Oh I love Calpis water! My friend in Japan made me reluctantly try it. After the first taste its all I ever drank in Japan. Love the Calpis, must have the Calpis. I was also surprised cream soda is yellow/green in Asia where its pink in N. America. Anyhow, I can buy Calpico water here now, but it cost alot. Like $9 for 2L, and yes I do buy it occasionally.

Here, our 7-11 are stacked with pop, energy drinks, ice tea, water, and fruit juice. Not one Japanese drink in the bunch =(

But do you want the honest truth?
      Of course you do!
It's actually just grape juice with aloe pulps/pieces. (Read the ingredients)

it feels like everything in japan is 40 min away... damn tourist shows...

regarding the drinks however, its almost exciting how much sunshine of happiness can brighten my break by trying out new drinks (i am a drinka', but nothing with alcohol though, no bull)

but i guess it would only be fun and good if the drinks always tasted good...

A lot of varieties here, but I don't really like most of them since I feel that they're overly sweet. I prefer japanase drinks since most have the right amount of sweetness to them for my taste.

For a while now, my favorite drink in hte states would be vitamin water. So addicting

We've got a decent amount of drinks over here. One in particular that's gaining popularity and is making soda makers shake in their knees is flavored green/white tea drinks. I like the apple flavored one in particular!

So you like Sarsi danny? There are tons of that stuff in here. Still not as popular as Coke or Pepsi but it's there. Personally though I don't really like it but my mom and younger brother loves it to death.....

I was a melon soda addict. I never drank ony of those enegry drinks, or anything that didn't seem obvious [green teas, sodas, coffees] because I was never sure if any of them had illegal aditives in them. I remember being told not to drink certain things when I was in "indoc" because some teas sold in stores contained opiates or something like that. But anyways, I never tried any of those funky branded ones, even stayed away from those "energy +" drinks. *shrug*

Are those freebies a new trend Danny? I don't remember seeing those when I went to Japan (early 2006).
And I was all over those machines and drinks. Tasted as many different stuff as I could (in 25 days).

We have only the basic here. There are no cream sodas, no hot beverages, very few types of tea (and usually bad ones), and machines are for soft drinks only.... and they are kinda hard to find.

One thing that I liked a lot was the machines selling hot drinks. I went to Japan in March... it was still kind cold but not too cold.

We had the luck to visit Fuji-san with the clearest view in years, and also watch the cherry blosson... Hanami... also the best one in some years, specially around the Imperial Palace.

How can I resist not going back there after such things... T_T

However instead of a lot of Japanese drinks, we get an abundance of Korean and Chinese drinks. There is a Japanese shop down the street thats terribly overpriced, but I'll investigate soon ^^

While I was in Japan, I was kinda suprised than I could not find any sparkling water (natural one) except in Carrefour supermarket.
Don't japanese like this kind of water?

Not much a variety here where I am. I can pick up a few of my Japanese favorites, but they are expensive. Some how they just don't taste as good as when I'm in Japan. ^^

It's easy to forget vending machines here in the states. They are big red boxes with Coca Cola logos on them. ^^; No one makes vending machines like the Japanese.

I enjoy Root Beer too. I don't like the idea of it being hard to find. I need to check out Costco in Osaka next time to see if they carry Barqs Root Beer.

We have the standard coke or pepsi machine over here. I loved the vending machines when I went to Japan, for they were always helpful in the humid climate. I did run out of 100 yen coins quickly though lol, as there was a vending machine in the hotel I stayed at. My favorite drink would have to be the mango juice drink with Snoopy on the label and bottle cap, what a great combo ^^.

I did a project about different drinks web sites around the world and found Japan is a great place to find all kind of different drinks even from the companies like Coca Cola. In USA we don't have that many drinks, though each big chain store has its very own brand of drinks that you can buy for much cheaper then leading drinks and they taste in times even better hehee.

Tofu milk is not "tau fu fa"~ (I would know, since I speak and live Cantonese and drink it daily)
Lets all correct the this issue once and for all.

The Tofu Milk that Danny was talking about is most likely Soy Milk (or Soy Bean Milk).
This is actually not a dairy product, but it's called "milk" because of the color and texture of it. The Soy Milk is actually made from Soy bean. It's actually very healthy and not a laxative. (if it works for you lerry[maru], I'm guessing it's fairly unique. Since I drink it daily for 10+ years)

As for the "Tau Fu Fa" this is actually "Tofu pudding" is a desert product made with Soy Bean as well. Fresh Soy milk and Tofu pudding are fairly common to be sold in the same place, since they could be made with same Soy Bean.

Additional readings if you are interested.

There are some great drinks in Japan.

There are some AWFUL drinks in the US. That's because sugar tariffs and corn subsidies have resulted in artificially expensive sugar and artificially inexpensive corn... which has resulted in almost all soft drinks here being made with "high fructose corn syrup". That stuff is AWFUL, and I don't drink the sodas in the US, for the most part. On the rare occasion I have a soda, it's either "organic", "gourmet", or imported.

