to where I do my homework, it is usually at my house, either on my desk or on my bed. Sometimes I need to do a study group thing so I can better understand certain concepts, etc., so I go to other people's houses for that. But most of the time, my friends have study groups at my house, just because I have a mah-jong set and I got everyone in love with it. :D

I study at Tim Horton's. It's a canadian coffee/donut franchise. Stuff is much cheaper than starbucks.

for me it depends. if i'm at school during a spare or something i go to the library (quiet floor if i need to get stuff done, talking floor if i'm just casually studying). otherwise i'm at home

I see students clog up fast-food restaurants, like Macs, KFCs, BKs, etc and Starbucks as well, during the exam period. Right now I'll be one of them to mug for my JLPT coming this Sunday X_x

I'd say that I spend about 1 hour a day on homework. Only places I do homework are inside my room and on campus (library or computer lab).

I'd love to say that I'm done with homework but, since the kid's now in college, I'm starting to consider going back to school.

I despise homework.

I don't study anymore since entering college. Even in high school, it was the bare minimum.

Tried to study at a McDonalds once with my friend. Wasn't very successful as we ended up talking and eating.
Personally I study better at home. I set myself a target ie finish studying 2 chapters before I go play.

I mainly do it somewhere at school either outside somewhere or in the library/computer room.

Of course there are places like Starbucks and other cafe like places to go to, but it seems more of a distraction for me to do homework or study there.

I cannot remember how much that we were given to do, but I know that I did not bother with doing any. I just had no real academic interests when I was at school, and no goals that I wanted to achieve. So I had nothing to push me to do any.
It is different now, I am back at college next year and plan and doing all which is asked and then more, to be more prepared for the next day

You're testing my memory as school was a loooong time ago. I know I got a lot more homework than I actually did, but I somehow still got through with okay grades for most subjects.

After I finished school and I was doing self-study though, I was more willing to work, as it was more for me and not for the teacher!!

People working or studying in Starbucks is a very common thing in Hong Kong. I think I've even seen some in the UK too.

I hate when there is too much work to do. Normally I do ok as a full time student (and I mean full time), but the last week has been hell.
Saturday: spent time on campus coding and writing report from 10 to 20
Sunday: writing on a report at home
Monday: finish the report. Was at campus from 10 to 6 (that's 20 hours!). Dropped the report in the mailbox so it was there at the deadline at start of normal office hours and went home to sleep.
Tuesday: attended lecture at 13 O'clock. Wrote on the next report afterwards until I felt too sleepy.
Wednesday: worked on the report until midnight
Thursday: attended lecture at 9 O'clock. Handed in the report and went though hell at administration figuring out dates for exams. Went home totally wasted and opened DC (this is present time while writing this).

I didn't start late on the assignments/reports. Most students failed to finish everything and somebody complained that we got too much to do in too little time... go figure. (it is somewhat abnormal with that workload... the student union would really have complained otherwise).

It's actually very interesting that paid workers aren't allowed to be ordered to work that much by their bosses, but it's ok to work students this hard... life ain't fair :(

I see that a lot now in Starbucks in Sydney CBD. I tend to do it too now. You focus and you're not distracted by things at home like the internet ... xP

I remember seeing a lot of people doing this while I was in Japan. I don't see this often here so I was quite surprised. I should start doing that now because at home I get distracted and don't do as much homework or studying as I should. -_-
