Hong Kong

Took these pics during a trip to Hong Kong a while ago and have never had the chance to sift through all the photos I took. Decided to post just a few of the better-ish ones.
This was taken at The Peak.

This pork dish is my all time fave dish. Dont know the English name and only refer to it as Siew Yook Fan. This dish was excellent in Malaysia too - its the first thing I eat when I arrive in Penang (have relatives in Penang).
If I want to eat this I need to drive 50 mins to Yokohama for a taste that resembles this. Authentic Chinese food is really tough to find in Japan.

I'm very bad at remembering names of places that I've been too and cant remember where this is. Took one of these small boats and went around the harbor a few times.

Another I-have-no-idea-where-I-am. All I seem to remember nowadays are unix commands and figure release dates ^^;

While sorting through these pics, I felt like booking tickets for a weekend to go over and eat good food ^^;
The next place that I will travel to however will be Okinawa - either mid July or end of August after all the summer events are over.
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

LOL don't worry peeps from HK are great~ the crime rate there is so low that mostly the common thing you'll hear are either accidents or reckless overspeeding of cars , and one the best part of their law is - there's this certain law that even if you just tap or slap someone you can be sent to jail just for that , pay fine or worst get demanded to court justice (that's the reason why i have seen a lot of family affair fights out there but NEVER i have seen one of them touching each other not even a tap). Robbery and other whatever sort of related crimes doesn't seem to even exist there since i can say they are well disciplined to understand such case.

In contrast, there's a lot of drug trade / seedy business going down. I think I was offered hash from 5 different people walking down a street one time. Of course, as with other places, this is all dependent on where you are. Most of the touristy parts are safe.

One city that I would like to revisit. I was born there. ^_^;
None of the pics look familiar except for the tall buildings which was everywhere.
College Freshmen
Seconded. It was really lively there.
I believe that's where I went on my last day before going back to America. I kind of forgot. I do remember that there was this really crowded restaurant we went to eat at (in China or HK). Everyone was waiting to get a table, and my aunt (I believe it was) got us in right away because she knew people there. Not only did we get to eat in one of those private rooms, but we got to leave our stuff there, keep the area reserved, and shop a bit (1 hour) before actually eating. I remember thinking how awesome that was.

