JapanProbe has a video of the first Christmas decorations going up at Mitsukoshi department store and Tokyo Times has some photos too.
I remember decorations going up early back in the UK but beginning of November is a first I've seen in Tokyo I think. But I do love the Christ-massy feeling over here - especially the decorations around town and the warm TV commercials like the ones below.

The picture in this post from the Ginza Xmas article.

I'm horrible at reading sarcastic on the interwebs, but I don't think you are far off.

I forgot which blog I read it from (might have been kirainet), but they said that KFC is actually a Christmas tradition for families in Japan. Apparently somewhere along the line its association has been tied with the holiday.

One thing I noticed while traveling in Asia, the American fast food chains(KFC, McD's, etc.) tastes much better there. >_< They are always introducing and promoting new stuff on their menus. And it just might be my perception, but the food also felt less greasy.

The aisles at Costco (a'big box store')here in Nor-Cal had Christmas stuff out the weekend after Labor Day (Sept. 3-4). We saw two women singing 'Grandma got run over by a reindeer' on a karaoke machine. I thought to myself ... what a way to bring in '9-11'. LOL.

The atmosphere in Japan is definitely great during the holidays, they really go all out on making stuff feel cheery. However, if you go during the holidays (or specifically the time between Dec. 26 and New Years) it will kinda suck if you plan on shopping, because many stores will be closed. >_< Well... I'm not sure about the stuff in Akihabara, but many restaurants and clothing stores were closed.

Yep, I can pretty much confirm. Christmas here is very dull over here in comparison. Some people put up pretty elaborate Christmas lights, but with the economy so bad, I have a feeling less people will be motivated to do so this year.

Where I live in England, super markets and shops are already putting up their Christmas decorations for sale and for in store decorations.

It seems where I live, as soon as Halloween is over, Christmas begins. Now you can buy an advent calendar anywhere (even in pet stores for your cat and dog) and you can already buy selection boxes and the giant tins of Roses, Celebrations, Toblerone and more.

I quite dislike the long hype and build up before Christmas.

Here there is an increasing demand for a law that will ban Christmas decorations in shops, streets and so on outside December. I support this since "Christmas outside Christmas" is mainly some commercial thing and it means that when we finally arrives at Christmas then people are already tired of it. No shop can postpone decorations until December when all the other shops starts to use them now or in a week or whatever. This is why a law is needed to make sure that it's the same for all of them.

I feel sad that Christmas has become so long. It kind of takes away the sacret feeling it used to have when the decorations appeared 1-2 weeks before Christmas.

oohh yes! Venezuelan people thinks that december is too short so they star the xmas decoration since eraly november, then... in xmas day, the decoration is dusty and not so shining at the first day.

But is nice. In my home in Venezuela, my mom likes to decor the house in november 15. I don't know when i will decor my home in Spain, because i will come back last week of november.

I saw a house with some Christmas lighting about two weeks ago? That just about made me wanna hurl. TOO SOON!! It wasn't even Halloween then!!!

When I was growing up in Korea, Christmas season had this warm, happy feeling. Danny's Ginza pics remind me of some of that. Now, here in U.S., that feeling's lost, gone.
Maybe because I got older? Still..., -_-

Yeah, I see what you mean. I guess 'cause Thanksgiving's more about families and people getting together. And there's less commercialism, for the most part - people don't feel the pressure to go get gifts and things.
Thanksgiving, I do like. My sister is a mean cook, so it helps too! Yum.

Ohh I miss celebrating Christmas in Japan, although I gotta admit there's a little bit less holiday spirit going around. But the KFC was good during the holidays. The first KFC ever was in my town, but they knocked it down. D:

Anyway, my neighborhood gets completely in the spirit for the holidays. We have hot chocolate nights, visit homeless shelters, decorate trees for Festival of the Trees, it's all very Christmasey. I think in America, a lot more of Christmas is about giving, while in Japan, I just celebrated with my grandparents and friends. ^^

Christmas is just an end of the year commercial holiday for franchise stores to clean their inventories or rip people off. Jesus wasn't born around Christmas, why do I start seeing models of Jesus Born In Shed, people are misled.....

But, Christmas is an excuse to have Romantic Night with your Honey/Biotch

I'm sick of the sight of them. The stores here in the UK put them up so early now they don't have any space left for Halloween. While I appreciate the time off work, xmas is a pretty ridiculous thing. Half faux religious crud, half in your face aggressive hard sell. Couldn't we just celebrate the new year and forget xmas altogether?

I saw them putting up decorations on Friday night around the station. Like with most adaptations japanese do christmas is just about the tree and illuminations with no religious significance, well that sounds logic.

Since there are no turkeys here they got KFC, if only they knew that there so many different varieties of xmas dinner all over the world. And don't forget about xmas cake in japan as with everything here they line up and make reservations for a simple whipped cream cake.

As far as I now xmas here is seen more as a couples day, apparently your a looser if you fail to have one, and it all ends on the 24th when the real xmas is the next day. There is also a thanksgiving day but with a completely different meaning, it's labor thanksgiving day on November 23.

The Wal-Mart store changed over all the candies aisles as of Oct 31. I was going to see if I could score some cheap candies. But the clerks report they are all sold out. They were very busy unpacking all the X-mas chocolate. With the economy slowing down, the merchants are not waiting to "help the consumers" by spreading the cost of celebrating X-mas over several more weeks.
