Usually when I get around 30,000 users per day with more than 100,000 page views, its usually because I've been Dugg or Boinged. My end of year goal was initially set to 20,000 which I revised to a stretch goal of 30,000 last month.
Looks like I will need to revise the goal again as I hit 30,000 this week without the aid of a Boing or a Digg. While I am happy, this has come a bit too soon than I anticipated thus the server outages you are experiencing.

A quick thanks to the regular readers for making this possible and a big herro to the new readers - I hope the outages don't put you off ^^;

I have done a ton of caching and image optimization on the server but looks like I need better hardware and have just ordered another server to handle capacity. Will need to do more optimization which will delay development of figure.fm orz.
If the site fails to load, it should be back up within a few hours until the new server is up n running.

Above: Todays outages ToT;

The remainder of this post will only interest blog owners or developers- the rest may fall asleep ^^;
Some of you asked about my dev environment so I thought I would talk about about it here.
dannychoo.com has been up since 2000 and was initially a place for me to experiment with web technologies and let my friends know that I was alive by posting something every six months. Archive.org has been keeping archives of the site and http://www.dannychoo.com" target="_blank">you can see what this site looked like years ago. You can also use that tool to get archives of your site too - useful when you have a hard disk crash ^^;

Wanted to have a guestbook feature back then but couldn't program. I downloaded other peoples Perl scripts and spent hours modifying them so that they partially did what I wanted. I got fed up of that and decided to learn Perl where everything was CGI back then.

After learning Perl for a while, I came across PHP and liked the look of it as one could embed code within the HTML code. PHP is pretty easy to pick up and is still my preferred language even though people go on about Ruby.

dannychoo.com back then was still in Korean, Chinese(traditional), Japanese and English. I didnt want to create a page for each language so decided to start using a database to store data. MYSQL was my choice of DB where the basics can be picked up in an evening. I dropped Korean and Chinese from the site due to time constraints.

Previously, I developed on Windows using tools like Dreamweaver and Editplus for editing. Was running Apache as the webserver with PHP and MYSQL. I used Windows IIS for a while which was a good start but not recommended for anything else other than learning.

At the moment I have the same dev environment on OS X.

I previously used the Table tag for positioning back in the Web1.0 world but now use CSS for positioning just about everything - this is the reason why I dont use Dreamweaver anymore. The text editor I use is Smultron which is the best text editor for the Mac - *All others* for some reason have crap support for double byte languages.

For those who are interested in learning, a site I most recommend is W3 Schools - a lot of PHP, MYSQL, CSS, JavaScript to be picked up there with examples.

Dreamweaver is also a great tool to learn HTML and build sites - used it for years and thank the makers.

Nearly forgot to talk about graphics. I use Fireworks for everything web related from doing mockups to banner graphics. I only use Photoshop when working with Photos and Mirai-chans PSD files.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

    I'm also using dreamweaver mx to edit my hobby homepage and use firworks mx for graphics and modifying pictures. I'm still a n00b with photoshop software.

    Danny, Which db software would you recommend us to use? even for beginners. I've already forgotten how to use oracle sql since I'm not majoring in databases but multimedia and the internet.

    Congratulations ;p

    I always use PHP too, and I use Zend Studio (in combination with Zend Platform). It allows me to debug PHP like any other programming language using breakpoints, watches, etc. (Platform is not necessary for debugging though, but it helps with catching errors/slow queries/caching on the server side)
    But... my current Zend Studio 5.5 has bad support for multi-byte text..., hopefully that will get better in the future.

    Ran into similar performance issues with some of clients PHP applications. However using APC and memcached solved most of them. Add some properly configured mod_expires to your apache and switch of php's ultra-stupid autosending of headers.

    You might also think about setting up a server for static contents, thttpd or lighttpd will give amazing results about throughput and take away the work from your apache.

    Another thing that really provides great hints for optimizing is xdebug together with wincachegrind (or kcachegrind), it will show you exactly the bottlenecks in your app.

    By the way, smultron rocks very much on OSX, however for "real" development you better go with Eclipse :)

    PHP and MySQL was quite hard the first time I tried using it. (Like grabbing data from the DB and stuff). W3Schools is definately my number 1 choice to look at codes and stuff.

    hhmm.. I'm still confused with all me coding that I've tried and its very messy haha!

    Very interesting post Danny and congratulations on exceeding your target!

    Of course I don't host my own site yet. Don't have one to host. ^^; From years of experience in computers and from what I have learned so far, I'm not completely in the dark. Thank you, you answered a few questions for me with this post.

    I'm using Smultron as well. It's surprise that many software developers view double byte language support as a low or non-priority subject. Of course it would be easy to use a Windows base program, but I want very much to move away from switch back and forth when working. It's one of the reasons I have been using Parallels. However, VMware may be the better application.

    I just discovered W3 Schools yesterday. Will go back soon to do more exploring.

    Congratz Danny, you've now reached a new level of popularity. Give yourself a pat on the back. XP

    But seriously, congratz. I've been coming here for 2 years now and I still like how it goes. I plan on moving to Japan someday and you're my beginner's portal on how it's like there.

    Plus this site helped me figure what career I wanted and it's going smoothly towards it. Thanks Danny, thanks dannychoo.com.

    WOW! 30000 unique visitors per day!
    And I'm happy when I got more than 15 per day ... ^_^;

    Thx for the insight on your dev enviroment, is good to know that is not just me that cannot use Dreamweaver for CSS editing.

    I didn't know of the W3Schools site, is great! Bookmarked.

    Wow. 30k! Now that's a lot. Congrats!

    I've worked with php before but I've never really been a fan. I don't like mixing php code with the html tags and all. Looks too messy. :D Thanks for the tips, I'll give fireworks a try. I've never really been good with graphics design. heheh

    btw, do you use relative or absolute positioning in your css?

    Interesting post, I had wondered about where/how you host your site as you had mentioned that you get a 100Mbit fiber optic link to your house. So, you don't do any of that load-balancing stuff huh? Have you considered paying for hosting?

    Learning web dev is not easy, I think it's quite amazing what you've achieved. I'm just starting to use wordpress and start blogging... I always find learning by dissecting existing codes easier and more goal-oriented than reading books.

    This Friday is my last day at my current place of employment of 5+ years. I'm taking the chance to do the web / blog stuff and aiming to go to grad school in Japan next year. This is what I'm blogging about, my journey to Japan. If you got any info, please shoot me an email! :) Cheers.
