Japan adds new technology to its arsenal of crime fighting unmanned machines - the previous one we saw was the unmanned police station.

This vending machine is laced to the brim with the latest in crime fighting technology - a red light, a surveillance camera and a sleek telephone.
The video clip below shows an example of how it should be used. A woman gets her bag snatched and she chances upon the crime fighting vending machine and makes a call...

However, some folks were not pleased about the camera and vandalized the machine. They sprayed the words "surveillance society" on the machine.
Do surveillance cameras bother you? I hear that the UK has the most in the world ^^;
News via Japan Probe.

Was just thinking - maybe they need a real crime fighting vending machine instead?

    I think this surveillance cameras don't let the people act with freedom. Criminals must be punished, but not everybody.

      I was thinking something like that. I mean, not something I would do myself, but something someone else could possibly do. There isn't really anything to stop someone from intercepting the camera and turning it into something else. (pantsu-cam...) ^^;

      And the idea of security cameras in a vending machines just makes me not want to go to one. I just want a drink. I don't want to be recorded...@_@

    I wouldn't approach that vending machine... don't like knowing the fact that a camera is watching your every move. I don't mind surveillance cameras, but this one seems much different. It's too invasive, and doesn't seem to add much security.

    About the camera... is it supposed to be facing towards the front to observe people who use the machine or scanning its surroundings?
    Since the woman did run to the machine to make a phone call, I'm assuming the vending machine camera is scanning the area. Or else it's kinda useless, becauses as soon as you go to make a call, the criminal would have already fled.

      Yea and as long as idiots keep buying into this "terrorism" scare, the governments of USA and England will continue to rob of us our constitutional liberties until it is too late to reverse the damage. The real terrorism at work here is the governments. Terrorism= techniques employed by governments to further political agendas and obtain social control through use of generating fear in the public.

      If you really think deeply about it, terrorism can be used as an excuse to do almost anything anywhere in the world. Since terrorists aren't bound to any specific geographical region. The Americans and Britains are going to usher in a new age of imperialism. And anyone who opposses are ideals will be invaded, destroyed, and restructured to suit our whims. Welcome to the 21st century!

        Damn true. It's like that elderly man who went to one of the voting speeches. As free speech is allowed and all, he stood up at a certain comment and shouted something like 'Rubbish' or 'Bullshit'. Which, is fine. It's within rules, we're all allowed an opinion. And he got arrested for like 2 months under the terrorism act. That, is what I call ridiculous.

          While that may be true in the spirit of things, the fact that surveillance technology has saved lives cannot be ignored. Over the past years numerous terorist attemps, mostly in European nations, have been thwarted. That much is true.

          I don't support a full blown eye in the sky where every individual has their own satellite or anything remotely close to that since it's an invasion of privacy, yet I won't criticize when they're ONLY used in times to prevent loss of life.

          When all is said and done, the government should at least know when to take a step back. Paranoia will cause problems in the future.

            I agree. It's not that I don't think surveillence is a good idea. It just needs limits, the terrorism act is the biggest exploitation in existance. Look at iceland, the whole country was deemed a terrorist nation. I mean... comeon.

    I don't mind cameras. It's not like anybody will bother to look through the recordings to see if you forgot to zip your pants or anything like that.
    The consequences for not having cameras far outranks the problems we get for having them. I read some statistics on crimes in the UK. The number of crimes solved by viewing camera recordings that wouldn't have been solvable without recordings was really high. Also those statistics didn't say anything about how many people who didn't commit a crime because they knew they would be recorded.
    The result for not having cameras here is that the crime level on the streets is so high that people (including me) avoid walking on the streets after nightfall. It's an open question how many are behind it since without recordings it's really hard to get evidence that will do in court. Lack of cameras is for the benefit of criminals only.

    I dislike surveillance cameras, but I am comforted by the fact that it is impossible for the authorities to keep track of all the tapes.

    For example, I am on camera about 6 times a day going to the lavatory at the office, another 24 times or so going in and out of the building, and about 70 times going into or out of the tube stations. (This is central London.)

      Speed, as well as red light cameras, are different in that they only capture images of individuals committing the moving violation when it occurs so it's not always on recording everything that happens. Those cameras I fully support since they make the roads much safer.

      There's a stretch of road close by that is in front of an elementary school. Before a speed camera was installed there was at least one to two crashes every month due to speeding. Now it's virtually zero.

    My opinnion is like this: The alarm system and camera are welcome, as long as the camera is pointed straight down (to limit it's vision only for what it was made for: To prevent vandalism), and it should be built into the vending machine... not something stupidly attached on top of it.

    I used to resent being recorded all the time, but I have grown accustomed to it; now I don't mind. It started getting to me when I lived in London for the reasons that other folks already stated above. When I returned back to my home in Chicago nearly 2 years later, I found that there were MANY many new surveillance systems set up here, as well. I have watched a lot of crime documentaries and there are loads of criminals who were captured and prosecuted because of video surveillance-- criminals who would have escaped if they had not been recorded. Since I don't go around breaking the law, the cameras don't really bother me.

    While the sleek new crime fighting tech is certainly intimidating...the camera, light, and phone put together cannot beat the all-mighty ski-mask.

    Japan has one of the lowest crime rates across the world so they don't have to invest much into actual enforcement. Then again JASDF is eyeing the US's F22 despite it not being on sale currently. That might chase away potential bag snatchers if they happen to acquire some for their aging wings.

    ???Confused???

    Surveillance in and outside of stores are one thing, but vending machines seems like over kill...although there are times when they become crucial evidence of things like hit and runs here...

    I actually like this. There were actual moments and areas that would benefit from something like this. And regardless of being overkill and whatnot, but it is better to have too much protection than to have none at all.

    And also... Check out episode 5 of the Coca-Cola robot bit. Zero makes an appearance. :3

    My country would really need this... the vending machine I mean, not the surveillance equipment on it. I rather buy an overpriced drink from those than to buy a cheap one from people who walk out in the streets all day selling it to cars. Who knows where they got those drinks O_o

    But my country also needs surveillance equipment. With the kind of crime rate my country has, it needs all the help it can get x_x

    hahaha... here in Indonesia the police doesn't need to deal with badguys but the people in every house will gather and beat the guy down to he's knees well it's easier to be a police here because the people easily helps (not literally)

    Being quite honest I think it's a good idea, many people get mugged and no one sees it in this world. At least with these camera's victims get at least a better fighting chance.

    People being watched while in a hospital they're okay with it but for some reason on the street they don't like it which pretty much amazes me. Unless you're doing something you know you shouldn't then theres nothing to worry about because the video footage would be checked and deleted if there's nothing wrong.

    Interesting... though I'd probably be annoyed because the camera surveillance may pick up on other things beyond crime and stuff.. eh. o__O;;;
