As a student I don't earn anything since my parents money is my money and I only ask when I need it, the only money I get is on birthday and christmas. Normally both work and manage the money together, the womens don't stay at home anymore which is good on one side and bad on the other (for some people). I like the idea of having my woman working and not be dependent on my money, so if anything were to happen to me she would still have her job as support.

Normally I'd get around $1000 a month during the summer, but less than $500 during the school year.
But as a cafeteria worker in the school, worst job ever, i'm still pretty happy. Unlike my co-workers... I'm a work 1-hour, sleep 2-hours, get payed 3-hours lucky guy. Awesome- yet no girl >.

Damn the fig rocks! My wife's an accountant, so she does the sums and tells me how much is needed for the home, expenses, investment plans and the like. The balance I get to use to maintain my toy gallery.

I get around 300 to 400 US dollars a month as "go wild" money which I commonly save (I am frugal about my spending).

I am taking out a loan for college and part of the expenses will be whatever I need/want to buy ^^. The more I buy though, the more I will end up paying back, plus interest!

Strange, I thought the older generation received more payment as they gathered more years under their belt, probably the younger generation has more "technical jobs" that pay more, who knows. Where I live, generally the man is the "money-maker" but many wives have jobs as well and both do the accounting work.

Both my wife and I work. But we do 'pool our money' in a shared account with all the regular expenses drawn from here. We then each receive an equal part in two Visa accounts pr. month. If we then need something for the house, like a new TV - we draw from the 'pool'.

That's how I'm taught too. My wife-to-be manages the money while I go out working for it. There is of course more pocket money and more control of "raises" because I own two companies...so I'm the one who states if I want a raise. Back in my 9-5, I felt like a slave to the call of a mindless boss. Also, pocket money was rather small if any because Uncle Sam took all of the extra and my boss complained that he had no money so I couldn't make anymore money with a raise or overtime pay.

Like many Japanese ladies, my wife handles our money. We've been married for 12 years now and we rarely argue about money these days.

A few years ago we created two new bank accounts. His, Hers, Ours. We decided that 15% of our respective paychecks would go into our individual accounts as our "spending money" That money would cover hobby money, clothing, eating out, and other individual spending. Since then our debts have pretty much disappeared because there is normally plenty of money in the joint account to pay down debt. Now we're saving money for a future adoption and an upgrade to a new house.

The method of dividing up our money also means that my wife is contributing and equal share of her money to the family. There is never an argument over who is pulling their fair share of the load.

Since I took a new job, back in June, that 15% means I've got a pretty good amount of spending money ;)

Could you clear something up for me danny. Is that amount you posted the wage of an average salaryman or is that the amount allocated for him to spend (salary minus the expenses and etc)?

It's hard to find a high paying job especially when you're just starting to work and don't have that much experience. Before I changed jobs I used to get $100 max for pocket money since the pay was kinda small. But now I'm happy to say I get to spend around $300 or more on hobby stuff. XD Most of the stuff I buy tends to be quite expensive. heheh! Good thing the gf doesn't complain. We like the same things (figures, anime, games and more). Expensive hobby really. ^^ We both have our own accounts + a shared account in the bank and we deposit a portion of the total amount we earn the entire year into our shared account for future use. :D

Danny is definitely talking about the amount of spending money that the salaryman receives out of the household income. Annual income in Japan is based on millions of yen-- and the monthly amounts Danny mentioned are about half a million per year.

Wow... I *REALLY* don't like the whole idea of the "stay home wife"...no matter what country or background you're from. A Woman shouldn't have to rely on their husbands for money, I believe a woman has just a right to be in the workplace as men. Relying on someone else is just ASKING for trouble.. what if you get divorced? The man still has a freaking job, but what about the ex-wifey? All broke and no where to go.

As awesome as Japan is, there are quite a few down sides..

i'm lucky enough to manage my own money so all of it is "pocket money" :)
I think it's not a bad thing that the housewife manages the money. Woman are way better and more serious with money than most of the men.
But it only works if you can fully trust your wife or gf... ;)

Don't think my fiancee will reduce me to pocket money status. ^^ Right now she doesn't mind what I spend, but I do hear it if she thinks an item is to expensive. You know what I mean by "hear". ^^; No no, we don't argue about money.

I have no problem letting her handle finances. She is an accountant so I have no worries.

