Was it not the abolitionist point of view that all men as God's creations were equal and should not enslave each other? He and his party's anti-slavery stance was an impetus for the Civil War.

Just to add to that He was for freeing slaves through, but only so they would rebel in southern states giving the Union an edgexD His original Plan only freed Blacks slaves in the south~ Black slave states in the Union were not forced to free their slaves till after the war was overxD But regardless of purpose its the result that matters in the long runxD~ No point kicking hypocrites that are already long dead... there's enough alive we should be kickingxD

Lincoln wasn't killed over Racism and freeing slaves... he was killed because the south was absolutely massacred when they tried to claim freedom from the north, Cities destroyed, control of state governments lost for years ect ect. Slavery was a VERY VERY small issue in the civil war for the north or south till after the war was actually over during reconstruction... the main issues had to do with Economy, industrialization, government policy, and foreign relationships with Britain and France... we only call it the big freedom of slaves today to put a positive light on killing tons of people for "freedom"xD

Ok... History major me is going to shut up now o.o

Anyways... I won't celebrate just yet..
Not till I see what Obama actually does.
Naturally Economy and pulling out troups in Iraq are big ones...
Hoping he does some Education reform too... but with the way the media reacted to his "spread the wealth" plan as Socialistic I have a feeling he may not get that much support for it =/

Yes, it's true that he wrote the Emancipation to garner support from England and France, and it allowed slavery to continue in states that stayed in the Union, but it was still a huge stepping stone in making the progress we have today.

As for the resistance of support on his policies, well...the Democrats do have controlling power in Congress now. So I think a lot of his policies will pass. Now to test and see if he can succeed. Regardless, this moment is extremely progressive for America as a whole.

We're proud of you, America. For all the things people sometimes say about you, I can't see us having a Indian/Pakistani prime minister or France and Germany having a black president/chancellor. Hopefully you all follow on from this point. I don't think people will mind Americans frequently seeing themselves as the best country in the world if they actually act like it once in a while!

Yeah, he showed up in the final episode of Gundam 00 Season 1 and I rolled my eyes. Amazingly, though, the Japanese seem to have painted him in traditional mistrel-style "blackface." If that had been done in an American-produced animation, there would be marches, demonstrations and riots going on all over the country.

It's not un-American. You should vote if you have a person you support, but you shouldn't vote solely for the sake of voting. But having the ability to choose who your leader will be is a thing that not every country has so I vote.

But then comes after Obama is gone. This doesn't affect Obama winning and all, but I think we won't be able to get out of this debt within the next couple of decades, as long as another president further down doesn't screw it up again.

Well even our right-wing major party is possibly more left-wing that Obama. If you don't like Obama you'll dislike the Tories, hate Labour and absolutely loathe the Lib Dems (those being our 3 mainstream parties). We even have some areas with a Green Party government. Contentious issues like abortion and gay marriage aren't really contentious at all here. None of our politicians have to pretend that they believe in God, either. I think it will be a real revolution when the American president can say "I do not believe in God".

I agree on that last line. I myself am Christian, but I really didn't like how Obama had to fend off rumours that he was Muslim. I can see people wanting to vote for Christians only; America is predominantly Christian and want to be led by the same. I understand that and I actually agree.

Yeah, I agree but what I mean is that here in England, and in fact in most countries outside of the USA and the middle-east, while people wouldn't necessarily vote for an "outside religion", they will always vote for atheists. In fact, it's almost seen in bad taste to bring religion into it because we live in a secular country. In the US too, it's meant to be that the church and state are separate. Our politicians never mention God. If one of them said "God bless Britain!" he'd be laughed out of the room.

