monoqlo title=

Monoqlo (家電批評 monoqlo) is a new monokei magazine that hit the shelves of convenience stores and bookshops throughout Japan (and available at #''#4883806561,monoqlo,Amazon#''#).
In this case, "monokei" refers to mags like Best Gear, Mono Magazine and Begin which cover electronic gadgets and other "cool" stuff.
I have been asked to write for monoqlo and the first edition contains my article on one of my favorite subjects...

monoqlo title=

Which is figures! ^^;

Unlike most of the other monokei magazines which only tell you how good a product is, monoqlo takes a different approach and endeavors to help consumers by telling them the truth. If a product is crap, monoqlo will say so. Monoqlo also gives pointers on what consumers should look out for when buying a particular product. Also covered are things like why X is so expensive and Y is so cheap.

My first article is about things that newbie figure buyers should look out for like gloss paint used on hair (ugh), glue between the seams (double ugh), gaps between joints (...), bad paintwork and most importantly, if the figure has a skirt - it must have cast off ability ^^;

Am planning on talking about the different types of figures available in the next issue.

monoqlo title=

An example of a spread giving you details on what you should look out for when considering buying a projector.
Other monokei mags just end up having a ton of projectors with good things written about all of them.

monoqlo title=

Info on SLRs. Monoqlo gives you pointers on what you can ask shop assistants to see whether you can trust them or not. While some shop assistants in Japan know what they are talking about (and hence give you good advice), some other shop assistants have not a clue what they are talking about (where you should promptly walk away). The worst shop assistants are in Sakuraya and Bic Camera - a bunch of lazy students.

monoqlo title=

This edition of Monoqlo also covers the dodgy batch of NDS that are out. The screens are yelowish and blur when scrolling. The lot number to beware of starts with UJH.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

Wow! A magazine that I would really love to have. Most magazines give crap reviews or don't provide sufficient information on a particular product.

Monoqlo seems to give a review from a neutral point of view ^^

    Nicely done Danny!

The USA is the land of the dollar, and MOST corporate run stores will say anything to get you out the door with a sale! Smaller companies that don't run on franchises (like local model stores I go to, local art stores) often help their customers for return business. Some corp run companies I have been to (Best Buy stores, Radioshack) have treated me well though. Not everyone is willing to go that little extra bit, though.

Thankfully the guy that sells me figures and gunpla here is very trustworthy and knows what hes doing but sometimes I advice him on the figures he has for sale saying that some of them might have leaning problems in the future.

I see that you are reviewing about figures in magazine which is great but there's always a catch with this, by the time the magazine is reviewing the figure the same figure might have been launched a couple of months ago and go out of stock.

Other thing, not many shops in the world sell huge quantities of figures so that we can have a couple in our hands and look for flaws.

Mag looks great...now imprtove on my Japanese. I thought Dutch shop assistents were bad/rude/uniterested wanting you out of the shop half an hour before closing time. But my experience in Korea when looking at a new camera made me think that there are worse places. The shop assistents didn't even look up, two were texting on their cellphone (or watching tellie), when asked a question. Needless to say I left Korea without buying. I'd rather pay more then be ignored.

Looks like a decent magazine, it can help people become experts. Good Job getting an article in it.

Shop assistants in the UK irritate me, I remember once I was happily browsing through some games at Game when I was asked "do you need help?" like twice and it made browsing a hassle. I just wanted to window shop... But thats only in mainstream shops, if you find a small specialist shop the assistants don't bother you and you can ask questions whenever.

Wish more magazines like that would come out. When I buy stuff I tend to want to know everything about it first so looking at most magazines doesn't really help.

Same thing goes for most sales persons around my area. Rarely you'd see sales people that knows their thing and would recommend or not the product their selling.

Danny, i think soon we should all expect you becoming Prim Minister of Japan or something. You are slowly spreading your influence and then bam you are the ruler. hehehhe (-.-)

for the most part assistance over here in Washington DC Area, USA are not bad really. They at lest want to help and if they don't know they will ask/find someone who will. Or they will simply point me where I can find my product. Still I rarely ask them for what is better since I do my research online and read people's reviews.

This is really a good initiative.

I tend not to be a shopper because of those guys who go for a big smile and only wish for you to buy something (that is also why I refused to be in the business domain).

Specialized magazines (computers, television reviews and the like) bore me because it is not about durability or true value, but performances only and critics are really relative.

We can't even trust reputed companies much anymore. Look at Sony for example... What happened to them? I wonder.

I really like when the critics are saying things without taking multiple detours. It helps me believe that we live in a world that has bot been fully (ha!) contaminated by hypocrisy.

Anyway, I am very happy that you can review stuff that you like and that you're not forced to say stupid false things.

Oh, and about shop assistants? Most of the time, they dont know what i want to know. If i want to know something about the software on a Creative labs MP3 player, they shrug as if all they know are Ipods or something.
I tend to do 85% of my shopping on the internet these days. Its been ages since i went to a 'real' shop. You can do loads of research, price it up from loads of different places and get all the info you need without any dissapointing 'we dont sell that' comments or brainless crowds of zombie-shoppers.

    Henry,
Nope - covers a wide variety of things like food too.

    Andy,
    No affiliation ^^

    Antabax,
Amazon Japan should ship to Malaysia.

    Perplexus,
The ones in Malaysia and China are scary - they leech onto you as soon as you walk in!

    Setsuna-san, kmh
    Will consider it ^^

    Sector6,
Not enough space to mention everything including leaning.
