Hector spots a Dog Water Bar serving up free mineral water for the K9 species.
Been thinking of getting a dog but know knowt about them. Something small, cute, lively and funny - what should I go for?

For dog owners - how much time and money do you spend on your dog?

I own a few dogs, they are high maintenance, but definitely worth it. I probably spend around 100usd a month on food for each, but they are large breed Labradors, it might be cheaper for small dogs.
however I know you like to keep your place very clean, so I probably wouldn't recommend it for you. you might end up dusting dog hair from figures and sweeping poop off your floor. ^^; although you could probably train him/her to poop on a certain spot, you can't keep the dog from shedding. ^^

and a cup dispenser on the side for the owner to share a drink with their pup. ^^; lol

I gotta say, I personally do not like dogs at all. Especially bigger dogs. All they do is bark, drool, shed, jump, and slobber on you. I was also bitten by a dog when I was younger. So yeah, you couldn't pay me to live with a dog... >_>

Takes a lot of time, and a lot of money lol. We got 2 at the same time (so they wouldn't be lonley) and they were £600 each! Food, Beds, Tracking, Toys, Jabs etc. cost loads too. And you need the time to play with them and walk them, so considering you don't have much free time anyways I don't think it is a good idea haha. ^^

Terriers are typically high maintenance and difficult to train aren't they. I've heard they have a very low attention span. Maybe I'm thinking of Jack Russels Terriers...Just curious.

Nah, American Bull Terriers are obedient. Of course you have to show who's boss every other time, but that's normal in any breed.

The thing about this breed is that they are a little mischievous, only they don't do it on purpose you know. Like, they'd take a nib at you just to get your attention.

But, they CAN be properly trained. Of course, this is what I read online about them, never had the chance of having more than a few encounters with this breed on the street... But they're soooooooo awesome! ^_^

Dog's are pretty high maintenance, so you have to really put your all into owning one. If you want a small dog, I'd go with a Pomeranian or something, they're really nice, really small dogs. However, a cat can be a great pet too, requires very little maintenance (all you have to do is feed/take out litter) but are pretty much un-trainable and their personality can be a hit an miss. My sister got lucky and she has a very passive, friendly cat that loves being around people. Some people aren't lucky and get cats that hide under the bed all day.

I don't own a dog (owns and owned a whole lot of other animals though), but I still know some stuff about about dogs. First of all before getting an animal (this goes for all animals) you should be fully aware of what it means to have a dog (both the good parts and the bad parts).

Dogs are pack animals. This means that they always sees themselves as a member of a pack. This is just fine (and sometimes great) if it sees the owner as the pack leader. If it figures that it will be the pack leader itself, then you are in for problems. You should learn what signs to looks for so you can become the leader before it gets any funny ideas.

Being a pack animal, they do somewhat bad at being alone, specially for long hours. Some dogs can handle being alone all day, some can't. You and your neightbours don't want the dog to sit and call for you all day.

Figure out where the dog is allowed to go in the house. Make sure that it will not be able to go where you don't want it to go.

Prepare for dog hair everywhere where the dog is and I really mean everywhere. (this is a main reason why I decided not having a dog)

Dogs can have a nasty habbit of knocking everything down. This can be a figure collection, but it can also be toys used by the next generation when that time comes.

Ensure that you know how big the puppy will be when it's grown up (yes, some people forget that it will not stay puppy size all life... go figure)

If the dog is already grown up when you get it, then it's way harder to learn it how you want it to behave. Get a young one (beware of dogs that are taken from their mother at a too young age though)

Dogs are like babies. They poop and piss everywhere until they learn where to do it.

The pack animal instint will make the dog want to be around you at most/all time when you are at home.

You will need time for the dog. Consider how huch time you can use daily.

Try to make sure that the dog didn't experience something bad before you get it. If somebody beats up a dog then it will be mentally scared for the rest of it's life and will never be calm in a household. This means that you should get it from a source you trust (whereever that might be)

I guess this is what comes to my mind. I think if people are prepared for this then it can be really great to have a dog. However unprepared people can be in for a surprise and that's bad for both the people and the dog.

Pet adoption is a wonderful thing but you have to be willing to risk the negatives of not knowing what the dog has been through before like abuse, neglect, poor health of it or its parents. You just don't know...Kinda like a used car.

