They cost quite a bit and I figure I get more exercise by walking. I'm also a bit absentminded when walking. I'd hate to run over some kittens or something.

they have police police on segways here in new england, its kinda funny since they have blinking lights on the front on some hanging bag, but for the price of a segway i rather just buy me a stormtrooper suit (my helmet just came in ^.^, time to mod the paint scheme) and some more ram for my little macbook. me want leopard to run smoother then with just 1gb

The campus police in my University just acquired patrol segways this past week! Laughter ensued as the student body looks on.

Actually segways seem more flexible than bikes, horses (yes, we get horse patrols here too), and obviously patrol cars. They give you a little bit of height, don't take up as much space, and don't require too much of a charging time. Of course, if the police just walked they would be less fat too, haha...

Segways lol, interesting concept but I believe criminals can still outrun it. They should be given golf carts, you can suupe it up and make it go a nice 20 kmh.

So when a criminal like runs up a flight of stairs...what exactly would the segway police do? Would be funny if they just gave up and decided it wasn't worth chasing them down.

I guess the other possibility is that the po po don't get tired out from walking and are ready to hunt down criminals. However, if that is the case then how would they leave their segways? In any case, I am sure a video of like a squad of cops on segways chasing down suspects would be pretty interesting. Especially if they do it like in action movies with tons of jumps and stuff. I gotta wonder too if police would shoot while chasing down criminals on segways.

Once you caught up to the criminal what would you do? You can't really just jump off the Segway and arrest the guy because the Segway will fall over and get sll banged up.

Obviously they didn't put much thought into this. :S

Danny, it would be great to see troopers segwaying down the halls of the death star. Lol, or engaging in a joust like battle. Next they will have exo-frames with a bunch of lights and attachments for these police. How do you say Robo-cop in Japanese?

Segways are forbiden in Japan? Wow, that kinda amazes me... in a country were people will almost run over you with bicicles, and in a country that could really use alternative means of transportation (I´ve seen some heavy traffic in Tokyo)...
Anyways, aren´t segways slow as hell? But I understand... the guy uses it so he can cover a wider area without having to run all day long.

But in a police chase, isn´t it just faster to get off the segway and run?

Surely, it would be faster to run to catch a criminal than riding a segway! Plus, it would be kinda hard to take a security guard seriously if he was riding one.

    Lol Segway's.
I remember my first experience with them was in California, I was visiting an Adobe corporate office and the security guard was riding a Segqay and he was going pretty fast.
For those that don't know, you have to lean foward a little on these things to go faster. Well as he was going fast he crossed over a speed bump and nearly face planted the concrete.
Best memory of new technology (back then) ever.

Just exactly how fast do these things go anyway? Honestly, I wouldn't prefer riding this to catch a criminal, they could easily pawn you when riding this thing as it limits body movements when you ride this.

ROFL Segways? As if cops weren't taken serious already over there, riding around on bikes. Crime would decrease, but only because the criminal would look at the cops on those things and fall to the ground laughing.

I took a Segway tour in Disney's EPCOT on my last trip. I can't say that I broke any speed records on it and took a bit to get used to it. There were quite a few fender benders on that tour.
I can just imagine a Segway fitted with a siren and some flashers....I can't imagine you'ld catch anyone unless they modified it to increase the speed.

Segways are gaining a lot of use here in the US, but not by normal everyday folk. They're gaining a lot of use by security gaurds for malls, campuses, and other large facilities. Haven't seen any police officers on them yet, but I wouldn't be surprised when I do.
