    I get slightly more than what the University student in the survey gets ^^;

But 60 USD for a college final year student?! Kinda low I think.

I get about 200 CDN pocket money each month from my parents. But most of my living expenses come from the money I save from work during the summer. University is also a money vacuum, you wouldn't believe how much textbooks and tuition is...and I heard its going to go up again next year. stupid stupid government....

I would make them do chores, and depending on if they did the chores, did them well, and so on, I would pay them based on that. This way they arent just handed money, and they have to understand the value of hard work. My parents had a lot of money, but if I wanted a dollar from my parents, I had to go work for it. If I needed five dollars, I could wash one of their cars. I remember packing seafood at my dads work into boxes in a huge freezer at age 8 so I could make a couple bucks. They didnt buy me a car, I leased one at 16, they didnt pay for any of my expenses except school and only then if I got a B average. At 22 I bought my own house from saving money, and make a decent living. I dont think I would have appreciated anything as much if my parents didnt make me work for it.. for myself.

A lack of personal spending money builds character. By the time a child lives through a childhood of "poverty", watching all his/her friends go out and buy stuff with money their parents gave them, and they reach the legal working age, they will have the vigor and motivation to earn their keep. All that's left at that point is to teach money management.

I agree. Maybe not always, but more often than not, One of the guys I used to work with in the Navy grew up with a dresser drawer as a crib, and the like. His single mom later married some rich doctor who invented some cancer procedure and now he has blown 80 grand into his S2000. But at the same time, he has done his research, etc. He may be able to spend money easily now, but he does not throw it away. He may spend it on a passion others think is a waste, but he does his research and wastes none of it. he does not go out to clubs and buy 500 bucks worth of drinks, etc...

I both agree and disagree with you.

If a child lacks money then they either do as you say or they go "everybody else are some rich bastards. I want to spend like them whenever I have the chance". It's my impression that the latter is more common :(

You can't reverse it either. Once the school decided to make a survey of pocket money in my classa and the result was that I got twice the amount of the group of guys who got the 2nd highest amount (I was the only one getting that amount). It didn't help on the bullying problem that the school decided to tell that to the class >.<

I did learn the value of money though. Unlike most students I will rather go without the unneeded luxury stuff than borrowing money. This means that I will actually be able to get my master degree without having any debt even though the pocket money stopped when I entered the university. And no, it wasn't because I had a moneybin when I started. I just didn't go to cinemas, cafes, bars... you get the idea. (however I fear for my fellow student's understanding of the value of money... or lack hereof)

I guess the conclusion is that learning the value of money isn't directly linked to pocket money. I think the mentality of the parents is at least as important.

Giving pocket money involves trust and responsibility...
If the child thinks it is free money to spend on whatever goes through his/her mind, it is fruitless.

On the contrary, the ultimate goal is to save and learn about spending money in a wise way. At least it's how I have learned things and must be much different for many.

Let's say I have learned the true value of things and people and I'm glad for it.

I think it's a good idea to sort of limit how much pocket money you give your kids. It makes them value things like earning their own, saving money, etc. Especially here in Japan where there are so many places and so many things to spend money on.

"College" in the UK means something like... 11'th/12'th grade for US schools...

    Basically your AP's.

In the UK, they take A-Levels...

IB, isn't that an international curriculum devised by the French?

Advanced Placement classes (AP) is suggested but not mandatory for US 11th/12th grade students. US have different state education standards for students below university/college level. For New York State, they have regents examination, a state wide exams on various subjects that you have to pass to graduate from high school.AP classes would count toward college/university credit instead, giving you more advantage when applying. However, a student without AP can still get into a standard 4 year university/college. In fact many US high school does not offer AP classes.

I think this equation would be more appropriate:
      A-Level = US High School + ACT/SAT standardized college-entry test
      O-Level = US Junior High/Middle School
IB = K-12 Courses designed for international schools.

There really is something wrong with my parents since they don't give limit to my pocket money.

They'd just give me around 40 USD initially and then they'd give me more if I used that up.

But I have never asked for more than 114 USD of pocket money before, since everything is dirt cheap here.

The answer to the question though Danny... depends on what you conscider "pocket money"...

    right..?

I know I used to receive more than 12,000 yen/month in highschool... but it would include things like transport etc... sometimes I'd use it to help buy stuff if my parents needed me to do some grocery shopping etc.

And through this, I guess I learned more monetary responsibility... as... it encompassed more than just "self spending money"

now, I'm in Uni in the UK... and I get FAR more for "allowance"... but this also includes money for cooking food, phone bills, competitions...

Next year it'll expand to rent... internet, water, gas... electricity... everything.

so yeah... You can't really "teach" someone how to be financially responsible by limiting the amount of money... you've got to be flexible to the situation... of course, there are limits. But yeah.

Well, I'm a highschool student, and most of my own things came from my own cash. However, lately, I've been too preoccupied with school to work, and so; resort to pocket money. Event though, I never try to swindle loads of cash from my parents and try to stay a little smart with it. Generally speaking, not including the money I have made, my parents give me usually anywhere from $40-60 out of their pocket maybe each month? Sometimes less, just depends on whether or not weekends are filled with studying or hanging out at a friends house.

    as a general rule, 100~120 yen = 1 USD.

1 yen = 1 cent... give or take a bit.

Just divide any value you see of yen by about 100/110/120 and you have a very approximate value of it in USD.

Half that yet again, and now you have the value in Pounds.

I continued receiving money in the first years of Secondary School, but after that I started to work.

I think I got 5 bucks in secondary, more when I got into polytechnic :P It is most just to get some food in break time... Thankfully for side jobs (illustration related) for other savings (woot!)