I imported some Ramune recently... I was appalled to find out that it had high fructose corn syrup, too!! That's very sad.

We have calpico here in Thailand. They used to have the soda version too but i guess it wasn't selling to well and become dimissed from the market. Danny, have u ever try mangosteen juice? A bit bitter but taste great on a hot day. One thing though, having many different drinks in Japan does that mean many companies trying to compete each other for newer taste? Won't that mean adding weird thing in drink to spice it up?

Variety of soft drinks in Shanghai is not bad. Besides your common carbonated sodas, there are different types of tea drinks. Japanese beverage companies have bottling plants all over China, therefore green tea, Oolong tea, milk tea and lemon tea are all very common. On top of this you have traditional Chinese Herbal tea drinks (涼茶) which is increasingly popular. Some Chinese beverage companies attempted to launch different cola drinks to compete against Coke and Pepsi without much success.

Many department stores in Shanghai sell beverages imported from Japan. Needless to say they are expensive. However, with so many Japanese ex-pats living in Shanghai, there is always a demand.

One of my favorite drink from a vending machine in Japan is the cream corn soup. Vending machines in Japan have both hot and cold drinks, and the usual hot drinks are canned coffee. Cream Corn soup usually comes in the same size of coffee can (250 ml), and basically it is what it is - creamy soup with lots of corn bits. Although it is quite fattening, this little can of soup does warm you up in winter time.

I'm thirsty now. Since it's Christmas, I have been drinking a lot of Egg Nog. But they don't have root beer in most of Japan? That's one of my favorite drinks, so that could be a problem.

Nah... just like 6 different types of soft drinks and a whole bunch of cheap-ass awful tasting rip-offs.

I remember my trip to USA in 95/97, and the recent trip to Japan couple of years ago... all those beverage machines... I almost went crazy.
    I just love them!
I tried tasting everything I could... so many of them.

I love the green teas in Japan.
Rarely I can find some store which imports them to Brazil, and I buy immediately.

Also, cold coffee and stuff. Love them!

I miss Dr. Pepper a lot... since there's nothing close to it in Brazil.

o__o" From what I've heard, that Soy Milk = Chest Development was based on the fact that soy beans contain estrogen, and that it would 1) Increase bust development, and 2) Swing guys the other way. |: The amount of estrogen in soybeans is minimal or something like that but my piano teacher says that they just help growth development in general, not concentrating @ at a certain part ;D

I drink a lot of Coca-Cola (I think I should cut back actually...) but there are a lot of different drinks here. Its mostly just energy drinks or variations of Gatorade (like a million of them.) Theres also all the basic sodas, Coke, Mt. Dew, 7Up, etc.

A shop at the mall about 40 mins away stocks Ramune. Id never heard of it before so I tried it. Its ok but Ill stick with my coke. I also tried a different flavor at the AX 08.

Related note 1: I tried Coke and Wine today during Christmas dinner (Merry Christmas to everyone here BTW!) It didnt taste too much like Coke... I RARELY drink alcohol (what with being underage and all.)

Related note 2: I just read an H doujin called Cola Flavored Sister. I guess soft drinks are extra popular today. :D

There are not so much soft drinks in Italy. Just the standard Coke, Fanta (Lemon and orange), Sprite, and tonic water (soda). And naturally, ice tea (but green is rare in pubs/bars), energy drinks and Gatorade like-drinks. Very popular is Chinotto, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinotto but I think it is not well-known in other countries. Instead, we are very refined about alcoholic drinks.

@Alexeon a Coke and wine cocktail? OMG! NO!!! Try Rum & Coke! :D
To have a good digestion, my favorite is Jäger Tonic (Tonic Water + Jägermeister, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A4germeister )

I liked Calpis cause you can keep it outside and it won't spoil. Tastes better at room temp too.
I'm guessing soda in Japan uses real sugar rather than corn syrup.
Also started making my own Iced coffee here. Apparently its just really cold regular coffee. Imagine that.

Fanta Grape is my favourite in Japan.
We have Fanta Casis here in .nl, but it is just not the same.

The cold coffee-milk drinks are quite good to, and some are now avaiable over there.
[Although not the same brands, of course]

Strangely I assoicate certain drinks with certain periods of my life.
For instance, Cherry Coke is associated with my teens in the 80s, so drinking it is a nostalgia fest.

In .nl there is a sour tasting buttermilk drink called "Karnemelk" that is as aquired a taste as natto.
And as it is looks just like milk, and is stocked next to milk, unsuspecting tourists or expats can get quite a shock.

I have to go to japan to get some moar of that Purple Fanta. We had it for a few weeks in Australia and I became addicted enough to go to another state and look for it in a mall for about an hour.

I love Aloe Vera drink, it's one of the few 'exotic' drinks we have over here. Tastes a bit like jelly.