As it should be, religion and politics should NEVER be bedfellows. Too many people here (as you'll notice most of the "dissent" posts come from the southern parts of america) vote based on imaginary undead deities, what masses of cells do and commanding a woman on what to do with her own body, and whether the world is going to end in 2012 or not so we'd better ruin the environment in the next 3 years! Of course, not all republicans are like this, but I personally have yet to meet one, young or old, that wasn't in it because they're a gun nut or a religious zealot. (Or following blindly because their parents tell them what to do and they're in their 20's or even 30's, how sad)

The stark contrast between the comments of those across the pond and those that are here are ASTONISHING to me. You could remove the location of every member here and I bet you I could pick out who was from where. I really hope that the ignorant, wandering, cloistered american goes the way of the dinosaur sometime soon, but I fear sometimes that those things are synonymous with BEING american. Here you have someone that made a well thought out, eloquent statement, versus "I hate it for ambiguous reasons, OPINIONATE WITHOUT FACTS". And I'd really like to say that it's an isolated incident, but anywhere and everywhere I read arguments by this "type" or have a verbal argument with this type of person, well I could pretty much have the conversation with myself because I can predict everything they're going to say.

It will be a great day when a man/woman can say they have no religion and still rise to office, but most Americans have religion indoctrined into them at a young age, and many folks reject the study of science, history, and comparative mythology that ultimately reveals the metaphorical not literal nature of all religions.

Whats wrong with no belief in Christianity anyway, its an old outdated religion that shamelessly tries to preserve its own institutions over helping its follows find some deep meaning within themselves. Despite all its beautiful metaphorical insights, its more often used as a means of social control.

You would then be surprised to learn that the Big Bang Theory was first installed and pushed by a Roman Catholic Priest, and that the late Pope John Paul II on behalf of the Vatican accepted evolutionary theory as fact and coinciding with Creationism.

          Institutions of belief have changed.

The problem is that many people both inside and outside of those institutions of belief are still stuck in the past. Whether or not a person is of a faith, regardless of whatever faith it is, they should be open-minded to the past, present, and future.

Understanding cannot progress if one is stuck in a past-oriented mental state.

No, he's close-minded because he's changing his whole lifestyle thanks to election results. He's not changing it because he's been thrown into a devastating situation ie. poverty, he's not changing it because he NEEDS to, he's doing it because the person he supported didn't win. Boo hoo. If everyone who supported McCain walked away from America because Obama won, I can't even imagine the horror of what'll happen next. Economic collapse? Nuclear war? Ultimately, people will only harm the nation by simply giving up, moving out, and not giving Obama even a chance to prove himself.

Mimi's right. I hereby declare this: Those who moved in other countries because Obama won the election and not giving him a chance to prove them wrong in a way that pleases many is VERY IMMATURE!(but not all but not all of those who moved in other countries ofcourse) I mean get over with it! So what if the person they supported did'nt win?! I'm sure McCain accepted his defeat honorably with hope! If McCain is does that, why not his supporters?! Life goes on! Like my wise Nanny in the philippines before said: "Do not look at the past with hate and the future with fear but love and hope this present." sniff....I'm so touched by her statement!

@Koji98: By no means am I forcibly holding him back in America. I am just trying to say that his logic behind his actions do not seem to make sense. Maybe if he could clarify on the details of it, it would be more understandable. But at this point, it just seems like he's basing it off of McCain's loss.

Actually, from reading his post, it seems that he's moving because he disagrees with Obama's policies and stances (and considering he's from Obama's state, I'm guessing he's endured some of his politics, already). I actually support Amiantos' decision in this. If you disagree with the way a country is run (or the way you think it is going to be run), than moving is a good option.

The alternative is staying, complaining, and enduring a miserable life because you don't like your government. Which, looking at things from the standpoint of a free-willed human being, just seems absurd.

@Amiantos: Good luck on your move! Hope you find happiness, elsewhere!

Just like to point out that the majority of McCain supporters don't agree with the Obama's policies either. I don't agree with all of his policies, but I respect him as president and will give him a chance to move this country forward. I'm not saying this with the intention of starting a huge debate. In fact, I'm obligated to apologize for the crude remarks that I made. ^^; I'm bluntly cold, even for a policy debater.

That is not what I meant… don't make assumptions! What I meant was Amiantos was being close-minded about moving out of the country because their candidate did not win and they dislike the policy of the winner. Look to work for uniting the two parties and make this a better country. Make right what the Bush administration has made wrong in the past 8 years. Don't run away from the problems.

The point of the multiple party system is for checks and balances. If we united them (even more than they are now), then that kills the system we have been running all these years.

