The iPhone. Not Japan related (yet) but definitely otaku related - especially when you get a bigger screen to look at your ero images during that important lecture or when your CEO is running up n down shouting "I love this company!"...(MS)

Not forgetting to mention that the bigger screen makes viewing anime on the go much more enjoyable. I actually watched most of the Code Geass season on my iPod due to lack of time.

Well its only a few days to go until the iPhone is available in the US. Folks in Japan will probably have to wait a year or something silly. Most definitely on my buy list when it comes out over here.
My Guess is that the carrier in Japan will be AU. I say that because the iPhone has Google Maps features built in and AU has also partnered with Google in Japan.

BTW, the image used on the screen is from the "Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke wo" (その花びらにくちづけを) series by Peko-tan (VSFWN). Also click on the gallery for some really nice ero images including one from Gurenn Lagan. This frame has lots of cute pics too. Check to see if your boss is behind before looking. If s/he is not then call him/her over to share the info - S/he may be impressed with your find and you could be in for a raise.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

    The iPhone is slated for release on Friday June 29th at 6:00pm "Local Time". I've heard some things happening on Craig's List regarding individuals who have put themselves up for sale as line-up buoys. Not bad to earn $100 USD for standing around in line.

    Speaking of the iPhone, companies in Asian, (notably China) have begun to counterfeit them. If you go on youtube you can find the movie for the "tPhone" which is a blatant, albeit fairly nice knock-off of the iPhone. =)

    I would like to get an iphone but the price is 600 USD which I can't afford lol, plus its for cingular and I'm a t-mobile guy. The funny thing is people are auctioning themselves on ebay to stand in line and buy an iphone for you, same thing happened with the PS3 release. But I would love to have one, much better than my creative zen.

    I will not be purchasing the Iphone because I am basically ancient on cellphone technology. I need a cell phone, and that's all I will ever need. I never really thought or wanted to have upgraded cell phone technology unless I thought it would be handy. I do think the Iphone is an interesting concept though.

    No no, I'm waiting for future release of the iPhone because of the following:

    I don't like they ideal of not being able to change my own battery. Don't know about everyone else, but I can kill a battery each year.

    They iPhone is only GSM and EDGE. No HSDPA (3G)

    I'm not sure about data plan cost right now. Have this feeling AT&T is going to overcharge at the begining just because it's the iPhone. Currently I have an HTC Hermes/AT&T 8525. I pay almost $50 USD for my data plan. Yes, that not including my calling plan.

    From what I understand no third part applications can be added to the iPhone. The only way anything else can be added is buy building Web 2.0 style applets. Part of the reason Apple pushed Safari out in beta form and for Windows, I think.

    As with all Apple products, they will improve with future versions.

    I was thinking AU as well...

    I will get an iPhone if, and ONLY if...

    - It has a user replaceable SIM card so I can buy pre-paid cards for when I am out of the country. It was originally rumored to not have such, but now is rumored to have it.
    - It has 3G. Of course it will eventually, if it's going to be out in Japan. Apple held off on this because of cost concerns--not in manufacturing necessarily, but because a patent royalty decision had yet to be made by courts, and the wrong decision would have really hurt their initial release. They're OK on this front now, though. I personally want 3G not for the data transfer rates so much as the ability to use the same phone in the US and Asia.
    - It has to support Asian language input on my US model--or at least support English text completion on an Asian model, assuming I'd personally be able to activate an Asian model (if they require it like the new US models will). This is, again, primarily so I can use the same phone in multiple countries. I'm least optimistic about this possibility, though.

    I'll get an iPhone as soon as it supports those three features. If it doesn't, then I'll get one whenever I can pick one up for cheap.

    Haha I know why you want to get the iPhone, cause you want to run eroge on it right?

    Anyway, I'm also looking forward to the iPhone but its still so damn far away, with a year before its launched in Asia. Since Japan always has great handphones, I'm sure soon you will find a better phone coming out to rival the iPhone.

    @Mac, last I heard you couldn't change the SIM card. I wonder how they program the phone?? When I'm in Japan I use Softbank's network and Skype over Wi-Fi.

    @NickC, No, AT&T will release Windows Mobile 6 in August for the 8525. I've never been good at flashing devices like this, so I didn't want to create a $500 USD brick. ^^;

    I hope all this doesn't blow up in Steve's face. I don't see most people getting their plan and data services under $100 USD. We are talking $100 USD every month, no over you minutes or KB charges.

    Don't get me wrong I like the iPhone. I'm just wondering if people are giving all this a lot of thought. Many of my colleagues and friends easily have $100 USD plus mobile bill every month with overages. I wonder how many are willing to pay $200 USD plus bill every month.