if tokyo has their akihabara, hong kong has their Mongkok area, HK's toy district ^^
got this article from a local filipino toy collecting group, Pinoy Toy Kolektor (http://ptk.14.forumer.com/)
Anyway, in Hong Kong island itself, there are 2-3 main areas to shop, all streets can be located from the free tourist maps you get from the airport, BUT if you have to ask a local in English, be prepared for some blank stares. The police are pretty obliging though, if you can spot one in the crowded streets.
VERY IMPORTANT: The shops don't open early. Shops on HK island open around 11~12pm. Shops in Mongkok open around 2~4pm. You can set out early to locate the shops first, but you'll have to wait till afternoon before you can open your wallet. Ask for the price politely, and DON'T BARGAIN unless you're serious about buying the toy. Rule of thumb: You see the price tag and can afford it, ask for a better price and don't haggle too much. You see no price tag? It's gonna cost you at least HK$1500 and up. It doesn't help if you're recognizably non-local... so stick to toys with price tags unless you're seriously gonna splurge.
WANCHAI AREA
1. Tai Yuen St, just opposite the road from the exit of Wanchai MTR station. At least 3~4 shops selling mostly current toys, including most Bandai, Yamato etc releases. Look overhead for the signboards, ignore the unappealing store fronts and go right INSIDE for the goodies.
2. Wanchai Rd, there are 2 to 3 dept stores with toy shops inside as you walk along towards the direction of Causeway Bay. Look out for In-Zone building on the right side of the street, store on 2nd floor, and later, "Dong Fong 188" building on the left. You may not recognize the characters for "Dong Fong" but you can't miss the "188". Beware of staggering amount of porn vendors amidst the toy shops!
3. Right after Dong Fong 188 as you approach the junction, turn left towards Hennesy Road and you'll find the building numbered 302-308. There's a fantastic shop inside with loads of vintage toys, but little current stuff.
CAUSEWAY BAY
1. After Wanchai, head towards Causeway Bay (CWB) on foot, 'coz you'll be halfway between either nearest MTR stations anyway. At CWB, don't miss out SOGO, Mitsukoshi and Seibu dept stores - they might have some old stuff not carried by the usual toy sellers.
2. Kanto Hobby, Causeway Bay branch. This great discount store is located behind SOGO on Lockhart Rd. I don't have the exact address, but all you have to do is lookout for a signboard with a Gundam head on it, The entrance is a dimly lit stairway, but the store has plenty to offer the bargain seeker. Their main store in Mongkok, Kowloon is another great place to shop. Credit cards accepted.
3. Toyzone HK, 16th Floor Causeway Bay Commercial Building, Sugar St (or "Tong Kai" in Cantonese). If you love vintage Japanese toys, you MUST NOT MISS this shop... They are stacked to the ceiling with old toys... I went there 3 times in 6 days and found great buys each time. Friendly people too. Highly recommended!
Now for KOWLOON... specifically, MONGKOK. If you're strapped for time, all you need to do is concentrate on Mongkok, specifically, the area bordered by Sai Yeung Choi Rd South, Dundas St, Soy St and Nathan Rd. This one square block of shops has enough toys inside to sate your every appetite.
1. On the side facing Nathan Rd, lookout for SINO CENTRE(Important note here!! As there are more than 9 MRT Exits from this station ---Take MRT "Exit E2"). On the ground floor is the store front for Kanto Hobby. Lots of bargains for current toys (like US$90 for a 1/48 Yamato). but the bigger surprise is when you take the lift to the 12th floor where they have a bigger room with more goodies on show. Unfortunately, the M&M reissues are not at very good prices... HK$1400 a pair. Almost everything else is a bargain. Don't wipeout your budget at one go!
2. After SINO, at the junction of Dundas St is TRENDY ZONE. The stores upstairs is a mish mash of fashions and collectibles, but the basement is where all the cool toys are. I got a VF-1S Super Valk reissue for only HK$300 there...
3. Turn the bend towards Sai Yeong Choi Rd South and you'll find CTMA CENTRE. Another treasure trove of toy shops, too many to single out. About 4 floors up and 2 floors below. This place is fantastic, but the shops open from 4pm onwards. Some don't open till 8 or 9!
4. Across CTMA, there's a manga/magazine shop. Above it is a toy shop called ANIMATE. Some bargains to be found, but not terribly fantastic.
5. Just round the bend from CTMA on Soy St, before the Subway entrance (not an MTR entrance), is a colorfully neon'd out building called CHIC something-or-other. Go in and look around, some cool things are to be found, but not much of a bargain place.
6. If you still have strength in your legs, haul yourself down along Dundas St past the stinkingly bad smells of the fermented toufu eateries on the left. After a while you'll notice an amazing amount of airsoft toy gun replicas on display. There are also lots of model kit shops in an alleyway along Dundas St. I bought a Kyosho r/c Gunwalker for HK$600... cool fun for that price!
7. After Dundas, you'll hit Kwong Wah St. Yet another street with r/c and model kit shops on both sides of the road, all the way till the end. Some vintage kits (not much), and a sprinkling of toys amidst the plethora of HG/MG/PG/Bandai/Tamiya etc.
That's it... there's actually a couple more places in Mongkok, along Argyle St, but you might have trouble finding them. Also remember, you need a STRONG BLADDER to shop around in Hong Kong. There aren't many public toilets, not even in hotels or shopping centers (except the really big, brightly lit ones, with no toys inside). Your best bet is a KFC, McDonalds or any other fastfood place if you need a toilet break.
While in Mong Kok, there's a couple more shops to look out for. Walk along ARGYLE ST towards SAI YEE ST. Keep to the left side of the main road.
1. First you'll encounter SING TAT Building, just after the junction for Tung Cho St. SING TAT's ground floor is full of mobile phone stalls and accessories dealers. Proceed to the 3rd floor for a couple of toy shops. WARNING: The 2nd and 3rd floors are also filled with porno dealers. Not good if you're with kids or squemish companions.
2. Continue down Argyle St and just before the junction of Sai Yee St, look up and see a HUGE signboard that says "111". You might miss it during the day because it isn't lit up and the signs are all so crazy. But "111" is a great place not to be missed!
Nothing on the 1st floor, but the 2nd floor has quite a few great shops with plenty of old and new toys. Don't forget to check out the BASEMENT of "111" either. It's a warren of toyshops down there!
-------
In Summary, if you're in a hurry or with other family members while traveling, just make a beeline for Sino Center and CTMA at Mongkok.... CTMA has "Superman Toys" toystore at the top floor. Contrary to the name, it does not sell any DC related items but rather it boasts an INCREDIBLE store display of Astroboy, Kamen Rider, ULtraman, SOul of Chogokin from the owner's own collection. It's a proverbial Toy Museum!! From Lifesize statues to busts, Japan action figures, boxed and loose.... the works!!! I guarantee you'll get stuck there staring at it for at least 30 minutes!Smile
I've heard stories of shops(entire buildings rather ) in Japan's Akihabara district(the techno-geeks dream heaven dito!) that have much much much more to offer in terms of display.... scary.
Other sources of information
- Hotel Yellow pages.. it has a 5- page directory listing of toyshops... have fun trying to call them up one by one and then try to get them to describe how to get to their shop...hehe... I didn't have the time to try this while I was there.
- Hongkong Local Toy Magazines. These are availble at NEwstands but sell out rapidly. They often contain advertisements by HK toyshops as to where one can find them. If the text in the ad is in Mandarin, have the Hotel reception Staff write a translation for you the address.
There are 2 types of mags, one is Hyper Model, containing only coverage of Model kits such as Gundams, Resin kits of Anime characters etc---- easy to find. The second Mag is the one to hunt down. Sells out really fast but has coverage of mostly everything involving Japanese toys. Gashas, Bots, busts, lifesize anime porn love dolls(no joke!)... each mag sells at 120 HK$ ... roughly 840 Php... but has lots of pics and custom jobs

