Anime Censorship

The latest episode of Rosario and Vampire was quite unwatchable. Disliked that bat from the first series and thought that it was going to be killed off but now its back in full force with a pedo bear.

As I mentioned before after speaking to some folks in the anime industry, they don't really make money from airing the series on TV or streaming it on the net - the bulk of money is made from DVD sales and then licensing.
I'm getting the feeling that they are purposely censoring TV time so that folks will go and buy the DVDs. But in Rosario's case, it looks like they are completely over doing it.
The animation quality has also taken a huuuge nosedive into a vat of steaming cack too.

More censored pics at Sankaku Complex.

Do you hunt for the uncensored DVD version when its out (Sekirei, Strike Witches, Kanokon etc) ?

Still love the OP though (which was previously the ED).

They gotta make money somehow, right? I guess I understand them a little.

But that's way too much censorship. They should do something about that or else people will stop watching their anime. It's not really a good view to watch a scene with bats stuck on someone's privates, noh?

Yeah im with you on this. They have to make money somehow, and with all the hype about streaming and watching on TV, the need to buy it isnt as high. With this maybe the industry will earn some money and prosper?

Besides as a viewer, you have to just wait until the dvd is out and then dl that lol

Well that just emphasizes the idea that "sex sells". Buy uncensored version just to see some nipples?

I understand the principle of purists, and that above shot does make the show somewhat unwatchable. But anime in the past that was PG-13 didn't have problems with strategically placed hair, cloth, fog, or other items. Why change it now?

I haven't seen much of Rosario yet, but I think we all hate the censoring that goes into TV broadcasts, especially when it isn't needed. Thankfully it doesn't seem to be too bad in Japan (they only seem to censor the stuff that REALLY shouldn't be on TV), but it looks like they've been going overboard in this current season of Rosario + Vampire. It's a rather blatant marketing ploy.

    occuwhat?

Most of the time i can stand the censorship since it doesn't affect my viewing that much.

There is however case in which the series loses half it's appeal for me if uncensored, i'm talking about Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. And cases in which the series is rendered useless, like Kodomo no Jikan, this last censoring not only the entire image but also the dialogue.

I find that interesting - implied sexuality, which could even be more "naughty" than the explicit sexuality is not censored. Komodo no Jikan definitely has great examples of that, and likewise, sometimes the censorship adds amusement to the show, such as your example of Zetsubou Sensei. I'm not sure the onsen scene would have been nearly as funny without those stupid floating pics of that bald guy. :)

why not just put a damn bat all over the screen instead? ~_~ And yeah,if its an ecchi anime like rosario, then i'll just say very late time (when kids should sleep!) - and less censoring. Sure,i can understand censoring like they had on kanokon since it didnt bother me a bit,but rosario is going overboard. >_<

If the story in Rosario+Vampire was better, this might now be a problem, but it isn't. The story is average, and over played, so the main reason to watch (for me at least) was for the fanservice. With that taken away, there is no point to watch.

The diehard fans will already be buying the DVDs, so the censoring despite the late timeslot seems to be a deliberate ploy to get more (less fanatical) fans to buy the DVDs. Like I said in Actar's news item, this may be a plan for them to get people to stop loving their DVR versions.

Steam and no nipples I can tolerate, but censoring the girls having clothes(pantsu and bras) on while other ecchi anime shows have almost naked girls all over the screen. Well the censoring is ridiculous and WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY too much, they should limit it to a few bats and why do they need to add pedo bear when Yukari turned to a non loli in this episode. Truly this is one of the BEST episodes of R+V that is RUINED by BATS and Pedo bears.

I believe certain TV stations were airing the non-censored version for the first 2 episodes, but they now all air the censored version, from what I hear. Censorship itself, I don't mind. The way you do it, I do.
In a bathtub/bath house with a fog, sure why not. These bats? clearly they got someone that's supposed to give fanservice and stickered on a "MUST PAY TO SEE" Bat on it. Which is damned annoying. At least make it more subtle. I loved Austin Powers censorship; they combined it so well and it was comical. They made the censorship on purpose and it was so smooth. Do something like that, which I have seen other animes do. This is just annoying.

I didn't watch it yet, but I think it goes something like this:
I also saw the pics on Sankaku Complex, and I think they overdid it.

I understand censoring when it's to comply to age standards.
But I disagree with the argument that "they have to make money somehow".

First, because they are already making money. If it's on TV, they already got payed for it.
And if they got payed for it, it's because they accepted a contract, which is fair and square.

Second, because that argument has no limits.
I mean, what's next? They'll just put a huge bat over 10 minutes of the show and say "if you want to see the rest, buy the DVD"?

I don't like where the whole "censored version uncensored version" is going.
Soon enough, we'll have anime with capped extra sex scenes that are DVD exclusive.

I don't like the fact that some animation studios are going to lenghs of creating animes that has to have those censored scenes just to sell more DVDs.

It's just becoming too artificial. Things like that can lower drastically the quality of plots and stories selected to make animes.

I will buy any amount of DVDs for a series I like. Mixed about this one, though, so it is a maybe.

Besides, if you want bad editing, go watch Saban's (long before they were bought by Disney)version of Dragon Ball Z. The edits were just bad.

Well I wouldn't mind the censor if I was a member of the bat species but I am not therefore it does suck. I do not remembering it being anywhere near as bad as it is now in the 1st season. In fact maybe its just me but I dun really recall much censoring at all.....maybe just a little.

I understand the need to censor sometimes especially on things that air at certain times but yeah I agree with alot of the people stated above me, they so overdid this...

I just got the first volume of Sekirei and it's uncensored, but I didn't get it for that. I didn't really mind the censored images shown when it aired on tv. I really didn't notice the floating nipples defect that's been talked about. I'll get an uncut version if it adds more content, but not really for uncensored content.

You have to look for uncensored here; sometimes they'll even trim or change plot points to make it more palatable for US audiences. Luckily heavy changes are on the decline (too many angry fans *chuckle*) but it's still something to watch out for.

And god, that bat is annoying. Not subtle at all! it even blocks the faces of people in the background. It looks like they blew it up beyond the original image size too; it's clearly a different image quality than the rest. . .

Kinda makes you wonder what's the point of airing the series if the censoring is going to be that bad? The same thing happened with Kodomo no Jikan and makes me ponder that the ploy might only be to sell more DVDs. Oh well, it's not like I'm watching Capu2, but I can empathize with the irritation.

I think it's pretty tragic if anime commonly resorts to teasing you with censored softcore images and then promises uncensored softcore images if you pay them. It basically lowers those shows (and to a degree, anime as a whole) to the level of free previews on porn channels.

It would be incredibly weird if, say, Eastenders had a half-naked woman with her tits concealed by a boiling kettle and then charged people to see the scene without the kettle. It'd be (correctly) seen as a sign that the show was on its knees and was trying ANYTHING to get views (and money).

When you consider how much otaku tend to fantasise over panties, you'll realise that the panties may as well by a sexual organ as far as they're concerned. They're just as willing to pay for an expensive DVD to see panties as they are to pay to see nipples - possible more so, in some cases.