    Hi danny, highly doubt it can run third party OSX apps cause the OS is pretty streamlined and locked out... unless some uber hacker unlockes it ^^ so u guys can use the multi touch function to its fullest potential LOLs

    Anyway apple needs to ramp up the specs cause it pales in comparison to some of the phones in japan/Asia.

    I think iPhone lacks quite afew features that are present on my samsung phone notably it does have the ability to expan the memory with SD cards and battery replacement and 3G.

    Once I get my iPhone I hope will be able to do this (check the link for my shuffle iPhone)

    Well, with some iPhone reviews out, it looks like the iPhone *does* use SIM cards (and presumably would accept USIM cards when they move to 3G). We'll have to wait for word on the unlocking policy, since AT&T is going to be much more protective of the lock with iPhones than other cell phones. Hopefully simply being an international traveler is still a good enough reason.

    And it's true: the iPhone just doesn't have a native API open to third party developers. Apple is exposing some of the iPhone's functionality through Javascript for AJAX-type applications, though, and claims these Safari-driven web-apps will be able to work as though they were native. We'll see!

    Another thing about the iPhone is the built-in battery that is quoted to not be user-removable. So like the iPod series, if you have battery problems you are going to have to send it back in to Apple or the retailer to get it fixed.

    Famous last words, still haven't gone to bed. ^^;

    @Mac, that's good news. When I first heard about no SIM, I was confused. You are right about lock code. Hopefully, the international plan will allow one to do so. I too don't worry about data plans, since I can almost text myself silly in Japan for nothing. Here in the state people are looking at the iPhone and thinking I can surf the web and watch videos. That's a lot of data moving around... Personally, I picked the HTC Hermes because it's used by Softbank and DoCoMo. I think Wilcom is using it not as well.

    @NickC, Yes... As soon as I heard that, I said no thank you. ^o^ Did you flash your Hermes/TyTn?

    Better stop multi-posting or Danny will have me hanging by piano wire. ^o^ This is such a big topic right now.

    Yup, I got the White Softbank X01HT and flashed it to WM 6 Black edition. There are really crappy data packages here in Canada so I'm using my school's/home's Wi-Fi when I want to check e-mail or surf the web.

    For those wondering about the OS on it, I can guarantee it'll be hacked to run a full-fledged OS X if it already doesn't contain one. Remember the Apple TV? Within a week, people were upgrading the HDs and installing the full OS on it. I'd also be willing to bet that, within a year or so, you'll even be able to run Linux on it.

    As far as the Peko-tan site goes, in Safari, I cannot access it due to a 403 error. Running through a proxy, however, I can. The weird part comes when I put other web browsers into the equation. I can access it via Camino without having to go through a proxy first. I can also access it without a proxy through Opera as well. Either way, it's a very, VERY nice page. ^^

    So here's the deal. I'm guessing it runs a real version of OS X, given that recent reports say that the "OS" takes up 700MB of the storage. Not that it matters, as Apple isn't opening up a REAL SDK yet. I probably won't buy one until someone's found a way to hack real apps onto it yet.

    At the moment, I'm running a Softbank X01HT (HTC Hermes) flashed with the WM6 "Black" rom. Working well, and let's me install real apps. Damn Apple though, for making something so pretty, and syncable with OS X.

    As for the carrier, I'm going to be it will be Softbank that will carry it though, as they're still the only carrier here in Japan who isn't using their own (semi) proprietary network, going with good old GSM variants.

    We'll see in a year though...

    Knowing apple I'd wait it out until they release a new version before I get one. Same thing happened the last time I bought an iPod. Three months later new gen iPods were out. tsk tsk tsk.

    Another thing is the iPhone right now is pretty much still a baby. I feel that they brought it out too early. Still has a lot of room for improvements. For one, they need to let us be able to change the battery. I definitely think it's crazy that you have to pay a fee for them to change the battery. Another would be to add in HSDPA. I use this a lot and is one of the reasons why I wanted to be able to change the battery myself. Using 3G or HSDPA can easily take out your battery life. And the biggest complain I have right now is that I wanted to be able to develop apps for my phone. I just can't live without my phone having those 3rd apps. *rant end* lolz. ^^

    I would love to watch anime on the go in that fine device, but since I live in England it would probably get mugged or something. Also I probably wont be able to afford it when it comes out... >

    Hmmm....isnt iPhone is GSM only? and IIRC Japan using UMTS/WCDMA right? @_@

    So if apple want to release iPhone in Japan or Korea, they need to release UMTS/WCDMA version and god knows how long that would take or if its ever going to happen -_-;

    Anyways Im not really a fan of iPhone, I'd rather take Nokia N95 instead lol

    ah yes its coming out this week over here. Its too expensive and plan for t is $60, not to mention the price of one iPhone. I don't think I will be getting it any time soon.