Seems like us singaporeans are getting more pocket money than average compared to other people. But I do not feel it is alot. Spending on our meals and transport is about it with a little left for saving. Is singapore cost of living actually considered high?

I was working part-time at McDs by my Junior year of High School and have been on my own since after graduation. My folks are always there should I hit a major financial snafu (like loss of employment) but for the most part I've taken care of my own expenses for the last five or six years. Allowance from my family when I did recieve it was rarely more than 10-20 USD and that was in return for doing work around the house (stacking/moving firewood, raking leaves, etc).

I would probably give $5 a month when they're young, but only if the do chores. They will get all of their "candy" from me, as I will be the one buying the candy and eating it lol. When they become teenagers then $50 sounds good, as long as grades are kept up. When they become university students then their "allowance" becomes tuition money lol. But thats a while from now as I am a university student myself ^^.

I got my pocket money depending on my school grades.
So when i had a test and scored a 1 ( 100%) then i got 50DM (bout 25euros) which was the max. A lower grade would result in less money.
    Then again we had like 3-4 Tests every two weeks and sadly not every test ended up with 100%. ^o^;

I don't plan to have kids, i would be a horrible mother with my anime and internet addiction. xD

I've not had pocket money since I was out of highschool. The highest I ever got was probably about £10 a week? Got my first proper job at CEX in Leeds at 18 nearly 4 years ago, and then quit there and moved to Japan in 2005 and have been pretty much self-sufficient since then (with a whole host of mad money making schemes along the way!). It seems like an age has passed since the days of pocket money!

When I have kids off in the future, I guess a decent secondary school pocket money would be about £5 or if it is still in Japan, around 1000 yen per week.

wow that's really small. i thought japanese kids are showered with money because when you look at their valuables clothes, accessories, models, toys, etc they got top brand stuff. or i guess they save up and stuff. hmm you learn somethign new everyday.

anyways when i have kids i think $100 a month should be enough. i grew up not getting alot of money or getting alot of the stuff i wanted, but nowadays everything's pretty expensive and kids need to eat. haha

i use to get 10SGD for the first 3 years of primary school. From primary 4 - 6 i got like 16SGD , that makes out to $0.80/day. But that will depends on what the money is used for. Don't have bento habits so the money is used for food. Transport and books are covered by another funding.

16SGD = roughly 11USD. so i fell below the survey level ^^;;. But it does help me learn to spend within my means and at the same time force me to learn how to save money if i want to get anything else.

I used to give my kids $10 a week if they did chores, and I got so tired of having to remind them of doing them all the time. Now I'm unemployed and have no money to give them at all so they get nothing. I hope this instills in them a little appreciation for the value of money.

My parents don't give me any allowances. Maybe only up to primary school they gave me pocket money. But after that they don't. Basically if I have anything I want to buy I'd just ask them. I'm not such a big spender (more to stingy, I think). But I kind of wished my parents limit my allowance and so I'd have the urge to work part time to earn money for myself.

If my kid still wanted pocket money at college and university age I'd tell him to stuff it where the sun don't shine. Once you are of college and university age you can get a job. I think it teaches young adults better responsibility and financial management if they get a job to earn money once they are able.

Some kids never learn the value of money and jobs because they've never had to know because their parents always spoiled them with pocket money, but once they get a job and get into the 'real world' they don't know what to do with themselves. They end up with credit cards, debts, overdrafts and struggling to make ends meet because they just don't know the value of money and just spend spend spend frivolously until its all gone, then they're up the creek without a paddle and end up crying on the parents shoulder. *Yes I do know people like this*

oh and before and it wasn't until I was 13 that I starte d receiving money from my parents. But that was actually a $2 a day for buying lunch at school. I often turned into an allowance by either skipping lunch or just spending half of it on something like nachos.

I don't think kids should get money after high school. In fact, during high school they are perfectly able to get a job themselves, therefor there's no reason to give them extra money. If they don't learn the value of money through working they'll be relying on you to bail them out when they can't make bills and rent and run up debts.

I have had to work part time at a job for my money and have been working ever since Grade 11. In high school I used to work about 12 hours a week, so I'd have a good 100+ a week to spend on random stuff... around 1st year Univ, i cut down my hours to around 5 a week so I only got about 50 a week to spend on stuff.. I've moved up to around 10 now in third year university. It is tough, but it's a learning experience of the real world, I pay my own tuition and textbooks as well (but that primarily is covered by scholarships).

I get paid twice a month at my library gig. The first is usually around $40 and the second about $60 or $70. All of that goes to film and photo paper so the only time I actually have pocket money is my birthday and Christmas (which are both this month ^^). As far as receiving money from my parents and giving money to my hypothetical children it all depends on how hard they work at school and at home.

I used to get about $10/month back in primary school. The main purpose was money management. It stopped once I got to Grade 7. The bulk of the money that I get is from red pocket money on Chinese New Year, which I have to make last the year.

I think I'd probably do something similar to my kids. Allowances are mainly to learn money management. When you're old enough to get a part-time job, it's an experience that everyone needs to go through. Besides, you usually treasure money more when you worked hard for it.

Well, I just get only 15USD a month only from my parent. Maybe in the future I will ask for more.

I stopped getting pocket money when I was 15. If you're too lazy to get a paper round or odd job at 15, you don't deserve money. Even uni students can get McDonalds jobs to earn a bit of cash.

When I was about 10-12 I used to get about £2-3 a week pocket money, which went up to £5 a week until I was 15. Saving for SNES games was a big job, but it felt amazing when I could finally buy DKC3 for £60 (US$120ish at the time) on the day it came out! Yes, thats what SNES games cost here back in the 90s =D
