Japan Hotel title=

OK, this post is not really about Japanese Hotels but of an interesting way for you to stay cheap in Japan so that you can save your money for Gundams n figures...

This is a picture of a Private Room or Video Box service at Akihabara. You can rent a small private room thats equipped with a TV, DVD player, an internet connection and a reclining chair - some of them fold out flat so you can sleep.
The price list shows 3,000 yen for 12 hours which is cheap and you get to use their shower facilities too. Sounds good?

While you can use these as cheap accommodation, the main purpose of these private rooms is for folks who suddenly get the urge from looking at too much Moe stuff at Akihabara.
While peeking inside, I see rows of adult DVDs and men being handed some Tenga before they go to their room @.@
This page shows you what its like on the inside - notice the adult DVDs and Tenga ^^;
Only in Japan? I'm not sure but dont remember seeing anything like this in London or Seattle.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Japan category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

the idea of a long stay in one of these rooms, after reading what you said, danny... is pretty much a put off, lol...

    who knows what pile of tissues, goo, stains on the recliner chairs might be left behind in the room? but seeing this is japan, i think they will fastidiously clean after the last customer before renting it out again ^^;

internet(& manga?) kissaten(cafes) appears to be the cheapest. that is if you'll manage to sleep in a reclining chair, they provide showers too for a small price or was it inclusive?

All of the electronics looked to be of nice quality on the other pics i saw. And rooms looked rather nice. Seems like it would be expensive to fill all these rooms with fancy equipment like that. I'd be worried about security issues more than anything

Hmm. But I think luggage / backpack would be a problem in capsule hotels?

Heard the lockers at those capsule hotels are rather small. A luggage definitely won't get in, maybe a small backpack.

For bout 3000 yen a night you can check Sakura Hostel out. I stayed at the Ikebukuro branch which just opened in Mar 08. Not too bad.

I don't mind trying that but when I travel, hotel is just a place for me to rest/sleep only.
I would go out to visit places and shop for unnecessary stuff ^^
Therefore I would rather spend less on accommodation.

Interesting. When i go to Japan by myself i will consider one of these. Noticed some Shounen Jump in there from 2006 (one of which was the Golden Week issue ...random fact there). These Tenga seem to be popping up all of za place aswell.
But yeah these will be useful for those who want go "USE" the stuff they got in Akihabara >

    *shutters*
that remind me of a very disturbing time i had at a internet cafe over there.

at-wan i think (not too sure might of been another internet cafe)

just wanted to use the internet for like only 5-10min to check emails but apparently internet cafe are quiet different over there compared to New Zealand.
For starter you have to buy time, this is normal, but the minimum amount is 30 min no less. at this point i was like wht?!? but then again i was desperate for my mail.
After deciding on how much time you are gonna spend there you have to choose whether or not you want to work in a privet booth or a public room.
I choose privet, thought it would be kool, man was i wrong.
First thing i notice when i step into this booth, thats basically a tiny cubical that has just enough room to fit a pc, tv, ps2 and you, was that the keyboard had some type of white fluid over it.
I was pretty sure of what it was than what is wasn't.
Luckily after showing the staff i was able to move to another booth but the damage had already been done.

when i got back to the hostel i was staying at i just had to clean myself, period.

Hmm, interesting indeed. Although you quite clearly insinuated how it could be used, it could also be very useful if your running late in Akihabara and you NEED to get home for the next episode of anime, then you can quickly rent one of these and watch it so that you don't miss it ^^

I've been viewing Hotel prices in Tokyo and they don't seam so expensive. Most of them have the same price for a room with twin double beds like in New York city which is around 130~150€ per night in summer time. I don't consider this expensive since Tokyo is one of the most if not the most expensive city in the world.

I wouldn't consider this option since I like to sleep in a normal bed in a hotel not in a chair.

It looks a bit like those Bagus internet cafes, where you can also have boxes with seats or a "bed", with a pc or tv with ps2 and other stuff. Goes for the same prices. They also have big collections of manga, anime & movies. So you can do what you want: read, watch, surf, play or sleep for a cheap price. Very handy.

But this one seems more of an adult nature :)

I don't care if they're used as jackoff booths, they look like damn nice places to stay in place of a far more expensive hotel.

And the eroanime DVDs would give me something to do at night :)

Nice, but I'd rather stay on one of those Hostels... the room could be completely sound proof, but I'd still have problems sleeping there just from knowing what might be happening on the next door. :P

Anyways, great article Danny! I'm voting for more stuff about living in Japan, cheap places to stay and to do. I'm also planning to move there sometime soon...

Nice location (Akiba), for about $26USD, TV, DVD player, internet, and reclining chair? Not to mention a showering facility? That's pretty good...but I took a look at some sample pics of the room and it's...a bit small.

I was watching a special on Fuji TV a few years back about these. Apparently, a lot of salarymen and students who can't afford regular rent are using these and the capsule hotels to live near where they work or go to school. Most of them said the biggest draws were the price, privacy, and shower.

It's become a concern, lately, because it's breeding a new type of homeless person in Japan.

Yeah, these cafes Tenga, Internet, etc. are additional options.

Even some of the lower class people are using these places to sleep and shower if they are close to becoming homeless!

Not a bad deal if the staff takes care of the facility well (if not they you'll know never to go there again!)

But here in Sasebo(Nagasaki Ken) the internet cafes are 1980 Yen per 10 hours.

No adult dvds/doujinshi here but lots of movies/anime/manga, you can sing karaoke, all you can drink, food prices are so cheap, so it's a place to relax and get away!