Yeah, my neighbour is feeding a dog that hangs out in our street (can't really say he owns the dog, but he does sleep in his garden and my neighbour put a collar on him (and the dog didn't complain about it!)).

He's a real cute dog, don't know the breed but he's about the size of a german sheppard. He has the sweetest look in his eyes and never ONCE did i see him be aggresive.

Strangely, everytime I try to approach him and have something in my hand he doesn't come near me... But if i'm empty-handed, he'll come to me and he'll let me pet him, so he probably was abused and is now affraid that when i have something in my hand i might hit him or something... I feel so sad when i think about it...

Well, at least now he's being taken care of, and he's not kept on a chain or anything, so he can leave whenever he wants.

Try approaching with a rolled up newspaper or magazine. If he's been abused thats probably one of the implements used.

Personally, I'm not of fan of German Sheperds. I've run into too many that were mean. My old basset hound got attacked by one.

1st paragraph: I wouldn't make opinions about dogs when you don't even own one.
2nd: Not true for many, many breeds.
3rd: A great solution is to give them a companion but none of my dogs have ever shown signs of being lonely, even when alone in the house for days. You'd be surprised at the many chew toys that they enjoy.
4th: Usually that's not a problem, especially when the dog doesn't shed but there's always dog repellent to fix that if you don't want it upstairs or something.
5th: None of my dogs shed, meaning that there are many breeds out there that don't shed.
6th: Mine have never done that before. My otaku friend has a German Shepherd that has never done that either. Especially if it's not food, dogs will leave your figure collection alone. Of course you should be careful to take care of your figures like you always have like not leaving them on the floor to be stepped on and stuff.
7th: Yes, this is good to keep in mind!
8th: Not true. In fact, it's the opposite for many dogs. When young, they don't know as much until they grow older and become more disciplined, just like when a child grows up.
9th: Training them to do it outside can be easy and difficult. My dogs are trained to do it in a cat litter box.
10th: Meh.. my dogs greet me when i get home but continue to play in the yard and stuff when i'm busy.
      11th: I don't spend that much time with my dogs, just when i'm watching anime (they sit on my lap), reading stuffs, and when it's dinner or something. ^^ When each member of the family spends a little time with them, it adds up to quite a lot, maybe a little too much attention. ^^;
12th: Not true. I own a dog who was beaten by the previous owner. She's the most loyal and kind being i've ever met.
13th: Yes, do be prepared, but it's fine if you don't know every single thing about a dog before you get it. My parents didn't know anything but it was fun to learn through experience. ^^

Overall, my dogs are very kind and gentle. I have a Labrador retriever mixed and a King Charles spaniel. They are so fun to play with and are not a hassle to take care of. ^^

ok, so people disagree with me. I based this on information I got from the people, who run deal with dogs (and I don't mean dog owners, I mean breeding, training and stuff like that).

First of all, I have to admit I wrote it more like facts for all dogs rather than what I meant, which is more like problems people encounter (but not in all cases) (damn, where is the edit button)

I expected people to disagree because a lot of the potiential problems I mention aren't problems everywhere. However this is reasons why people give up on a dog.

I think the bottomline is that there can be problems if you just get a dog and hope for the best. Sometimes that plan works and sometimes it don't. Figure out what you want to do with your dog and see if you can find a dog race that match this patterns (some have higher demands for walks and so on).

Not right now.. my dog died a few weeks ago. He was almost 15 already.
Funny Danny would make a post like this just today...
I dreamt of him just last night. Felt like the last goodbye.

I recommend getting choosing a nice pedigree, smart and small dog.
And like some commenters already said, be prepared: Dogs can be very dirty, can be smelly, can give lots of trouble.
But they are always there for you, and I can definitely say I don't regret having my dog even though he really gave lots of trouble.... :P

Past two years it was diagnosed he had diabettes... so things goes almost like humans.
We had to buy special food, had to give 2 insulin shots a day, and had to take him at least once a month to a veterinarian to check blood levels and stuff.

Oh, cats are nice too, but only if you like them.
And they are not as dependable or faithful as dogs... they tend to be more independent, free or less sympathetic depending on how you view it.
They are more clean, though you can have problems with their hair depending on the pedigree.

