Japanese Groundbreaking Technology

Yet more groundbreaking technology from the land of the rising sun.
Folks who live in Japan will know that there are always folks sleeping on the trains like this fellow and that many people miss their stops because of this.

But thanks to this device, one can sleep with piece of mind that they will never miss their stop - in theory.

As you can see from the video below - the person who wants to get some kip on the train simply wears the blindfold to block out the bright lights of the train carriage. A display on the blind fold scrolls along and says "I'm getting off at Mejiro (station)."
Nobody woke him up...

Japan is probably the only country in the world where you can go to sleep on a train and wake up with your belongings intact.

Ah, nearly forgot to mention - school girls sleep on the train too and have a habit of leaning on your shoulder.

Via Kirainet.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

I was taking an express from Tskuba to Akihabara and the really good looking school girl falls asleep next to me. First her head hits my shoulder...sweet...a few stops later she scratches her nose while asleep and places hand very close to my dolphin. When she woke up and realized she apologized profusely. I'm like "no problem".

Hmm... Well in Singapore you can sleep on the train and also wake up with all your belongings intact. Although this device is pretty cool. But it wouldn't work here. People here are too "polite" to bother you in your peaceful slumber.

      Awww...
Sleeping in different areas don't really help your public image. I almost always have the urge to fall asleep in class, but at least it's not a few minutes before, when I'm driving to class.

I also think the worst part of that is that as soon as class is done, I'm not sleepy anymore. It's only when I drive to that I get really really sleepy. I almost dozed off that one time...

It's quite natural that you aren't sleepy after class... after all you just slept :P

I bet several people already told you this, but you should sleep before class, which would be during the night. Try to go to sleep earlier in the night and your grades is likely to improve.

It wouldn't be nice to wake you up. It was clear that you needed to sleep. You shouldn't be upset with the help from a gentleman, even if he appears to be a dirty old man.

Maybe it pays to be dirty and old. I'm neither and I haven't seen any sleeping girls in public transportation.

Nice idea. However it's not like it's a great breakthrough from a technological point of view. It's just a stock FPGA or microcontroller that operates a LED display. A skilled person can develop this concept in say less than an hour. I like the concept though.

If I should have made it, I would rather have used a vibrator from a phone and turn it on when a GPS tells that you are near the goal. This removes the risk that nobody wakes you up (say if you are alone on the train). While you can build this out of development boards like in this video, it would be possible to add this feature to a mobile phone. All it needs is the vibrator and GPS. Now that this idea is on the internet it shouldn't take long before somebody codes some mobile phone software with this feature (if it's not there already. I didn't check).

There are always some people who takes small naps in the public transports (including myself) here in Portugal. ^_^; I don't think that you'd get robbed for that, unless you seem to be completely knocked out and there are really few people in the transport I guess.

    But I'd never let myself to fall into deep sleep. It's just too embarrassing to wake up on someone else's shoulder (I tend to fall my head to the front thought lol)! >_<;

It can be even worse. I was once told about a guy at school (not my class though) that used the bus to get to school. One day the bus driver woke him up at the end of the line and that was 90 minutes after he was supposed to get off and 80 minutes after classes started. He was somewhat lucky though because the bus driver managed to get him on a bus that was taken out of service (end of rush hour), and it dropped him off on the way back to the garage. It only took him around 40 minutes to get back to school.

Another nice story about sleeping in public transportation is another guy who fell asleep in the train. He woke up and saw that he was supposed to get off at the previous station. He didn't have time to leave the train so he was forced to go with it. It turned out that the train had been all the way to the end of the line and was now heading back.... so in a way he managed to wake up 4 minutes before he was supposed to get off like he usually does :D

Well I wouldn't say the only country in the world, when I was in New York on the ferry to the Statues of Liberty there were 5 Korean girls sleeping like babies on the boat, the waves (Hudson river) were so big because of an incoming storm and the boat wouldn't stop moving from side to side and still they were sleeping, lot's of people took pictures with them for fun and when one of them woke up I saw the most embarrassed person the world, I felt really sorry for the girls but it was funny as hell XD

I say the photo really makes it look like a homemade prototype. I'm not sure it's such a good idea after all. I mean if it is, then everybody will wear one and everybody will miss their station. I think GPS (as I mentioned earlier) would be the way to go for a "wake me up" sign. This display can be useful for a whole lot of other stuff though.

I just got a rather silly image of DCers flying to Japan and then spending all their time riding around the subway system. The time not spent in Akihabara anyway.

I sleep on public transport all the time - best way to make use of time, as someone who has lots of work, little sleep, and long commutes. It's funny, because I've developed a weird internal clock that wakes me up one stop before mine - and it works no matter where I'm going. ^^; It's a bit freaky, actually, since I manage to do it even when I'm heading to some place I've never been to before.

Some people travel for two hours to get to work and the same when they go home again. Since they also have long working hours and stuff that needs to be done at home, then the time for sleep suffers. Some of them need the time in the train in order to get enough sleep.

Heh, that just looks like someone got bored and had some extra LED displays lying around. Now, they just need to integrate a GPS or similar, that actually knows what station you are at, and wakes you up automatically.

I just got a new idea. If this is all about figuring out what the LED display can be used for, I would totally go for writing "empty space for rent". It could also be more daring and say stuff like "Dolphin cleaning headmaster". It could also be as simple as the clock or current speed (that would need GPS).

If it were a monospace text display instead I would totally get it to show Star Wars as ASCII art. If you don't know it, then follow this link: http://www.asciimation.co.nz/

Do you have any other ideas on what it would be interesting to display?