This was a really interesting post for me-- especially since I will very soon marry into a Japanese family, and my fiancee and I really want to move (back) to Japan. I, myself, am a "salaryman," but my fiancee works full time too. We currently manage our own individual spending money, but we own our own home together and share the expenses for it. Since I do quite well in my career, my fiancee does not really *need* to work, and when we move to Japan, it might be possible that she will assume the role of "housewife." It's up to her, though. I certainly would not mind if she took over the management of the household income; there would not be any need for there to be limits on my spending. Figures, manga, CDs, food and drugs (coffee, cigarettes and sometimes alcohol) is where my spending money goes.

I have never seen one of those ni-sen-en notes, they look kool! I LOVE the figure, too!

Over here its becoming more and more necessary for both partners to work, some even two jobs just to make ends meat. From the looks of it American economy is collapsing, several bank chains are closing or being merged into others. There's even been rumor of something called the Amero http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_currency_union . I get almost no pocket money, being on social security my life is very frugal. I survive through the generosity of kind folks who upload things on the internet (software, media, etc) legal or otherwise....

The US is in a recession, a pretty bad one. A collapse would not only bring down the US economy but ripple out into the European and Asian markets as well, which has already been seen this month with the sudden stock drops affecting international markets and forcing some governments to cut interest rates.

I make a decent amount for a starting job ontop of being a student. Depending on where you live here and your area of interests you can make due by yourself even in deep economic troubles.

I don't have a fixed ammount, but my mother trusts me to not spend too much.
I'm past the time I should be working already, but that's another story.

Things in Brazil are kinda similar (man working, woman taking care of house/kids/accounts).
    But things are changing.

My mother did take some years of that... taking care of me while my father was working.
She also did work before I came to this world. :P

But after some years... I can't remember exactly when but I was still a kid, she decided to go back to work. Which was, I guess, the right choice!

Today, she's already retired, but still working... not because she needs to, but because she know it's best for her. I wish I can follow her example when the time comes...

My parents do the same thing. My dad works and my mom manages the bills and stuff. My dad can buy pretty much anything as far as food or whatever goes but he cant say spend $500 on a new tool without talking to my mom.

I have a job as a store clerk so I get my own money and as long as I pay a few bills here and there and dont owe anyone anything, I can buy whatever I want online or off. In fact, as soon as I pay back a few things, Ill be getting an Xbox 360 so I can enjoy its RPG lineup.

I work to live and I live to work... my hobbies are so expensive and my parents can't give me nothing for this. So I work, 5/6 days at weeks, every week. Not bad, so with my own income I can buy what I need.

Scattered Trust of Highly Motivated Employee

It is known there are many hidden obstacles on the way to success in business. One chooses to overcome them legally going through thick and thin, others prefer to speculate upon a fraud scheme to tear out some money. For instance, the Russian Federation allows the latter to prosper and not to be accused of their heinous deeds since the Russian legislation is used selectively and corruption has become a norm of life.
Mitsubishi Corporation LT, Inc. [MCLogi Singapore] & Toshiba Group Companies official representatives in Russian Federation are having great financial, customs and taxes problems caused by the cases of money laundering schemes and frauds affairs with broken units (already covered by insurance companies) supply from Finland Kouvola warehouse to retail chains MediaMarkt and Auchan in Russia
In our case, representatives of Toshiba Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation LT, Inc. (http://www.mclogi.com/ ) have been working successfully in partnership for many years in Russia.
Nevertheless, they –Mr. Naohiro Baba and Mr. Koichiro Natsume, had decided to snatch a large sum using Mr. Vadim Danilov and his clients.
Vadim Danilov was convinced by Mr. Baba that he had been registered as an official Toshiba trader – the Ninth Wave operating from the UK. In addition, Mr. Danilov was declared that NANA Eurooppa OY (NANA Europe Ltd.), and NANA Baltic OY were his sub-dealers, as well as all the companies which had been invited by Mr. Danilov to Toshiba’s Conference also become his sub-dealers. So, Mr. Danilov worked hard believing that his current position is a real one and promising future promotions.
To his luck, Mr. Danilov had uncovered the scheme while checking fake invoices and seeing asset misappropriation in bills. As a result, he started finding out the data with Mr. Baba and Mr. Natsume but they preferred to fade away from Russia and kick back Mr. Danilov leaving him in debts.
We should remember Japanese as they always try to use foreign retail chains in their own private purposes.