Actually the party system is designed so that more types of people get represented. The checks and balances are from the three branches of the Federal Government. The Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. These branches exist so no one person or party has complete control over everything. Too bad Democrats have most of the control now. I know the party system is to let different types of people be represented, but that still doesn't change the fact that we shouldn't unite the two parties.

There image of a 2-party system is merely an illusion. Both canidates are funded by the same 10 powerhouse corporations, both canidates were chosen because they only speak of minor reform and subtrle change. They won becaue they wiill keep things the same. Obama like all presidents since Reagen will expand the scale and scope of the Fed, he'll increase our military budget and make military contractors rich, and if need be i fear he;ll pressured into a war with Iran, dspite his own personal beliefs. Read up on who really runs the world not just America. Governments are facade for the corporations and elite who have molded and shaped the course of world events for the last 100 years. THe parties differ just enough to divide people on several minor issues while the overall big picture of establishing an open world economy, and destroying the countries who resist us will always be our number one policy. Thats what we do in America behind the scenes...

Finally, someone who says something different. ^^; I'm looking at the votes and realizing that a large portion of people voted for McCain, but none of them seem to want to speak up. That may be due to most of the online population being young and pro-Obama, but yeah.

That said, I support Obama despite his seeming inexperience, so I'm just wondering which parts of his policies you're opposed to. :P

I'm very happy being from Chicago, Illinois. No, I'm not at Grant Park for the celebration because of the chance of it turning ugly if Obama lost. As the blue collar/middle class worker it actually is beneficial for me having a democrat in office. There is a trend when a Republican takes office that people automatically stop spending.

Agreed. One thing I didn't like about McCain's campaign is that no matter what his supporters did to try and blemish Obama's campaign, he did nothing to deter them or stop them. He never said anything about supporting their actions, but did very little to stop them from what they were doing. And they were doing some fairly aggressive things from what I can remember. And amidst all this hate, Obama did not once attempt to sully his opponent or his supporters, and instead stuck to the issues and his campaign for CHANGE. I am really looking forward to see what he can do for America.

Actually McCain, in one of his meeting with the public kept being asked really cruel questions about Obama... about him being a terrorist and a terrible person~ and McCain actually did defend him... Then The crowd had the gale to actually BOO him o.o Seriously... Those Republicans must have had the maturity levels of like 12 years old... He was saying a very noble thing and was boo'd like that. That was the ONLY thing McCain did the whole election that made me think "this guys not that bad."

Political campaigns are always nasty... I don't really blame the nominees though... they aren't in control of everything.

I wouldn't get out unless you are absolutely positive that this country can not help you achieve your goals in life. A different president being elected isn't a good reason to leave. This could cause you to make a rash decision that you could regret. Look at your end goals and what will best make that happen. At that point make your decision.

Obama as your Commander in Chief isnt going to change your world, especially in the military. If your going chair force, i mean air force, your tech sergeant is going to have a lot more influence on your day to day life than anyone else will. Oh btw, the armed forces are NOTORIOUS for pulling the job bait and switch at boot camp, so make sure if you do join- your job is locked up and SIGNED/COUNTERSIGNED from the get go. ive had 3 buddies get switched; 1 from the navy, 1 from the Air Force, 1 from the Marines.

Following on the job topic, the only service that will guaruntee your job is the Army. They have a two-year, legal agreement stating that you will work the job you signed up for...at least for the first two years of your career.

        None of the other services offer that guaruntee, although we'll promise you anything you want to hear. ^^;

I'm not gonna chastise you for your beliefs, but I can't ignore the fact that you might be a little misguided. Not because you disagree with Obama, but because of the gap between you and actual reality. If that sounded like an insult, I apologize.

For all the bickering no one has asked, in terms of Obama's policies, what exactly are you in disagreement with? If you're leaving because of politics, it'll serve you to study up on the political climate of the country you're moving to. Because if it is what I think it is, for your reasons, you're in for a rude awakening moving to the UK.

If you read Obama's tax proposal you would understand that this is not the case. Even if we were getting a tax increase its needed. The country needs to bring in money to take itself out of debt.