I probably didn't own a cat because I'm allergic to them. With dogs, the allergic reaction was small, so I didn't bother much. With cats though, it gets very bad...

I never had a cat, but i have observed a few of neighbours cats' and their behaviours are prrty much that - they are all cuddly and stuff, WHEN THEY WANT SOMETHING...

I have a Pug, they are small, cute, lively AND funny.

As for how much money do I spend on him...a lot but not that much. His food is like $25 which lasts quite a bit and toys aren't too bad. Medical care can get expensive but it's not bad either.

If you want low maintenance there isn't anything better than a Basset Hound. Don't need to brush them and they love to sleep. My old one could be left at home alone for like 12 hours and wouldn't even move 6 ft. they love sleep. The only trouble is that they are stubborn and more difficult but not impossible to train. Once trained though they are nearly perfect.

I once got attacked by a cat. The bastard jumped up and bit me in my head D:
It hurt like hell and I was bleeding from a would that fits the size of a completely open mouth on a cat (which is somewhat larger than you would normally imagine). I have been scared of cats ever since... well not scared enough to run away from them, but I kept my distance.

I have also been bitten by a dog. However that didn't really change my view on dogs in general, only that specific dog. I'm not scared of well trained dogs but I avoid ill behaving dogs. Also I presume unknown dogs to be ill behaved since that's the most common type here >.<

dogs are the best! ^^ my first dog was a pomeranian whom lived up to 18 human years T_T pomeranians are really adorable and not that hyper/attention seeking~!
    my current dog Bomber is a mini foxie terrier ^^ extremely cute but extremely hyperactive~! he needs a walk everyday and seeks for attention a lot. i guess all small breeds are cute but it depends on whether you want a hyperactive dog or a more laid back snuggle-on-lap type ^^;
i spend about usd$50 a month on foods, toys, treats ^^; theres also the once-a-year vaccination/check up~ XD sterilising your dog is a great idea as it reduces chances of the dog from getting e.g. testicular cancer in its older age & also makes the dog much more obedient ^^ (no humping/trying to get out of the house to mate)
    i spend about 12 hours a day with my dog ^^ guess some people may view dogs as troublesome but its really worth it~! :3 the amount of joy, love, comfort, loyalty a dog brings ^^; even if i had a bad day, once i get home with my dog waiting for me with that ever cheerful smile and licks it all makes it worth it ^^;

Pomeranians are a good breed of dog especially if you are busy and don't have time to walk them and give them exercise everyday. They're playful and energetic but make good lap dogs. The only downside is fur. You need to brush them regularly.

I've always had dogs as pets and although I prefer cats, I would say to anyone that dogs are great to have. Different breeds do have distinct characteristics though so be sure to do lots of research on breeds to find out which type would suit you before buying. My dog costs about £6 a week on food and toy's are cheap, like a £ or so here and there. Be careful to remember about vet fees as well as they can end up very pricey. Pet insurance is a nice way to get peace of mind. Of course you do have to groom dogs, clean them and clean up their poo, but they're so worth it for the unconditional love they give you.

My folks always had dogs, so I'm used to them since I was little. But as several people pointed out already, getting a dog must be a well thought out decision.
In a blunt and simplified way of saying it, a dog is like a surrogate child in some ways. Meaning it will require you to educate it, care for it and spend time with it.

Most dogs shed fur, and it will get absolutely everywhere. Some breeds will also drool and smell quite bad (Newfoundland, Saint Bernard,...) Make sure you teach them not to chew on your stuff or figures will get eaten.

To chime in with Louki, some breeds like poodles do not shed fur, a plus, though you have to brush them (nearly daily) to remove the dead hair so you'll still get some dog hair around. They also tend to be indoor dogs which is ideal for people not wanting to spend much time walking them or being outdoors. If you do look into poodles, definitely go for a Standard Poodle, they're large sized dogs and tend to be much calmer dogs than their hyper smaller breed brethern.

Smaller breeds are nearly always very hyperactive, loud dogs while larger breeds will be calmer and more composed. If I'd ever get a dog it'd be a larger breed, I couldn't stand the ruckus of the smaller hyper ones.

