Most Mac users will know by now because they start to twitch just before Apple releases new products ^^;

I love Apples strategy in making their product line slimline and the new casing looks a lot cheaper to produce with their brick manufacturing.

Now that the Mack Book Air problems seem to have been solved, I'll probably get one but it looks like Japan has to wait until late November.

Didn't like the new MBP designs when I first saw them but after looking at the details at apple.com, I appreciate how they are making the design simple. I also personally prefer the glossy screen - I chose that for my MBP too.

Anybody getting anything from this batch?
Watch the keynote at Apple.

Original text from Pyoro below.

well apple went ahead and announced a new line of their macbook series. that mean ALL including the relatively new macbook air. i am digging those graphics cards for the pro.
oh and the black finish? awesome
Me wonders whether danny-san will be getting this one.
In stores tomorrow.

All the new lappies look great. I am not in the market for one though. What caught my attention is the new 24-inch LED Cinema Display! I need something like that badly. I do not think its on sale since the website has it marked as "Coming soon". I guess it would be best to wait for third party reviews and go to an Apple store to see it.

Not sure about you, but the last time i checked, the prices on Apple displays is insane. I think it was about 350 dollars for a...(runs off to site)..

WOAH. I was way off. For your 23" cinema display, its literally 900 dollars.

I dont know about you, but i certainly am not THAT concerned about looks. Sure, glossy is sexy, but you can get an LCD tv that runs monitor for almost half that (and thats exactly what im using)!

Ya, I might get a the new MacBook. Spec's look good and it should complement my Hackintosh desktop I built a few months ago. Of course my hackintosh kicks apples ass! btw, I would wait a bot and see if they explode, melt, crack or fizz before I plant down any money on that.

Looks nice, but as usual too expensive. The specs of the default MBP (€ 2.499,00) are like specs from a 800€ standard laptop which is able to run Leopard too...
I know that I'm asking this too often and I don't wan't to offend somebody BUT where did all those money go, is this case soo expensive?

I don't know how exactly Apple calculates it's prices but I guess it has something to do with the smaller market share when compared to companies like HP, Acer or Dell. Thus they have to have a higher profit margin because the manufacturing of their computers won't magically cost less when their customer base is small.

Furthermore their workmanship is rather solid. While I wouldn't compare a Macbook with an IBM Thinkpad it's certainly more robust than most cheap notebooks.

That said, I think Macs are quite a bit more expensive in Europe than they are in the US.

Yeah, of course, but what counts for us as costumers is what we get for our money right?

If you would have to choose between a laptop with a Core 2 Quad Q9550, 4GB, Blu-ray, GeForce 9800M GTX 1024MB, 17" WUXGA glare TFT (2400€) or a MBP... what would you buy?

Personally I think the hardware specs aren't everything..especially when buying a laptop. While the performance is important solid workmanship and the quality of the manufacturer's support are at least as important.

Let's say you use your laptop for surfing the net, playing music but also for work or studies. One day your motherboard dies and has to be replaced. If you were using a desktop computer you could easily replace the faulty parts yourself but trying this on a laptop is a little trickier. Thus you need to call the manufacturer's support branch to get you computer repaired.

This has to happen in a timely manner, because your professor, boss or co-workers won't appreciate waiting for you to get the work done.

Support staff costs a lot of money so some companies try to cut costs by reducing it. That way they can sell their products at a lower price and their customers will be happy unless they really need it.

A local computer magazine that I read from time to time (c't) had a readers survey about the support of various laptop manufacturers a while back. The results were that on average some companies fixed the problems in a matter of days while others finished the repairs after various weeks or not at all.

The quality is of course good, especially with their new unibody aluminium enclosure, but is the Apple support really that superior that they have to sell their laptops 2-3 times more expensive?
They have already 18% marketshare in the US. http://i38.tinypic.com/2i96xrr.jpg

If anything in your machine dies and you have just one PC you are doomed anyways^^ Which company had the best support in that survey?

What I found interesting was that in Europe, they sell Apple Products at the exact same numerical value but with different currencies. Like when they sell the iPods, they sell it at 149 Euro while they sell for 149 USD in the US. I wonder why it costs so much more when sold in Europe.

Thats what I noticed over the last few years too. Was the same for the MacBooks, same price tag, different currency. Obviously Apple makes big money with us europeans... but I also noticed that the new lineup has slightly different price tags this time around ... not that its still 350 Euros more expensive than the US$ price ...

No, it doesn't the new Macbooks do not have Firewire support. Check the site. Macbook Pros have a Firewire 800 port though.

This is quite a glaring oversight, in my opinion. The display port is also an issue - they use something called a MiniDisplay port now, and it's basically useless without adapters (not included) unless you're using an Apple Cinema display.

I was thinking the same thing... dose that differ from the last macbook's mini DVI port/connection? (I don't know because my laptop is an old PowerBook G3/400 which I'm looking to replace). I was also thinking about that new 24" display, if I can use it with my desktop. They don't say if they provide an adapter. At $900 it dose not have much options for connecting any other equipment.

It's different from the miniDVI port. You can take a look at it in the gallery photos on Apple's site. It's halfway between the size of a USB port and the audio line-out.

I'm not sure about adapters for the cinema display. They've always seemed unjustifiably overpriced for me.

I was just reading about this in detail on the site. As I've mentioned, the new Macbooks have no Firewire support, which is simply ridiculous. The Pros lose a firewire port (from 2 to 1) and you now need an adapter (sold seperately) for both DVI or VGA displays. I'm quite disappointed.

Also, as an MBP owner, I was expected a bigger upgrade to the specs - at least a 3.0Ghz on the highest end. Instead we get a 2.4 to 2.8 Ghz range. The new low-end MBP is now as fast as the high-end Macbook, and the Macbooks themselves are more expensive than before.

Of course, as usual they look good. Still like the old silver keyboard design for the MBPs, but the black keyboard looks nice with the new black monitor rim.

I thought current Macbooks were already limited with only one button below the touchpad, but it looks like they dropped the mouse button altogether. That entire touchpad better be a tactile button, because tapping on the mousepad to simulate a mouse click just doesn't work. Also, glossy screens are glare-inducing instant scratch and smudge attractors. A matte option would have been much better. I already dislike Macs and Apple products in general, and this new lineup turns me off to them even more, although the lower prices probably will make them more competitive. As for that "new" 9600 GT, my 9800 GTS equipped Gateway chuckles at that.

Apple OS by itself is great, machine are overpriced... MBP should be priced like MB imo, and MBA is just a waste of time, it only has One USB, and the footprint is rather large, incompatible with other apple peripherals without special cables lol....

*sigh* I was really hoping for the $899 macbook rumor to be true. The original macbook went down to $999 but they also released two new macbooks going above the $1k price point. I've always wanted to buy a macbook but I still think its too pricey for me.

It's clear that Apple have a progressive design policy. I love the new designs and in my opinion, the most important part of a laptop is none other than the keyboard (followed by the screen). Although it's not as good as the one found on Thinkpads, it comes quite close.

I currently use the previous iteration of the MB for my work. Until it breaks down, it's not worth any upgrade /me thinks.

Although the laptops are slightly overpriced, $899 is a fair price for a LED monitor. Have to watch out with glossy screens though. Glossy screens + upright position = annoying reflections = eyeHurts.

Hopefully will the MB Air drop in price a bit whenever I need to replace my MB.