Does anyone remember the TV Anime Brighter Than Dawning Blue? And how Feena Fam Earthlight wanted to eliminate tension bewteen Earth and the Moon? I sort of see a slight similiarity here, but in this case Obama hasn't gotten started with his changes yet. At the end of Brighter Than Dawning Blue we see how the whole universe witnesses how a commoner was able to marry the Lunar Princess and change the world forever. I notice how the whole world here has been paying close attention to the 2008 Presidential Election, whether your in England, or Japan, anywhere, you just witnessed world history made.

Yeah dude, check it out. Brighter Than Dawning Blue is one of my favorite TV Animes. I've seened it 3 times and never got bored of it. I admire the character Feena Fam Earthlight because of how much hard work and bounderies she has to overcome to make her dream come true. Actually, Feena Fam Earthlight wanted to finish what her mother, Cephilia, couldn't do before she passed away.

I do believe that this election represents a change in America, and though there will be hard times ahead, we will prevail. I think his acceptance speech was amazing, and everyone should listen to it, and I was shocked to see McCain so... how should i say... humble? I was proud of him for reacting the way he did, and I'm actually kind of embarrassed of the state of Arizona! It seemed every time McCain mentioned Obama's name they booed! I do not live in Arizona, but next door to them, and I must say I am embarrassed! Anyway, go America! I pray that this presidency will bring good change not only to us, but the world.

Never voted in any past presidential elections, or in any election of any kind in my entire life for that matter.

Politics is such a dirty, deceitful process that makes people divide themselves into opposing camps that attacks and belittle the other side incessantly while automatically accepting the candidate for their own side as the pinnacle of perfection.

I despise duplicity, bickering or any sort of hostility amongst fellow humans so much that I just do my best to stay as far away from the whole thing as humanly possible.

While I see what you're saying, the truth is that politicians are supposed to carry out the will of the people, and that some politicians actually truly want to do that. However, they get caught up in all the "politics" of everything, and have to resort to means that seem in contrast to their actual intentions. While you despise duplicity, bickering, or any sort of hostility between humans (as do I), sometimes things like that have to happen in order for good things to happen. It's sad, but it's reality :[. If everyone stayed away from it, nothing would get done. I also agree that politics is pretty dirty pretty much everywhere you go - my grandpa was a small town politician in a barrio in the Philippines, and he was killed cause people didn't like the fact that he didn't tolerate corrupt activities, among other things. So, yeah.

In any case, I was going to vote for Obama, but I was late to the polls haha o_o.

As I said, i don't know much about politics, in fact i only know what i hear from word of mouth. But what you said is true especially when it comes to people who are deep into politics. At least your honest about not knowing much, kudos to you. I use to not care about politics at all. then i took a poly-sci class in highschool and took 2 during college. changed the way i think about everything and how i see the world. It made me appreciate the boldness of the declaration of independence, the greatness of the constitution. To understand the nature of law from the perspective of the fore fathers is a great duty that every American should fulfill.
For a good shortcut i believe theres a Dummy's guide to the constitution, or the declaration of independence. I highly recommend understanding those two documents as a great foundation of why America works the way it does.
slate.com is also a great website, but is more into contemporary politics. I hope you find what your looking for, but the best advice i can give you is to take a class-its your best bet.

You can't really know what a president will do till they're actually in the White house...
Everything before that is equivalent to those little "team pacts" they make in reality TV shows like SurvivorxD~ They're just doing it to save their butt from getting voted off.

Yes but that's not something that's completely wide spread. Can you compare gaming to television, radios, or the internet? I personally don't think so. The impact of in-game advertising isn't as profound as that of the internet.

To answers Danny's question, it will not change anything for me. I will remain the same American I have always been. Working hard to help on most election days in my area -this is the first time in many year that I have not volunteered- and not just presidential elections. I will continue to keep track of my elected officials to make sure they do their best for this country.

Tonight and the next few days we celebrate, but our country will remain the same. Come January 21, 2009 our country will still be the same place. It's our responsibility to make change. It will take more that just electing a president.

President-elect Obama is correct when he said he needs our help. Will the current state of the country he is going to need all the help we can give and more.

"How does this change things for you?"

Honestly, Danny, I don't know. Heck, the American people won't even get the first glimpse of what kind of actual change this will have until the first 100 days of Obama's presidency have ended.