Danny, as someone who has lived his entire life having dogs as pet I have a few pieces of advice. Research your breeds. The American Kennel Club (AKC) is a great place to find out about the breeds and what breed of dog will suit you and your family. This is essential since some breeds are not as trainable, friendly, cuddly, healthy as others.

Second, before getting a dog make sure it has its medical clearences. Because nearly all breeds were created through selective breeding most have distinct health problems specific to their breed. Make sure the dog your about to buy had healthy parents that didn't die of cancer or have to be put down because of something like hip displasia (painful and debilitating).

Third. Make sure you/your family isn't allergic to the dog. Pet the dog then wipe your eyes to check. Another good check is to pet the dog with the inside of your wrists...if allergic you'll get hives within 10 minutes.

4th, once your purchase dog install a bell about 6 inches above by your door so it is easy to potty train. You simply ring the bell (by bumping the dog into it) whenever you take the dog out to potty. Within a week or so the dog will start ringing the bell when it needs to go out.

Last, buy lots of toys (10-15+) to keep the puppy occupied. Buy keeping the dog occupied with his/her toys they won't be bored and go after your furnature, shoes, electric cords, and most importantly your figures.

Please don't lest this scare you from getting a dog. They are probably the truest companion next to a good wife that you will ever have. they will always be there to greet you happily when you come home and try to raise your spirits when your down. They are terrific animals.

That or a cat like I have - but cats are quite different in that they're so aloof compared to dogs. When I get home, my cat hounds me for 5-10min as if it were a puppy, purring and throwing itself all over me, but at all other times simply leaves me alone and requires virtually no maintenance aside from leaving him food to eat.

I can see that several races have been mentioned as a really good one. Not surprisingly people tend to recommend the race they have themselves. No offence but I can't help but to compare it to the mac vs windows vs linux argument (not to mention which linux is best). My point is that what's best for one person isn't always best for another person and because of that a group of people can never settle for a result. There is no "the best race". There is the "presuably best race" for Danny.

I think a good place would be to start by thinking about what Danny requested. "Something small, cute, lively and funny". We also know that he is busy. I can't find anything about the size of his garden or house right now (I think it was mentioned at some point), but since it's Tokyo I guess it's safe to presume that going for a small dog is a good idea.

Considering those information I guess not all candidates mentioned here would be great even though they are great for other people.

Now the big question: which race? I honest don't know :P

      1) Danny (probably) doesnt have a whole lot of space! Most places in Japan dont, especially compared to us in the US.
      2) Danny works a lot. Not sure if the wife stays at home during the day, but something that requires a ton o' attention is probably out.~
      3) Danny likes things to be clean. Consider shedding a no-no!
      4) Danny has allergies! The less dander, the better!
      5) Cute and cuddly is always good. =]
      6) Funny. Lots of personality is a go!

        4) is actually a really good point. It's not recommended for people with allergies to have furry pets or birds. The problem is that if a person is allergic to say dust, then (s)he is more likely to develop allergy against dogs if exposed to dogs all the time. Allergy is against microscopic organisms eating the fur. I think they can get into the air even if the dog isn't shedding.

According to the some organisation for people with allergies here, the ideal pet for a person with tendency to allergy is: a turtle. However turtles are reptiles and you can't tame a reptile, so it likely looses a lot of personallity.

We don't need to spend that much on our dog, since the only thing we really need to buy is foodstuffs. She's also an outdoor dog so we don't have to clean up fur or dirt in our house. Sometimes we get her toys, but she always ends up burying them and then forgetting about it.

I own a golden retriever named Laddie, very mild and friendly temperament, few other dogs can beat their personality in my opinion. He's not very high maintenance cause he lives with my grandparents out in the woods, so plenty of room to roam. And we only bath him once a month. He's a medium sized dog but very strong. Maybe a bit too big for you Danny. I'm not a small dog person. My apt doesn't allow dogs over 40 LBS so a lot of yorkies and Chihuahua's around my complex. I heard poodles don't shed if your looking for a more cleaner dog, not sure about their personality. If you want a no maintenance pet, I've heard pet rocks are wonderful ;)

Dog require extensive responsibilities and caring/love from the owner. In return they will be great companions for a decade, sad things with pet is that they die, they don't live as long as human, thats why I won't have pet at the moment. I know a friend who suffered greatly emotionally from the demise of his childhood companion german shepherd.

