I hate sleeping more than 5 hours. Makes me feel like I'm wasting time. I try to sta up as much as possible, though school stress has led me to longer sleep lately.

I often get by with 6 hours of sleep as well, although if what you heard about sleeping less meant dying early is true. I'd have to start getting my full 8 hours. ^^ no sense in punishing oneself to make money if one can't taste the fruit of ones labor by dying. ^^

I was sleeping around 5 hours a night up until a week ago. I'm too young to do that anymore. ^^; All I wanted to do was sleep during the day and my performance sucked. Also I wasn't such a wonderful person to work with... ^^; I can have a really short and quick temper.

Now I'm getting about 6 hours and I find I wake earlier and I'm starting to get more done. My performance is better since my mind is well rested. I also been getting more play time. ^o^ You know, the harder you work the harder you need to play.

Longevity runs on both sides of my family. Men also look younger than their age. No I wouldn't sacrifice years to get more done by sleeping less. I have so much I want to do! I plan to be alive for a long time. After all, I have such a wonderful woman to spend the future with.

Yeah, I've got about the same schedule, midnight to 5-6am. However, nightly sleep isn't the only factor to consider.

While I sleep 5-6 hours, my technical position isn't the most stressful either. So I don't feel dead-tired or feel like I've shortened my life span... In fact, during the dot-com crash, I tried high-pay, high-competition and high-anxiety in Real Estate. But after two successful home transactions, I knew the stress wasn't for me or my health.

Plus nowadays, running the treadmill nightly also helps to balance my heart, mind and body! =)

A human should get 10 hours of sleep which will then tell the body to start repairing itself while you rest and allow for memory to store itself within your mind, according to some psychologist. So sleep will allow you to heal and help with memory, so its good to study for a test little by little over a period of days so it can store itself within your mind rather than cramming the night before. I know this but I sleep about 8 hours a night, need to get up early and leave for school the next day; on weekends I sleep less though.

I sleep about 6 hours per night, basically because work (9-18), college (19-23) and transit time take most of my time. I sleep a lot on weekends, but as the week goes by I increasingly start to feel like human shit.
Since I can't get anything done right while deprived of sleep, I wouldn't trade life span to spend more time awake.

If I don´t get 8 hours of sleep a day I get sleepy all day long. Also, it´s cumulative.
Meaning if I don´t get 8 hours of sleep several days in a week, chances are I´ll spend my weekend sleeping to recover.

I know this because I had an year sleeping only 6 hours on weekdays... and then, on weekends I would do nothing but sleep.

I guess this is different for each and everyone... there´s not a standard for everyone.

Some people can fully recover with half and hour of sleep. Quick naps for me just makes me more sleepy. My eyes will go red, I´ll have pains all over my body, sometimes headaches, and my brain just won´t work if I don´t sleep well.

That´s why I´m kinda afraid to move to Japan... I want to go with some adequate job for me already in mind.

Only good thing for me is, when I´m on a whim, I can go like 2 or 3 days without sleep and without feeling too bad. But of course after that, I´ll end up sleeping 16hrs straight (already did some times).

But I love sleeping. Can´t deny.

I try to get 8 hrs a night otherwise I get very tired around lunch time. But the more important thing then time is quality of sleep right now I am getting about 9hrs a night but because I am not sleeping where I normally do I am not sleeping as well (getting tired around 6pm or so.)

If I was only getting 6 hrs like some of you I would not be a very good person to be around. I am very grumpy it I don't get enough sleep.

I need at least a *consistent* eight hours to function properly, possibly nine or ten at times to be at my best. I never get it, though! Most of the time I'm lucky to catch up with one full night a week and a nap tucked in somewhere during the weekend.

When I get less than that regularly, I'm a zombie. If I get much less than that at all, I get sick. I'm pretty much always a sick zombie.

My primary roadblock between me and more sleep isn't having too much to do, it's having a very picky body clock. My body likes to sleep from early morning to late morning (at what should be my bedtime, my body starts to wake up, but even if I can get to sleep before then, I won't rest until later), yet my present employment requires me to wake up in the early morning, ensuring that I never get the sleep I need. Even worse, waking up at that hour (no matter how much sleep I've had) throws some kind of switch in my body that makes me ill. Daylight saving time makes it worse! I used to take solace in the fact that I at least had several hours each evening before I can sleep to put to good use, but after years of this I'm too much of a zombie at that point in the day to even watch TV with that time, much less code.

I do have my goals that drive me, though. I won't be in this job very long, and I'll be making my own way in the world. It's a bit of a catch 22 (I need to manage my own time to have the time/energy to build my business, yet until I build my business I can't manage my own time), but I'll conquer it soon enough. Your own success serves as a constant reminder that my goals are attainable, and I must thank you for it.