The two things that will have the most effect on my life will be changes in his administration for the Department of Defense (DoD), and how Congress will run. Who becomes head man of the DoD, appointees for Chief of Staff, and budgets for the four services will have the greatest effect on my immediate life come next year.

I think my greatest concern is whether the new appointees for running the DoD will have the same vision regarding cultural training as the current DoD staff. I've just transitioned from my previous job to a Regional Affairs Strategist (RAS) job in the Air Force. I focus on language (Japanese), culture, beliefs, politics, and economics in Asia. If the new administration remains big on promoting this kind of training, then things will be good in my life (e.g. assignment to a Japan desk, working with foreign governments and militaries, etc.).

However, if the administration decides to slash the DoD's budget, my program is usually one of the first to feel the cut. So, that's where my major concern lies, right now.

i was listening to the radio throughout the afternoon checking out the latest news and when it finally came in, i couldn't help but smile.
it is one of those moments when you just feel so surreal, even when we are like miles away from the States.
those who know me will know that i made no secret of my support for barrack obama, and rightfully so. My distaste for the mccain campaign lack of discipline coupled with the astounding series of bewildering events didn't really give me much of an option to be honest.
and sarah palin? dear lord, no offence, but she has seriously got to be the worst blunder mccain has made throughout the entire duration of the campaign.

make no mistake though, i have great respect for the senator from arizona. you really get a sense of humility when you read about what he was put through as a POW during the vietnam war. The average joe would have call it quits and retire. But man, if anything, this man is a real fighter, going on to the Senate and running for president. When he was on his last rally yesterday going all out chanting "We never give up, we make history, let's go win an election!", for the first time, i felt goosebumps which i can't quite explain.

what i find demoralising is that fact that news media are painting obama as the "first black president". i think obama himself has highlighted that he does not wish to be acknowledged as a black president, but rather as someone who will bring change to the white house.

geez i sound really pessimistic don't i? hurhur

I think one of the worst blunders he made was going to Pennysylvania and saying "Obama's supporters have been saying some pretty nasty things about Pennsylvania... And I have to say, I completely agree with them! Uh, I mean I totally disagree with you... That is that I... [and so on]"

At least now we have a few Palin pornos doing the rounds on the internet.

Anyway, as for the "black president" thing, I think it's significant that, AFAIK, America is now the first country in history to elect someone from an ethnic minority to be president. Especially one that's had such a rough time historically as the blacks in America.

As far as I've seen, Obama's family history doesn't coincide with the historical struggle of African Americans in the US. His mother is Caucasian - a mix of Irish, English, and Scottish which is why people in Ireland and Scotland were very pleased that he was elected. His father was Kenyan as was his grandfather I believe. Several generations going back shows that none of his relatives were slaves in the US.

By all accounts pressing the historical struggle of African Americans onto Barack, as many seem to believe, is not correct.

While I do agree that it is of such historical importance that we have an ethnic minority in the White House, there are several facts of detail that have to be brought into light when looking at it in the books.

But you have to realize that even though he doesn't share blood ties to slaves in the US, he probably had to endure the same treatment they did. For example, during WWII, I know for a fact that Asians that weren't Japanese were discriminated against - did they not also have to struggle as well? Just going by the fact that he has no relatives whom were slaves did not mean he did not struggle.

True. I was actually going more on the lineage aspect of things since I've heard quite a bit of support for Obama using that reasoning, which is factually incorrect.

Pardon my specificity in that post, I should have stated that so readers won't get confused.

Otherwise, you are correct in implying that it doesn't really make a difference as injustice and discrimination knows no bounds.

I pleased with his victory for public relations reasons. I prefer to have an intelligent man who is a fantastic orator being shown as the representative of our nation to the world. Also his race is important to as perhaps it will give other countries a better image of us as well. Other than that i could care less. Time will show that he'll be no different than the last 30 years of American leadership that caters to the self serving elitists.

He can speak of change all he wants, but don't get too excited quite yet. Unless he plans on withdrawing all our troops from around the world. not just Afghan, and Iraq than who cares. I mean is it really necessary for us to have more military bases in other countries than in our own. I mean we still have soldiers in Japan, Germany, South Korea, and a dozens of other locations. We give this image of peace and prosperity, but we act in the opposite manner. I love my country for what it was founded on, but i can't stand to see all the death and destruction we cause on a global scale for the sake of stopping "terrorists" or "the reds" or any other event that is capitalized on and blown out of proportion to further political agendas and shameless corporate profits.

