I believe some males don't want to share some negative feelings to their wives and have a secret female confidents via instant messaging or e-mail or have pictures of other women (mistresses? female high-schoolers or even more underage girls/boys?? eroge characters???), or have certain fetishes that they would never disclose to anyone (pride again).

As for women, maybe they hide stuff like frozen meals and other prepared food that would show their lack of skill in the kitchen.

Those are just hypotheses. But why would they hide those more fiercely than their PIN numbers? I wonder.

Nothing is more important than your savings. By a few strokes from someone that spied on you, you can have the savings of a lifetime disappear in a flash (see previous post on scam). So yeah, I am much more cautious about it.

D_Blade, I think this is because if you lose the money from your account, people (friends, family, girl friend) wont look at you weird like you did something wrong. However.. if its say.. bukkake and candy girl photos, you might get odd looks from some people. So, its more of an embarassment thing. As home many people would rather run around for two minutes naked, or pay a $100 fine. The fine would be picked the most I surmise.

Hm, this poll is gonna be a little one sided...

Of course your money and pin details are the most secretive thing! No one wants their cash stolen!

    Mine would be computer after that, but i dont have anything to hide - well - except from certain people... ^.^;

Good point DRAGUN, however this was not a real question, more something that spooks me out. Personal pride over money... So they prefer to end broke (and have a chance to die in the streets) than to have some secret revealed and be shunned.

I wonder if they answered "Computer" first because the idea of immediate threat to their bank account is generally underestimated.

I don't know... "Modern" societies should be more tolerant so this kind of things would never occur (hiding yourself rather than expressing your tastes -if of course the latter are compatible to standard morals-).

here are my top three (3) things that i want to be kept a secret (in no particular order)

    * PIN codes to my finances

    * Computer - i've got a lot of "confidential" files on my PC (both business and personal if you know what i mean)

    * Mobile phone - i've got friends who wants their contact numbers confidential and only to be known to a chosen few and i don't want to break their trust. i also have some "personal" pictures if you know what i mean ^__^

AndyH, thank you. I, sadly enough, feel the same way. Social embarassment is just ingrained into my brain as absolutely horrible. Its hard to get rid of.

D_Blade, I think this mostly has to do with the religion thing in the West. We tend to think of sex, and being naked as "evil". It has taken us a very long time to be as open minded as we are about nudity and sexuality, but I admit that even I quiet down when saying words like sex. I think its just a social stigma that has been around for so long its almost steeped in tradition. One of the reasons I respect the Japanese culture is that they dont seem to have this problem. Maybe we all just need to grow up and stop being children?

Monetary passwords and stuff are obviously something no one wants others to see... so I voted my computer, since one would probably be able to get into my accounts if they got into my computer.
Only problem is: They would have to cut my finger off for the fingerprint reader, and then crack my 13 digit password which has a mix of numbers, characters and special chars.

But I'm not that much worried about bank accounts and stuff... I mean, I am worried but not paranoid about that.

Thing is: I HATE people messing with my laptop. Not because of pr0n, H stuff and other things that might scare the big Jesus out of some people (I admitely have lots of those here).
For me it's all about configuration. Dunno, but I just like to be shure that when I turn my computer on, I'll find it in the same conditions I left it the other day.
After I adopted that idea, nevermore I had problems with spyware, virus, etc etc.

When you spend as much time as I do on the internet you tend to amass a great deal of content that would shock and appall a normal person, but you also grow to not really care what other people think of it.

since we are on the topic on privacy, it reminds me of a case we had in singapore last year.

a 17 years old girl lost her mobile phone which contains a 10 mins clip of her having sex with her boyfriend.

very soon the video go uploaded onto the internet and spread like wildfire.

compared to computers, i find that mobile phones are more easily misplaced and thus lots of personal stuffs are leaked out and might be misused.

never ever lose your phones guys.

DRAGUN, the thing is that Japan may be too open towards sex, on the contrary.

Fetishes, Ero games, doujinshi and so on... they are quite explicit, convey strong messages but are circulating quite freely.

In the US, they would simply be seen as a sign of the devil, shown to everyone and burned at the stake for example (...just kidding on that part).

More seriously, religious groups in certain country are scary sometimes, given the power of censorship they have, even if that can impede on freedom of choice.

I guess it's about two extremes, one too open, the other too conservative.