(Side note: When submitting my post after following the post comment link from Google's RSS reader, it asked me to re-enter the captcha (which I entered correctly before, I can see), and the text of my comment had all the quotation marks escaped with backslashes. i always had this discussion with my colleagues at work.

they said that the best time to sleep is 11pm to 4am. cos thats the time ur body regenerates and repairs.

for those thinking that 4 hrs of sleep is enuff, u'll partly right. a chinese philosopher said that 4 hrs of sleep is gd for ur mind. means u get refresh easily. but it's harmful for ur body in the long run..

of cos, 8 hrs is the optimal sleeping time. if u get less than that, i suggest u to take a nap during work. 20 min the maximum. google up "afternoon naps" to get the full report on the adventages of afternoon naps.

    just wondering...
if we calculate the total time between the people that get enough sleep until they die minus people that sleep less until they die, are they working hours same ? or they have more working hours (for people that have enough sleep)?

if they working hours same, that mean you get longer life for sleeping

anyway as human, yeah we need sleep, either u want it or not,
lately i play gameonline and that reduce my sleep time by around 3 hours and its effect my health, recently i got cold easily....

Generally these days, I get 5 hrs of sleep at night, with a 1~2 hr nap after i get back from work, so 6~7 hrs a day. Any less and I really start to struggle later on in the week, as I discovered when I went a week with only 4~5 hrs a day.

It has come to a point in my life that sleep is amongst the most important things to me. Without sleep our physical and mental state does not function properly. On average, a person is suppose to get 8 to 9 hours of sleep (this may be a lot of time for many of you). Of-course not many people actually do that. I try to get as close to that recommended amount as possible.

Also, and this shouldn't be hard to believe, lack of sleep leads to an increase in headaches and stress. This increase can lead to panic attacks and possibly the cause of a shooting in a public area around noon (people deal with stress differently

"People aged between 45 and 49 got the least amount of sleep, with the average standing at 7 hours, 5 minutes a night. Next was a group of people aged between 40 and 44, who got an average of 7 hours, night minutes sleep each night.

Sleeping the longest was the group of people aged 85 or over, who got 9 hours, 47 minutes of shut-eye on average." - Japan Probe

    Err, are you kidding me?

I'm 13, a tenth grade student, and sleep approx 4 hours on a school night, 7 hours, if lucky, on the weekends (of course, entertainment is also a factor I can't put down). Do the Japanese have to get 8 hours of sleep to live through the day or something? The stress they're experiencing is NOT EVEN CLOSE to college-bound students in the US in 2007.

Also, isn't it scientifically proven that older people sleep fewer hours...? I wonder why the elderly sleep so much in Japan...

And why is this causing billions of $ loss in Japan? If workers are getting less sleep, doesn't that mean they're WORKING MORE for their company? Shouldn't Jp companies be making MORE money?

It depends if I have school or not, if I have school I mostly sleep 3 to 5 hours (and mostly sleep a bit after school). But if I don't have school or if it's weekend I sleep for 10 to 12 hours. ^^

I have a sleeping disorder that makes my body need at least 10 hours of sleep to function properly. I usually sleep about 14 hours.

    It sucks. >.>

I generally average 3-4 hours of sleep per night. This has not varied very much since the latter half of grade school. I'm 27 now.

Between a severe case of insomnia, a serious caffeine addiction, a highly-stressed lifestyle (I live where I can afford, which makes for 1-2 hour commutes), a 45-50-hour/week job, a girlfriend, and a very high value in family (who lives 45 minutes from home), I hardly ever stop.

The only time I really sleep more than 4.5 hours is when I'm sick, which generally happens once a year during Flu season.

I sleep 8h hours during the week and probably 9/ 10 during the weekend.

But sometimes I go on a 96 hours spree, not sleeping at all and I work work work. No coffee or extra help. It actually makes me feel great, that and sleeping more then 10 hours XD

The question about less sleep = less time, I think it is the same, since the more we sleep the less of life we get. So in the end, it goes side by side almost.

well in mexico in some states have a nap time like monterrey or guadalajara, the do this cause there's hours in the day where the heat is really high so it's better sleep than be dead for the heat. I usually sleep 6-7 hours when i was in school that time was shorter like 4 hours and i hate that i love sleep (^. ^;)

Depends on if I'm doing Army stuff or not. If I am I can usually depend on no to four hours of sleep over a three week AT. Zero is while on something like ammo pad duty where millions of dollars worth of munitions are signed by me, four is my average in garrison after those officer meetings. Thank you college for teaching me how to work for days without sleep! While relaxing, I usually get something like five to eight hours. When sick I can usually go for fifteen hours.

It depend on what I am doing. I still remember that during my live at collage I have the less time of sleep. The longest record I haven sleep is 3 day in a row and on the 4th day I slept like hell wake up on the 6th day. Really on the 3rd day I felt like I am a walking zombie. No I don't want to experience it anymore. Usually on the weekend I will sleep more like 8 to 9 hours but on the normal day 5 hours is more than enough.