So before you get angry at my criticism and say: "We must protect our selves from terrorists, and Communism is bad" , Take a moment to put yourself in the shoes of all the Latin American countries the World Bank has exploited to put them in debt, force them to privatize their important industries to us, sell off their valuable resources at a loss to pay the interest on their debts to us....Or how about any of the countless millions of Men and Woman who laugh, love, cry, and smile just like you and me, but are being killed every day as a result of our political and business actions or a direct result of our military commands. Stop being distracted by reality tv, fast food, fancy gadgets, and escapist forms of entertainment and take a lok at this beautiful world we our destroying as a result of our greed and lust for global control. If Obama has the power to alter this than he truly is a man worthy of my devotion. /rant

You underestimate what US military presence does for a foreign region apart from establishing the US's reach.

It brings in prosperity to the region by providing a very large source of income. As well, security is a big issue as the US is such a great military power that it intimidates aggressors and provides a blanket. No one would try and dare to take on a city that holds a US base as it would be considered an immediate threat to American soil.

For the most part you don't see or hear of problems arising in US bases not in war zone territories. What exactly is the problem when just by being there everything is fine? The US isn't the only nation to have foreign bases outside its borders, though we do have the most.

One of the problem plaguing people in general is that when they get angry or fed up with one specific action they tend to generalize and apply that sentiment to everything whether or not a problem lies there.

The people in my state were angered by Bush's actions and applied that to the Republican party as a whole. When re-election for the Governership came around for my state, they voted out the Republican who was doing a good job just to put in a Democrat.

And the first thing that the new governor did was raise our sales tax to bring down the state deficit. Our deficit didn't decrease, it actually increased and things got worse. Everyone who voted for him shut up then started to blame the government for the rising problems when actually its their fault for putting him in their the first place.

mmmmm I did not vote Barack into Office. There is a thing where I love how the will of the people rises up to voice their opinions and take control of their fates, but equally I am disgusted when people blindly go forward without analyzing the situation. I made my decision based on raw logic and left emotions out of the decision, and based on my morals, beliefs and ideas about government I voted to elect John McCain into office. I like neither of 'em- the guy I wanted in office (Michael Huckabee) lost the republican primary.

Anything that become immediatly too popular I dislike. I would like to see less political stuff, but I also recognize that YESTERDAY was the election and that everyones going to shutup cometime February when we are all settled in.

Change is good yes, but what is he going to do? if it has to be this way, lets see what he can do. Otherwise, my role and intervention in politics (voting) is over. I am going back to being an engineer.

The immediate impact of this on the normal lives of Americans, probably none at the moment. We'll see after the next 4 years when either 53% of the US can say "I told you so" or the other 46% of the US can say "I told you so".

Honestly, it is really good to see foreign nations so optimistic about this choice. The hope is this will be the springboard to heal relations that were strained so hard by Bush in the last 8 years.

Still if you ask me, I believe that a tag team combo of Stephen Colbert and Admiral Ackbar would have been 100 times better for the US.

While I applaud Obama's win and am eager to see how he will deal with the situation of the economic and foreign policies, I'm less than enthused to see that the House and Senate both went majority democratic.

Seeing how majority of lawmakers and leaders vote along party lines regardless of their own beliefs in the matter, anything pushed by other parties will be certainly rejected leading to a monopoly on what gets passed.

Basically, the Democratic Party will hold rule of what is passed for the next 4yrs.

Hopefully all this talk of working together and bi-partisanship works out yet I'm weary and slightly believing all that was flirtatious just to get the vote.

My general feeling towards Obama is this. Expectations are too high regarding what he can achieve. In fact, it may be the case that the best he can do is merely keep the USA from sliding into the abyss. However the very fact that America chose him counts for a lot.

So here's to the States, here's to Obama and here's to us not regressing to the dark ages and having to barter with salt and chickens as stock traders hide in their yachts off the coast off the islands of Tahiti.