I've done a LOT of research on dogs, and the two breeds that I would recommend would be:

1)Shiba Inu - Native to Japan, it should be easy and fairly inexpensive to find one there. They only grow to be 17 to 24 pounds or so, are very friendly, and lively. Heres a few videos of them on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmUFrsxtSkE & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOXbaN70aus
Only bad thing about this breed is that they do shed quite a bit because they have a underlayer of fur that they shed twice a year.

2)Basenji - These dogs are native to Africa. They are barkless, and shed very little to not at all. They do well in an apartment type setting, as long as they are walked regularly. Plus I think they're friggin' adorable. ^_^; They are also said to wash themselves like cats, and they have no doggie smell. Because of this they're considered very good for people with allergies. -points at Danny Choo-

Hope this helps! Look into it.

Don't own a dog. BUT... I do own a ferret ^^. I hear that in Japan they are quite popular.

I think they are quite low maintenance pet. They sleep for like 20hours a day... They can be taught tricks, just like a dog. They can be litter trained, they can be fed simple kitten dry biscuits.
They don't require much space, they don't make much noise, and they don't need to be walked (but you can of course on a leash).
Here's piccy of my ferret.... name is bobo.

I own a Maltese cross terrier, you can see a picture in my facebook album somewhere x3 [name: Alejandra], he's very cute, doesn't bite, good with kids, he does bark at passing dogs, but we've never taken him to training. He basically looks like Maltese but with a longer snout and has patches of large light brown.

    If I were to get another dog later in the future, I was looking at the Japanese Spitz. More info on Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Spitz and a little extra info http://www.japanesespitz.com.au/about_thebreed.htm - I like the fact that they have no 'doggy odours' xD;

He's pretty sweet. He doesn't shed fur, he isn't so hyper (unless he knows you're going out then he'd try to go with you) He is kinda loving too...like he would nudge to sleep by my side.

I like brachycephalic dogs that think they're people, personally, so I'm big on shi-tsus and Brussels Griffons. I especially love Griffons. They are the most people-like out of all the dog breeds I've met. However, Griffons are veeerry demanding. Basically, you're the center of their universe if you're the center of theirs.

Basic rule for picking a dog though is to meet the dog in person. Always! When you find the right one, you should feel an instant rapport with him or her. If you don't, it's not the right dog.

As a side note, females are mellower than males, typically, in virtually every breed. They're not as territorial and are thus not as into peeing on things or playing stupid dominance games that the males do. As a first-time dog owner, you might want to put priority on a female over a male.

Good luck! I hope you find a new fluffy friend soon. :)

Maybe it's the bacteria level in the water. It could be that there are laws stating how many bacterias the water is allowed to contain if served for humans. I don't think they really considered pets in such a law.

Alternatively it's just marketting. As I said earlier I think it's a dog hairdresser so they want a "good for dogs" image :)

I have two Siberian Huskies. My wife and I chose them because they don't bark (but they howl occasionally), don't have a doggie smell (they only get bathed once a year and still don't smell), and are just adorable. They do however sheds lots and lots of hair, particularly after winter is finished.

There are a few smaller breeds that don't smell, and some that don't shed hair, so that would suit you better I think. Money-wise, my two dogs cost around $750AU each to keep each year + any unexpected vet visits which is very expensive. They cost probably double that each in their first two years. That's all on top of the original purchase price.

One important thing - buy from a registered breeder, especially if that breeder also shows their own dogs. The breeder, if they're serious about the dogs they're breeding, will offer a lifetime of free advice as they will want to keep tabs on how 'their' dogs are going. That's what we did, the dogs were actually cheaper than buying at the pet store, and the breeder is now a good friend too.

    Good luck^^

I don't recommend you to have even a pet, if either you or your wife have time to spend on your pet. To take care a pet is like having children of your own. Food, "potty" and love must be provided daily.

If you travel overseas together with your wife, how you going to take care of your pet? Send it to a part-time pet hotel? Expensive. Ask a friend to take care? Don't bother. They even don't have time to do their own things...

My friendly advice... No pet please...