Look out for In-Zone building on the right side of the street, store on 2nd floor, and later, "Dong Fong 188" building on the left. Don't wipeout your budget at one go!

if tokyo has their akihabara, hong kong has their Mongkok area, HK's toy district ^^
got this article from a local filipino toy collecting group, Pinoy Toy Kolektor (http://ptk.14.forumer.com/)

2. Kanto Hobby, Their main store in Mongkok, Kowloon is another great place to shop.
4. Kahilera ng street where TOYZONE HK (Causeway Bay Commercial Building, Sugar St) is Causeway Bay Shopping Center. Sa basement floor nun, you will find ANIMATE and some other shops. There are some toy and comic shops sa second and third floor.

8. ComixBox 2 is also located at the unit 5 basement of China Minmetals tower, 79 chatham road south, tsimshatsui, Kowloon - there's a lot of DC Direct stuff there.

side notes:
1. the sin tat building (3rd-4th floor) is the best place to get model kit spare parts and accessories.
2. the kwong wah area is the mecca for model kit shops. also its better to check each shop's prices first before purchasing a particular kit. the price differences is highly notable.
3. the shops definitely open around 4pm.
Assistant Director
Most of the model based shops that use to run in the "111" and Sin dat areas are pretty much gone now, so if you're looking to get parts, you'll be fairly disappointed. I thing at this point, there is 1 shop that still sells a small selection of Gundam parts. Most of these places have been replaced by game shops and assorted stuff that proabably isn't terribly ota-related... Same goes for 111, which on the top floor of the shoping area use to have a few modelling shops that ran classes, also selling parts for gundams as well as a selection of airbrushes/modelling supplies... Again, those are gone. For those looking to pick up Doujins imported from Japan though, 2nd floor of 111 has a good store that'd be willing to order in just about anything if you ask, but keep in mind stuff ordered may take a few weeks to arrive... There're also a few other toy shops as well as 1 that specializes in dolfies and what not... Kinda giving away that I'm a regular of the area, but what the heck eh? Anyone visiting the area should feel free to drop me a line. It'd be neat to meet some of the other members from DC.com~

Great pics, Danny. Made me miss and think about HK, since I haven't been back there for over 3 and a half years now.
Siew Yook Fan is yum! I love going to HK and eating!! Even their milk taste different to the stuff here in Oz (your recent Japanese milk post makes me wonder if it tastes the same as HK milk).
Yeah, that cute girl on the right of the teen pop group, Twins, is Charlene or Ah Sa as she's more commonly known.

Oh you like that dish as well? My parents are also fond of that dish, though we only have it occasionally. It's hard to find a good restaurant that serves it.
I'm assuming this is vietnamese, (my parents are mixed, and they have a habit of speaking both chinese and viet at the same time..-_-) but I always hear it referred to as something that sounds like "Tet Way", no idea how to spell it, but when you get a good batch over here, it really is good.

After i've been to Japan this year, Hong Kong is the next destination on my list. It looks like an amazing city and according to a relative of mine, the people are really friendly and at night its full of life. Sounds good so i have to go sometime. And, a Gundam shop? The prices may be better than the Gundam prices in Japan. A lot of HK based websites that sell Gundam do sell them slightly cheaper than sites based in Japan it seems.

Nice pic from the Peak, what did you use at what setting? I am hoping to invest in a wide-angle lens later this year. My friend took a picture from the same spot during the day, it's quite a sight. The evening scene is more dramatic and spectacular though.
I hope to go back for a visit soon.

In Malaysia, there's this place back in my hometown called Ipoh, Gourmet Square (Aneka Selera) served this delicious Char Siew... oh god now i want to go back for some T_T
I have been to HK once with my family and aunties. We had 2 small rooms and it was super hilarious. It was so small until when I was baking chocolate cake (if you know what I mean ^_~) both rooms smell!! LOL!
It is a nice place to visit, don't mind going there for some cheap gadgets and some dim sums :)

Great info there, Henry. Will be looking out for those stores when I go there in December.
But I understand building / store in Hong Kong change so frequently that it hard to find a place not having any construction or renovation work being carried out.

Was over in Hong Kong in 1996 , 1 year before the chinese return date. I saw a lot of families trying to sell their apartments and move to the UK, Canada, & the States. There were small display rooms around Hong Kong where prospective HK buyers would look at models and blueprints of complexes in Vancouver. The salesman pointed out how similar Vancouver looked at night, being on the water etc. He also bribed interested buyers with tales of the best Chinese food outside of HK.
Danny, you are returning to Okinawa ?

Its funny how your drink has its own bowl of ice to chill it :D
My favourite things to eat in Hong Kong is pork rice cooked in clay pots over coals on the street, and egg waffles! We bought bags from 4 separate stands, trying to differentiate the quality..

Sweet i was born in Hong Kong.
but..though the place is great and all, the worst part would be the constant heat.
i would go out of an air conditioned shop an onto the streets, as the warm and cold air meet; my glasses completely fog up.
The night view of the city on a boat is the best.
And i remember during new years, part of the population would just migrate to the docks to see the new year fireworks.

I buy my stuff from the playasia store there ( import ), never had a problem. Jackie Chan had a tour of HK not too long ago somewhere on my directv channels it was really good. I would probably freak out if I went because of so many people and buildings in such a small space. Its really amazing from what I have seen from what others have posted and videos.

I went to HK several years ago with my mom and my brother. It was a pretty fun experience since it was my first time there. :D It's interesting to see how much life differs over there compared to here in the US. I'd love to go back some day and maybe go to mainland China too since I haven't been there before ^^" My mom's actually going again with my dad in a few months...

I love Hong Kong. Parents were born there and alot of my family live in Hong Kong. So I visit every so often. Got the newest Hong Kong ID with thumb print and photo on so when I enter Hong Kong airport I insert the card and it scans my thumb and I can get pass immigration. No waiting in queues or filling forms waiting for them to check your passport and papers which is good.

Hey Danny wow i havent commented on here for a long time lol xD but anyways one of the streets you were on that you didnt know the name of was Mong Kok's Sneaker street or "shoes street" where its a street full of stores that sells shoes and a big nike store lol xD. Also another good place to buy gundams are in Kowloon a place called Whampoa Garden theres a store there called Wonderland and they usually over stock on figures and gundams so alot of times they sell for a cheaper price ^_^ btw i am going to HK again this summer im so excited hahaha xD

Mong Kok is the place to go if you want your anime figures. Shin wor has unending floors of them but you have to keep your eyes peeled for bootlegs. If it's EXTRA cheap, you know where this is going.. But HK is an awesome city. Once you've lived there for a while, you'll always say you're "going back" to HK no matter where you're from lol. "Some place with tall buildings." <---That could be anywhere in HK ^^;
There's a lot of old buildings around, but they're all giving way to new developments. It's hard to preserve land in Hong Kong because there's no room to grow but UP! Buildings just go taller and taller every year. I don't think there's anywhere in the world with Apartment (not commercial) buildings 40+ stories everywhere.

Ah, Hong Kong... Been going there since I was a kid. Great food, nice sights, and an awesome selection of toys (if you know where to look). Last time I went there was last Christmas (bought me a PG Zeta for only $100++). Been slowly expanding my search radius everytime I go there, and I'm always disappointed I didn't save enough cash, hahaha! Dunno if I'll ever visit it again considering the current economic crisis...
Mmmmm... Crispy roast pork on rice, served with Char Siu sauce... Personal favorite from HK would be the Shrimp cooked in Egg Whites from a little tea house called "Happy Garden". Was sad and disappointed that they lost their lease when we went there... Anybody knew this tea house? Was across the Marco Polo hotels.

What a transformation. Next Wednsday, 12 years since the birth of their second Special.Administrative.Region. since Macau
!st of July 1997, was Britain's saddest moment on wich they handed over the territory to Chinese rule. The Brit's first encounter of Hong Kong was in the ealry 18th century commerce for the same spices of always, on which the 19th century went belic because of that, and in 1842, WENT THEIRS!!!
By 1982, after signing the '82 treaty between Great Britain and the People's Republic of China, PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In 15 years time, they'll lose their protector on which they adapted since then. And as a result, a third of the HK population had fled away to the Uk to secure and settle themselves there. And as for the closing weeks of June 1997, it's all over for Britain, the birth of the HKSAR was persistent and imminent at the same time, and it still does in the present, since 1997 was the year that i have been influenced by the media(TV, Radio, prints, videogames, internet, etc.)
